I almost did that with SSF4. So furiating that game.

It's not the easiest shit to get into, as far as fighters go because you have to know about specific means of attack to get anywhere. Probably would have helped if you had someone experienced playing with you irl.

Try Tekken out. Easier series to get into. You got a PS3, yeah? D/l Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection. It's like $10. You'll be a hopeless button masher to start (and actually not be too bad, probably), but in a couple of hours you'll start figuring out moves with different guys and eventually learn the ins and outs. :y:

The only downside is the cheap ass boss, but that's more than made up for with the mode where you fight in different dojos.

Surely there's some value we're missing. I just need a week or two with it to be sure. Maybe my past conclusions were overly harsh due to playing Tekken so much. I'm much more open to alternate gameplay now.

I promise.

Possibly. It's probably why I despise all Namco fighters, because of much VF playing.

Dunno why I could always switch between SNK and Capcom 2D fighters and loved them pretty equally.

Capcom's Dead Rising Case Zero sells over 300,000 copies since its release last week. The "demo's" price of $5 turned out to be very popular and now it is rumored other companies might start to do games that seem like demos but cost money (ex. Acitivision, EA).

The last paid "demo" that ended up successful was GT 5 Prologue which helped fund the last couple of years of development for the main game.

Not really since its a prequel to Dead Rising 2 which is meant to tell what happened from the time of DR1 ending to the start of DR2 and what happened to Frank West.

You can play it without needing DR 1 or DR 2 but its very short and timed as a way to get multiple play-throughs.

The reason why it appears as a paid demo more than a regular demo is how you can save your stats and level (up to level 5) for Dead Rising 2. Capcom had a feeling people didn't want to pay much for a "demo" type game which is why it dropped from the initial $10 to $5 currently.

Its related more to GT 5 Prologue where its a demo in the sense you only get some of what the main game offers but you have to pay to play it.

Sure, it's designed to demonstrate the game and act as a demo, but don't call it a demo, because it's original content.

FFS, games used to actually demo themselves without some stunted version of the first level, but don't let that stop you folks from complaining when it's called a demo.

What other genres appeal to Arc? Is there room for Arc[Systems, Blazblue] creating a game that isn’t a beat-em-up or do you feel that developers should stick to what they know?

I would continue my work with 2D fighting but personally I’m also interested in 3D action game like Bayonetta & Devil May Cry or even Gears of War something with a 3rd person view. I would love to create a game like that in the future if I have an opportunity to do so. However my head is full of BlazBlue at the moment and I’m not planning to do anything else right now.

Update to the News regarding Capcom's Dead Rising Case Zero and Frank West.

I'm using the spoiler tag mostly for those who haven't finished Case Zero or haven't played it yet and don't want one of the central plot-line spoiled.

Frank West confirmed to be in Dead Rising 2 after Capcom initially said he would be in Case Zero and would probably have been dead by the time the second game occurs. Case Zero was supposed to tell what happened to West while explaining why the new character is in the game.

Right now he's been confirmed to be a selectable character for the game's multiplayer.

Random little story for you.

Lionhead chieftain Peter Molyneux claims that his original vision of a "physically correct" creature for Black & White ended up with an artist threatening to pull a knife on him.

This can get filed under the header "Things I never thought I'd find myself writing":

While speaking on a podcast with IGN UK (via iTunes) during the Gamescom event in Germany last month, Peter Molyneux mentioned that the sausages in the recording booth - because those Germans have sausages everywhere or something - reminded him of his earlier game Black & White.

Specifically, they reminded him of the creature's penis.

Now, if you've played Black & White, you probably know that the creature didn't actually have a (visible) Sgt. Peppy. No, this monstrous wangerdoodle was only in an early prototype of the game: "I for some reason had this obsession to make them anatomically correct. So the first version of this giant ape had this sort of beautifully physically correct - I'm going to say the word - penis dangling between its legs."

And in case the mental image in your head wasn't bad enough, said member "morphed depending on how excited your creature was."

That sort of thing would never fly in a game, of course, and Molyneux knows it. "I don't know what was going through my mind. I wasn't even on class A drugs! It was this bizarre thing," he says, and don't think we didn't notice that "class A drugs" qualifier, Peter. "It was this bizarre thing. Especially in America! Even if you show nipples they go insane, rating it under-the-counter product. It just goes to show you just how rubbish I am as a designer, really."

