1) After years of debating and negotiating, Australia will finally have an R18+ rating for games by the end of the year. The move will allow each territory the choice to make mature rated games legal for sale or not while also ending the required banning or censorship/editing of mature rated games.
2) As part of a push by Sony to keep as many of the free PSN+ users once the month ends, the company is offering those who renew to a 12 month plan a free gift between two choices. The choices are either an extra 3 months to make it a 15 month plan or Rally Online Arcade game for free on PSN.
3) Capcom has announced a new collaboration in the VS series and this time its not a game but instead a marketing partnership with the Hello Kitty company. Capcom will allow Hello Kitty characters to be dressed up in Street Fighter costumes to be used in a wide variety of merchandise products.
Just a random thought. I'd love to see someone adapt, say, Mario 3 to a movie. Basically recreate the iconic moments and levels in movie form. You have actual, Muppet-like enemies (Goombas, Koopa Troopers, etc) and just essentially go through the game in an hour an a half, with obvious added dialog. It'd basically be an action movie.

I was reading last week that they had plans to do something like that for the SMB movie. The original script took place is what we recognise as the Mushroom Kingdom with hills and grass and sunshine.
Bowser was going to be a giant turtle-like reptile, he would have his Doomship/Airship etc. It was all very faithful to the games but they couldn't afford it so had to do rewrite after rewrite until they had a doable script.
Edit: Here (http://www.smbmovie.com/SMBArchive/preproduction/script.htm) are the scripts. There is one that's close to the games, one that is inspired by Ghostbusters, one inspired by Die-Hard (:wtf:) and one inspired by Mad Max.
Damn.
Why couldn't Nintendo afford that? :foc:

It was the early 90's. Effects would have been very expensive. I can never say or type that without thinking of Mr Dink from Doug.
They could always pull a "Marvel" and open their own studio. CG Mario movies would be great. Charles Martinet does 98% of the Mario cast and those 5 minute shorts Mario Tennis/Golf had as intros were always fun to watch.

Actually, it had very little to do with budget (at least at first). As mentioned on the site, the director of the fantasy production left the project, which left it flailing for nearly a year. No one, Harold Ramis included, wanted to take on the project.
Finally, directors Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel expressed interest, but they had an entirely new concept. So, the original production was scrapped and their vision was given a chance.
Unfortunately, by that point they had already spent $10 million or so on the fantasy production, which took a fair chunk out of the sci-fi production's budget.

It's probably explained on the site but how did you get a hold of the scripts in the first place?

Having personally spoken to the original writers of the fantasy script I can assure you that that isn't the case.
It's probably explained on the site but how did you get a hold of the scripts in the first place?
We found most of the scripts via script resellers or auction sites, while all the Parker Bennett & Terry Runté materials were given to us by Parker himself. (We're actually going to update the site with an interview we conducted with him next weekend. Lots of tidbits about the development of the concept)

Nintendo is considering remaking Majora's Mask for the 3DS in a similar way to what they did to Ocarina of Time for the handheld.
Eiji Aonuma said the reason OoT got a remake was due to the high demand from the fans and because OoT has sold very well so far, if the fans demand for Majora's Mask to be remade then Nintendo would start on the project.
"It's been 13 years since Ocarina of Time was originally released, and one of the big things that we made this remake possible was that there was an outpour of emotions from people who said they would like to see this game done," said Aonuma. "We said we could do it in 3D, so we did. I think certainly if there was a similar output of emotion and clamor from fans for a remake of Majora's Mask, it wouldn't be an utter impossibility."
Aonuma did hint Majora's Mask wouldn't just be a simple graphical and 3D-effect update like OoT but the 3-Day system would be reworked to take advantage of handheld gaming. He mentioned there wouldn't be a need to rush to complete parts of the game and fit into the traditional short time play nature of handhelds.
"Thinking on it now, having a handheld Majora’s Mask where you could kind of just set things down on your own time – close it, set it aside and come back to it later – might be a game play element some fans will actually take to and might really appreciate. Especially considering how you really had to rush through the original game, in a sense."

Also discussed was the M-rating for the game was done on purpose unlike the previous games being T-rated and no collector's edition for the game is being planned.
2) EA hints Madden 12 will have very outdated rosters and the roster update will occur later than usual. The reasons given were due to the massive amount of moves teams will be doing this year and the shorter than normal time gap from rosters being locked till game is released.

EA's relationship with Valve takes another hit as another EA game has been pulled from Steam.
Dragon Age II has been pulled with no official reason given by either side but rumored reports are saying it might be due to EA's refusal to allow Steam the ability to sell the DLC packs for the game.
EA is trying the same tactic they did with Crysis 2 in having DLC packs available for sale on Origin but not on Steam while also making demands that their games on Steam have full access to stuff not on Steam servers.
Valve is upset EA continues to violate their terms of service with Steam and does not want to keep repatching Steam every time EA wants to add a new game or feel like changing the previous agreement. They are also upset how EA continues its refusal of sharing any DLC revenue while demanding Valve allows all stuff from Origin and restricting what Steam is allowed to do.
Valve previously patched Steam to allow Mass Effect 2 and other games (mainly Free-To-Play) access to DLC content not on Steam servers and it appears Valve doesn't want to go through the hassle of patching Steam again just to please EA every time.

2) After previously dropping and patching out the DRM requiring a constant internet connection, Ubisoft reveals Driver: San Francisco on the PC will have the same type of DRM returning. The game will also be the 1st Ubisoft game on consoles to use the Uplay Passport for online modes.
3) Konami delays Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater on the 3DS from the original Fall 2011 release date to now a TBA 2012 date. The company did not give a reason for the delay but stressed the Japanese version is still on schedule for a Fall 2011 release.

THQ has killed off the Red Faction series and no longer is willing to even consider working on future games for the series.
Poor sales of the recent games and lack of consumer interest in the series was given as the reason for THQ to pull the plug.
Brian Farrell, the THQ chief executive, told investors that "we do not intend to carry forward with that franchise in any meaningful way."

Lol, EA.
While I'm not blind to say that Valve are saints, I'm glad they're doing this and I hope EA takes a hit.
I was looking at pre-ordering The Old Republic, but Origin is the single most expensive place to buy it, they claimed that their digital copies were limited (by what? The digital delivery unicorns? Fuck off) AND they wanted an extra Ł5 for the honor of pre-ordering. Not a Ł5 deposit, an extra Ł5.
If you want EA PC games, grab them from here: http://www.cdkeyhouse.com . They're usually better than half price.

