It's not about upgrading your existing box, it's about a whole new hardware box, so it will be an XBox One.Two or something. Runs all the XB1 games as normal, possibly at a higher setting depending on what the developers do. They've compared it to the phone/iPad model where there will be new hardware every 2 years but if you don't want to upgrade, that's fine. Games will still run on your old box.It's something that seems sensible in theory but I cant see the console paradigm changing.

People upgrade their phone/tablets because they get sluggish, the battery goes, or because things move forward in a couple of years, or you drop it enough times, etc. Progress is fast and you use it all the time.

I think the model for the console will be stuck with the home appliance concept. You're not going to drop your console, and its not using cutting edge miniturised technlogy.

I don't think it's technology holding games back now. If anything game budgets are spiraling out of manageable control, these games have gigabytes of RAM to work with now, but are we seeing stuff that does something not possible on last gen, beyond graphics? Shadow of Mordor's nemesis system, which you could have optimised for less RAM if you were clever about it.

The backwards compatibility is a weird thing too. Demonstrably only a small percentage of gamers actually use it. Spencer said you can do it on the PC, but oftentimes this requires third party patches. You aren't playing Doom in a dos prompt. So he offers a future of backwards compatibility but currently they just give away 360 games as bonuses left and right. Old games are largely devalued. Maybe future Xbox games won't be coded to the metal, but then are they promising ultimately that they will still run on a machine in 2026? 2036? Can they really make that promise?

For compatibility, they've said that it would be for games throughout the generation, not into infinity. It's a hail mary because XBox has always been to get MS in the living room and that's not as appealing as it once was, so now it's another trojan horse for Windows 10. Theoretically, XB1 going forward will work with any universal windows app from the store within the spec and I honestly think thats the only way the XBox team could get support within MS.

The idea of them having a Windows 10 PC under a lot of TVs is probably appealing, then have the most powerful hardware console available on top. I'm betting that if there is another XBox next generation, it'll be a pure Windows box with controller support built in.

I completely see why the idea sounds good, but I don't know if it would work, or if MS have the gumption to do it. Console gaming is still a market that's hyper sensitive to price.

The other issue though is that they'd have to make the game functionally the same, but only with some marginal upgrades for a two year hardware cycle. Then you're shelling out several hundred pounds so you maybe get the game at 30fps rather than 25

They could do something with a Windows box, but they can't do shit

Activision aren't there every year anyway. They get a console manufacturer to show off COD and then they have little to show.

Ubisoft aren't going anywhere. They're not small enough to not want a platform to show their stuff and they're not big enough to do their own thing. Out of the presentations, we'll only lose EA from the ones there every year and from the additions last year, Bethesda are back.

Not sure about SquareEnix yet. Depends how much they have to show this year since most things they had shown will be out, especially on the western side.

Allow me to make an inflammatory Xbox remarks in light of this:

1. Xbox Done
2. I guess I'll have to rebuy the controller every year, since stick drift is still a problem, so I might as well upgrade my console while I'm at it
3. All the One owners have already declared <strike>sour grapes</strike> that resolution doesn't matter, so 0% of them will be interested in hardware upgrades

That is all.

Anyway, I have a strange feeling after this. I think in a years' time things will look pretty different. I wonder if they just physically have a load of Ones that they need to sell before they get out.

This is what I asked before about this iPhone release style: Just like iPhone you don't actually need the latest hardware. All I needed to hear was the games would work. That is literally the most important thing here.

So why are you silly enough to actually purchase on their release schedule? Do you do that with your smart phone (seriously asking)?

Because the 360 had shitty, shitty stick drift.

When I first got a 360, the second controller I bought had stick drift. I took it back to the shop. The replacement also had stick drift out of the box. Queue plenty of others developing stick drift over the years.

I won a Gears 3 360 in a competition with 2 of the controllers with the twisty d-pad. Both had stick drift within a few months.

They spent $100 million developing the Xbox One controller. They use the same analogue gates so they still have stick drift. Including the Elite controller.

The stick drift drove me absolutely mad on the 360. I had a wired controller that seemed immune to it, but later I learned about slowturn and it had it. The 360 sticks were less reliable than the N64 stick.

So my joke was I might as well buy a new console if I'm buying new controllers so often.

I never much issues with the stick but if that's your experience I can't invalidate that.

But not a great deal has made me regret going with the One. It's biggest flaw is being victim to Sony's studio poaching and being under a parent company that doesn't care about gaming at all.

MS soured stuff itself with its move away from XNA, and how they treated the indies. They went through almost the same hubris Sony did with the PS3, except worse. By the time the One was coming out, Sony had learned their lesson and MS were ready to make their own massive mistakes.

