Capcom announces two new features for Darkstalkers Resurrection with one being a gameplay mode and the other for uploading videos.

The first feature is an Online Tournament Mode which allows up to 8 players possible per tournament with a Spectator Mode and the ability to determine the win conditions included.

The other feature is YouTube Match Replay Upload which works the same way as it did in Street Fighter III: Third Strike: Online Edition. Matches can be uploaded from your gamertag to your Youtube account once both are connected to each other.

Producer Tomoaki Ayano also mentioned more features will be revealed soon leading up to its eventual release in early 2013.

Nintendo makes me sad. they have fallen behind since the N64 days in terms of technology. Sure, the Wii had higher sales, etc. But it was a gimmick that wore off after a year or so, and then sales went in the TOILET!

The Wii U seems interesting, but I am still not sold on it. I haven't bought a Nintendo system since N64, but have owned a GC and Wii (gifts). I think Nintendo needs another marquee character to get in league with Mario, Link, Megaman, Samus, etc.

I don't think I can take any more Mario games FFS!

Might have been GiantBomb or somewhere else mention that in terms of third party support, the Wii U ends up being their best ever for a launch.

Although its mostly because the majority of the games are ports and were already good games previously released. In terms of new games, its pretty weak although better than the Wii had.

Either the PS2 or the SNES/Genesis launches were probably the last great launches for any console.

Twitter and the hashtag #1ReasonWhy is currently be used by female employees and others in regards to exposing the level of sexism and other similar issues within the video game industry.

While the majority of the stories being exposed involve women in general, men who have tried to get the issue fixed have also revealed stories involving threats they received from their bosses.

Besides the usual cases of workplace harassment and discrimination, female character design was also revealed to be another sore problem. People were either ridiculed or ignored when they tried to suggest changes to female characters beyond their stereotypical roles and appearances.

Stories involving harassment and groping during conventions were meant to show how this problem is not solely a workplace issue and goes deeper involving the gaming community as a whole.

t's not just women, either. Rock, Paper, Shotgun writer John Walker revealed he gets threats and abuse every time he addresses these issues, "And *I* have a penis."

"Because I'm sexually harassed as a games journalist, and getting it as a games designer compounds the misery," wrote Lillian Cohen-Moore.

"Because conventions, where designers are celebrated, are unsafe places for me. Really. I've been groped," wrote filamena.

Typical with anything involving the internet, trolls and others who don't see sexism as an issue also have voiced their own opinions usually verbally attacking people who have tweeted their personal stories.

Konami confirms Metal Gear Solid 4: 25th Anniversary Edition is PS3 exclusive after New Zealand shop lists it for Xbox 360

Konami has confirmed that Metal Gear Solid 4: 25th Anniversary Edition is indeed a PlayStation 3 exclusive after a New Zealand shop listed it for Xbox 360.

The listing on MightyApe.co.nz is for the game on Microsoft's console, but Konami told Eurogamer this morning this is not correct.

The box art looks like someone's Photosphopped the Xbox 360 logo onto the squatter PS3 Blu-ray image for the game. Oh, and the website itself says the Xbox 360 version is unavailable. "Sorry, this product is not currently available to order," it reads.

“It's a welcome return to the rumour,” a Konami representative told Eurogamer. “But there are no plans to release Metal Gear Solid 4 on Xbox 360.”

Metal Gear Solid 4 25th Anniversary Edition is due out next month for £20. The package includes trophy support but no Metal Gear Online.

Dragon Age III currently rumored to have been delayed till 2014 with the reason due to the decision to make the game only for next gen consoles.

The source of the rumor comes from an update on Linkedin by one of the lead designers for the game which stated plans for the game have been changed as the cause for the new delay.

It also reveals EA will be using their EA Shanghai studio to help out Bioware with the development of the game at least for level design.

A recent Assassin's Creed survey sent by Ubisoft might be teasing or suggesting the next Assassin's Creed game could be getting a new co-op mode or have several characters returning.

