It comes preloaded with 30 games. That's all you get. The appeal is all about the novelty, because there are way better ways to play all these games.

I was excited when it was first announced but the the more I thought about it, the more I realized it is just a nerdy paper weight.

I never really got excited about that thing. Most of the NES games I would want to play are available on Virtual Console, cartridge (assuming not super rare), or worst-case I'd just emulate it

Not to mention thee controller has to be tethered to it and the cord is only 2.5 feet long. So you literally have to be sitting close enough to the machine to touch it.

Emperor Smeat
12-23-2016, 03:49 PM
Best reason I've heard for the device's appeal is mainly to go after the older crowd who don't really play video games anymore but still have memories of playing NES games as a kid. Price-wise, the games are cheaper than on the Virtual Console and elsewhere while quality wise, its supposedly the best for repro style consoles.

Not to mention thee controller has to be tethered to it and the cord is only 2.5 feet long. So you literally have to be sitting close enough to the machine to touch it.

That is the biggest problem with it even though at least one third party company now sells extension cords/adapters for it. Feels like they wanted something of the Famicom to play a role in its design and took the worst aspect for it.

Man, it sucks right now and I have no idea what MS are doing if this turns out to be true. Sure, Forza, Halo and Gears will continue as normal, but then what? Crackdown has been in limbo for years along with Scale bound, Phantom Dust got cancelled and restarted with a new dev (I think it's just a remake now?), Fable was shitcanned which leaves all hope riding on Sea of Thieves.

Surely MS have some stuff ready for E3 though. Although it's not a whole new console generation, they can't have Scorpio sent out without a big showcase for it.

Feel bad for Platinum Games since Microsoft was asking way too much from Platinum Games than they could handle. Especially with how different Scalebound was going to be compared to their dev strengths. Doesn't seem like Microsoft bothered to lend teams or enough of them to help on the project unlike Nintendo and Star Fox Zero for recent games.

It's so bizarre to me in thenfscr of The Last Guardian coming out this year. Yes, I know its a business and all that, but Sony had work on that game on and off for 8 years. They couldn't get the frame rate above 15fps on the PS3 and there are accounts of Naughty Dog and Sony San Diego being sent in in to try and fix the performance in that time before the PS4 version.

And for what? A Ueda game that is amazing but flawed and they never sell that well? Scalebound may never have been good, but I had faith in it. Fable Legends was actually good and they still pulled the plug on that. Re-Core was sent out to die with 1/5th of its content missing because it wasn't allowed to miss that deadline.

Goddamn. Someone compiled the list of MS cancellations with details. Phantom Dust:

Microsoft wanted a longer single-player campaign; they wanted various features added and changed; they wanted Darkside to help contribute card art to the accompanying mobile game Microsoft had planned. “This kind of focus change happened on a nearly monthly basis,” said a person who worked on the game.

“They asked for things pretty quickly,” said a second person close to the studio. “We kept telling them, ‘We cannot make this game for the budget you want.’”

In the fall of last year, another obstacle popped up: one of Microsoft’s creative directors, who Darkside sources described as integral to Phantom Dust’s success, left the company. His role was never re-filled, which hurt Darkside a lot—producers at the studio had to communicate with Microsoft’s creative team on a daily basis, and he had been one of their most important connections in Redmond.
One particularly strange moment for Darkside happened around then, when Microsoft’s Ken Lobb said on a podcast that Phantom Dust would be “about a 30-hour JRPG.” The developers were baffled. That was never part of their plan. “Nobody knew he was gonna say that,” said one Darkside staffer. “We were told by people at Microsoft that Ken just does things like that.”

Obsidian's Stormlands, which was cancelled after seven months of development, leaving Obsidian in a state of near ruin, at which point they had to lay off 30 people, go to Kickstarter, start work on a f2p game, and turn the remnants of that game into Tyranny.

Then we have Scalebound, which according to several sources involved Microsoft setting very high milestones and withholding pay

http://i.imgur.com/j6LFpLX.jpg

And as a result a significant portion of Platinum workers are without a task, Kamiya on mental health leave, and the studio bereft of payment for a month of work.

Does that count me as one of Kojima's "investors"? Or do I fall under the category of "gamer"?

Emperor Smeat
01-26-2017, 06:39 PM
Gamer.

The investors stuff is Kojima mainly being upset at how much Konami kept pushing into the mobile and pachinko route at the cost of everything else which caused the split to happen. Neither route has really helped Konami and they picked a bad time to enter the pachinko market since it started its decline shortly afterwards.

Konami was getting pissed at how long MGS V was taking to develop and the amount of money being spent since they wanted to use the extra funds for pachinko related stuff instead. On one hand, they were right to be upset since Kojima wasn't getting any closer to finishing and the project was getting too expensive to continue while on the other hand, them clashing with developmental decisions is why the game starts to fall apart near the end.

According to Zelda seris producer Eiji Aonuma, Monolith Soft has been helping with the development of Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Mostly been working on the game's world and map layout.

Also means the dev team for Breath of the Wild is likely the biggest Nintendo has ever used for a game.