Capcom's fiscal report for the last quarter has shown the company's profits declined by 57% in comparison to the same quarter last year and overall revenue for this year is down by 23%.
In terms of actual profits, the company earned just $4.3 million for the quarter.
While the company is happy with the current sales of Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition and Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, they are blaming the lack of new games as the main cause of the decline.
Even with the 80% increase in profits from their mobile division compared to last year, it wasn't enough to prevent a drop.
While it wasn't mentioned in the report, the company earlier had strong plans to boost the end of the quarter's revenues based on the Prototype paid demo for Mega Man Legends 3 game. The delay and eventual cancellation of that game prevented the expected boost Capcom was expecting.
Capcom is still expecting Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, Street Fighter X Tekken, and the two new Resident Evil games will provide the majority of sales and boost for their next quarter.

Quick News Round-Up:
1) In an update to yesterday's EA-Valve news, EA is now completely blaming Valve for the mess involving Dragon Age II's regarding its DLC not avaliable on Steam. EA said "We hope to work out an agreement to keep our games on Steam," even though in reality neither side is willing to discuss a way to end the situation with the biggest issue being EA wanting Origin to replace Steam.
2) Insomniac details the Resistance 3 beta will start on August 4 for early access invites (SOCOM 4), followed by European PS+ users on August 10, and then US/Canada PS+ users on August 23. Austin, TX – In a move likely to shock absolutely no one, Devolver Digital CFO and massage parlor enthusiast Fork Parker has revealed that plans for his company’s digital download game service, codenamed “Krundle”, have been abandoned.
“I think we could have revolutionized how I make a shitload of money,” said CFO Fork Parker. “But the reality is Steam is an amazing digital platform. That’s where we want to distribute our top-tier titles like Serious Sam 3: BFE to generate the kind of revenue it takes to buy things like velvet-covered jet skis. Holy crap, did I just invent those?”
The proposed service was set to radically change the digital distribution marketplace with features not seen in any other online offering:
Unconventional preorder incentives like in-game nachos and undetonated Cold War era munitions
Free-to-Play-for-Fifty-Bucks games wherein the consumer is free to play the game once it is purchased for $50
Complimentary Portuguese adult films with purchases of $200 or more
While breakthrough concepts found in the now aborted download service may never see the light of day, Devolver Digital pledges to move the industry forward and keep bringing genuinely unique games to the hungry masses.
“I guess consumers could also sign-up for EA’s Origin service if they are into 10-year-old train simulators,” claimed Fork. “But you can be sure those sons of bitches will never deliver in-game nachos.”
More nonsense can we found at http://twitter.com/devolverdigital on the internets.

The fallout from the disappointing financial report from Nintendo continues as the company's president, Iwata, takes full blame for the situation and will be taking a 50% pay cut to go along with reduced bonuses regardless if Nintendo rebounds later in the year.
Also announced was Miyamoto along with other high executives will be taking a 20-30% pay cut while the former president of Nintendo has lost over $300 million in stock wealth due to the news.
Iwata announced the company's drastic cut in price for the 3DS was to prevent another "Gamecube'' situation where he felt the company waited too long to react to the initial decline with the Gamecube until it was too late.
Besides the price cut for the 3DS and the Ambassador Program for free games, the company also announced it is reworking the Virtual Console for the 3DS to allow LAN and potentially online multiplayer starting with the NES games on the service. This is a reverse of initial philosophy of having the games be played in their classic or original state with the Wii.
The price drop has upset some retailers in Japan who have announced they are refusing to sell their current stock or order any new stock until the price cut takes effect on August 11.

The studio didn't mention if the games will only be HD ports from the DS games or include new games in the series.
2) EA announces it has no interest in 3D technology for their games with the main concern of their audience is not concerned for 3D at the moment. This news contradicts earlier announcements of the company supporting the 3D on the 3DS as a new way to play.
3) In a report from Japan, the PS Vita will not be using a custom CPU chip made by Sony as initially expected but instead from Sony's main rival Samsung. Rumor: Mirror’s Edge 2 Running On Battlefield 3’s Engine
You know how Battlefield 3 looks absolutely stunning? That's because it's on a new engine, Frostbite 2. And if rumours are to be believed, so too is Mirror's Edge 2.
While EA's Frank Gibeau first hinted at a new ME project back at E3, even coyly playing along with speculation it may be on Battlefield 3's engine, Britain's Official PlayStation Magazine is out-and-out claiming that "the Frostbite 2 engine will pave the way for Mirror's Edge to make a free-running return."
Just to keep your feet on the ground, remember, there's been absolutely zero confirmation that Mirror's Edge 2 is even in development, let alone what engine it's using.

The once cancelled True Crime: Hong Kong game will be reappearing as Square-Enix announced they have bought rights to the True Crime: Hong Kong game and will resume development and funding for the game.
Square-Enix will be re-branding the game itself and will have the original development team for the game, United Front Stduios, work in collaboration with their own London studio for development. The company did not reveal what they will be changing but they did mention how the majority of the stuff shown previously will most likely stay for the final game.
While Activision sold off the rights to the TC Hong Kong game, they still own the rights to the franchise and is expected to see how well consumers react to the new game before deciding on the series fate. The original reason Activision dropped the TC Hong Kong game was due to too much money spent during development and they felt the series wasn't able to reach Grand Theft Auto levels in sales and reception.
The game should still be expected at least for the PS3 and Xbox 360 with the original PC version unknown or any additional consoles added.

EA reveals their new EA Sports Season Ticket subscription plan officially starts today and Madden 12 will be the first game to use the service.
At the cost of $25, EA is allowing members early access to DLC at a 20% discount along with free access to all web content for their sports games. Gamestop was confirmed as the exclusive retailer to sell the Season Ticket pass in stores.
Madden 12 was revealed to allow members to download and play the game early on August 27 while non-members have to wait until the official release date of August 30 for the game.
As of now the plan will only be available on PSN and XBLA (2,000 MS Points).
The pass covers Madden NFL 12, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12, NCAA Football 12, FIFA 12, and NHL 12, providing players with early download access to the titles ahead of retail stores (you'll still have to make a trip out to the store on launch day, if you don't want a solely digital copy), a 20% discount on all downloadable content, and special free "web perks," which are as yet unspecified, save for FIFA, which will be getting Creation Center packs, with additional assets to build custom teams and tournaments.
The plan does not give a discount for the EA Online Pass nor a discount for sports games DLC released earlier in the year but under the '12 series (ex. NCAA 12). The accounts are also non-transferable unlike EA Accounts and the discounts only apply to the console the Season Ticket pass was purchased on.
The plan does not include the rumored persistent career-mode EA was rumored to be working on earlier. That plan is expected to be a separate subscription plan and won't arrive until 2012 at the earliest.

The funny thign is, Notch's own justification for why it's a scam actually does a decent job at indicating why this may be quite possible, quite soon.
Even his newer justification for why he thinks it's a scam largely falls short.

