The only thing I don't like about the costume is that the belt needs to be yellow instead of red. Other than that, I'm digging it.

It would be too thick a portion of yellow compared to the other thin lines of it.

I just read Batman RIP and I don't think I understood like half of it.

The whole Batman: RIP comic is what enticed me to pick up Batman again. DC kept pushing it would conclude with the biggest shock in the 70+ year history of Batman.
I was so disappointed by it. I was disappointed by Batman, Inc. too.
I would recommend Batman and Robin (the first 12 issues I think) where Dick Grayson is Bats and Damian is Robin. It's well-done and switches things up where Batman is now lighthearted and Robin is serious.
I would highly recommend Scott Snyder's "The Court of Owls" as well. Good Bat stuff from Snyder. Much better than Grant Morrison.

I don't know if you guys have been reading any of DC's digital stuff, but y'all need to start reading Adventures of Superman right the fuck now. Each story arc is a different writer and artist, and they're allowed to do absolutely anything they want, completely free from the restraints of the New 52 continuity. A few of the stories are kinda meh, but when it hits, god damn does it hit.
F'rinstance, ever wonder why the Joker rarely ever tries to branch out of Metropolis?
Because the first time they met, Clark shut him down more thoroughly than Batman ever could.

I wouldn't be so hard on Injustice if DC would lay off on the whole "Ooh, what if all the good guys were bad guys?!" trope for five minutes. Between Injustice, Flashpoint, Forever Evil, Earth-2, and I'm sure I'm missing some, it seems like doing evil versions of the Justice League is the only trick they've got up their sleeves these days. Coupled with the normal good versions of the JLA being made darker and more depressing in the New 52 and Man of Steel, and in order to make a big enough contrast you have to do over-the-top shock value stuff like having Superman Heat Vision through Captain Marvel's head (bearing in mind that Captain Marvel is a ten-year-old boy), and Wonder Woman chopping up kids with a sword in Flashpoint. Meanwhile, Marvel's destroying DC in the comics and the movies by reminding everyone that this superhero shit is supposed to be fun.
And honestly, nobody's ever going to do a "Superman goes evil" story better than Mark Waid's Irredeemable.
DaveBrawl
03-25-2014, 10:34 AM
I don't know, the goofy "fun" stuff Marvel does doesn't really appeal to me all that much most of the time at least as far as the movies go. I can't really judge the comics as I haven't read many comics lately and the last ones I did were DC. That atmosphere was one of the biggest things that ruined Iron Man 3 to me. They would switch between depression and sadness, back to sarcastic and happy, and then dark and dreary at the drop of a hat. It's like they had to force that upbeat attitude in there in the middle of a man's life coming apart.
I will agree with you that the do the evil Justice League far too often for most people to care anymore though.

I'm with Kalyx on the Joker/Superman thing. Not very subtle at all. Makes Joker look like an absolute moron. He's anything but.
Joker is almost like Batman, in that he has contingencies for everything. He's insane, but he's an insane genius.
Shadow
03-26-2014, 01:05 AM
Whoever wrote that was an idiot. Joker is Batman's complete opposite. Alignment wise anyways. The way they operate on the other hand is completely the same. They always have back up plans for their back up plans. Just had a beef with Joker or something.
Nowhere Man
03-26-2014, 03:21 AM
First off, the story takes place in a Year One setting-- this is Joker's second or third outing period, and his first meeting with Superman, so no, he's not going to have "plans for everything" at that stage.
Secondly, even when he's at the top of his game, no, the Joker does not have plans for everything-- he has plans for Batman. His whole identity, his whole existence, revolves around Batman, and everyone else is just something to use against him. When he goes up against someone that doesn't fit into his "how can I use this to hurt Batman?" agenda, he usually gets his ass kicked.
And honestly, I've never bought the "he has plans for everything ever" routine as anything but an excuse for writers to pull deus ex machina out of their asses like a plot-contrivance utility belt, and it only ever seems to come up for the sake of people in the Bat-Franchise to make sure they're the coolest person in the room, usually at the expense of the entire DC Universe. Superman fights Lex Luthor all the time, the straight-up smartest man in the world, who has basically infinite resources, and who has devoted his life to killing and undermining him--to say nothing of Brainiac, who's the same thing on a cosmic scale-- but I'm supposed to believe that a homeless clown with some bombs is going to outclass them? Bullshit.