According to Game Liberty who claims to have been sent a copy of the survey, several questions dealt with the possibility in regards to Desmond, Connor, and the American setting returning for the next game.

Also teased was the possibility of a new multiplayer co-op mode being added and the potential of the series going in a new direction with Uncharted 3 as the inspiration.

A recent patent discovered from Sony hints the company might be once again considering a "detachable" controller in the future.

The patent was filed in 2011 under the name of "Hybrid Separable Motion Controller" and combines both the PS Move wand and DualShock controller into a single design.

The orbs from the wand would be on top of each piece while the rest of the controller would follow the Dualshock design for both appearance and layout.

A previous patent which had a similar idea in the past involved just a detachable Dualshock controller.

Reading the most batshit insane rumours about E3 reveals of the new consoles. It's shockingly from a reliable source (guy that leaked Kingdom Hearts HD and Castlevania), but bar some things that are obvious, he either has to be smoking crack or Sony/MS are. LET'S TAKE A GANDER AT SOME HIGHLIGHTS

– All three major players are going to play very aggressive hard ball starting in Summer 2013 right before E3. Both Sony and Microsoft are attempting to court in developers to next gen engines in attempt to starve Nintendo and mobile developers. However Nintendo is banking on the argument that the other two jumped too soon to upgrade, with only the top-tier of the triple A studios such as Infinity Ward, Crystal Dynamics, ect only having next-gen level technology with most being stuck on very advanced Unreal Engine 3 level tech.

That one's pretty reasonable. In fact all the Nintendo rumours are pretty by-the-numbers such as new games in Nintendo franchises (YOU'RE SHITTING ME?!) including a 3D Mario in 2013 and 3DS Zelda. Hardware add-ons too.

Full 3D Pokemon for the 3DS is about 2 years away and will have a whole new Pokemon type, the first since Gold/Silver. Also, Nintendo apparently has a big name non-Nintendo exclusive announced next year that will cause "shocks".

NOW LET'S TAKE A TRIP INTO CRAZYTOWN

Sony is near the middle end part of their Project Orbis, their next generation PS4. It will not be called Playstation 4, teams have started to call the final name as Omni. Omni will reflect their new hardware and content delivery philosophy. Omni will be “very capable” of doing modern day graphics compared to a Direct X 11 level of technology like Unreal Engine 4 and Frostbite 2. Compared to Wii U, it is better, but not the biggest leap in the world according to developer friends of mine. The key is the Omniviewer, a thin, lite and slick head mounted autosteroptic display that can track the users head and presents a 360 image view with semi transparent AMOLED screens. This can turn any TV into a 3D TV, as well as add extra augmented reality information outside of the TV screen. One application from an entertainment perspective seeing movies in 2k, 4k or IMAX resolutions as their original size where you have to move your head to look at the full picture being displayed. Can also synch with the Vita. The new controllers whether it’s the Duo-Moves or the Classic DuoShock will have pulse sensors in the grips for biofeedback gameplay. Plans are a Basic Unit with 160 gigs and just the system with controller at $350-$399 and one with the Omniviewer and a pack-in game for $450-$499. Aims are for a September 2013 launch.

I would love to be wrong on this, but come on. Similar power to todays upper mid-range PCs, but with some crazy 360 AMOLED screen that can do IMAX resolutions? For under $500? Krazy Ken Kutaragi doesn't work there anymore to make this believable.

Slightly more believable is them using Gakai for backwards compatability which is like OnLive in terms of streaming games. This would mean that PS1, PS2 and PS3 games would be playable on the device and "any Playstation certified device". That would be pretty nice, internet speeds allowing.

Direct hardware Backwards Compatibility will be available by a $70 – $99 dongle that is plugged into the Omni that contains a PS3 on a chip with Cell to run games.

Could see that too, rather than shoving PS3 hardware into the box again.