In a recent interview with Gamekult, Aonuma explained that, while Monolith assisted with graphics design and other elements in Skyward Sword, their role in Breath of the Wild was focused on topographic arrangements for the game’s vast open world.

Here’s Aonuma’s full comment about Monolith’s involvement:

“On Skyward Sword, Monolith had mainly helped us on graphics design and other artistic elements. Even though we could have asked them for help on the technical side, we realized their way of making games was completely different from ours and we didn’t have much to learn from them on this installment, since we were almost doing two different jobs. On the other hand, for Breath of the Wild, we’ve been assisted by level designers used to large game areas, in order to make topographic arrangements.”

I didn't bother, but I hear good things.

Also, that boost mode makes Until Dawn, Bloodborne and AC Unity run much better. Rainbow Six Siege is going to need a frame rate limit, it's hitting 110fps in some places.

Activision thinks the setting was CoD's problem.

When they see people laugh at a WW2 or 1 CoD, after Battlefield 1, they'll see the folly of their ways. They need a year (maybe two!) off, both IW and Treyarch, to completely reevaluate how CoD should go forward as a game series. Top down.

There's a strong chance the industry itself outgrew the franchise.

It is a shame as it's the best CoD single player campaign in years. But if you want a single player FPS, Titanfall 2 was even better.

Not officially no. Every time it's brought up, Harada says it's still happening.

I dont think it will ever see the light of day. I imagine they started working on it and then had the same realization other companies already have: Fighters with super powers dont translate well to a 3D space.

Ryus Hadoken would be useless in a 3d engine, you just tap a direction to dodge sideways and commence to beat downs. Same with the hurricane kick, it would lock him into a long animation in 1 direction, could be easily dodged, and then result in getting your ass handed to you with no ability to defend. Yoshimitsu could literally sidestep and charge up his 1 hitter while Ryus animation played out and then cut him down instantly. Its a difficult issue to work around without breaking the fiction and changing the fighting style of the SF roster to fit the engine better. Youd have to remove a lot of special moves and replace them with combos and cancels.

Interesting tidbit there about the FF7 remake. It makes me wonder if they scrapped the idea for it to be episodic and are releasing the full story as a single package since they finished the voice work for the "main game" and not episode 1.

Still planned to be broken into episodes. Some speculation the producer might have meant only the 1st episode was almost done or easier for them to do it all at once instead of waiting for future episodes for voice work.

Crytek rumored to be facing a possible shut down in the near future. They were previously dealing with serious financial problems last year and it doesn't seem like the situation improved at all since then. Morale itself is really low at the company for its future.

Been late paying their employees, series of firings and departures, and now looking at potential lawsuits from their remaining staff in regards to pay issues.

In terms of recent game sales, none sold well or got near the expectations from EA and Crytek.

January 2017: Warface is sold to the Russians, and the entire marketing and publishing team is fired http://crytek.com/news/crytek-scales...t-frankfurt-hq There are regular meetings in which Avni lies to us from the sky so that people do not leave or sue them, and suddenly there are no more news about the sales of the other studios. Salaries are still at least a month too late (December salary came in late January, money for Janaury is not here yet so at least 4 weeks late, and no word on February). By the way, during this time, a Faruk Yerli is still driving his new Lamborghini to work while the employees in the supermarket are looking for the cheapest lunch because they do not know if they will be paid in time for the next rental.

The company implodes and more and more executives leave the sinking ship: Engine creative director has gone last fall. Director of Production went in the summer . Audio director has lesft/ been fired in the fall (rumors ...). Engine business director went in february. Marketing Director was fired in January . Executive producer of all our vr titles goes in March. Most of the people are just frustrated because we have been lied and held for months, and no one knows if the company can recover. And for all who now say "why do not you look for a new job". This is possible in America, but those of us who want to work in Germany (married, children etc) have almost no choice but to stay here because there are only 2-3 other high-end developers in this country. How it goes on? No clue This week, the GDC is in America, and Crytek, as supposedly big player in the engine sector (our arrogance) has no booth or news. There are also rumors that people will sue the company over late salaries or being fired, but those rumors have been around for months, so I don't know what will happen.

Yeah, it just depends what you want out of a Mass Effect game. I've always found the combat to be drab and repetitive and OH THERE'S SOME WAIST HIGH WALLS, BET I SHOOT SOME FUCKS, so I usually just turn it down to casual to get through them faster and carry on with the story. Combat is better, but it's still just there for me. Problem is, when your character is smiling like a goof while saying someone close to them died takes me out of that part of the game.

The biggest sins so far from the trial are the awful character creation (which is getting patched apparently) and the god awful interface. you have to go through 5 screens to change your active quest because they're split into stupid folders, then realise you can't track that yet and have to repeat the process to change it. Then planet scanning takes an age because for some reason, they're really proud of their planet changing animation and you have to sit through it without skipping.

Still, because I love the series, I'm going to treat it like a Matrix sequel. Sure, it's not very good, but godammit, I still want to finish it.