I don't think the sticks would have been a problem if you played Halo. Halo seemed to have a small deadzone in mind to allow for it. The games I would use to test a new controller were either Bioshock or Mass Effect. Looking at Shepard constantly crawling to the right.

I have always been close to getting a One, my brother has one, but the controller stick thing was unforgivable to me. I've owned pretty much any console you care to mention, and I've never had anything like the stick problems I had on 360, straight out of the box often. To hear they spent $100 million researching a new pad, which amounted to putting an actual D-Pad on it, and yet keeping the same dodgy analogue system prone to breaking, fuck it.

I was thinking last night about the possibility that, if MS are indeed closing up the Xbox One... We really need to know what the NX is, and even then it could be a weird hybrid handheld/touchscreen button thing, we would end up with a pretty much unopposed Playstation 4 for years to come. I may just be looking to NX as well. My wife and son LOVE Mario anything and Nintendo as a whole. I've been needing to get my Zelda fix and Metroid too (where you at VC Metroids). Recent news of bringing SNES titles to the VC are really pushing me towards buying a Nintendo console for the first time in over a decade (excluding my son's 3ds)

I'm a Nintendo kid anyway. I'm most curious as to whether the NX will be compatible with the Wii U - if that means it has to have enough in common with the Wii U, or if they're going in a very different direction.

I thought that maybe it would just connect to the gamepad, but then that would leave a load of half useless Wii U consoles lying around.

There's been several major dramatic shifts in Xbox in the last week. It's not coming as a surprise to anyone. It's not certain yet, but there's a very clear direction.

But apparently I have to talk about ACTIONABLES on your copy of Killer Instinct? No, nothing in the news stops you playing Killer Instinct. Unless they turn off the servers. They did just cancel that Fable game, which they'd pledged to support for 5 years, so... Maybe?

The important thing in all of this, I've learned, is Kalyx Triad. I mean, there's been hundreds of people fired yesterday, but the main thing is his console still boots. Something for the analysts to think about. The real ones, not faux ones.

It seems like MS is going all in on Hololens, which will be able to make use of a lot of game development skills, but have corporate applications.

Now that we've reassured Kalyx that his One will still boot, I brought up the NX because it's an unknown quantity. The Wii U did quite modestly, and the NX could do the same. Is there anyone else out there that would start putting out hardware similar to the Playstation? Is it the end of the linear progression of consoles?

I just can't wait to see what the NX is.

I am definitely intrigued by NX. RIGHT NOW, I cannot imagine another contender entering the market. It would basically come down to something similar to Steam boxes yea?

I dunno, everyone doubted MS with the launch of the first Xbox (not to be confused with One ;)) and they did exceptionally well with the 360. Feel like they are, as you stated, abandoning ship, so to speak.

What if, because of that, lag differential exists between the two systems and players screens and creates an (unintentional) competitive advantage?

Can't wait to pick up some Nintendo Selects on Friday...

Question for any other Wii U owners. My hard drive is getting full. How decently does the console function with games loaded on an external drive connected? I wanna grab Tropical Freeze but don't think I have enough room now. If I have a dedicated 3TB drive attached to my console at all times, will that functionally be no different from something loaded directly on the machine's HDD? I assume there may be additional load times associated with it.. idk

USB hard drive seems faster. I actually picked up one of those ones that isn't externally powered, but bought a USB Y cable (so takes up 2 Wii U USB ports) and it's worked fantastic.

The internal memory they used in the Wii U is slow as shit.

Nice. I have two WD externals (a 4 TB and a 3 TB) that I use for movies/TV... can consolidate all that onto the 4TB and use the 3TB for my Wii U, should be plenty of room for anything I can ever imagine putting on there

I own at least 90% of Nintendo published Wii U games digitally, plus some more from the launch when other companies were actually supporting it and I'm not filled up a 500GB yet. You should be golden.

I wish more of my titles were digital. I do most of my Wii U playing in bed using Off-TV play, and swapping discs is a chore. Is there an option to get a digital download of games you already have the physical copy for? I'd probably play a lot more Mario Maker in that case :o

Yeah, I bought a cheap Y cable and plugged in an external drive. You could maybe get away with a single connection, but they recommend two just to be sure that the drive is getting enough juice.

There's no negative impact to running stuff off the drive. As Hasney said I think it might actually be faster depending. For a while I was using just a Sandisk USB stick. You can do that as well but people get terrified.

Nintendo games seem to be tiny. SM3DW is like 2GB or something.