Known first party games in development for Playstation Omni are: Next Gen Uncharted, Next Gen Siren, The Bodyguard, Wipeout Omni, Bump In the Night, Killzone 4, Gran Turismo Prologue, Next Gen Media Molecule, Omni Fitness.

If true though, it seems MS have obtained the same dodgy crack as Sony.

– Microsoft is the most vague out of all of them. It’s slated to be the most powerful out of all the next gen consoles about 4 to 6 times more powerful than Wii U and 2 to 3 times more powerful than Playstation Omni. The project has gone through many name iterations and will not be decided on until shortly before it’s E3 unveiling. Microsoft is also running into manufacturing issues and developers not having games done on time so instead of delaying the launch to Summer 2014, they are thinking of “soft launching” it Holiday November 2013 and then have a full blow out in the summer. All units will come with Kinect 2 built in which can track up to four people, all objects in the living room, clothing, face structure and fingers. It can also understand different voices and has its own PPU. In 2014, Microsoft will introduce the “LiveWall”, a omni-projection unit that will allow game environments to be projected nearly 360 degrees around the user. Using Kinect 2, they have two demos of one that is a battlefield RTS and one that is a kung fu game with guys attacking all around. The LiveWall can also project different images on the wall, so people can play different games on different walls. Microsoft is prepared to champion this unit as a cheaper and more effective alternative to wearing a “goofy stupid VR headset” to combat Sony’s Omniviewer while Sony is going to point out the low resolution quality and the lack of privacy. The system is going to be very expensive in the $499 range so Microsoft is planning on using a remolded X-Box Live (Possibly renamed X-Box Life) to offer a Pro (Gold) subscription two or three-year contract to sell the unit at $300 – $399. The final goal with the tech is to shrink the system on a chip down enough so it can be put into tablets, PCs and Smart TVs so that all devices are X-Box ready.

Remember that crazy document that floated around about the wall projection shit? This is fucked up. You could barely have multi-platform games if this all happened what with all the fucked up control and display methods.

It's likely to be all shit, but I really hope it's all shit. Entertaining read none the less.

Namco-Bandai is working with Sakurai to get a fully working demo at E3 for Smash Bros. Sakurai really took to heart the complaints about the single player game and the online game. He is solving this by making the single player very deep this time done by the Tales series people and is planning to have a Network Beta of the game for download the day of Nintendo’s E3 show. This way they can beta test online for about one year before they ship the game.

The future status of the Killer Instinct series is currently in doubt due to US Patent and Trademark Office denying Microsoft's recent attempts to renew the Killer Instinct trademark.

The patent office originally denied the first request on September 17 with an updated filling from November 29 once again denying the trademark.

The official reason given by the patent office was “likelihood of confusion” due to the categories the trademark was filed for conflict with one hold by Fox Television Studios.

The issue is due to one of the categories the trademark falls under called "entertainment services" is the same category tv shows fall under. It turns out Fox owns the trademark for the name from a 2005 filing which trumps the recent filing by Microsoft. The patent office also claimed since games can be based off of tv shows and movies, the trademark by Fox is stronger than Microsoft's.

Valve announces "Big Picture Mode" for Steam officially launches today and to commemorate the occasion, a special sale is occurring now on Steam.

The mode uses a modified version of the Steam interface with the purpose of being a lot more useable and friendly to television screens. The new interface borrows a lot from recent Xbox 360 dashboard designs while also including controller support for menu navigation.

To celebrate the special occasion, Valve has decided to have a special Steam sale with about 11 games on sale and most having a 75% discount.

You know those batshit insane rumors about the new consoles I posted on the previous page? Here's a tester to see if they're real. This was revealed by the same source for the NoA conference today:

– Fire Emblem is projected to show up around January in the US with
the Japanese Blue Special Edition to go on sale with it.

– Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon will come out in February. At the same
time the Black 3DS XL will also come out and there will be a Black 3DS
XL Dark Moon version with the game bundled in.

– Animal Crossing planned as a Spring/Summer Title between March and May.