Nevertheless, Molyneux initially persisted, and the poor modelers working at Lionhead had to create the creature's morphable schlongalong. "The artist that modeled it ended up going completely insane. [He] threatened to knife me ... absolutely true story. He went on to found Media Molecule. Chap called Mark Healey."

Having never met Mr. Healey myself, I cannot say whether or not the founder of the LittleBigPlanet studio is likely to threaten to knife somebody (if only in jest). In all fairness, spending your work day painstakingly rendering a monster tallywhacker would probably drive most people insane, so it's hardly just him.

"Driven mad by making huge, sausage-like penises on apes - that's the sort of thing I get people to do at Lionhead."

Whether or not you believe Peter Molyneux's story here - because the only indication we have that this is the truth is the eccentric designer's word alone - I think we can all agree that it is, in fact, a story. A very interesting one. About a game artist going crazy from working on an animated giant monkey porker.

Paid £3 to download "The Simpsons Arcade" to my phone. I was misled. It wasn't the actual arcade game. It's a really simple and crappy game where you play as Homer trying to get a doughnut that Smithers ran off with.

Speaking of The Simpsons Arcade game, they should bring the real one to XBLA. 4 player online would be fun.

EA and Konami would have to work of an agreement for it to come on XBLA/PSN. They did with UbiSoft with TMNT, but EA would probably drive a harder bargain.

Just like it couldn't come on consoles, because Acclaim had the home rights to Simpsosns games, so Konami and Acclaim would have had to agree.

Sony patents add-on device to play PS2 games on the non-PS2 compatible PS3 models. Originally Sony took out PS2 compatibility as a way to save money and now want to have consumers pay for the ability to play PS2 games for any PS3 model.

The device itself is basically a mini-PS2 and doesn't use the PS3 CPU and GPU to play PS2 games since it has its own decoders and processors.

After promising Frank West's fate would be explained in Case Zero and then not occurring, Capcom announces a new DLC chapter called Dead Rising 2: Case West.

The DLC is 2 player co-op where West and Chuck are playable characters and might explain what happened to Frank West after the 1st game and how he met Chuck.

Case West as of now is exclusive to Xbox 360 but no date announced for release. Its assumed the pricing would be the same as Case Zero ($5 or 400 MS points).

Originally Capcom wanted Frank West to either be a cameo or explain what happened to him very early into Dead Rising 2.

Then they decided to hint at his story being in told in Case Zero and why Chuck is the new character.

Now it looks like he's going to be playable in Case West but no guarantee his story gets told in this DLC chapter.

During Microsoft's Tokyo Game Show press conference this morning, Capcom's Keiji Inafune took the stage to introduce the world to Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor for Kinect, a new interpretation of the classic game with the extremely expensive controller.

I can't believe McWhertor was right, but there it is in our E3 2010 predictions post: "Steel Battalion is revealed as Capcom's core Natal game." We all laughed and laughed, and now Capcom and From Software make the rest of us look silly with this new version of the mech game so complicated it required its own complicated and costly controller to play.

Capcom and From Software are collaborating on the new title, set in a 2082 without computers, which explains the gritty, World War II style. From the official press release:

"Manhattan, 2082: In a world where computers and almost all modern technology have been lost, the greatest nations of the world continue to battle for supremacy. The American army lands in New York to begin its first big offensive of a long ground war. Soldiers fire from the trenches as scorched bunkers belch black smoke. As comrades continually fall to the unrelenting crossfire of bullets, the Vertical Tanks make their relentless advance. Experience the battlefield as never before with Kinect for Xbox 360."

Inafune was light on the details, but since this is a Microsoft Kinect game, we're guessing that this time around you'll be taking on the role of the unwieldy, expensive controller.

Team Ninja leader Yosuke Hayashi revealed at an event in Tokyo this evening the developer's next major projects, including a new Ninja Gaiden game for consoles and the revival of a game we know as Ni-Oh.

Hayashi said that the team responsible for the Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden series of games was already hard at work on the follow-up to Ninja Gaiden II—and its PlayStation 3 port, Ninja Gaiden 2 Sigma—showing off concept art for the game he referred to as Ninja Gaiden 3.

The concept image featured a close-up of a bloody Ryu Hayabusa, the reflection of a blank-looking face in the ninja's right eye.