I'm with Fignuts, man.
At first I thought the dialogue was gonna be another 'World of Cardboard' thing for Superman and he puts the Clown Prince of Crime in his place, but then things got seriously meta enough to take me out of the story and I know the writer had to have had some kind of issue with Joker as a fictional character.
There's been tons of moments in comics where one character lays in to another with a 'Why You Suck' speech. Many of which delivered from Emma Frost. I have no qualms with a nice stinging deconstruction. That's fine. But those panels up there is a writer burying, HHH style, one of the greatest villains of all time. Maybe he's just a Superman fanboy. Maybe he hates the Joker character. Who knows... But consider the implications of this, as well as why I think DC should have asked for a rewrite:
- When you have a scene where it goes from 'Why You Suck' to 'Why this character fucking sucks balls', you undermine a character and remove his validity as a threat in his home Universe. Yeah we get it; there's a ton of villains that Superman would absolutely mop, and that's why certain heroes simply have to stay their lane. Clark can go to Central City and clean it up; so what? Let's toss Big S in every city. DC Universe is cleaned up sans the truly powerful threats - the Luthor's and the Darksieds. That's nice.
- This also has the side-effect of making Batman out to be just as invalid a hero. A major theme is how he does what he does without magic or being meta-human. He deals with some of the most chilling villains ever seen. "But if it was Superman he'd handle it." Right? Right? Fuck Batman and his toolset, why don't he make an Iron Man suit that does everything a Kryptonian can. Right? It pisses on Batman, pisses on his rogues gallery, all for this writer to mock up some Kryptonian porn.
- "Get the hell out of my city" might as well be "Get the hell out of comics" with a speech like that.
- The Justice League cartoons and even before that, the Superman/Batman crossover movie of the DCAU era, also used the fact that Clark can handle Joker - often to a matter of fact effect. But under no circumstance did they 'bury' the Joker. He was a threat. And he even carried one JL episode as the sole threat. For the Justice League. That's not Joker fanboyism, that's just the danger of a 'crazy genius' guy like the Joker. His menace is not just that he can gather "cheap gasoline" and plant it in semi-random places. If that was the case Bruce wouldn't take his schemes so super-seriously.
So yeah I didn't take kindly to that above scene. Not as a Joker, Superman, or batman fanboy - as a comic fan. It does serious disservice to several characters and comic tropes at once - including Superman himself. What does "Anybody could play you/write you" even mean in a comic universe setting? How does that not clue you in that the writer's trying to make some point?
Just passive aggressive and blatant and counter-productive.
Nowhere Man
03-26-2014, 11:49 AM
I'm sorry, but no. One out-of-continuity comic where a writer goes meta does not bury or destroy a character. And frankly, after seeing a hundred different writers take their turns tearing Superman down and dragging him through the mud, it's refreshing to see someone turn it on one of the bad guys for once. If the Joker is so fragile that he can't take one monologue in a non-canon story without being undermined and destroyed forever, then to be honest he probably wasn't all he was cracked up to be to begin with.
As for heroes having to stay in their box or risk ruining the fun for other characters, that pretty much applies only to Gotham City. Non-S villains like Sinestro, Grodd, Black Adam, Ares, Malefa'ac, et al could put a serious hurt on Clark, so I really don't have a problem with Superman dropping into Central City or wherever to lend a hand. Hell, people fight each other's villains all the time in the Marvel universe without it being a problem. It's only Gotham that causes this division, without having to ramp up character favoritism.
I love me some Batman, and I love me some Joker, I really do. But the protective bubble that writers have placed over Gotham, to where no other characters are ever allowed to look cool or effective in the presence of someone in the Bat-Franchise, is fucking ridiculous. Time and time again, they make this huge deal about how hey, fuck superpowers, just get Batman to handle it while all the mega-powered demigods and aliens are tripping over their own feet. For the sake of making sure Batman and Gotham City as a whole are never made out to be anything less than the coolest thing ever, the rest of the entire DC Universe is made to look weak and ineffectual.
So no, I don't mind Superman trouncing Joker and making Batman's job look easy. God knows if there's one franchise that needs to be taken down a peg or two, it's that one.

