They did a LOT of name dropping this week. Well not a lot but I caught some nifty little nuggets that really help to broaden the 'universe' so to speak. I love the potential for this show.

Yep. Kid Supes gets drunk from spiked punch and splits in two, then destroys his "evil half" in a car crusher.

arrow finale was good. they may have tried to wrap up too much too quickly in the space of one episode, though. just felt very intense the whole time. i really enjoyed it, but a couple of times i was like 'jesus, are they gonna slow down at any point?'
oh, well, i guess they did - lot of "there's no time for this but let's make out while we're racing to stop a disaster" moments, which irked me a bit. but generally, i must say, it's done a great job of picking up from being okay at the outset to actually being a show that i'm excited to see each week.
also,
did not expect them to kill tommy. genuinely thought he would survive and do the harry osborn thing of replacing his father as arch-enemy but then they started reconciling and everything and then boom, impaled. i DID think they were going to off detective lance, though, which would have made room for the mum to come back, i guess.
also, can't tell which of thea or roy is supposed to be speedy/arsenal/THE SIDEKICK. like obviously roy is gearing up to be a sidekick guy but (and really it's the only thing in her favour) ollie did call thea "speedy" early on. unless roy just becomes arsenal straight up.
really glad they did not kill diggle.

Apparently DC's doing a tie-in comic if you do the pre-order thing with the Man of Steel DVD/Blu-Ray pack. Normally this wouldn't be too significant, except for two major things:
1) It's written by David Goyer, and it's considered canon in the new continuity.
And
2) One of the major characters we see in it?
Motherfucking Kara Zor-El.

I rather have the fast pace cramming than a teased resolution that never gets resolved because someone up the food chain decides to axe the show (or anything extraneous like the writers strike happens and derails everything like in shows like Heroes and Life). Plus, it was a nice thrill ride that made up for the couple lull/filler episodes.
Yeah, they did have a few aggrivating "drama" moments throughout the series, such as Thea arguing with Roy about "not having time" after the "redundancy" kicked in, but in the time it took her to argue the point, dramatically kiss, and leave, they BOTH could have saved that bus full of people and all went on their merry. I get they have to have their requisite ammount of CW-ing, but still...
didn't expect that ether. There was all that angst they were building between he and Ollie, and after conveniently happening by while Laurel and Ollie were screwing in the window, I kind of expected him to somehow get on board with his dad's plan and become Ollie's foil, then he sees exactly the bastard his dad is, rescues Laurel, and OH HEY IMPALED! Fuel for Ollie to be more tortured and Batman-esque... wait a second, did Ollie stab himself through the *heart* to kill Malcom Merlyn?
Does anyone here Batwoman? I have to say I'm hooked.

Just finished re-watching the Christopher Reeve Superman series (not all at once, over the course of several days).
Somehow, I had never seen The Richard Donner Cut of Superman II. Thought for sure I had seen it, but turns out I didn't. I loved the Marlon Brando scenes. I liked that they actually explain how Supes got his powers back too, it always bugged me. "lol" at him using the turn back time gimmick at the end of the movie again, though. Got to wonder why he even bothered fighting Zod, or blowing up his fortress, when he was just going to go back in time and make everything not happen.
Also, they used alternate takes of some of Terrence Stamp's lines that were not as good as in the theatrical version. Particularly this line:
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/QYNiwU8hk5M" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Theatrical
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/j4cBRJXSNso" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Donner Cut
All in all, I liked a lot of stuff from the Donner Cut, but missed some of the stuff from the Theatrical. They should make an "ultimate cut" combining both in the exact way that would make me happy.
Lock Jaw
05-19-2013, 06:38 PM
Also, I apparently had never seen Superman IV. Or it has been so long that I had zero memory of it. Definitely not as bad as I thought it would be. Better than Superman III.
Sure, there are some gaping plotholes ("lol" at Lacy surviving being taken into space without a space suit), and bad special FX.... but on the whole... it had potential.
Just read that it was cut down from 137 minutes to 90 minutes. Though there is probably zero demand for it, they should release a director's cut.

I don't like the turning back time ending for Superman II. Works way better for Superman I.

Reading up on it, that is apparently exactly what Donner thought, so he decided to use the ending for Superman I, and was going to make a new ending for Superman II. He did not get around to it, though.

 I thought he had at first too, but it reminded me of the 4th Die Hard movie where McClane shoots himself through the shoulder/chest (very close to the heart) to kill the dude standing behind him.
Kind of sad to see Tommy die, didn't expect that to happen. I figured the detective would die and Tommy saving Laurel would drive her back to Tommy thus reestablishing them and leaving Ollie alone again.
I really loved the whole episode a lot though. I love the show and just the little touches they use occasionally like trying to crash the Ferris Aircraft plane really make it all the better.