That image was the extent of what the new, lean, Hayashi-lead Team Ninja was willing to show at a dinner in Ueno. No platforms or release dates were given. Hayashi said that we should expect to learn more about Ninja Gaiden 3 sometime next year.

After completing work on Metroid: Other M, Hayashi pointed to the team's next cross-company collaboration, this time sticking closer to home. Team Ninja will be finishing the development of a game called Ni-Oh, an action game originally being developed by Tecmo's corporate partner Koei.

Team Ninja Reveals Its Next Games: Ninja Gaiden 3, Ni-Oh

We've only seen Ni-Oh, a game announced in 2005 as a PlayStation 3 exclusive, in pre-rendered cinematic form. Hayashi told us that development of Ni-Oh had been put on hold at Koei, but that Team Ninja was now taking over, working with Koei founder Kou Shibusawa on the project, switching gears from ninja-based action to something more samurai-centric.

Team Ninja didn't show anything new related to Ni-Oh.

The developer is currently hard at work developing a stereoscopic 3D version of its Dead or Alive fighting game series for the NIntendo 3DS.

Good luck, fellas. Itagaki will be watching.

Japan's venerable wrasslin' series, Fire Pro-Wrestling, is back and now on the Xbox 360. And now with Xbox 360 Avatars as playable grapplers.

Spike, the developer of the Fire Pro-Wrestling series as of the year 2000, will be creating a new entry for Xbox Live Arcade for release in 2011. Fire Pro-Wrestling lets you customize your avatar wrestler from a selection of costumes, unlock new moves over the course of your career in the squared circle and compete online.

Fire Pro-Wrestling has always been known more for its deep gameplay and character customization, something we hoped continues in the newest iteration. Avatars, though. Hmmm.

Microsoft have strict rules about what Avatars can and cannot do. I can't see us having exsplosive cage matches or jabbing forks in each others eyes. I can't see them allowing anything other than the basic one on one and tag matches.
Weapons and gimmick matches would be too violent for the Avatars. Not saying the game can't be fun but I can't see having as many options as other FPW games had. I only ever played one game in the series, in Japanese, so I didn't get far.

Player interacts with their avatar as if it's a separate character
A player's avatar does not have an autonomous personality or instinct. The avatar is under the control of the owning player. It can have idle animations and can respond appropriately to game events but it should not interact with the user as if it is separate from the player, try to get the player's attention in an annoying manner.

Violence which causes blood, gore, dismemberment, decapitation, maiming, or mutilation
Cartoon violence is allowed. Violence is allowed as long as there is no blood, gore, dismemberment, decapitation, maiming, or mutilation. An example of allowable injuries includes injuries that might befall an avatar in a sporting event such as American football. Avatars can die temporarily to depict failure.

Player's avatar talks
The player's avatar should not have their own voice. They are allowed to make individual sounds, such as laughing and crying but otherwise cannot use a voice.

Source (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=218002).

Would a steel chair count as cartoon violence?

Don't know how I feel about the Fire Pro game. On one hand, I nearly crapped myself in excitement when I saw "Fire Pro Wrestling". And while I do trust Spike to put out something good, I can't see it being anywhere on par with traditional Fire Pro games. It looks more like it's geared for a more casual audience and will likely have an arcade feel to it.

That said, I'll buy it if only for the chance of another true Fire Pro or KOC game being released in the states. It's a good sign that they're making this, since they did say they would never make another wrestling game. Though that can be taken two ways. Either they're testing the waters again or it's not a true wrestling game, like Fire Pro or KOC.

Tecmo Koei has today officially announced Dynasty Warriors 7, the latest in Omega Force's endless hack n' slash series. Curiously, the big news is that Dynasty Warriors 7 (known as Shin Sangokumusou 6 in Japan) won't be a multiplatform release, instead announced as a PS3 exclusive.

Whether it's just a PS3-only game in Japan remains to be seen, though it would be weird for Koei to leave out the Xbox 360 when it launches in the rest of the world. Either way, there will be much more information on the game on October 26, when Tecmo Koei holds a special press event.
All I have to say is, OH GOD YES! More Dynasty Warriors is fine by me, and screw anyone who thinks otherwise!