Even though Capcom dropped the plan to charge for the cancelled Prototype paid demo for Mega Man Legends 3, the company is still goinh through with the idea of charging consumers for demos as part of a new plan to raise money for the company.
The company is starting the new plan in Japan and for the time being only for upcomming 3DS games but could expand the plan to other consoles and regions in the near future.
The first game to use the new paid demo plan will be Nazo Waku Yakata and similar to Dead Rising 2, the "prequel" or intial chapter of the game will be sold seperatly to people who want to play part of the game early.
Similar to the original plans for the Prototype demo, Capcom is charging 200 Yen ($2.50) for the demo of the game.
It appears the main reason Capcom is going through with the new plan was due to the high demand of consumers willing to pay for the Prototype demo for Mega Man Legends 3 and the strong sales of the Case Zero "paid demo" from Dead Rising 2.

2) In a meeting with investors, Nintendo reveals it is reworking their plans for the Wii U with the biggest concerns revolving on having a strong launch for the system and a flow of games to prevent another "3DS" situation. Also revealed was the initial price for both the system and controller is being rethought with the current push towards a lower price for both as a way to gain consumer trust back again and to prevent another early price drop due to weak sales if it was at a more expensive price.
3) The voice actor for GlaDOS from the Portal series leaked in a tweet Valve currently is working on another project in the Portal series and also a brand new game that will feature her voice.

"We have a government grant – so no, it is not a hoax! We have real time demonstrations."
Good to know the Australian Government wastes their money just as well as the American Government.

EA could be forced to end their standoff with Valve and Steam and even give Steam some of the once exclusive Origin PC games (ex. Battlefield 3) due to the early estimates of a NCAA players lawsuit reaching a potential $1 billion in damages.
The lawsuit could alter how EA handles the NCAA football franchise with options ranging from excluding schools that had members in the class action lawsuit to unlicensed teams meant to represent certain schools and conferences.
EA is also currently investing heavily into their career modes for coaches and players (ex. Path to Glory, Coaching Carousel) due to those modes not requiring real-world stats and results since those modes are controlled by the user. This would be the backup plan if EA indeed looses the lawsuit and has to pay a large settlement fee.
EA is attempting to counter by claiming NCAA athletes likeness and appearances would count as fair use or protected under the First Amendment as a way to not pay for certain athletes. They are also using the case Jim Brown lost when he tried to sue to get money for his likeness in video games but want it applied in a much broader scale to cover an entire league or system.
A cocktail-napkin calculation about what's at stake in former NCAA players' lawsuit against EA Sports arrived at a potential cash-and-prizes value of $1 billion. But as apocalyptic as that total sounds, Electronic Arts doesn't sound too worried.
...
Kidding aside, I'm not sure how to take Rovell's figuring, which gained a lot of traction largely because he is the nation's biggest name covering sports business. The pricetag assumes a few things, not least is that the players prevail in this class action suit. They very well could, but their case against EA Sports depends upon a finding, under Indiana state law, that EA knowingly, willfully or intentionally violated players' rights to publicity.

2) Team Bondi reveals due to Rockstar refusing to fund any more of their projects, the studio is current looking into being merged or bought out by another publisher. As of now the studio is in discussion with KMM studio (Mad Max, Happy Feet, etc) with the main reason due to a large amount of former Bondi employees work at that company.
3) The Rambo series is coming back to video games as a studio in the UK, Reef Entertainment, announced they have bought the rights to the series and are currently in development of the first game. Sony debuts a new program for PSN called PlayStation Network PLAY which is set to start on August 23 and run until September 13.
Similar to Microsoft's summer deals, Sony is setting aside 1 game per week to be given special status with each game set at a $15 price tag. As additional incentives, Sony is giving Playstation Plus members a 20% discount on every title while everyone who buys all four titles gets PayDay: The Heist for free on PSN.
Sony is also giving away 1 free piece of DLC per game in the program as a way to counter the lack of exclusives in comparison to Microsoft's yearly sale.
Street Fighter III Third Strike Online Edition starts the program on August 23, followed by Death Spank "The Baconing" on August 30, then BloodRayne: Betrayal on September 6, and Renegade Ops finishes the program on September 13.

New details on the upcomming Borderlands 2 was officially revealed with the release of Game Informer magazine this month.
Some new changes for the game in comparision to the first game are better animations for non-playable characters, better models for guns to make them appear unqiue instead of too many guns sharing the same appearance, and a more refined skill tree with emphasis on abilities and depth.
* Each manufacturer will have their own visual styling/theme. The purpose of this is to be able to easily identify a weapon's manufacturer and quality by simple looking at it. No manufacturers will have the same looking gun.
* NPC's will be fully animated and move around their locations, interacting with objects within their locations
* Gearbox wants to make 4 seating standard on each vehicle
*Class mods and Artifacts will be returning
*BL2's skill tree will maintain the 3 Branch system and have more defined abilities rather than simple stat boosts. It is unknown how many skills will occupy each branch.
*2 Gunzerker Skills were mentioned. One, increases the fire rate of any weapon the longer the trigger is held down. A second, while Dual-wielding, increases accuracy with same class weapons, or doubles damage for different class weapons.
The game is set for release on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 with an TBA release date for now due to the game being in early development.

As part of the recent attempt to overhaul the entire company, THQ announces it has laid off 200 jobs, closed another 2 studios, and killed off another 2 game series.
THQ's main Australian studio called THQ Brisbane and a developer studio also located in Australia called Blue Tongue were both shut down. Along with some other moves, the total number of people laid off was around 200 this time.

THQ initially started the restructuring last year due to very poor fiscal year and the weak sales of UFC resulting in that series moving from an annual to 2-year schedule.

I think THQ admitted the big mistake was focusing the development and advertising on the Xbox 360 and PS3 and ignoring the Wii which ended up being a huge blunder. In a move similar to the recent news of Blizzard's Diablo III allowing items to be officially traded, Valve announces it is in the process of creating a trading service for Steam that will allow item-based trading.
Unlike Diablo III allowing cash for items, Valve's plan will not allow cash to be used and only items ranging from Team Fortress 2 hats to actual retail games to other in-game collectibles.
The service is being called "Steam Trading beta" and will only allow trades to be done with people on a friend's list. As of now only Team Fortress 2 items use the service but Portal 2 is expected to be included soon.
Also revealed are games received as gifts in Steam can be traded away while potentially the service could expand to any game in a person's collection. However, Valve is restricting potential game trading to only games that were never played or never registered to prevent issues with DRM and other security features.