Just so we're clear; that is Kevin Conroy, Tara Strong, and CCH Pounder returning for their characters (Tara replaces Arleen as Harley for all media - including a cameo on Arrow).
Troy Baker reprises his Origins Joker role, Hammil sits this one out.
The story is essentially on the outskirts of a typical Batman vs Joker event, which is a unique perspective.

Kind of a bummer that Man of Steel was more a vehicle for a DC Cinematic Universe than kick starting his own series. WB may be going at this in a linear way rather than MCU's converge/diverge film style. That might be a good thing, but I'm not so sure they know what they're doing right now.

BATNEWS!!!
DC Comics has announced two new ongoing Batman-related titles launching this October: Gotham Academy arrives October 1, and Arkham Manor streets on October 22.
The new monthly teen drama series Gotham Academy is written by Becky Cloonan (American Virgin, Demo) and Brenden Fletcher (Wednesday Comics), with art by Karl Kerschl (Adventures of Superman). Set at Gotham City’s prestigious prep school, where weird things keep happening and rich benefactors like Bruce Wayne are always dropping by, the series promises new characters and old, and a secret tie to Gotham’s past.
Arkham Manor is written by Gerry Duggan (Deadpool, Nova), with art by Shawn Crystal (Deadpool, Wolverine and Deadpool). When a catastrophe causes the shutdown of Arkham Asylum, where will Gotham City house its most dangerous inmates? Apparently in Wayne Manor.
Cover images are from EW.

DC Entertainment will release the 1960s Japanese series Batman: The Jiro Kuwata Batmanga in a series of three paperbacks in late 2014, after a digital weekly run, according to the LA Times.
The manga series was created in 1966, during the height of the first Batman craze, spurred by the import of the American Batman TV show. Weekly manga magazine Shonen King licensed the right to commission its own original Batman and Robin stories, which were drawn by manga-ka Jiro Kuwata.
Chip Kidd collected much of the series in 2008’s Bat-Manga! The Secret History of Batman in Japan, which was released by Pantheon, which also includes a comprehensive photo collection of vintage Japanese Batman toys and an interview with Kuwata (see “Bat Manga! The Secret History of Batman in Japan”).
This release will include the entire 1,000-plus page run, presented in the original manga right-to-left reading order. MSRP and release dates on the planned paperback release were not provided.

Yeah, but still, I mean............DC has a super-high-tech city run by super-intelligent gorillas, a Jurassic Park island full of dinosaurs, underwater kingdoms and island nations of sexy Amazon warrior women, tons of different crazy alien civilizations and parallel universes and time-travelers who interact with the modern world all the time......and yet everyone only seems interested in the giant slum-city where life sucks and nobody gets any better. It just seems, I dunno, un-ambitious.

I still hate the costume with a fiery passion, but I'm kinda sorta really digging the comics themselves. Action Comics has been pretty amazing from the start IMO, and has only gotten better with Greg Pak taking the reins from Grant Morrison, bringing a similar level of creativity as Morrison but more accessible. Scott Snyder and Jim Lee's Superman Unchained has been a lot of fun too, if not on the same level as Snyder's Batman stuff. Adventures of Superman was fantastic, and I hate that it got canceled. And even though I don't like them together, the Superman/Wonder Woman book has done a great job of showing their relationship as both a duo and as a couple.
The main Superman comic itself has been pretty terrible, but it looks like they're trying to turn it around with Geoff Johns and Romita Jr. Johns' last run on Superman was amazing, and his first issue back on the book looks like he hasn't lost his touch.
Justice League is still awful, though.