Activision considering an experiment on making cutscenes in a game a pay to play feature. The idea is to treat cutscenes from a game like a movie and since you have to pay to watch a movie in theaters or on dvd, you would have to pay to access the media or else you get nothing.

The plan would be around $20 to $30 just for the cutscenes on top of the normal prices for a video game. Activision did hint that this plan wouldn't be a reality until at least another 4-5 years or next console generation.

If for some chance it becomes successful, it wouldn't take long for the other big companies to join on this new money making scheme.

I want to laugh so hard at the idea of paying for cutscenes since it's the one part of the game lots of people skip over anyway, but you never know. Especially since they're suggesting it for the next generation, which means they'd doubtlessly be near movie levels.

The only reason it's coming out at all is because MS commissioned it. If it sells well, they'll probably pat themselves on the back and say it was due to avatars and commision a sequel.

That said, I wonder if it plays more like KOC than FPW just because it's 3D. They may have called it FPW because it's a better known brand than KOC but who knows.

Only a rumor as of now but Epic Games is considering buying the rights to All Points Bulletin which failed after just 90 days and caused its developer to shut down it doors.

Apparently Realtime Worlds and Epic Games have some sort of connection where the boss of Realtime Worlds is a personal friend of the VP from Epic Games. Once Realtime Worlds collapsed as a studio, they contacted Epic Games to see if they were interested in buying the rights to the game before contacting other companies.

Most likely Epic Games wouldn't take over APB and restart the servers but it would give them the source code and pre-made engine/environment to build a future MMO if they were ever interested.

Hideo Kojima doesn't rule out the possibility of making a Metal Gear Solid 5 game even though he previously said he was done with the series and that MGS 4 would be the last in the Solid storyline.

Original plan was to let another person take over the series but in a new direction or storyline while he would only give suggestions or help if the new team needed him (similar to Miyamoto being used as an adviser for Metroid Prime series).

Not sure how bad the exchange hurt Sony but in Nintendo's case, they made a profit for the year/quarter but due to the strong Yen vs weak Dollar, they ended up posting a loss for the year/quarter.

Super Meat Boy for Xbox Live Arcade is going to offer free DLC by including a special chapter in the game where the developers can upload as many chapters and DLC content for free even though Microsoft sets limits on free DLC allowed.

By using a chapter called "Teh Internets", they can go around the Microsoft requirement and give out as much DLC for free as they want.

Newest PSN firmware update 3.50 manages to disable or kill off a good number of non-Sony brand or licensed PS3 controllers.

Mad Catz confirms most of the pre-2008 controllers now won't work on an updated PS3 while their fighting pads and arcade sticks are guaranteed to still be working. Logitec controllers are not affected by the update due to being considered officially licensed by Sony. Rock Band instrumental controllers also assumed to not be affected by the update.

This update comes at the same day Sony warns consumers to not buy counterfeit or non-licensed controllers since they could catch on fire or explode while playing.

Well, this title's a PS3/Wii only game. Since it's two platforms, it's hard to call it exclusive. The prior ones were PS2 releases, but since I don't know about the series itself I wouldn't import SB2 anyway.

The similar guide for PS3 is that every single game is region free.

One of Sony's better moves.

Kinda ironic, since Sony were one of the people who pushed hardest for region locking and to block imports.

Occasionally they do something like this that has me thinking they've learned. Then they do something like pretend the PS3 is the best selling console in the world, and I /headdesk even harder.

Nintendo begins the process to fix the game crashing bug from Metroid: Other M by asking players who have a save file corrupted from the game to either mail the file on an SD card, the Wii if no card can be sent, or contact them for any other assistance.

Nintendo also confirms they will pay or reimburse for the postage paid to consumers mailing the card or Wii.

Nintendo also posted how the bug is produced and how it can be avoided on their game support website.

It is also assumed future batches of the game will have the fix already on disc or be part of the next Nintendo firmware patch.

Stop playing your little sister.

BTW, sick of extreme claims to a games difficulty/competitive level. And I understand how simplistic certain DOA mechanics are, but like hell you're gonna win pressing back+free. Get serious.

"Just use ultras in SF4 to win."
"No strategy in Smash, anybody can win."
"Tekken's a button masher."
"Soulcalibur's a button masher with scrub ringouts."
"Thermal's for noobs."
"Reach's bloom is for noobs."
"Stand still and counter to win in DOA."