I find it kind of humorous/sad that the worst thing about Marvel & DC these days is the comics. The games, movies and cartoons and even fan fiction like JL8 there are all generally all pretty good or in many cases great. Whereas the supposed cornerstone of the company is pretty mediocre at best.
The new 52 seems to be panned for the most part, and while it has been a year or two since the last time I tried to read a Marvel book their stuff wasn't a whole lot better. The issue of Iron Man I read seemed more like a freshman level engineering text book than a comic, Captain America was just boring, and the Hulk (with Banner and Hulk getting separated) was probably the best of the three because the concept was at least interesting even if the execution was "meh". Of course they ended up putting them back together so the interest there was fleeting.
I mean the movies and merchandising and such makes loads more money I'm sure, but it seems like you want more stories and such available for future reference to make future movies and animation off of.

Just finished reading Batman: The Black Mirror, and was about to say "Well maybe this new DC stuff isn't all bad" before I realized the vast majority of it was published before New 52.
So carry on fucking off new dc universe. But on a brighter note, I reccomend The Black Mirror to any of you who haven't read it. Great old school detective heavy dark knight story, by a writer who really gets Dick Grayson as Batman.
Lock Jaw
05-25-2013, 02:51 AM

Fignuts
05-25-2013, 03:02 AM
Unless I'm mistaken, Batman's continuity was left alone though, unlike most everyone else.
Even then, I feel they took Dick out of the cowl way too early, and subsequently killing off Damian was retarded as well.
It's like no one in comics has any balls anymore. Instead of taking something new and original, that has a lot of potential and sticking with it, such as Bucky as Cap, Rogers in a Nick Fury Role, and The Grayson/Damian team, they back off and go back to what is "safe" and "traditional".
Even though my favorite stories come from other writers, my favorite writer is Grant Morrison. Just cause the guy has the testicular fortitude to let his imagination run wild, and let the status quo be damned. He creates so many new characters on every run he's a part of, unlike the majority of people who just reuse the same old heroes and villains. And when he does use an established character, he reinvents them.
Lock Jaw
05-25-2013, 03:09 AM
I have a feeling that left in the old universe, Dick would have left the cowl behind around this point in Morrison's story, with Damian being killed and Batman, and Batman Inc., being considered wanted vigilantes again.
Lock Jaw
05-25-2013, 03:11 AM
I like what you like about Grant Morrison as well, but in the case of his Batman stuff... I have not liked the majority of it.... but I have found what other writers had done with the status quo he built to be fantastic.

Can definitely see why people wouldn't enjoy R.I.P., but I enjoyed it. I had long ago read about a lot of the silver age nonsense that went on in Batman, and seeing used creatively here was a bit of a mark out moment. The Black Glove Organization while unfamiliar, seemed legit scary and formidable. I also loved how Joker was both written and drawn in this as well.
Really enjoyed Grant's work on Batman and Robin. Especially with Frank Quietly on the art. Always feel like something is missing when another artist draws Morrison's work.
Used to hate Quietly, back when I first saw his work on New X-Men. At some point, possibly when reading All Star Superman, something just clicked, and I "got it", gaining a new apprectiation for his art style. It works so well, because his art is kind of surreal and disturbing, and it fit's Grants work so well, since his writing is so very often surreal and disturbing. I even went back and read New X-men and enjoyed it so much I'm going to buy the omnibus.

The CW Developing The Flash as a Spinoff of Arrow
More DC heroes look to be coming to The CW, as the network is developing The Flash -- simply titled "Flash" it seems --- as a spinoff of Arrow. Deadline reported the news, revealing Arrow’s Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg and director David Nutter are working on the project, along with DC’s Geoff Johns. The current plan is to introduce Flash on Arrow this coming season to set up the spinoff series. Berlanti and Kreisberg would run the series with Nutter – whose many pilots include Smallville and Arrow -- directing the pilot, written by Berlanti, Kreisberg and Johns. Berlanti and Kreisberg’s fellow Arrow EP Marc Guggenheim will not be involved in Flash, staying focused on Arrow.
This past year, The CW was developing a Wonder Woman series, Amazon. While that project didn’t turn into a pilot this spring, the network said in May they were still developing it. However, Deadline says the network “has hit the pause button” on Amazon, yet another frustrating delay for Wonder Woman fans hoping to see a new live-action version of that character.
However, with Arrow a hit for The CW, the network – co-owned by Warner Bros. – clearly wants to get more DC Comics adaptations on the air, as the network’s overall lineup turns increasingly to genre projects.
<!-- START: Video Embed Content Widget --><!-- START: Flash Player --><!-- END Flash Player -->
<!-- END: Video Embed Content Widget -->
It will be interesting to see how Flash is incorporated into Arrow’s world, which so far has had no characters with superpowers appear. Many of us hoping to see DC build a bigger cinematic/live-action universe have wondered if they could tie Arrow into Man of Steel, indicating Arrow takes place in the same world as that film and opening the door to super-powered characters existing. It’s still unclear if that will occur, but Flash’s introduction certainly would be interesting and raise questions about whether we’re meeting members of a potential Justice League movie cast on TV as well as film, as the Batman vs. Superman movie nears in 2015.