– Most of the Nintendo 3DS and 3DS XL colors, including 3DS XL
Purple, will be out in America by the end of 2013.

– A few eShop first party @ 3rd party Wii U titles will be announced
for the launch window and a good mix of first and third party for

Nintendo has explained one audience for the Wii Mini in Canada.

There's a consumer out there, there are gamers who have not bought a Wii yet, and there are gamers who have a Wii and want a second one for the cottage, or the chalet, or whatever, who actually don't need the online functionality. In an interview with Game Informer, the general manager from BioWare Edmonton and Montreal studios reveals some new details in regards to Dragon Age III: Inquisition.

According to Aaryn Flynn, the game will be influenced and borrowing several aspects from Bethesda's Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

“You can’t look at a game like Skyrim and not think about how impressive what they’ve accomplished is—or [think] that’s an interesting new direction or that there was something that didn’t work well for them that we could take in a new direction,” Flynn says. “So, we’re always influenced by these games, especially in a relatively tight-knit genre like RPGs.”

One of the things from Skyrim which was teased to be included for Dragon Age III was a larger focus on exploration to fit with the plans to expand the game's world in terms of both size and scope.

“In terms of where I think RPGs are going, I think we have to get back to more exploration in our games,” Flynn notes. “I think that’s not just because of some of the shortcomings in Dragon Age 2, but because there’s a heritage there, something we used to a lot of in games like Baldur’s Gate and Neverwinter Nights, where exploration was one of the key themes. We’ve gotten away from that with Dragon Age and Mass Effect. We want to get back to those themes. Not only because they seem powerful, but they are things that fans want. They want to know more about these worlds we are crafting, and they want to chart their own course through it.”

The game is still teased for a late 2013 release date although was rumored recently to be pushed back till 2014 for next gen consoles.

Splash Damage, the company behind two of my favorite games of all time (Return to Castle Wolfenstein Enemy Territory and Quake Wars) are coming back with a new free to play shooter called "Dirty Bomb".

Their last release, Brink, was pretty dissapointing, so hopefully them returning to the free to play model that made them popular will result in a good game.

I was incredibly stoked about Brink, bought it, played it for about a month and sold it. Highly disappointed. The concept is awesome, but the execution failed.

Gamers are falling into a "CoD Sickness" - meaning if the FPS game you are playing isn't CoD or related, quite a few "gamers" won't even bother :(

I would say Brink was a 6/10 for me, personally. I would like to see a follow up that has been heavily tweaked.... I think it can work.

The co-developer of Far Cry 3, Ubisoft Massive, is currently working on a "Triple A" Online RPG which would be released for the PS4 and next Xbox console.

A LinkedIn profile from an employee at the studio hinted the company is currently in the process of developing an Online RPG for next gen consoles. The update also revealed the company is currently hiring for a Lead Level Designer and multiple studios might be involved in the creation of the game.

The job ad reads: “Massive is looking for an experienced Lead Level Designer to join an international team working on a AAA Online RPG. In this position you will lead a Level Design team in building the best gameplay experiences ever conceived. For any game. Ever.”

Based on previous rumors of Ubisoft planning another reboot for the Prince of Persia series in the future, it is possible this Online RPG could end up being that game or possibly even a future Assassin's Creed game since the studio did help develop last year's Assassin's Creed: Revelations.

According to recent job postings, Rockstar is working on a brand new "cutting-edge" engine which will debut for next-gen platforms.

The company is currently hiring engine programmers with the purpose to develop an engine that can be flexible enough to work on a variety of systems which includes the current gen systems as well.

The job posting is for a “core engine programmer”, someone who will be tasked with working on multiple aspects of engine development, designing and implementing low- and mid-level systems, improving engine architecture and evolving an existing codebase, and diagnosing game performance and stability issues (and, in turn, helping to develop solutions to those problems).

Bordelrands 2 won Best Shooter and Best Multiplayer game while Halo 4 took Best Xbox 360 game.