Would have been cool on Stephanie Brown.
Nowhere Man
07-11-2014, 03:34 PM
Well, Barbara's supposed to be the same age as Dick Grayson, who's only about 21 or 22 in the New 52 continuity, so it makes sense that she'd look younger too. I know that continuity-wise that it doesn't really add up, since now both of their careers are ridiculously compressed, but that's more the fault of DC trying to have their cake and eat it too when it comes to the Bat-Family history in the reboot.
Personally, I think they should've hit the hard reset on Batman just like they did with everybody else. If Barbara's Batgirl again, have her just be Batgirl, not the Superheroine Formerly Known As Oracle. It's pretty clear at this point that they don't have any plans to do anything with Stephanie Brown or Cassandra Cain, so Batgirl should have already filled the "late-teen/early-twentysomething girl superhero" slot from the start-- y'know, Batgirl, not The Other, Not-Lesbian Batwoman.
Really, though, I'm just happy that they're giving a major character a more upbeat-sounding book-- anything from DC that isn't more depressing ultra-violent garbage can only be a good thing, right?

Well it all have to start with Zod's hijack message happening on both Arrow and Flash, and dealing with the ramification of that event like Winter Soldier to Agents. However, this would confirm more than a few elements preceding Superman, such as metahumans and superheroes - both of which being treated as brand new on Man of Steel as a plot point.
Just too late to make that call, I guess.

Nowhere Man
07-22-2014, 06:20 PM
While I can see how difficult it would be to integrate MoS into Arrow's continuity at this point, it does seem rather silly to have two different live-action DC Universes going on at the same time-- four, if we're counting Gotham and Constantine. Plus, it likely means that a lot of the guys showing up in Arrow and Flash won't be in the Justice League movie, and a Justice League without the Flash is unacceptable.

There's no reason to believe we won't see a movie version of the Flash. I also like that they're separating the movie universe from the tv one. All you're doing is potentially hampering creativity by forcing different writers and directors to stick to a certain continuity or style that they are not apart of. The reason it works for Marvel is because that was the plan all along. Clearly, DC is not following suit nor should they feel the need to.
In comics news, after falling behind the current Batman run, I have caught up on the current Zero Year arc, and have to say that I am eagerly anticipating the climax in the next issue. I am also eager to hear where it goes from there.
Well it all have to start with Zod's hijack message happening on both Arrow and Flash, and dealing with the ramification of that event like Winter Soldier to Agents. Neat. I wonder if that's going to tie in with the Arrow/Flash 'verse. Because if it is, then I think it's kinda weird of DC to allow major characters from Superman and Batman-- even sidekicks like Supergirl and primary villains like Ra's al Ghul-- into those shows, but not allow Superman and Batman themselves.

Also I don't really think Lucifer would work with, say, The Flash or Arrow. There's potential for a Constantine crossover I suppose, or in an ideal world fucking SANDMAN, but I don't think it would all work under one 'universe'.
Lock Jaw
09-17-2014, 09:03 PM
Sandman was in the DC Universe, and it "worked". They don't have to be constantly referring to the other shows/characters. Just maybe the occasional wink and nod... or maybe someone like Deadshot shows up at Lucifer's club. Would still be en entirely different show with an entirely different mood and feel, but would feel like it is in a coherent universe.
But anyways, I don't really care too much either way. Just thought it would be "cool" if they did, but have no problem at all that it isn't.

Consider this one of those "I'll believe it when I see it" things but the president of CW rather specially said that their CW-verse heroes could certainly cross over with the planned Titans series on another channel. Now something like that can't completely be up to him, until you consider the Arrow/Flash creators also have a hand in Titans and also Supergirl being planned now. I suppose this would highlight whether or not different networks are a stronger separating force than the fact that they're all DC TV.
This would also raise the question on just how difficult it actually is for the big movie companies to FUCKING GIVE US WHAT WE WANT AND PLAY TOGETHER.

Sequel to JL War, which follows Flashpoint. Note; Son of Batman was also in this New 52 Animated Universe (sigh), but Assault on Arkham was not (that's based on the games). And so it goes:
New 52 Animated Universe
Flashpoint
Justice League War
Son of Batman
Thrown of Atlantis
And while we're on a nerdy roll:
CW-Verse
Arrow
Flash
Suicide Squad (Rumored)
Supergirl (In Talks/Rumored)
Titans (In Talks/Going Forward)
Gotham and Constantine are, far as we can tell, stand-alone. Gotham enough for good reasons, and Constantine only recently played with the big boys in the comics anyway. A new movie version of Johnny boy will appear in Tel Toro's Justice League Dark movie, which will feature Zatanna, Swamp Thing, and The Demon. Not sure if they will be set in the new DC Cinematic Universe; which so far is Man of Steel, Batman v Superman (ugh), and eventually Justice League and "The Batman" (rumored but likely).
DC has made it very clear that TV shows will not cross over with the movies.
With all this world building, I'm kinda sad the Angela Basset's Amanda Waller was wasted on Green Lantern.