And so fucking on. Almost always from people who spent all of 8mins with the game. And what gets me is what is actually brain-dead and scrub shit never gets called out or is in fact celebrated. Aim bloom in Reach; "scrub shit". Flag juggling in Halo 3; "being strategic". Mega Crash in TvC, "scrub shit". Spamming assists in MvC2, "being skillful".

Not a rant specifically at you LoDown but god damn.

Right, playing my sister, either one of them are lucky to even figure out how to fire on a FPS let alone counter on a fighting game. I can beat just about everyone I used play DoA with regularly, except the one friend that has 95% of his button presses as counters. But if that and over exaggerated boob physics are your thing, then have at it.

No since all they are fixing is the save file from the game if the system was mailed and not an SD card. Only way this would occur is if someone is unable to buy or get an SD card but wants the fix.

It hasn't been documented so far that the save file also corrupts the Wii but I would assume if it did occur then Nintendo would replace the Wii with a new one.

This is a DOA problem how?

Stop being predictable. Itagaki closed the counter window a few times over the course of DOA4 and made mid-counters two separate directions. If counter-spam beats you like that it ain't the mechanics doing you in, trust me.

Countering 95% of the time just wouldn't fly where I'm from. I don't think it would fly amongst a TPWW inv.

I have to agree with this. Countering is a bitch in DOA4. Worse still if you want to do any of the high damage, complicated ones. Plus the game i too fast paced now to be able to stand there hitting counters all day. Plus you could just throw him.

And in general fighting games are plagued with elitists claiming everything is scrub shit. Is it my fault that you jump in to the position a person needs to be in to get hit by an anti-air ultra in SSF4? Oh well, scrub a dub dub, that's your ass in the tub.

NBA Elite 11 vs NBA 2k11 ends with EA indefinitely delaying Elite 11. Bad reactions from the demo and realizing nobody wanted Elite but wanted NBA Jam contributed to the decision.

Previous free gimped version of NBA Jam for Xbox 360 and PS3 is now a paid stand alone title but no word on if its for XBLA/PSN or disc-based.

Basically EA goofed up badly since now there is no reason to pay $50 for the Wii version of NBA Jam with no online, NBA Jam for Xbox 360 and PS3 won't be free anymore with a price range between $15 - $60, and rebranding the Live series into the Elite series became a failure this year.

Only good news is NBA Live 10 to get an extra year or roster updates and Dynamic DNA mode for free.

Gunna put this in the 2K thread since Elite doesn't really deserve it's own thread.

The demo for Elite came out today and I tried and didn't like it but loved...the idea of it. I guess.

The presentation is ESPN style so that will blow 2K out of the water, no doubt. Wish 2K could cut a deal with TNT but I think that other shitty game has a deal with them. Anyway, I always love TV-Style broadcasts in games and it looks like Elite will have the leg up on 2K. No biggie.

The controls... are different. Obviously. I think I love it but I dunno. I was a big MLL (Lacrosse...lol) fan a few years back when Arizona actually had a team. Tickets were on the cheap and our team was actually good and the games were fun to go to. I always wondered what a true game would be like and to have movement of the player with the LS and movement of the stick with the RS. This seemed so simple and a no brainer. Basically, what the NHL franchise has done the past couple of years. There is an indy LAX game, but it's pretty terrible. I'm getting off the point.

I loved the idea of controlling the player with two thumbsticks rather than buttons. So I was really psyched to try this out. But for me, it doesn't work. Not the controls themselves, but the presentation of the game. I think if you take away the sideline camera angle you lose a lot of feel to the game.

I think it was an extremely ballsy move by EA to go to a drop down camera and thumbstick controls. Really ballsy. There will be a lot of backlash (mostly from black people whose screen names are YoUnGjEeZy, GhostKillllA, oOX smoke XOo, etc) and it will be interesting to see how this is played out.

So, I'm giving a lot of credit to EA for doing this, but I don't think it will work. And besides, even if they did switch back to buttons, they STILL have the inferior game. I'm not bagging on the controls. I love them and can't wait to see how EA can expand with them. But it's still not as good as 2K

It takes some extreme balls to completely rehaul a sports like they did. Especially without any feedback from the community first.

Bobby Kotick, always good to laugh at. Here's what he's been talking out his arse about this week so far.

