I'd figure Rhode Island would say away from anything video games after the Curt Schilling/38 Studios debacle.

Schilling (and a few others) being a dumbass with this debacle ended up killing a really good idea the state had to lure more game developers to the state. They wanted to become a new hub for game developers and tech companies within a few years.

On paper, the idea was to give Schilling whatever he wanted to help make the game become as successful as possible so they can use it as a launching pad to lure more game developers to the state. Think this game alone ate around 60-75% of the state budget for tech projects.

Instead Schilling's studio fibbed on how much money was actually needed and everyone else involved had no backup plan in case things didn't go smoothly with the studio itself or game sales. Not only did Schilling screw the state's plans, he also screwed a lot of other companies who couldn't apply for tech grants because of how much his project ate into the budget.

Forgot how the settlement went down but think I technically own a share of the game's IP via being a resident of the state and the state owning the IP now.

Y'know, I was about to give Trump the benefit of the doubt and look up what he actually said, because if he suggested that there should be an independent ratings body instead of one run by the video game publishers, or maybe that there should be a rating system involving ages like we have in Europe that has laws around banning children from buying the games. Done with Microsoft controllers. As a rule, I always get first party accessories, because as long as I've played games they've always been the sturdiest.

Think I only had to replace one 360 controller in the entire lifecycle of that console. I've had to replace the xbox one controller 3 times now. I'm not rough on them, I don't throw them around, but less than a year after buying them, the LB/RB button sticks. One time it just fell the fuck off.

Gonna take my chances with third party. Since they're cheap I won't feel bad if they break down. But the Microsoft ones too expensive for me to take any chances on them anymore.

No Man's Sky is coming to xbox this summer. They are also launching their next big update for the game, which will be free as always. Last major updates added lots of cool stuff.

Most people guessing the big gimmick for the next update will be true multiplayer.

Divisive game. Even with everything they've added since release, it's not for everybody. Still very grindy, and involves a lot of "making your own fun", so if you like linear experiences with clearly set goals, it still doesn't really have that.

I really liked it though. I love exploring, and playing while listening to a new album or podcast. Good "chill" game.

A good ways into God of War, and I can safely say it has been overhyped by game journalists. It is not the life changing, industry redefining experience they are making it out to be.

BUT, it is not overrated. This is a very, very, VERY good video game. Good enough that I feel confident saying nothing else this year will top it, and it has essentially clinched GOTY.

I mean it's Rockstar, and it's Red Dead. It will be amazing and a sure fire GOTY candidate. But we have been there before. Could see GoW edging it out in part because it's world and characters are so fresh. Surprisingly, not a lot of games out there that explore Norse mythology.

Also, while Rockstar's gameplay always feels really good, it just doesn't have the depth of a game like God of War. All the different things you can do in a fight, as well as the more tactical approach this installment has taken, really make it hard for me to see Red Dead topping it from a gameplay perspective.

That's the other thing. Combat in previous God of War games always felt a bit floaty and weightless. Feels a lot heavier here. Everything move feels like it has weight to it. Even when you pop up and juggle some poor son of a bitch in the air.

Also, this game is a perfect example of why not every god damn video game has to be open world. It gives you lots to explore, while still keeping you focused on a linear path. The extremely well crafted narrative helps with that.

I have so many open world games that I never finished. Not because I didn't enjoy them. I love the far cry games, assassins creed, shadow of war, etc. But their main narrative feels so uninspired and tacked on that I feel no compulsion to complete it before the next shiny new game drops.

GoW gives you just enough to explore and get that sense of wonder with the game world, but pulls you back into the main quest line before it gets tedious.

Brawler is fair, but it's certainly not in the western Hack n Slash family (which is already slightly removed from JP Hack n Slash).

I would absolutely love to explain how my 3rd fave gaming genre works, why it works, and all the little historical nuggets that go with it. But as a TLDR for now:

- Over the shoulder 'behind follow cam' is not conducive to Hack n Slash. There's a reason the perspective is often fixed leading to the genre's trademark stubborn camera angles.
- The 'one player fighting game' input intensity of Hack n Slash is not because it wants to annoy casuals. Hack n Slash, like a fighting game, demands you operate within a rigid yet flexible sandbox of actions in often quick reflexive manners. Lots of fighting game tropes carry over to HnS because of this (frame data, punishes, stretching combos, etc). Modern GoW, while 'presentation wise' intensive, is not actually demanding in this way. It is strategic via effect states and other mechanics that do involve melee per se - but not HnS requirements.
- This is NOT to say this GoW is more casual, there are many types of challenge in games. I am just saying in terms of genre (HnS) and sub-genre (western HnS), this game was obviously not built as a Hack n Slash game. It has almost none of the mechanical tropes related to the genre, and that's fine.

Hell I only noted the distinction in the first place cause it's very urk'ful to me when people make direct comparisons between this and the old GoW. As a series, sure. Game mechanics? That's as jarring as comparing RE7 to the RE4; it's just a different ball game. All I'm sayin.

It's not short. I've put hours and hours into it already. The main quest line is probably about average length. At least I think it is. I haven't even finished it yet. But I don't know if it's possible to just burn through the main story, as enemies get tougher and have their own levels. If you aren't exploring and finding more materials to craft better armor to up your stats, I don't know if you can get past later enemies.

Tons to see and do, including two realms that are purely challenge levels.