According to an interview with Kotaku during Spike's VGA show, Valve confirms Big Picture Mode for Steam was the start of their attempt to compete with console makers for the "living room" market.

Gabe Newell mentioned how he believes in the future PC makers will start the push to manufacture PCs who's purpose is just for living room usage with Valve themselves planning on making their own PC hardware. He also believes Steam would end up playing a huge role for these devices especially now that Big Picture Mode is available.

While Valve favors the open system design traditional PCs provide, he did admit that in order to succeed in the living room market these new PCs would have to be closed systems just like consoles.

"Well certainly our hardware will be a very controlled environment, If you want more flexibility, you can always buy a more general purpose PC. For people who want a more turnkey solution, that's what some people are really gonna want for their living room. The nice thing about a PC is a lot of different people can try out different solutions, and customers can find the ones that work best for them."

New rumors in regards to the next Xbox and PS4 as both are rumored to have recently changed their codenames while Microsoft still having problems getting quality chips to be made.

In terms of the next Xbox, Microsoft is rumored to have dropped the "Durango" codename in favor of a “Kryptos” codename. The console would be using an AMD chip called “Oban" but similar to last time, chip production issues have resulted in the majority of the early chip batches to be tossed due to failing reliability and quality inspections. Other details include a potential Fall 2013 release window but could be pushed back to a Spring 2014 window.

In terms of the PS4, the "Orbis" codename was never an actual codename for the PS4 and instead its real name has always been "Thebes." Similar to Microsoft, the PS4 will be using an AMD chip but it won't be the "Oban" chip. Other details include mass production of these chips will not occur until after the next Xbox is released which would mean a Spring/Fall 2014 release window.

According to recent job postings, SuperBot Entertainment could be planning a sequel to Playstation Battle Royale with development to either occur soon or already be in a very early stage of development.

Besides the usual need for programmers and designers, the job postings emphasis the experience needed is for games similar to Playstation Battle Royale.

“Must have a near encyclopedic knowledge of modern games, with emphasis on PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale.”

Adding more fuel to the speculation this new game could be a sequel is from the Art Director's job posting which states the need to be able to explain how characters and environments will work out in this new project.

I have to wait a month to turn off auto-renew because somehow my Xbox account no longer recognizes the laptop I'm using, WTF. Basically I can only turn it off on the day before it auto-charges my card. Just another cheat way to try and get your money basically.

I was on hold for a total of 40 minutes and I spoke to someone for 5 minutes.

He told me how to stop that "loop" situation I had. I need to do something that involves multiple broswers or the privacy setting on the browser or a second device. So unnecessarily convoluted, I'm surprised they didn't ask me to hop on one foot or hold my breath while I did it or something.

Got auto-renew turned off and he switched me to a month fee. That way I get to game online over Christmas and then my gold account is silver afterwards.

UK consumer rights aren't too bad, actually. We get a lot of useful ones. You are entitled to a refund whenever you want it, as long as you still have the thing you bought. You just have to give a reason the item wasn't satisfactory and it doesn't even have to be a big thing. "This burger isn't hot enough" or "This glass is too narrow" would probably work in a resaurant.

I assumed there would a right saying things like managing subscriptions and payments should be as accessible as possible. The fact I needed to phone someone wouldn't have been much help for me if I was deaf or mute, for example. Not very accessible.

That's the same here overall but I was able to return Skyrim for a full refund after removing the wrapping by saying the game required an HD tv for it to be playable but it was never mentioned on the box.

Yeah, we do. I used to work in a call centre 8 years ago and we had specified agents trained to deal with the Relay type system because some of our agents would get frustrated by the delay. I was one of them and I dealt with it about twice.

Oh god I loathed those sorts of calls. Didn't help that the service (Typetalk as it was then) seemed to be staffed by the most unprofessional people ever. Had one agent end their shift midway through the call so decided to fob the call off on someone else. Great service, that.

They get really shitty about you trying to speak to them directly rather than the caller too.