I do wish I'd got more stuff digitally. I don't fully trust it yet, but I am somewhat done with the big stack of game cases you end up with. I generally buy digital now. It just sticks in my craw when it's still £49.99 vs £10 for a used disc copy sometimes.

I've never heard of using a Y cable for USB. I routinely stream to my HTPC using Plex from my externals using just standard single connections and as far as I know have not experienced any negative effects.. I'll read into that.

The lack of resale value and such is definitely the main drawback to going fully digital. I'm generally okay with that though, EB Games (Canadian GameStop) gives awful trade-in value anyway

I think the USB ports on the Wii U are lower voltage than most other things.

I stopped selling stuff a year ago and it actually made me spend less on games. Life's funny like that.

That makes sense, Nintendo isn't exactly bleeding edge with their hardware.

I've never been much for selling games in general. Probably a bit of a hoarder mentality. I still play a bunch of GBA games here and there, I like having something of a collection. I generally do prefer a digital collection though mainly for the convenience and accessibility of it all

I used to trade in a lot until 2004 when I started selling stuff on amazon. It actually played into my anxiety a lot over the years and I would repeatedly sell stuff and then pick it up again.

There's a part of me that doesn't trust digital but that's quickly dying. The only problem is that you get the weird prices. In the US it's usually $60/$60 on release, but here a physical release on amazon will normally be £30-40, and a digital game will be £40-£60. If it was equal I wouldn't think twice.

I used to trade a lot as well, but man they really rip you off. Reselling like ROgerer said is a much better way to go.

My only issue with digital titles (at least on Xbox One) is that if your internet access is down, you cannot play your game, at least that has been my experience.

I get met with a "Do you own this game or app? Please sign in to verify" or something to that effect.There was a thing on 360 where you could play digital games offline if it was set as your primary Xbox. Otherwise you'd have to connect to authenticate.

Please tell me thats the issue and that they actually don't enforce online checks for all downloaded games.

Yea.... I remember it being a thing on 360.

A quick search shows that I should set my One to "offline mode" under settings in order to achieve this.

Network outages are usually brief at my house (i need a new modem) so I never bothered with it. I would just load up something else.

I think it may be on a per game basis issue. I've had digital games that wouldn't run if Live was down but also have ones that will. It also may be tied to a specific Live service being on/offline at the time though. There are usually still several Live things running even when it is 'down'.

I thought it wad going to be episodic content as opposed to a full game, but they're charging full price for this.

I can't see one mission being worth 60 bucks no matter how much replay value it may have. Will redbox it though, for sure.

That gives you the entire game, so there's at least one mission per month until it's fully out in 2017, which is when the disc comes out.

Can't say I'm very enthusiastic about this new trend in gaming. It's like paying 20 bucks for one slice of pizza and the promise of more slices down the line.

I mean yeah, TECHNICALLY you are getting your moneys worth but it still feels like kind of a gyp.

I don't mind it. It's either buy now and start playing now (and after that last beta, give me a hell yeah) or everyone has to wait until 2017 for the full thing. Now, those that want to dive in early can do and those that want to wait for the full thing can.

Probably works best like this where it's not on store shelves until it's done.

Did a quick Wikipedia check and it seems they only ended up doing a partial shut down. They closed down as a video game developer but kept enough staff around to help Disney's other studios with projects and dealing with licensing out LucasArts properties.

On Twitter, Game accidentally gave away their stock of PSVR and said they were getting in 6,000 with 3,000 of then selling overnight on the 15th (which was unpublicised, only way to find a link was via Twitter). I think it's safe to assume Amazon got around the same with how big they are, then ShopTo and Zavvi less. Pretty much points to a conservative, small launch in October.

MightyApe in New Zealand have confirmed that all orders now are for the second batch and that batch is coming pre Christmas. With PSVR being Amazon's number 1 seller in games for 3 days straight despite selling out the day 1 stock in minutes, hopefully Sony can keep up with demand.

Honestly surprised it's doing so well. Thought that it would only sell a small amount until more people actually got to try it.

I think this is what has everyone in "upgrade mode". It also makes it seem like they want to "compete" with PC in a sense.

If I had to guess, its probably mainly due to their upcoming VR headset since they recently stated about having very strict requirements for the device and devs should probably stick to making party games. Other stuff will benefit as well but priority was probably for VR to help close some of the tech gap while keeping it affordable.

I could see them upgrading to a new model, like the slim, but the 4K stuff can't be right. Maybe it'll just upscale to 4K. Patrick is probably right about the source but I don't buy the 4K speculation at all. That is way beyond a trivial upgrade, if it's even feasible.