A new Counter-Strike is currently in development after Valve announced today they are co-working on the new CS project with Hidden Path Entertainment. Hidden Path Entertainment previously worked on Counter Strike Source and is using their experience co-developing the new title.
The game is currently being titled as Counter Strike: Global Operations and will feature a lot of new content such as leaderboards, more mods and characters, new maps along with updated remakes of classic maps, and a 5-on-5 mode using a modified Source Engine.
Unlike previous CS games, CS: GO is being developed as a download-only title with Xbox Live Arcade, PSN, and Steam as the confirmed platforms for the game. The game was also given a release date of early 2012 with the first public showing occurring at Eurogamer Expo 2011 and PAM Prime later this year.
[quote[In a press release, Valve said that "CS: GO features new maps, characters, and weapons and delivers updated versions of the classic CS content (de_dust, etc.). In addition, CS: GO will introduce new gameplay modes, matchmaking, leader boards, and more." [/quote]

1) Microsoft admits a glitch involving their Xbox Rewards Program ended up giving away thousands of free points to Rewards members before Microsoft found out and fixed the glitch. The glitch occured during normal MS Points payments but instead of paying out the correct amounts, the glitch caused payments to be sent multiple times although Microsoft has stated the free points will not be taken back.
2) Update on the Ambassador Program for the 3DS reveals the free NES games will intially be exact replicas from their Wii VC versions but with a limited manual. An update later in the year will bring full manuals and wireless multiplayer for certain NES games while the future GBA set will have everything except replacing save states with the in-game save systems.
3) Hideo Kojima confirms the Metal Gear Solid HD set will have more games than just the intially assumed Metal Gear Solid 2, MGS 3, and MGS Peace Walker. The original Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 games are being included in the set while Japan was confirmed to be missing Peace Walker from the set.

Valve releases a teaser trailer today for their upcoming DOTA 2 game with the official debut and details on the game expected during Gamescom 2011 as part of the promotion and contest they are holding during the event.
Screens for the game was leaked around the same time and were confirmed to be actual gameplay screens but from an older build of the game. The sources involved with the leak revealed the current build screens have not been leaked and are with Valve for the upcoming expo in Germany.
Yes, these are screenshots of DOTA 2 but we do not know how old they are, and as we said already, the current UI will be way improved. So, take this for the general models, actual surfaces and atmosphere but we'd recommend to wait until GamesCom (yes, only 2 days now!) to actually make any decisions on the game!
The game is expected for a release later this year on both the PC and Mac.

While Battlefield 3 was the main focus from EA at Gamerscom, EA and Bioware revealed some info regarding its other games currently in development.
The FIFA Street series is returning with a new game currently in development by EA Canada having a stronger focus on tricks and a few gameplay features from the regular FIFA series. A modified version of the upcoming FIFA 12 engine is being used to improve the passing and dribbling for the game. Also revealed was at least 35 locations to choose from, a 5v5 mode, and a 6v6 mode.
Bioware revealed Dragon Age Legends is variable now for Google+ and the upcoming Warhammer Wrath of Heroes will be getting the Free-To-Play treatment on PC.
New info on SSX reveals the Xbox 360 version will have a heavy emphasis on online gameplay with Ridernet tied heavily into the mode similar to the recent Need For Speed Hot Pursiut using the autolog for friends lists and online modes.
There are some other nifty new features as well. The multiplayer modes have two main parts: Explore and Global Events. In Explore, players can drop into sweet mountain ranges built by NASA date and Google Earth, and each time a personal best is made the game uploads a ghost of that run for friends to see. Players can also win mad cash and move up the leader board by taking down friends' ghosts, or if their ghost is good enough players can even win while away from their consoles. The Global Events mode can handle up to 100,000 live players at once with fully customizable events to go head-to-head against people from around in real-time.
FIFA Street was revealed to have an early 2012 release date for PS3 and Xbox 360, Wrath of Heroes is currently starting its beta testing phase, and SSX is still on track for an early 2012 release on Xbox 360 and PS3.

Kotaku's hands-on demo and impressions with the Lollipop Chainsaw game at Gamescom reveals some new gameplay details and info with the majority occurring in the school section of the game.
Overall impression shows the game being a comedic and cheerful take on the zombie-based genre with the cell-shading and art style being a huge reason.
The game start with the main character named Juliet Starling having her birthday occur on the same day as a zombie outbreak at school. Her main stockpile of weapons include the choice between using her legs to attack, pom-poms, and a chainsaw.
Gameplay-wise, the game is full of comic style gore with zombies exploding into colorful glitter when killed and dialogue containing insults given to the player and to zombies.
The game also has quests to help save classmates who haven't turned into zombies with different rewards and outcomes. The only main ally revealed from the start is her boyfriend's head attached to the chainsaw that gives out clues and tips.
Juliet has a few allies at San Romero. Her boyfriend, Nick, is always by her side. He's the disembodied head that Juliet hangs on her hip. He's capable of helping Juliet in still unexplained ways. The game's loading screen teased an action called "Nick's Roulette," which requires a "Nick Ticket" to employ apparently, but reps for the developer didn't go into detail on Nick's role in the game.
Lollipop Chainsaw's heroine can also choose to save her fellow classmates—the ones that haven't been turned into zombies yet—for various rewards. Save a student from a zombie attack and they may shower her with coins and stars. The former collectible was not detailed during our demo, but the game's stars are used to fill up Juliet's Star Meter, which powers a devastating, candy colored super attack.
Boss fights reveal how the zombie outbreak started and occured with each boss having a specific role in the story.
The game is still schedule for a TBA date in 2012 on PS3 and Xbox 360.

The game is set to mesh the Ridge Racer style with the FlatOut and Burnout gameplay style although Namco also announced the reboot would only occur for this game as the next official Ridge Racer game will revert back to the traditional style.
2) At Gamescom, Blizzard explains their "Titan" project does not have anything to do with anything related to the Starcraft series and is not a Starcraft MMO as rumors have stated. Their current priority for Starcraft II is to work on the expansion packs although a MMO project could start once all their current projects are done.
3) Chris Lewis, one of the Vice Presidents from Microsoft, hints Microsoft will continue support of the Xbox 360 once the next Xbox console is released similar to rumors of Nintendo doing the same with the Wii and Sony with their systems. He also admitted the company learned from the mistake of killing off the original Xbox too quickly while revealing Kinect would become the main reason for the continued support.

Ubisoft shows off new gameplay details and footage with the emphasis on the new changes in appearance resulting in a lack of clutter on the screen or HUD in comparison with recent games in the Ghost Recon series and the previous demo shown at E3 this year.
Gone were the screen-filling, often distracting augmented reality icons that both helped set the upcoming third-person shooter apart from others of its ilk and make it a bit of an eyesore.
Ubisoft also made several changes to the game since E3 with the targeting halo giving out certain information to the player being removed or redone as a different aspect of the gameplay. The development team did state that most of the obvious changes were done for aesthetic reasons and not a complete reworking of the interface of the game.
Roman Campos Oriola, lead game designer, confirmed that following E3 the team decided to tone down the augmented visuals of the game. They did it partly because they felt the abundance of information was cutting down on how players went through the game and partly because they seemed to recognize that the game was a bit cluttered.
Gameplay-wise, all the choices and decision-making shown at E3 and earlier announcements are still in the game but with less initial on-screen markers for both enemy targets and objectives except for those done specifically by the player.
All the text and the targeting halo shown in the image were removed based on the gameplay impressions from Kotaku.