While earlier today THQ revealed some really bad news, Capcom themselves also announce bad news with Resident Evil 6 being blamed the most.

According to a recent press announcement, the company has cut their estimated profits projection for the fiscal by roughly 33% with weak sales of Resident Evil 6 and recent news of Monster Hunter 4 being delayed as the main reasons.

Capcom now estimates that it will take 6.5 billion yen ($77.0 million) in profits during the current fiscal year, down from the original forecast of 9.8 billion yen ($116.1 million), and revenue of 93.5 billion ($1.1 billion), down from 105 billion ($1.2 billion).

Capcom was disappointed how badly Resident Evil 6 sales dropped after its initial launch period to the point of the game falling well short of their estimates.

Monster Hunter 4 for the 3DS which was set to be released in Japan on March 2013 has now been delayed till a later date and no longer is part of Capcom's current fiscal year. The official reason for the delay is to have more time for polish and quality improvement for the game.

If they released MML3, didn't blame us for not doing THEIR job and if they didn't screw up SFxT and didn't cut so much out of games to sell as DLC, maybe I'd care.

Considering this is the second company to have problems announced in one day, I kind of wonder if maybe we're near the crash so many have predicted for the last few years. I'm not saying this is doom for the market, but it's kind of looking like MAKE IT or BREAK IT time for the games industry. EA and Activision aren't having the best times as a company, either. They do have some games that sell awesome, but they've suffered hits in terms of market confidence. Neither are in THQ area, but it's something to look out for.

Personally, I hope these companies start getting their shit together. Maybe Capcom will actually take this as a sign to stop dicking around. Or maybe they'll punch Mega Man fans in the balls again.

I think a big cause is because companies have made the mistake of aiming games more and more towards the CoD/"Hey, Bro!" demographic. Resident Evil 6 being a good example. They are making games more and more alike.
That's not a demographic I see shelling out full price on games over and over again yet more and more games are aimed at them.

Also doesn't help that games are getting more expensive. NSMBU is, on average, £50. NSMB Wii was only £40, if not a little cheaper, when it first released.

So, between the hike in prices and the fact they are make more games with less variation, it's no surprise companies are having a hard time.

Shigesato Itoi stated while he wasn't allowed to give any specific details he did confirm they are not working on Mother 4 but the game will be a re-release of the earlier Mother games (Mother 1-3). Also wasn't allowed to state which platform the game would arrive on or if it even will be released outside of Japan.

Based on a recent survey sent by Capcom, the company is considering the future of several franchises in regards to digital distribution.

According to Christian Svensson, the outcomes will not automatically mean certain games and series will or will not have future digital releases but it will play a big influence when the actual decision is being made.

The survey itself has a series of questions dealing with the games being possible as just straight ports, HD remakes, reboots of series, or even as new games in a serie.

In regards to the Mega Man series, several questions dealt with the idea of possible compilation sets including all the sub-branches in the series. Also on the idea of these games being kept in the classic 2D sprite format (with or without HD upgrades) or redone in a pseudo 3D format (2.5D).

The development costs are to blame as well, IMO. Most AAA titles production is millions of dollars, making it very difficult to even profit. I don't think there will be a crash or anything, but there are some big changes that seem like they need to take place. Not sure what they can do really.

Given the fact that the gaming industry has seen nothing but growth for almost a decade and has been nearing exponential growth, I'm going to say "lol" and move on.

It sounds like one of those stories kids would pass around in a neighbourhood to each other. A creepy monster guy is trying to kill you or something. Is that what it is?

We had something like that. He was called Mr Vain and he was inside out and wanted to catch children.
He lived in the abandoned/crumbling castle on top of the hill near the farm. Yes, I grew up by a farm and castle among other "whimsical" things.

The castle was always lit up at night which added to the idea someone was in there.

And Slenderman was created. The creepiness of it captured people's imagination, and others started posting pics/making up stories. And it took off from there. It's completely internet created.