On ex-Inifinty Ward staff

"It shook my belief in two specific people, who were my friends," says Kotick, who says the IW founders used Activision for personal gain. "The frustrating thing about that is, the stuff that these guys did, I never would have expected them to do. We're a public company, we've got ethics obligations, and the things they did were ... I would go to jail if I did them.

"You can't use the company and the company's assets for your own personal benefit, and you can't use the leverage that you might have for personal benefit -- you're not allowed to do that! And so we didn't have any choice ...*That's one of those really difficult decisions as the CEO of a company, where you step back and say, 'No good is going to come of this. They're going to leave and probably have a really hard time ever being productive or successful ever again, and we're going to lose some talented people, and there's nothing we can do about it.' And there wasn't."

It is unfortunate that the laws of the land don't apply to ex-IW staff, but would be used harshly against Kotick. I'd put him on prison if I were a lawmaker.

Pretty sure that a Respawn game published by EA will be successful anyway. Speaking of EA:

"Look, EA has a lot of resources, it’s a big company that’s been in business for a long time, maybe it’ll figure it out eventually," says the fire-kissed despair merchant. "But it’s been struggling for a really long time. The most difficult challenge it faces today is: great people don’t really want to work there.

"It’s like, if you have no other option, you might consider them ... But we have no shortage of opportunity to recruit out of EA -- that’s their biggest challenge: its stock options have no value. It’s lost its way. And until it has success, and hits, and gets that enthusiasm back for the company, it’s going to have a struggle getting really talented people, which is going to translate into less-than-great games."

What? Yeah, EA are the last resort when Activision has looked at your idea and pissed all over it. Isn't that how Brutal Legend got published by EA? Tim Schafer did call Kotick a prick ages ago. Koticks rebuttal?

"Tim Schafer. The guy comes out and says I'm a prick. I've never met him in my life -- I've never had anything to do with him," explains the nefarious businessman.*"I never had any involvement in the Vivendi project that they were doing, Brütal Legend, other than I was in one meeting where the guys looked at it and said, 'He's late, he's missed every milestone, he's overspent the budget and it doesn't seem like a good game. We're going to cancel it.

"And do you know what? That seemed like a sensible thing to do. And it turns out, he was late, he missed every milestone, the game was not a particularly good game ..."

He does have a point on that one, but he did also prove Schafer right by answering him like a prick. So, anything positive? He does seem keen on motion control. Hooray?

Kotick told Edge: "So as long as we think a peripheral is going to deliver something that’s compelling and interesting and innovative we’ll support it." He feels that both Move and Kinect are "superb" for dance games, and has been impressed with both motion controllers.

That said, Kotick still feels the need for specific types of physical interfacing for their games, and it sounds like they have a few more up their sleeves. He says that "we’re going to keep making physical interface products if we think that’s going to enhance the experience - and we have some really cool ones for next year."

As enthusiastic as he sounds about Sony and Microsoft's newest offerings, he does have one beef with Kinect: the price. Kotick told Edge in issue 220, "With Kinect… I love it as an idea, but [Microsoft has] got to get the price down."

Hmm, shouldn't have ended on such a sane note.

New details and screens released for Resistance 3.

Based on screens and video, most of the enemy and character models have been changed but not as drastic as was first expected when the studio said they were rehauling the visuals for the franchise.

And what of the new protagonist? The screenshots call him Capelli, which makes him Joseph Evan Capelli, Nathan Hale's squadmate and helper of sorts from Resistance 2. It looks like Capelli will be taking up the fight where Nathan left off at the end of the last game.

The game is still set for a late 2011 release date.

More bad news for NBA Elite since analysts were only predicting about 1.5 million copies sold combined between Xbox 360, PSP, and PS3 with about a third of the sales comming due to the NBA Jam bonus and not the game itself.

To put that number in perspective, the NBA 2k series sells about twice the amount per console than NBA Live does and last year's 2k10 sales alone on the Xbox 360 was more than what NBA Elite combined sales were being predicted.

EA also goofed up badly by not making NBA Live 10 for the Wii since NBA 2k10 managed to sell 3x more than NBA Live 09 did and it was the 1st time the 2k series went on the Wii.

Further, NCAA Basketball 10 had no direct competitor, unlike NBA Elite. "Once somebody switches over to NBA 2K, they are less likely to switch back, and EA risks losing them forever," Pachter noted. Wedbush Securities predicted sales of 1.1 million units for NBA Elite between now and the end of December, and another 550,000 between January and March 31. All of that could be wiped out by a delay or cancellation.