Sony's official response was the feature never was implemented in the operaing system for the PS3 and the problems with how RAM works on the system but did announce the Vita will have some form of cross-chat.
2) Gamestop announces they are in the process of creating a streaming/digital service for console and PC games with the intial testing and beta occuring before the end of the year. The service would be cloud-based and is in co-development with their recently purchased Spawn Labs company.
3) EA and Bioware announce their MMO Star Wars Old Republic game will intentonally have low shipments and copies avaliable at release as a way to prevent the servers from overloading with too many people trying to access the game at once. The plan will also affect digital copies as both companies will restrict the amount of users who can activate the game regardless of when the game was bought until they are convinced the servers can handle full-loads.

EA and Bioware reveal Dragon Age III will be created by using the "best parts" of Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age II instead of being a purely new game.
Bioware is using fan feedback for the current project along with stuff that upset fans with the previous games as the main priority in developing the new game.
Bioware also stated gameplay features and stuff that were disliked by fans of the games would be scrapped from Dragon Age III with the focus making the game being the best in the series. The exact features being scrapped or meshed together was not revealed during the interview though.
Dr. Ray made an attempt to assuage the fears of any players who may have been alienated by Dragon Age 2 by explaining that BioWare's current plan is to combine the best pieces of both previous titles into one drastically improved sequel.
“What we need to do as developers is take that feedback from both sets of fans to heart and see about marrying that in future games in the Dragon Age franchise. I think that the team has actually got a great plan. I think the team is going to have some things that are going to surprise both sets of fans, both core fans and new fans with a marriage of these… the best from both games, Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age 2. And we look forward more to talking about that in the future.”
The studio also felt a lot of the negatives fans had with Dragon Age II and Origins were the result of over-hyped expectations than parts of the game actually being bad but they will still make the changes needed.

Quick News Round-Up:
1) The creative director of Airtight Games, Kim Swift, reveals the company will officially debut her first project with the company weekend at the PAX convention. She was one of the co-creators of the Portal series along with help working on the Left for Dead series before leaving Valve at the end of 2009.
2) According to recent rumors from the Official Xbox Magazine, Fable IV is set to be released in 2013 and will go back to traditional controls and will not be using Kinect like the current spin-off project. Gearbox Software is also rumored to be rebooting the Duke Nukem franchise after the remake of Duke Nukem 3D is released later this year.
3) Nintendo announces Metroid II and Super Mario Land 2 from the original Gameboy will arrive on the 3DS Virtual Console before the end of this year. These games will not be part of the Ambassador program as Nintendo previously announced only NES and Game Boy Advance games would be selected for the program.
Could that mean a different look and voice for Duke?

Nintendo announces it has a huge surprise ready to be revealed two days before a little bit before the Tokyo Game Show starts on September 15 with the main focus being on what the company is calling an "Extremely Big Title."
Currently Nintendo is holding a 3DS focused event on September 13 but did not reveal if the big announcement is specifically for a 3DS game. Last time Nintendo held a pre-TGS event, it was for the confirmation of the debut of the 3DS. In terms of games, Nintendo traditionally doesn't show off mega-titles at TGS and prefers to use E3 for those debuts.
The news was strong enough to cause a big enough spike to occur in Nintendo related stocks with the impressions from investors that the news will be something huge.
Rumors for the actual game involve either a Pokemon type MMO or at least the previously hinted Monster Hunter game Capcom said they wanted to make for the 3DS.

Quick News Round-Up:
1) John Carmack from id Software confirms the upcomming Doom 4 will run at the standard 30 frames per second for multiplayer but the studio is pushing the single player campaign to run at 60 fps. The decision was done to increase the action in the single player with more effects and monsters possible instead of just a uniform 30 fps for both modes similar to most games in the shooter genre.
2) Namco Bandi announces Dark Souls will not have any DLC content or "expansion" style packs as the studio is focusing on making the gameplay last around 50-60 hours on its own. The company also revealed the main reason was due to the sheer size of the game being 3 times larger than Demon Souls meant the game itself had enough content to offset the need for extra DLC or stuff cut like in other games.
3) Sonic CD set to arrive on Xbox Live Arcade after Major Nelson leaked in his official blog all the titles set to be shown at upcomming events later this year.

The rumour as posted on the Escapist mentions no 3D or a 2D focus and a second analogue stick.
So yeah, maybe they've figured out that the gimmick is a bad idea. Don't know how they're working a second analogue stick into things, though. That either means a bigger handheld or a crowded scenario.
Even without the 3D, it's still an upgraded DS, and that has some benefit.
The problem will be games. Kind of like it already is.

I'm really not, Zach. Behind the janky, Dreamcast-era controls lies so much charm. In the sandbox sections, everyone has a schedule to follow bringing the town to life and as you drive along, your character talks to his split personality about 80's movies. It's so delightfully odd, but not in the overt Suda sort of way like No More Heroes, just in the characters. The raincoat killer can't see and you have to hold your breath and every clue you find leads to a cutscene.
I wont spoil it for anyone, but the scene before the final boss is amazing and probably the most emotional one I've seen. It is easily my favourite game this generation. I just totally love it.

EA's Origin digital service contains spyware-like elements after some "digging" in the EULA service terms reveals EA is requiring all users to consent to any data EA wants and EA will be selling the data to third party companies.
The terms include a clause automatically triggering consent to be given once the Origin application is installed and unlike other digital services, the stuff EA is requesting includes non-Origin related information.
While Valve usually informs users what info the company asks for part of its annual status report such as O.S. used and games played, EA's service doesn't specify exactly what will be searched but does state the entire computer of a user will be searched for info.
The terms also hint the only way to opt-out is to completely uninstall the service and lose out on access to any Origin-only or games bought on the service.
Once again reminding us all that we really ought to be reading these terms of service that we so often blindly agree to, intrepid users of Origin have discovered within EA's End User License Agreement for the service that, by installing the software on the system and using it, you are giving EA full license to track a number of different things on your computer, including, but not limited to personal information, computer information, application usage, software, software usage, and peripheral hardware usage. The reason for all of this is for the usual "marketing purposes" and "to improve our products and services" nonsense, but the EULA also states that EA will happily sell your information to any third parties it sees fit.
It's fair to point out that Valve's Steam service also does some of the things listed here when you use it. However, the trick is that Steam allows users to opt out of any and all such practices. Origin has no such opt-out feature, and in fact states that you cannot use the service at all unless you agree to their terms.