I'm actually wondering if they've already planned this to be a new trilogy, because like I said, I've already but in a ton of hours, and they've barely scraped the surface of the Norse Mythology lore.

At this point Bungie needs to scrap everything they're going by and start from scratch if they're even thinking about Destiny 3.

They have to make a true sequel if Destiny 3 is going to succeed. Not another Destiny 1.5

It has to have something that really shakes things up like Sspaceship combat or something.

Beyond that, they need to make it more rewarding to play. Which is something they could still do with Destiny 2. The game actually did a great job of adding more activities to partake in, than the first game. The problem is once you get to the end game (where you're going to spend most of your time) theres no point in doing any of them. You've got a handful of things you can do once a week to get luminous engrams, and then you're done. You're not progressing at all until next week.

Give people a reason to do all this stuff. Give every activity on every planet a unique armor set or weapons with valuable perks. Adventure missions, patrols, lost sectors, fucking all of it. Give your contacts on each planet ornament sets for the special armor and weapons they provide. Do that and add new stuff each season and that's how you get people to stay and keep playing the game.

On paper, that may seem like asking a lot compared to what they've done. But other games that are all about end game grinding take a similar approach. Games like Diablo 3, ESO, and Final Fantasy 14 remain so popular because they're constantly adding more content and making all the activities in their game worth the player's time.

I don't know why Bungie has been unable to produce enough content to keep people playing, but they are going to need to step it the fuck up. The big fall expansion will likely bring some people back, similar to the Taken King, but if the franchise is going to survive, they are going to have to reevaluate everything for Destiny 3. They're going to have to knock it out of the park, and what they're doing now isn't going to cut it.

Yeah that's not happening a lot of people in high positions step down. Even outside of the end game Destiny has an album of baffling decisions that can't possibly have sound good on paper. And they have a habit of developing a fuck ton of useless content; large environments filled with dead space, every piece of gear from white to blue is useless (million ways they could spawn weapon materials), Farm has no exclusive vendor, ships are basically loading screen flair, and some of the most interesting environments are exclusive to campaign whereas they could be a Patrol map (the city of the final stage).

People wonder where the budget went, it went there. All that crap has to be fully modeled and detailed and high def to be seen ONCE ever in some cases. Had they found a way to repurpose assets already in-game they could solve a lot of longevity issues. Imagine a blue chest piece you can Infuse into a purple? That right there would validate tons of gear and allow more visual options for players. Same with guns.

Masterwork cores are needed to re-roll Masterwork gear. How do you get Cores? Masterwork gear drops. Why not have Cores drop themselves for certain activities? Nobody knows. There's something very strange about Bungie's design culture that is reminiscent of somebody or somebodies never being told 'no' or challenged about their ideas.

Activision ended up confirming rumors of the next Call of Duty game having a Battle Royale mode and no single player campaign.

Officially titled Blackout, the mode will drop players into huge maps in typical Last Man Standing gameplay. Blackout will feature weapons and characters taken from the campaigns of the entire Black Ops series. As long as that exploding RC Car is in the mix, I'm happy.

A new trailer was released to introduce the mode, which you can check out below. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 launches on PS4, PC and Xbox One on October 12.

In a bit of eyebrow-raising news, the Korean gaming board has given a rating to a potential Borderlands Remaster for PC/PS4/XB1.

I know we've only recently had a discussion on all the games in the series, but this would include also all the GotY DLCs along with the main game of BL1, and if this proves true, I'd definitely grab it.

I get the feeling that if something does come of this news, we could potentially see a release on or around the 10th anniversary of the game next year or maybe we'll see it included as part of a special pre-order bonus with BL3.

Sega confirmed the rumors of a new Sonic racing game being in development after pretty much giving up on trying to keep it a secret due to the amount of leaks recently.

Sega have cut their losses and decided to officially reveal Team Sonic Racing, which launches this Winter on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC. A new teaser trailer has been uploaded, which you can check out at the foot of the article ...

The product listing - for the Nintendo Switch version of the title - also lists a whole host of features coming to the rubber-burning release. Team Sonic Racing will feature 15 class-based characters from across the Sonic universe, customisation options for your vehicle's appearance and performance and, apparently, a Story Mode.

It also appears that the "Team" element of the game's title will be emphasised, with the game encouraging players to "Race as a team, win as team" before going on to mention Team Specials and Team Ultimate maneuvers. The game's online and co-op modes will support 12 players and feature four player split-screen.

Uhg EA announces game streaming service. Everyone talking about having streaming services will negate the need for expensive hardware. I'm sitting here like....all the different subs you'll have plus the cost of higher speed internet to support streaming in high quality will quickly surpass the cost of the console/PC. Plus when they go out of business or decide to turn off streaming of whatever game, you lose it forever.

Yep. That is the future, not this streaming shit. Paying a fee for a whole library of games will become extremely attractive by next generation. Particularly when one of the big three makes a 1st party game exclusive to the service. If it's a big enough game, that's a wrap on conventional 1st party releases.

Could be doable but really depends on how long the next gen lasts. Even then its probably at least 2 gens away instead of 1.

If the next gen has 2 upgrade phases and is more hybrid-like, that would create the time and bridge needed for the gen afterwards to be download-only. The download-only gen then bridges into the cloud/streaming gen. At that point, you'd be into the 2030s and enough time has passed for all the groundwork to be done and ready.