At the Nintendo press conference in Tokyo today, before turning things towards the new 3DS handheld console, company president Satoru Iwata took time out to mention the 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros.

While we already knew there would be a special Super Mario Collection coming to the Wii on October 21, Iwata also announced a new DSi LL (known as the DSi XL outside Japan) would be released to futher commemorate all things Mario.

As seen above via Nintendo's offical website, the new model is a deep red and includes images of a Super Mushroom, a Fire Flower and a Starman but not Mario himself.

The new "Super Mario Bros. 25th Anniversary" version will go sale in Japan on October 28th for 18,000 Yen, $214 at current exchange rates and the standard price for the Nintendo DSi LL.

From Kotaku:

The Next Smart Video Game Only Lets You Kill Once

The Next Smart Video Game Only Lets You Kill OnceSeldom in life does someone cackle in front of you like a James Bond villain, explaining how they will deliver your demise. When game designer Chris Hecker did this to me in San Francisco recently, I knew I had him.

See, Chris Hecker thought he was clever. And the truth is that Chris Hecker is clever. A former developer of Spore and a well-respected game designer, he is now developing one of the most interesting multiplayer games I have ever played.

The game is called Spy Party, a game that pits one player as a spy at a fancy party and another as the sniper across the street. It features just one death, triggered when the sniper player believes they have finally figured out which character in the party is the other player and squeezes the trigger.

The game might not be out for two more years, because Hecker has a notebook full of ideas, determination to polish this game until it sparkles and a desire to let no company mess with his ideas. "I want to make a game that is different," he told me when we hung out in his hotel room in San Francisco a couple of weeks ago and played his game. "I can't do this for someone who needs to have a 'return on investment.'"

Chris Hecker sure does talk a good talk about the noble art of game development, which helps when his opponent — me — is figuring out how to wriggle out of the knots suspending me over a proverbial shark tank. Hecker had told me I had no chance playing against him, because the game is not yet tuned to accommodate players of different skill levels. He also said all sorts of beautiful things that an ambitious and talented person would say about making their next video game on their own terms.

The Next Smart Video Game Only Lets You Kill OnceHecker and I sat across from each other, in front of two laptops wired to Xbox 360 controllers. He explained both playable roles for me, apologizing repeatedly that, really, this game is best played right now by two people of equal skill level, meaning not me vs. him. The sniper role would be simple, at least. The party, in the game's prototype form, is held in a single, minimally furnished room that has windows on three sides. Everyone in the party talks, walks around, looks at some statues in the corner, wanders over to the book case, laughs and so on. The spy is among them, but the sniper just watches. The sniper player can move their camera view to any windowed side of the room and zoom in for inspection. They can highlight characters they are suspicious of and darken those who they are sure are genuine. A laser sight from their gun exposes the sniper's viewing angle to the spy and they only get one shot. The sniper player may lock onto the shadiest character and fire a can't-miss bullet. They better hope they murdered the right person.

I asked Hecker to play well and then to play badly. When he played well, I was paranoid. Was that swipe of the hand from one character to the other something the computer did? Or was that Chris planting a bug on the ambassador, which is one of the spy's four goals in the prototype Hecker was showing? I fired. I shot the wrong guy.

Hecker told me that Spy Party emerged from his desire to make "an asymmetrical multiplayer game about subtle human behavior." Naturally, because it's a video game, I pointed out, this subtle game's got to have killing. Hecker laughed, though he wasn't yet doing his Bond villain cackle. Subtlety is his unusual game design goal. He wants a game that you pore over, that you study and observe. If you are the sniper he wants you to have to spot the tiniest clues. As the spy, he wants you to be able to make the slickest super-spy gestures. In this prototype, for example, one of the four goals for the spy is to move a book from a bookshelf at one end of the room to the other. Doing this correctly involves standing in front of the bookcase, taking a book from the shelf to read and then either putting it back for real or doing a slick move — triggered by a different button press — that slips the book under one's jacket while still reaching a hand to the bookcase, as if the book was being put back on the shelf. Even when Hecker showed me the animation I was two blinks away from missing it.