Turn 10 announced there will not be any Porsche brand cars in Forza 4 even though Forza 3 was allowed to use the models without the brand name due to EA refusing to allow the studio any access to the brand including models.
Turn 10 had originally planned to use up to 35 cars out of the game's total roster to be from the Porsche brand in the upcoming Forza 4.
According to the car maker, EA owns the digital rights to the brand and can create sub-agreements to license out the brand but it appears EA is refusing any video game to use Porsche as a way to both strengthen their own series of racing games and provide a boost to their non-Need for Speed racing game series such as their Shift series.
But this time around, no dice. "In the end, however, EA couldn't see their way towards collaborating again," said Dan Greenawalt, Turn 10 Creative Director
"We've asked our contacts at EA to reconsider their position frequently and regularly over the last 18 months," he added. "We also reached out to various influential people in gaming to lobby on our behalf, and on your behalf, but that was to no avail."
As Greenawalt explained, Turn 10 has the exclusive right to Ferraris on the Xbox and PC, but works with other companies as not to prevent players from being able to drive the cars.
EA tried to get Turn 10 to allow them complete access to the Ferrari brand owned by Turn 10 for their Need for Speed series but the studio rejected the requests from EA after realizing EA was unwilling to return the favor with the Porsche brand. EA had tried to get access to the brand for Need for Speed Hot Pursuit but were unable to get an agreement in time nor does it look any likely an agreement will be reached for their upcoming Need for Speed game either.
As of now both companies appear to be closer to ending their friendly agreement with each other with EA being viewed as the main reason for the potential split.

The company did state no handheld version will be done neither will it be arriving on WiiWare due to size of the game's file.
2) Star Wars Kinect game and the special edition Xbox 360 has been delayed indefinitely according to Microsoft with the main issue being the game needs a lot more time for development and fixing. The game was originally set to be released this winter but problems during development forced LucasArts to inform Microsoft the need to delay the title.
3) Uber Entertainment announces the sequel to Monday Night Combat being titled as Super Monday Night Combat will be getting the free-to-play treatment on the PC with only microtransactions costing money. It not really being Gates' call anymore aside, Americans never know when to pull out.
Was Catherine marketed like, at all? I saw a bit of hype on game sites, but no real ads. And since I don't get cable anymore, I'd obviously miss TV spots.
The answer is no. And I work at a GS. Aside from our in store hype machine that consisted of a few delicious posters for Catherine, and a segment on the big TV talking up the game (all in store, mind you), and our crew being a bunch of geeks who dig this type of title... no.

Airtight Games debuts the first game at PAX from Kim Swift, co-creator of Portal and worked on left 4 Dead series, being titled as Quantum Conundrum.
The new title certainly seems to draw a bit of influence from Swift's Portal days, albeit with a new, original art style and an all-new tool: a glove that allows you to shift into multiple different dimensions to solve puzzles contained in each level. The game puts you in the role of a youngster sent off to spend some time with their crazy inventor uncle, Professor Fitz Quadwrangle. Unsurprisingly, your visit is interrupted by something going terribly wrong, and you're forced to navigate his labyrinthine mansion using the glove and its dimension-shifting capabilities.
Each dimension affects how the gameplay of a puzzle works with the one shown in the demo changing the gravity to be 10 times lighter than normal as an extra twist for solving the puzzle.
Square-Enix was announced to be the publisher of the game with a release date expected around early 2012 for PC, PSN, and Xbox Live Arcade.

EA also clarified and revised what information they would be searching for and now is mostly related to data used for Origin.
3) According to the new voice actor for the upcoming Silent Hill 2 HD remake, the main reason new voice actors were hired was due to the original voice actor for the James character demanded both extra royalties to be applied since the release of the original SH 2 game to go along with extra royalties to produce the new lines in the remake.

Part of the digital distribution model was supposed to be price, something they really aren't living up to. Yes yes, Steam has sales, not the point. If you think physical media is archaic, you more or less deserve the original Origin terms anyway, since you have traded in your rights of ownership and control for convenience.
You get what you deserve, and a push to digital distribution has led to a loss of control and put fans essentially at the mercy of the developers and distributors to an unprecedented level.
And of course EA did it themselves. That's a fucking retarded point to make, Funk. Nobody would attest otherwise. But then, that changes nothing, especially if Origin is to be made compulsory. Fanboys will not give up Battlefield 3, especially the legions who have built it up as a MW3 killer in their minds.
Fuck, if the past is any sort of indicator, most of the people screaming boycott will buy anyway.
Which is one of the reasons gaming media will become increasingly more restrictive. Along with apologetics like yours.

Based on a potential leak, Epic Mickey 2 is currently in development after a reader on Destructoid found images and info relating to a potential Epic Mickey project.
From the images leaked, it appears Epic Mickey 2 might include co-op with the 2nd player controlling Oswald and will no longer be a Wii exclusive based on the leaked description involving the potential project.
These materials also say that there will be a focus on split-screen two player co-op, with Player One taking control of Mickey Mouse and Player Two taking control of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Mickey will carry the same paint brush and paint thinner that he did the first time around, which can be used to alter the game world, while Oswald will have the ability to fly around like a helicopter and use electricity to fight off or befriend foes/solve puzzles.
The rumor also points out that Warren Spector and the developer studio of the first game, Junction Point Studios, might not be involved with the sequel. Warren Spector confirmed weeks ago his next project is related to making a Duck Tales comic book and potential game.

Right, but almost every game also needs that too, even if it's once every 3 months like EA's games and games that use Steamworks, or UbiSoft's approach that needs a constant internet connection. Some even need a constant online connection and the CD in the drive, which is just god awful.

Wow, you're really reaching to make excuses. That's not "almost every game." And are we really bringing up Ubisoft's DRM even as they're removing it from the latest entry?

Excuses for what? I'm saying that PC gaming is bullshit no matter how you buy your games. Of the games that are coming out in September and the DRM is known about that are getting physical media releases, 3 are Steamworks, so need to be connected at least once every 3 months, F1 2011 requires an internet connection or won't save, FIFA and Tiger both need online (and the EA games that I've had in Need For Speed Hot Pursuit and Shift both required internet to activate CD keys that wouldn't save without them but only a one off) and Ubi's games in Trackmania 2 and Driver both still need an internet connection on every single launch.
That leaves Cell:Emergence and the Game of Thrones game if they both make it into September that are only unknown about requiring an internet connection. I've pretty much got most games installed twice, one cracked and one as is for online play.

343 Studio reveals at PAX and this year's Halo Fest the next trilogy for the Halo series (Halo 4-7) will be titled as the "Reclaimer Trilogy" and will involve Master Chief based on one of his nicknames from the original game.
According to the Halo Wiki, the "Reclaimer" nickname was one of Master Chief's nicknames in the original Halo game and could hint in him being heavily in the next storyline.
"An individual who, whether by chance or by precedent, has been placed in charge of activating a Halo super-weapon. It has also been demonstrated that it is the role of a Reclaimer to activate Forerunner technology on installations such as The Ark or the Shield Worlds; it is also true that other, undiscovered Forerunner constructs also require a Reclaimer to operate in some fashion lay scattered across the galaxy. The exact qualifications of a Reclaimer are not entirely clear; however, it appears that only a human or Forerunner can be a Reclaimer."
Previously both Bungie and 343 Studios confirmed both The Covenant storyline was finished and they wouldn't be the enemies in the new trilogy.