They're coming up to the time that they could do a 'slim' edition, and maybe they want to go all in and build in something to help support the PSVR? I don't see that being the best move either, there's no advantage to increasing your hardware cost inherently.

The problem is that APU dies can't fit HBM memory yet nor have the memory controller for it, and the upcoming GPU dies from AMD are slated to use it. The Zen-based APUs that are slated to use HBM will be available next fall based on their time line so that could potentially work.

I think you've nailed it, I've not taken into account the HBM. I wonder if using that in a custom way could allow HBM to be stacked on a an APU, like a special motherboard with a wider APU die or something. Or they try to make this a premium system and actually do have a seperate nano style GPU that's sort of XB1 sized?

Just thinking aloud at the possibilities. Like I said, Klepek has proper journalist chops unlike most people in games media, so if he has multiple sources saying the same things, Sony at least have something in the idea pipline.

Yeah, in my head right now, I'm thinking of a premium PS4 with the hardware for the PSVR breakout box built in, plays 4k blu rays, bigger than the current PS4 and has a dedicated GPU for $5-600. Much like the PSX PS2-based media system; totally optional. All games still run on the regular PS4, but as part of the dev certification, since most PS4 games come out on PC or are Sony made, there's a PS4K mode that runs the game at a higher setting. Maybe one or two exclusive games like the New 3DS, but almost every game is just enhanced by the new hardware.

Sells enough to be worth it, but not enough to replace the PS4 as it stands now.

Hey, and I've got that too! Upgraded the laptop to a 980M and going to upgrade the desktop from a 560ti to Pascal most likely. Going to wait for the higher end Pascal though as the current rumors are pointing the launch Pascal chips to be at best 970 replacements with GDDR5X rather than HBM2.

Since my laptop has a better CPU than my 2500k, might even see how these external graphics cards work out and cosider plugging one of them into the laptop rather than upgrade the desktop.

What do you mean? The XBox story was based on what MS have said, the Sony story is based on sources, wwhich Rog clearly doesn't believe yet. Even if they're both as true as each other, he probably has the same reaction as much of the public. MS played a blinder with the cross netwrork announcement because it forced Sony to say "uhhhhh, it depends per game, but they can ask!". I t was akin to the Sony "This is how you borrow games" video.

This is more Sony letting MS test the waters since they are just briefing people right now, so if both upgrades happen, MS will go first and Sony will adapt

So what do we know about the rumoured PlayStation 4.5? In the wake of last week's post-GDC outing of the hardware by Kotaku, we have independently established that it's real and that Sony's R&D labs have prototype devices, and we also have more than one source referring to it as PlayStation 4K, the name we'll be using for now. And this is where things become slightly strange - because while more GPU power is being offered to developers, realistically it is nowhere near enough to provide native 4K gaming at the same quality level as current 1080p titles. The full extent of the spec is a current focus of enquiry for us, but realistically, it is simply impossible to cram the equivalent of today's top-end PC graphics hardware into a console-sized, mass-market box.

They've got a few options in the article about what it's doing, but only option 1 makes sense if it really is going to play 4k games.

An APU with a higher-end Polaris would push graphics on - a 2x performance boost in GPU power compared to PS4 is achievable in a console form-factor. Possibly more - we really need to see the desktop PC equivalent parts first.

By default, Polaris has support for 4K, HDMI 2.0, HDCP 2.2 and HDR.

Console would not be cheap owing to the size of the processor - conceivably on par with PS4's £359/$399 launch price.

Possibly higher depending on how much Sony pushes the boat out in terms of processor size and memory allocation.

This PS4K could co-exist with a cheaper 'PS4 Slim' based on the older APU, again using 14nm/16nm technology.

The bottom line: In 2017, production technologies on 14/16nm should be more mature, and a significantly more powerful PlayStation could be released. But the pace of technological progress in the PC space isn't as rapid as it is on mobile. It took four dramatic leaps in chip production technology to make the generation leap between PS3 and PS4 possible. By 2017, there will have only been one viable jump in fabrication technology available to console manufacturers, and expectations should be limited. Actual 4K games will be in very short supply.

I don't know what to make of this at all. 4K gaming isn't viable, and there's no point charging loads for something now when they could do it much cheaper in a couple of years, and even then to a relatively small audience of people with 4K.

Yea... definitely seems like something that would be done in a couple years time. Just like DVD players when they first arrived - I remember the average cost was $500-$750 for one, now you can get one for less than $50.

While 4K is great and all, as Rog said, the console 4k market has to be rather small. Most people who are utilizing 4k "gaming" are PC players already and less likely to invest in a console with equal or less power.