Spy Party has already proven to provoke devious actions. Hecker said that some of his spy-side game testers have taken to tapping on buttons that the 360 controller doesn't use, in order to make the sniper player think that a spy action is being committed. If they hear come clicking then they'll assume, perhaps, that one of the statue idols is being replaced? That's another of the spy's four goals, by the way. It may have been Hecker's description of such deviousness that made me realize how I was going to beat him at his own game. As he continued talking about all the bright ideas he had for Spy Party, I concocted my master plan.

The Next Smart Video Game Only Lets You Kill OncePart of what is so exciting about Spy Party is the stuff that happens around the game. Hecker has seen the game trigger strong emotional responses. I even felt it... guilt of all things. I've killed thousands — millions? — of enemy characters and even some friendly characters in video games with none of the pangs of consequence. I shot one innocent partygoer in Spy Party after tracking them for a few minutes, after being sure they were Chris Hecker's avatar and up to no good, and then, as they lay dead on the floor I realized I was wrong. I felt bad. Apparently Hecker's friend, Chaim Gingold, a fellow ex-Spore designer (he made the game's terrific creature editor) has been wracked by the same guilt when play-testing the game. Another Hecker friend, Spore visionary Will Wright, was less bothered. "Will doesn't care," Hecker said. The legendary game designer sees the characters for the digital constructs they are and moves on to the next session, ready to try to figure out who the spy is and shoot again.

I knew my time as the spy would be tough. As I tried this side of the game Hecker even checked whether I wanted him to be playing well or with sympathy. It was a clear sign that he'd already figured me out.

I would move my spy character through the party, watching Hecker's laser pointer find me and knowing the bullet was coming. There were times when I moved my character with a stutter, making the kind of awkward stop-and-turn move that a computer character would never make. Hecker sniped me, then explained that he is going to program the computer to sometimes make those kinds of bad moves too. Add that to his ideas list: He also wants these parties to be set in multi-room mansions with multiple players as spies who may or may not know about each other, and with snipers waiting outside. He wants there to be events at the party, like the singer drawing people to the piano so she can belt out a tune, giving the spy an opportunity to slip away. He wants to let the paparazzi character take photos, making a flash that temporarily blinds the sniper. He wants personalities in his characters, so that the lecherous partygoer hits on the ingenue. Spy players could choose any of these characters and role-play them as best they can while trying to accomplish their spy goals.

After each time that Hecker sniped me we were able to restart the room. I kept playing as the spy, but I had the option to select the four spy goals and my spy character. I don't remember which character I chose when I decided it was time to hatch my plan. It may have been the man in the plaid blazer. Maybe it was the general. Whoever it was, I do recall that I walked my guy over to the statues. I was going to do the first goal: idol swap.

As my character stood there, Hecker's laser-pointer found me. That's when Chris Hecker threw his head back and laughed. He'd found me out again. Really, he said, this wasn't a fair match.

No, it wasn't fair. Hecker hadn't shot me yet.

It would have been better if I'd played with someone at my skill level, he had continuously suggested. No, this was better.

I made my character walk toward his next goal. Hecker's laser followed. At any moment he could pull the trigger.

Or, actually, he couldn't. He only had a few seconds left, because unbeknownst to Hecker I had changed the rules of the game. I had ignored the mandate to select all four of the game's spy goals during our matchmaking preparation. I had set up the match so that my spy had only one task: swap the idols. A timer was counting down on my screen, as it would on the screen of any player who has completed all of their assigned spy goals.

The countdown timer finished. The game pronounced me the winner. Hecker, realizing what I'd done, made a different kind of cackle. He'd made a liar out of me and I'd tricked him.

Well-played, he told me. Yes, Hecker, and to you, well-made. Spy Party is one of the most psychologically interesting games I've played. Remember its name and follow its progress (on the official Spy Party site, if you'd like). Two years from completion, it could be worth the wait. It's a promising game in the making, with just one kill.

(Screenshots from Spy Party are from the game's current prototype and do not reflect the aesthetic and quality Hecker hopes to achieve with the finished product.)

seriously getting tired of IGN

now that this thread has killed the VG forums for me, can anyone tell me a site better than IGN for gaming news? I'm not too fond of gamespot either.

This thread.

The game sounds pretty amazing, honestly. Gonna be something I follow for sure. I'm guessing it'll be an XBLA/PSN title.