Take-Two and recent impressions from the upcoming NBA 2k12 game reveal how the studio is focusing a lot on presentation and the extra modes to ensure the game stays popular even if there is no NBA season this year.
Control and gameplay-wise, this year's version borrows heavily from 2k11 although with more tweaks and updates to both. The biggest addition is a new in-game play-calling system meant to be much faster and smoother.
The commentary system has been redone to include interrupting lines for play calling to both reduce the problem of lines repeating too many times during a game and help give it more of a "real" feeling to a game.
Indeed, VC has actually programmed it now where the commentators will instantly react to a big play on the court, regardless as to whether a line of color commentary has already begun. After nailing a particularly nasty dunk, all three let out a particularly excitable "OOOHHHHH!" followed by a comment on that specific play, right in the middle of one of Kerr's diatribes about my team's performance last season. He then actually resumed that story once they'd finished praising the dunk.
A new mode meant to expand last year's Jordan Challenges now includes about 30 classic teams to create the league's 15 most memorable matches with the focus on ensuring the lineups are accurate and not generic names or numbers.
Also revealed was depending on the classic matchup, the presentation changes to simulate how the game would look from that period of time.
The presentation of the games in this mode changes significantly as well. If you're playing a match-up between '64-'65 Celtics and Lakers, the in-game camera switches to a black-and-white view, with commentary appropriately filtered through the slightly less intelligible technology of the time. Moving up in decades, the visuals will shift to color, albeit with more washed-out visuals. All the appropriate rulesets of a given era are included, so if you're playing back in the '60s, there is no three-point line, for instance.