It's actually fairly fascinating. Great example of collaborative media, and some genuinely creepy stuff has come out of it. If you ever have time, check out the Marble Hornets series on youtube. It's a series of short found footage pieces telling the story of a kid who disappeared while making a movie. Obviously Slenderman is involved. I think the guys who did that are actually writing for the new Slenderman game.

Remedy Entertainment teases they have big plans for 2013 and it might end up being a new Alan Wake game.

The developer wrote on the Alan Wake Facebook page: “The new year starts with good news: Alan Wake Franchise is -75% on Steam. Even greater Remedy news to come in 2013…”

The studio did register for a "Alan Wake 2" domain name last year so its possible the game gets officially announced later this year.

I don't think you understand how this works. The idea is a buyback program. The people holding this are trying to get them off the streets. They are not funding the gaming industry. Anyone buying games specifically to take advantage will be doing so at a loss unless they don't bother with some sort of sliding scale.

Whether the people who take them up do this knowing the games are M rated or not is completely irrelevant and beside the point.

In short, know what you're talking about before you rant or you're no better than these people. The article even mentions how this works, and it's not even one of the better written pieces on the subject.

If you can't be bothered, why should they?

I don't like the redesign of Crash Bandicoot. He looks pretty pudgey. The original design was spot on. There was no need to give him tattoos a few years back or to do this new redesign.

All they need to do is use the original design and make more games like Crash 1,2,3 & WoC. Not because of some fanboy/nostalgia thing but because that's all you really need for a good Crash game and it's all anyone seems to want. None of this Titans stuff or whatever else is needed.

Anyway, people in the commonts on ScrewAttack say it looks like a toy for Skylands because he's on some platform. Never pplayed Skylands so I wouldn't know.

I thought they were fun. They had a simple goal but they were enjoyable. Not as good as Mario 64 but they were different games in more ways than one.

Miiverse shows that players can communicate without drawing penises and swearing so, why not? The Wii U pad would be useful for calling out Pokemon and using your items and communicating with human players.

I think it's maybe to do with the target audience being young children. Most DS or 3DS consoles I see are in the hands of young children on the bus etc and, from what I've seen with my nephew and others, parents buy their young children handhelds sooner than they buy them consoles these days.

Yeah but I think Pokemon is the one that's targetted the most towards children. Which is saying something when you look at Mario.
Ever kid gets a handheld these days, every kid will then buy Pokemon, which comes in two versions.
Less kids at Pokemon loving age are likely to have a home console, not counting their parents 360 or PS3. So releasing a Pokemon for that might not be as profitable.

This is all just guess work, obviously. I just go by what I see.

I'll go with my intuition that an HD somewhat-multiplayer Pokemon on the WiiU would damn there be a Killer App.

Oh yeah, but The Pokemon Company (the artists formally know as Game Freak) don't touch consoles for whatever reason. Probably busy churning out sequels, but yeah, who gives a shit when they're as fantastic as they have been.

Pokemon is more aimed at Japan than children in general though and don't forget, handhelds over there are much bigger deals than consoles. Other than the Vita that is, but that thing is unfortunately bombing everywhere.

3DS just passed 10 million sold in Japan because everyone went fucking crazy for Animal Crossing over there. That's beaten the PS3 life to date sales. Now in 2013, they've got Monster Hunter 4, Dragon Quest and Pokemon coming out amongst others. It's going to explode.

Only numbers that I can find based on Wild World is that it sold 4.7 million copies in Japan by July 2008 (came out in 2005) and as of March 2011, it had sold 11.51 million copies worldwide. Over half the sales probably came from Japan, but it doesn't look like it's a slouch in the sales department in the west either.

The Wii one "only" sold 3.38 million worldwide though.

The numbers don't have direct downloads in them at all. The Media Create ones are all carts only, the Famitsu ones include download codes you can buy in stores. The latest figures show 300k were download codes.

No-one knows how many direct eShop purchases there were. Nintendo won't release it.