Even then, a lot of games don't run at 30fps at 4k on a 980ti.

I think we need to see what these new AMD GPUs do when the desktop parts are out. If they're not at least double the power at every price point, then it's only going to be indie 2D games running at 4k.

I think they've got to be clearly hoping that people sitting there with 4k TVs are thinking "Well, what can I do with this resolution?" because it's only really heavily compressed Netflix and a couple of UHD players right now, or that releasing this will make those on the fence about bothering to get a 4k TV get one. They were half-arsed with 3D (mostly because it was a bollocks tech, but still), they might try and go all in with this. Since Kaz is at the top of all Sony instead of just games now, this could be his trojan horse for 4k. I just don't see how it makes sense any other way.

Very true. I think that is what is forgotten. Everyone has had the "1080p 60FPS" hammered into their brain, they most likely do not understand the jump required to go from 1080p to 4k.

Jeff Gerstman over at Giant Bomb said on a podcast that MS had been planning on doing this iterative design with the 360. Something with Comcast or another cable company that said "Hey, here's your free XBox for doing a 2 year contract with us" and then at the end of the contract "Lock yourself in for another 2 years and we'll take that old 360 from you and here's a 360.2!" or whatever the fuck it would be and the only thing that held them back was IBM not really doing much with PowerPC anymore.

Yeah, think they started hitting retail sometime this year. The Elite had the HDMI at launch. Only remember because Jeff mentioned it in that very same podcast. Other models didn't follow for a little bit.

It's as good as happening, been a lot of LinkedIn leaks from people that make it seem like it must be fairly far into development too.

People are also speculating that it's the reason RDR is being held back on the Xbox One BC program as it's fully working. Might just be a pre order bonus. Rockstar don't do E3, but if they have a marketing deal with MS or Sony, I'd say to expect it there. If not, sometime this year.

Huge lunch of salt time, but a dude posted something and was verified to be someone fairly high up at GameStop and has done threads on other things that have proven to be legit. But if this is true about the PS4K, then it's pretty much what I want out of that system:

Price is currently $399.99 they were discussing a better CPU which would raise the price to $499.99 we were guaranteed the price will be no higher than $499.99 (He mentioned the CPU upgrade quite a bit almost as if they haven't really decided on a final spec could be a pricing issue.) also there is currently no plan for any type of trade in program for current PS4 users but that could change.

They stated that the GPU is twice as powerful as standard PS4 and much faster. They did not say exactly how fast but that is was running at a higher clock speed while being much smaller than the original.

It will have a 4k blu ray player and will upscale games that are not natively 4k.

Also there was talk of some sort of VR lounge for the media player app which is supposed to be getting a substantial upgrade.

It was stated plainly and with no room for interpretation that there are developers that already have development kits for the PS4K and that they are making games that will directly target and take advantage of the higher specs of the PS4K. It was also stated that these games will in fact work for the PS4 but with considerable sacrifices made to performance.

It was also made very clear that current games would not be getting any type of performance upgrades by being played on the system and any benefits to older games would come via patch per game and per developer. When asked if this was going to happen the response was "Its a possibility but doubtful with the exception of a handful of games."
We were also given a list of games that will be available at launch that will directly take advantage of the PS4K where the differences are and I will quote him "Significant."

For the PS4K

Deep Down (Thought this was dead)

I'm not a huge fan of Nintendo mobile... idk. Obviously v good for the company but I hate using touch screen for games. Pokemon Shuffle on mobile is a significantly less enjoyable experience for me relative to the 3DS counterpart.

Will prolly dl it to "kick the tires" on it but I don't foresee myself spending a ton of time with it. Maybe.

I can see myself using Miitomo a lot, just because by doing it it looks like I'll get free and discounted "real" Nintendo games. Like Wario Ware Touched is up there, some VC games and a lot of vouchers for eShop full games. Quite fancy that 20% off Yoshi's Wooly World.

Will it have features similar to StreetPass?

The nice thing about getting a N3DSXL was that I just made a second NNID on my previous 3DS and have it just idle in my room and get constant StreetPasses of myself on my main handheld :D

Don't think it has StreetPass, but it sounds like there's a reward for adding someone face to face.

I keep meaning to do the router hack for 10 streetpasses in one go that are all different people, but I can never be arsed.

Well she kinda fucked up. Really should have made a separate account, then she'd have a case I could agree on (no matter the politics), but it's a really risky era to be talking politics on a platform directly related to your job.

We see this happen the other direction a lot but it works both ways and companies are probably getting tired of it.