So, I just finished reading "Doomed," the big Superman event for this year. This was a pretty fun one, not perfect by any stretch, but it's the first time in a long while that a Superman story has felt appropriately big and crazy and ridiculous.
The ending, though, might end up being a big fucking deal.
Spoilers ahead, obviously.
Okay, so Superman's been doing this whole Jekyll-and-Hyde thing where he's been infected with spores that are turning him into another Doomsday. But it turns out that Doomsday and the new 'SuperDoom' (yes, that's what they call him) are just a distraction, and the real threat is Brainiac, who's trying to absorb the minds of everyone on Earth so he can become powerful enough to remake the universe.
There's a lot of crazy shit, including Wonder Woman diving into the Phantom Zone to beat up Mongul and take over the Warworld to shoot at Brainiac's mother-ship, and Lois Lane temporarily becoming an avatar for Brainiac only to then use his godlike psychic powers against him, and all sorts of fun stuff like that.
The part that really matters, though, is the end. The good guys have smashed Brainiac's ship, thwarted his plan, and all that's left is to deal with Brainy himself. Superman flies himself and Brainiac into a black hole, where they end up outside of the Universe.....
....and into the old DC Universe. Holy shit yes.

What? There's an animated Suicide Squad movie? Why am I just learning this now?
Also, words cannot express how little I care about seeing a Cyborg movie. Generally can't stand Cyborg anymore since the new 52 and his bump up in "importance". He was alright as a Titan.

Yeah why are you just learning this now? It's set in the Arkham games' universe and it's totally fun. Jennifer Hale returns to voice Killer Frost from the DCAU days and Kevin Conroy of course does his thing. Pounder also lends her voice again to Amanda Waller and Troy Baker completely nails Mark Hammil's Joker. It's pretty cool. And Deadshot's really coming up in the game.
I also found it strange that Cyborg's been getting more exposure. He never stood out to me. Seems like Tokenism really but he was pretty cool in Justice League War.

I feel like Cyborg is only supposed to be important now because Geoff Johns didn't want Hal Jordan to miss out being in the Justice League, since the role of "A-list superhero who happens to be black" could have been pretty easily filled by John Stewart. Green Lantern's always been a big name in the DCU, and thanks to the animated universe, we already know one of the main GLs is black, so there wouldn't have been any need to shoe-horn in Cyborg and kick out Martian Manhunter. But Johns is one of the big-wigs in DC now, and he can't get enough of some Hal Jordan, so now we all have to pretend that the least interesting Teen Titan totally belongs as a founding member of the Justice League.
Rumour has it Tom Hardy and Will Smith are "in close to signing on" for roles as members of the Suicide Squad.
I think having big names is the only way to draw people to see SS, but I don't see them doing this. Just no way.

Some details from the upcoming Supergirl TV series:
Casting is now underway for a series based on DC Comics' "Supergirl," with David Rapaport -- the casting director that found Stephen Amell and Grant Gustin for "Arrow" and "The Flash" -- tacking on the job of finding the CBS show's lead hero and her older sister.
With the call out for actresses wishing to play the lead Kryptonian, TVLine has posted details of the exact type of Supergirl the show is looking for. For the lead role of Kara Zor-El, aka Kara Danvers, Rapaport is looking for "Caucasian females, age 22 to 26, to play 24." This iteration of Supergirl will have arrived on Earth at the age of 12 where she was taken in by the Danvers family. The series is expected to follow her journey from shunning her super abilities to embracing them as she earns the name Supergirl.
The casting notice also includes information about another lead role, Kara's foster sister Alexandra "Alex" Danvers. For that part, the casting director is seeking someone to play a "gorgeous, brilliant, science-minded" 26-year-old that grew up jealous of her other-worldly sister. Now Alex works for a secret government organization and will come up against just as many challenges as her super sister.
So.... sounds pretty much like it is going to be girl Smallville.
