I doubt it's a change of heart out of goodness. I think their micro-transactions model is paying off. I'd expect that in all games going forward to replace the passes/always on. It's probably a better solution, as long as the micro-transactions aren't gameplay altering. Just shortcuts and cosmetic.

I like John Walker but he started this "OOH it's a shit PC" stuff as soon as the PS4 was announced. See how well that comes up as there's less reason that ever to upgrade your PC and there's a mass market systems with far more tightly engineered things. John Carmack has been seeing the benefit of having these new architectures that don't have to jump through the hoops of a desktop system, and Walker just went "Nyeeeah but it's not a PC", to John fucking Carmack.

I wonder where PC gaming is going to go. I think there is going to be a big obstacle with the market of people who can play these new games on their PC is going to plummet.

Torchlight 2 was £5 2 weeks ago, last week Xcom was £10. While Xcom was on sale people offered to trade their Torchlight for Xcom. £5 profit. yet the person who wanted torchlight paid £6 less than the standard Steam price.

One of gaming’s greatest mysteries might soon be uncovered.

You’ve likely heard the tale before: Millions of unsold copies of the disastrous ET: The Extraterrestrial game for the Atari 2600 lie buried in a New Mexico landfill. Despite a slew of believers and evidence (http://www.snopes.com/business/market/atari.asp) supporting the story, doubters remain. But in the next few months, we'll have the answer once and for all.

The Alamogordo City Commission has approved a deal that will allow for the excavation of the landfill (http://www.krqe.com/dpp/news/southeast/alamogordo-approves-atari-excavation) to see what, exactly, is buried there. The big dig will be filmed by Fuel Industries, a Canadian film production company with plans to create a documentary about the gaming legend.

Fuel has access to the landfill for the next six months, which would put it there on the 30th anniversary of the dump. Alamogordo, as you might suspect, is hoping to raise awareness of the town -- and perhaps attract a few tourists to the area.

"I hope more people find out about Alamogordo through this opportunity that we have to unearth the Atari games in the landfill," said Mayor Susie Galea.

The whole project is hinging on the memory of one individual -- Joe Lewandowski -- who ran a garbage company at the time and says he knows exactly where the games are buried.

The dig could be a Geraldo-like failure, of course, but even if Lewandowski does know where the games are buried, they're not likely to be in any playable form. Atari reportedly crushed them before disposing of them.
With good reason, too. E.T. is a game that almost single-handedly killed (http://games.yahoo.com/blogs/plugged-in/fact-fiction-video-game-myths-revealed-624.html) the home video game console business in the 1980s. Atari rushed the development process and bypassed QA to get the game on shelves, resulting in a confusing, buggy title that lacked any viable entertainment qualities.

Multiplatform games aside, Xbone has the games, simple as that.

Of course, multiplat titles are the lion's share of games these days. The prominence of the exclusive has dwindled greatly. Even moreso with Microsodt, who shares its "exclusives" with the PC platform. Titanfall would be an example of that. I can understand if you don't want to invest in PC gaming, but it rings hollow to call that an "exclusive."

Further, while pattern recognition seems to border on a superpower 'round these parts, Microsoft has a tendency to have a strong initial audience then more or less abandon the market except for the bare bones moneymakers. Unless you want Kinect titles, this last generation bears that out. And even with Kinect titles, there wasn't much gold there. Sony has been pretty consistent with returns in the first party category.

Of course, for me, this is purely academic because I don't give a shit about most of the first party games. Titanfall looks as "meh" as anything Sony offered last gen. Dead rising's going to try and clone Call of Duty. Sunset overdrive is another co-op shooter from the guys who managed to turn Overstrike into Fuse. However, if you think Microsoft is going to change its stripes, you just might be a "sucker" after all.

While that is quickly becoming the case, especially with the Bro gamer CoD generation, I dont think removing single player is the smartest thing to do, especially if you're trying to introduce a whole new world like they are with Titan Fall.

Like STD said, it doesn't matter if the story's good. You can have the most brilliant story in the world and it doesn't matter if nobody plays it. As it stands, most people don't really bother with a COD story, and I'm betting about as many will care about COD with mechs.

I was surprised to see as many as half of the players on Steam completed the campaign on Steam in MW2 and 3, since numbers for the Xbox and Playstation are reported to be much lower.

If they're putting that much more effort into multiplayer, I say go for it.

It's interesting how two FPS games are coming out (Titanfall and Wolfenstein) that are catered to completely different crowds. Personally, I prefer a single player experience, and then afterwards I'll play some MP, and if it's a lot of fun, I'll keep playing.

People don't buy COD games for the story, like people don't watch Fast and Furious movies for the story, it's the action and instant thrills. I think there's also the problem that single player FPS games have become increasingly linear and full of QTEs, where people prefer to play how they want and move around the maps how they please.

Half Life games on the other hand, now there's a FPS where you'd be pretty annoyed if they release the next one without any single player.

Personally, I like the diversification. I mean, catering to different audiences is surely a good thing, right? Long as the products don't skimp on their supposed focus.

I'm not likely to buy either of these games, but the point remains, does it not? I'd love to have more options for single-player titles that focus on single-player. I'd also be in favour of more multiplayer only titles if it meant we saw more thought into them.