Batman, Incorporated ends today, as does Grant Morrison's seven-year run on the Bat.
I predict, like most Bat-things Morrison writes, it will end with a whimper rather than a bang (Final Crisis, Batman RIP, etc).
Lock Jaw
07-31-2013, 02:34 AM
Disliked most of his run. Loved what other writers were able to do with the status quo he created, though.
I would agree with that statement.
I'm really enjoying Scott Snyder's take on the bat so far, I hear Tomasi's stuff is often outstanding.
I think Grant's problem is he doesn't follow thru on anything he writes. He introduces twists and new plot developments and tends to leave them as is. I heard Kathy Kane was revealed alive in Batman Inc. I imagine nothing will come of this.
Final Crisis for all it's hype, ended up being dull and was way overshadowed by Blackest Night and Flashpoint. Batman RIP promised 'the most shocking moment in Batman's 70 year history,' and ended with Batman disappearing in the Gotham River in a helicopter explosion.
For everything I enjoy, such as the explanation for Batman's wacky adventures in the 60's and Bat-Mite, and the existence of Damian, there are all the things Grant starts and never resolves, like Dr. Hurt, Damian making a deal with the devil, the entire storyline of Mandrakk the Monitor, etc.
I was reading an interview with him where he discussed his take on Wonder Woman and I caught myself going 'oh, that sounds interesting' and then remembered it was Grant Morrison and it will go absolutely nowhere with any form of resolution, just ideas thrown up all over the place.

2001-2009, for me, was a great time to read hero books. I still have original prints of Superman/Batman with the Ed M. art. I have Ultimate Spidey number 1. A gang load of Transformers by Dreamwave before they folded. But at this point I'm good off that. Cartoons and movies for me.

Worst art in years? I believe you're thinking of the 90's.

No reason to count back that far. The art from the time I was buying every month is way better than now, save for the occasion event story where a great artist gets to work. Saying it's better than the 90s is a cop out. Everything is better than that period.

Honestly, over the past 10 years, the art work has been one of the best things about comics. It's a big part of what got me back into comics in 03'.
So many distinct, yet recognizable styles. Feel like there were a ton of books in the 90's that looked like the artists were just phoning it in. Like the art in the 3 musketeers advertisement was better than the art of the actual book.

Dunno man, I've seen no drop in quality in the industry as a whole. Maybe the books you were reading switched to artists you didn't appreciate as much, but speaking as someone who has a massive pull list, there is just as much great art now, as there was in 01'-09'.

Perhaps I could be swayed, but that's still one gripe out of two. I can't keep up with Marvel and the New 52 can go fuck itself.

Marvel is easier to follow, but by biggest gripe is how they never commit to anything.

Like why the fuck should anything matter when the status quo is going to be reset to default anyway.
I mean they still manage to tell some great stories, but there's potential for hundreds more if they would just stick to their guns.
Did any one give a shit about Scarlet Witch's return to the avengers recently? Does any one here even know about it? Imagine if they would have committed to her as a villain. Just this psycho reality warping, galactus level threat, for like 10-15 years. Her redemption could have been the event of the year, and in the mean time, you e got a truly scary threat for the marvel universe.
That's just one example. There have been countless others.

I also loved the way she "attacked" people by disassembling them into thousands of puzzle pieces. Was a really cool looking effect. Would have liked to of seen her do that to more heroes over the years.
There's also the potential of her teaming with her brother after his fall from grace. Another lost opportunity.

They did a pretty cool thing with her and Hope summers destroying the Phoenix force.

And the artwork now is great. The artists that did the latest carnage books were unreal. Too bad it was wasted on a Carnage story.

I don't count covers. I have countless covers in my HDD, they're often great. I'm talking interiors.

A lot of them do interiors. In fact I feel like more often than not, the cover art matches the interior.

Executive producer Marc Guggenheim explains how the Arrow universe can support a presumably more fantastical spin-off, The Flash:
"I think a lot of people are justified in asking 'What does this mean for Arrow in terms of its tone?' And my answer is that the trick that we have – and this is a challenge we've discusses a lot and have an awareness of how to face it head on – is the fact that 'Arrow' is like 'Iron Man' where 'The Flash' will be 'The Hulk.' And just as 'The Hulk' coming out did not change the tone of the Iron Man movies, 'The Flash' will not change the tone of 'Arrow.' We're very cognizant of what 'Arrow' is all about, and I think the Marvel movies demonstrate that each piece of a universe can have its own feel. 'Thor' is consistent with the tone of Thor while 'Captain America' is consistent with the tone of Captain America's character. 'Arrow's' tone will remain consistent much in the same way, and we are looking forward to expanding our canvass a bit. And judging from the announcement, I think the fans are looking forward to it as well."