This and that about fighting game culture:
Fighting game balance, like the quality of a videogame, is one of those things that people desperately want to assess with some quantifiable form of measurement. Just as some gamers turn to Metacritic the second a game is released to find out how much better or worse it is than some other game, some gamers are quick to cite tier lists to prove that a particular fighting game character is "better" than some other fighting game character or that some games are more balanced overall than others.
That's faulty thinking. At best, tiers can give people a general idea of what characters have been statistically most effective amongst professional or near-professional fighting game competitors. Beyond that, they aren't really good for much. If someone wants to figure out how "good" a fighting game character is, they'd be better off looking at how much damage the character in question can withstand, how powerful their moves are, the various uses of specials, supers, and normals, etc. Even that doesn't compare to the very best way to decide which characters are most effective: personal experience.
But back to the point: you tier-worshiping stat huggers need to reevaluate your thinking.
Hugo (U.S. super bottom tier) vs. Chun-Li (U.S. super top tier)
This whole article started as a comment in Dtoid's Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online Edition review, where I said that 3rd Strike is the most balanced game in the Street Fighter series. As you probably guessed, I was using the word "balance" in a much broader sense than tourney-focused fighting game fans would. Personally, I think that's the only way to talk about balance, especially in a review that's written for both fighting game fans and fighting game virgins alike. Generally, balance refers to how much worth each character has in relation to one another. In terms or variety, design, and play style, I think that 3rd Strike has the most balanced cast in the series, which I think applies to everyone, regardless of your level of experience with the series in particular or fighting games in general.
That's my opinion based on personal experience of watching others play the game and playing it myself since it was first released over ten years ago. If someone else has a different opinion than I do (on this or any topic), I'm more than happy to hear about it. That said, when someone's opinion comes from a source other than their own experience (charts, graphs, the opinions of others, etc), I tend to lose interest really fast.
That's why I'm so sad that many in the fighting game community rely on tier charts or tournament results to tell them what to think. Tier lists aren't the results of scientifically gathered data, and tourney results aren't "clean data." There is little to no causality to be determined from tournament results -- there are too many variables involved. Any facts that someone may try to glean from a tourney result or tier chart are bound to be mired and muddied by (amongst other things) the overall psychology and sociology of fighting game culture. That's why character tiers are so often country-specific. Different cultures lead to different approaches towards games, and different approaches towards a fighting game leads to different characters becoming popular, mastered, and "top tier."
Japanese players Kuroda and Hayao using Q (U.S. bottom tier) to beat American players Ricky Ortiz (Ken, U.S. top tier) and Justin Wong (Chun-Li, U.S. super top tier)
Fighting game fans, have you ever noticed how once someone plays really well with one character, that others in the scene either start playing with that character or a one that is thought to be the antidote to that character, especially in high risk and/or heavy punishment games like MvC2 or 3rd Strike? Did you ever think about how the competitive fighting game community consists of a relatively small group of people who only have each other to talk to and learn from? That's the kind of "inbred" culture that leads to characters' becoming "top tier." It happens with almost every fighting game; the smaller and more insulated the particular fighting game community, the greater the discrepancy between the top and bottom tiers.
This kind of thing happens in sports all the time. For a few years in the baseball world (and forgive me if I'm remembering this wrong, because I could really give a crap about baseball), every big league team was focusing on knuckleballs. One big pitcher struck out some amazing hitters with a series of well timed knuckleballs, then all of a sudden, everyone in sports radio and the baseball enthusiasts press was saying "knuckleballs win games," "they should trade their old guy for a quality knuckleballer," and so forth.
Now, does that mean that knuckleballs are suddenly that amazing, that for all those years that professional baseball had existed, no one noticed that knuckleballs were the best until now? Of course not. It's the relationship between culture and practice that caused knuckleballs to gain this inflated sense of worth. Buying into the idea that anything is that amazing usually leads to a self-fulfilling prophecy. If knuckleballs are considered "the best," batters will be more intimidated by a quality knuckleballer and therefore more likely to mess up against a knuckleballer. If everyone thinks that knuckleballs are so effective, then that's what they're going to practice, making the average pitcher much better at knuckleballing in general. If the best players are using knuckleballs most of the time, then the majority of the best pitches that season will be knuckleballs, no questions asked. That all leads to knuckleballs appearing to be intrinsically better than other pitches, which will continue to keep players, coaches, and fans focused on them, further contributing to the culture-wide infatuation with the pitch, and so on.
Yun (U.S. super top tier) vs. Yun (U.S. super top tier), a common match-up in U.S. tourneys
I hope I don't sound like an anti-knuckleball fanboy, because it's not like that at all. Knuckleballs are sometimes the best option for a situation, given a particular pitcher pitted against a particular batter. This is something that every baseball player knows in their rational mind, but for anyone who's ever followed politics, the economy, the entertainment world, or any culture-wide phenomena, rationality often gives out to insecurity, mob mentality, Emperor's New Clothes-style cowardice, and other psychological factors. Eventually, due to new ideas to the world of Major League Baseball introduced by new blood (coaches, hitters, and pitchers), the knuckleball fad will come to an end, followed by a new fad in the pipeline. Last time I spoke to a baseball-loving person, I think I heard that stealing bases is the "new thing" that everyone's talking about. In a couple of years, it will probably be bunts.
Swap the word "knuckleball" for "Chun-Li/Yun" and "baseball" for "American 3rd Strike players," and you'll hopefully have a good idea about why I don't value tiers and other ways to mathematically calculate fighting game balance. The big difference between baseball and 3rd Strike is that the competitive 3rd Strike scene is too small for people to notice that trends and fads fade in and out as rapidly as they do in American baseball. 3rd Strike is one of the least popular Street Fighter games, coming into being just as the arcade scene was dying out. As such, it has arguably the most "inbred" community out of all Street Fighter titles (at least in America). It's different in Japan, where the 3rd Strike community is much more diverse. Sadly, Americans often ignore the Japanese 3rd Strike scene, which is a shame though also quite strange, seeing as a lot of Japanese players are really good (a seen in some of the videos in this post).
Now, I'm not saying that tiers and balance calculations are totally worthless. It's especially important to find out if a fighting game has infinites or other techniques that completely break the game. When some characters possess abilities that can cause them to almost instantly win a match with minimal strategy, I think it's fair to say that the game is beyond "imbalanced" and has entered the realm of "broken." I think 3rd Strike is balanced because it has enough effective universal "normals" (parry, air parry, super jump, overhead, etc.) to allow every character to theoretically deal with anything that comes their way. The only thing that could ever hold a 3rd Strike player back is their level of skill.
I'm also not saying that tiers and other balance calculations couldn't be better. It would be amazing if someone calculated a tier that cross-correlated data collected online regarding specific characters and the level of experience of the player using them, how often they block, how many combos they successfully complete, and so on. That would do a lot to make tiers and balance analysis more scientifically valid, as well as make guys like David Sirlin (who admirably tried, and arguably failed, to re-balance Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo with HD Remix) a lot happier. Sadly, when it comes to Street Fighter in general, I'm sure that those stats would probably only show us what we already know. Regardless of what Street Fighter game you're playing or any other variables (age, level of experience, play style, etc.), I've learned that the average Street Fighter player always chooses Ken, and the always follows the flow chart as closely as possible. I'm guessing that at a least 50% of all my matches in SSF4, 3rd Strike, and SSF2T:HD have been against Ken, who is constantly throwing out Shoryukens. Screw complaining about Yun and Chun in 3rd Strike, let's retire Ken from the Street Fighter series entirely. Dude needs a vacation anyway.
Italian tournament match featuring Sean (U.S. super bottom tier) and Ken (U.S. top tier), with Sean winning the first two out of three rounds, but... God dammit, Ken...
That's the thing, though. It's common knowledge that a smart competitive player doesn't just stick with Ken because he's proven to be so effective for so many players. A smart player avoids that kind of "inbred" thinking. A smart player constantly checks out what gamers from other countries are doing and never strays too from "the lab," always ready to devise new techniques to counter commonly used moves and strategies. A smart player takes tiers for what their worth, as a look at some trends present amongst the top players surveyed from that particular game, but doesn't live by that information. They aren't going to quit using a character that they feel an affinity for just because that character is "low tier," just like a good actor isn't going to turn down a script they relate to just because its subject matter isn't necessarily known to make money, or like a Jujitsu expert isn't going to drop their style just because kick boxers have been winning a lot of matches lately. Like any artist, a real athlete sticks with the tools they feel they understand the most, and spends their time and energy attempting to utilize those tools to the fullest. Competitive fighting game players should be no different.
As for me, I'm more concerned about the analysis of videogames and gamer culture in general. That's why I'm frustrated with gamers who value tiers, balance charts, and the opinions of "experts" more than their own opinions. When gamers, or any group for that matter, fail en masse to think for themselves, it always leads bad things. Cultural leaders are important, but never are they so important that their perspectives are more important than your own.
Don't get me wrong, I have the utmost respect for professional-level gamers, but just because they know a game from a competitive perspective doesn't mean they understand what it will be like for you or I to experience the game. Just because Daigo or Justin Wong (or Jim Sterling) might have said that 3rd Strike is unbalanced or that Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 is too easy (or that you're favorite game only deserves a 4.5), that doesn't mean their opinion is more important than yours. If anything, you might be more quick to discount Justin Wong's opinion, as he can only see the world of Street Fighter through the eyes of Justin Wong. He can't possibly imagine what it's like to experience Street Fighter through the eyes of mere mortals like us. He hasn't been a mere mortal for most of his Street Fighter-playing life, assuming he ever was one at all.
Hugo (U.S. super bottom tier) vs. Chun-Li (U.S. super top tier), again
OK, tl;dr time -- tiers and balance calculations are fun, and they're better than nothing when it comes to providing us with some frame of reference in terms of what various fighting game characters are worth. The downside is, when taken as gospel, tiers and balance calculations can hold back the growth of certain fighting games, 3rd Strike being one of them. If more gamers, professional or otherwise, made fewer decisions based on what they think they know about a fighting game's preexisting tiers, and more from what they they want to to learn about the game by experiencing it for themselves, the world of fighting games would be a better place.
I hope that happens now that 3rd Strike is online. With new blood comes the potential for new ideas and techniques, gameplay concepts unhindered by static patterns of the past. Of course, that may not happen. 3rd Strike going online may go on to prove what we've always known (and what these videos prove), that Hugo is "top tier" and that it's impossible to win with Chun-Li.
Either way, I can't wait to see how the fight for 3rd Strike's future, as well as the future of all fighting games, will unfold. Just remember that it's you, the players, not charts and stats, that will go on to determine how that future unfolds.

No, they're worse because the fighting game community is so small, but so exclusionary that it's getting harder and harder to enjoy legit good games online because the masses refuse to branch out, learn anything new or accept that certain characters/games are well balanced (ie refusing to accept that they simply suck with said character/game). We're living in the new golden age of fighting games, but I can see the market dying off again in the next 5 - 10 years, simply because of how the community is, not because of developer dickery (the fans didn't kill Guitar Hero, for example).
There are dickhole gamers wherever you go, but none as bad as in the fighting game community.

A class action lawsuit has been filed against Take-Two involving alleged reports of the company mistreating their Quality Assurance testers with the biggest complaint being the lack of compensation for work done.
The lawsuit also claims the company paid lower than minimum wage while "forcing" the testers to work extra hours without compensating for the extra hours or lost break time. Also alleged is the company refusing to pay all the money that was owed for the contracted work before termination of the testers between a period of November 2006 and April 2007.
As of now the courts are waiting to determine if enough people were involved in the dispute in order to officially hear the case as a class action lawsuit with an early court date of March 2012.
We all know quality assurance testers have one of the toughest jobs around but the lawsuit alleges that Take Two Interactive made testers’ jobs more difficult by: "not receiving at least minimum wage for compensation." Testers were also denied [providing] required meal and rest breaks, and Take Two Interactive failed to provide compensation when those breaks were missed.