I'll probably put it down after the trial and pick it up in the summer when things are a bit quieter. Got Nier, Horizon and Persona 5 which all play better to get through first and I'm still exploring that Zelda world.

The animation just looks really off from top to bottom. I played through ME3 recently and it's a notable downgrade. Plus people just look really weird all the time. When you're trying to do a game that's about connecting with characters, it all falls down.

It isn't. It's getting it because it's constant. The trial on EA Access right now has every single human character animate stupidly. It's not silly bugs to point and laugh at like with most games. It's the whole game.

Please name an example, it really is stand out bad. It's notable because you take certain standards of animation for granted today. If it isn't people being modelled out of proportion or eyes bugging out of heads, it's lip syncing like Pingu.

Kalyx triaD

Well proportions are hard to objectively judge since that's all on the general art direction and perhaps they were going for something more expressive in certain games.

In my view very few games have ever truly nailed lip syncing and I don't even gauge that in any game anymore.

GTA tends to be high quality in this regard, tho.

The whole thing just reeks of stupid decisions by EA. Just look at the timeline.

1) The guys that did Mass Effect want to do a new IP. Neat, but we can't be without the big IP, so find someone else to work on it
2) Take the studio that made such, uh, "hits" as Boogie Superstar, Spore Hero and The Sims 3: High-End Loft Stuff and get them to do ME3 multiplayer content
3) You're now ready to make a big game after that string of successes, clearly! Start work in 2012 on the new Mass Effect
4) Several years pass without a peep
5) It's 2017 and the game still isn't done. Considering the unfinished animation, bugs galore and already said character creation wasn't finished and will be patched, but EA has given them 5 years and they need it out this financial year

What a mess.

The timeline isn't really the issue here from my perspective. They had 5 fucking years to do a sequel to an already established franchise and were basically given complete creative liberty with the new setting. I've been eagerly awaiting this game and now......now I don't know.

I bet when MS first lost console exclusivity with Mass Effect they were probably a bit upset. Now I bet they are like THANK GOD.

FFS all they had to do was use the same engine and animations from ME3 with increased resolution and better textures/lighting effects bolstered by the increased power of new gen systems.

Hey Rog, hate to obliterate your views on modeling realistic 3D characters but...

1:1 proportions to actual human bodies is at worst difficult and actually at best non-ideal. For reasons I've spent a lot of my time reading about. I have an interest in this side of the industry, you see. Would you like to know more?

I really hate to come off defending a developer who I find currently pathetic and riding on their name brand but I'm telling you this is overblown. There's way better cases to make about Bioware and what they did to their two main franchises.

That's just one tiny thing, but please show me some art where it's desirable for someone to have arms that are half a foot short. It's just one drop of rain in the flood. Every conversation you look at in the game, the direction, animation, framing, lighting, delivery is all just weird. It just looked rushed and amateurish. Mass Effect previously was a series with lavish production value.

I'm sorry if your higher order brain is too advanced to perceive what normal human behaviour is supposed to look like. I'm sure, however, you've worked out there's some sort of agenda going on here, and I'd love to know what it is.

"it's not as bad as you say, for reasons" is literally what you just said

Kalyx triaD

Jesus.

Gather around children...

- I'm not saying it's not bad, I'm saying a) animation issues have been in other games but it seems this game is getting picked apart, b) the character models do not have to be 1:1 scale to actual humans and sometimes for good reason.
- I'm not defending bioware.
- I asked if he would like to know more. Non-answers don't invite more discussion.
- In many 3rd person games you will find that the 3D characters models, not the concept art, Rog you dwarf, the 3D character models are scaled based on what you are going to be looking at over 90% of the time. This means they are not as tall as they should be, this means their backs are wider, this means their arms are shorter. It means a few things very few of which is having a 1:1 human body scale model.
- Fighting games do not give a fuck about proportions, famously. Zelda doesn't care. Halo doesn't care. GTA tends to be spot on. Sports simulations tend to be accurate for obvious reasons. It's not good or bad it depends on art direction and what the game needs for a playable avatar.
- In FPS you're not even controlling a whole body, its a camera with floating arms holding a gun and sometimes a magic lower torso. An avatar is added when another player's cam looks at you, but the puppet they see is not what you are currently controlling. This means... the proportions of the arms and legs are actually different FROM IT'S OWN AVATAR IN THE SAME GAME. HOLY SHIT. Yadda yadda this is old.
- I do not mean to sound condescending, I rather to have explained that character models do not have to be realistic. I'm wondering why you guys expect ME to represent realistic character models. To my knowledge Bioware expressed no such desire.
- The reason I'm not wasting my time showing a pic of Bayonetta or Chris Redfield is because finding evidence of other off proportion characters does not do anything for anybody. Even if you think I need that to win, so I should score an easy 'win', it's besides the point. Because we don't know that Bioware either don't care, have gameplay reasons for the proportions, or hell actually wanted it 1:1 but just sucked at it. But one thing's for sure: If you think 1:1 body proportions is some kind of objective goal there's too many games to show otherwise.

The Rogerer
03-19-2017, 03:44 PM
A lot of waffle. Does any of that relate to Mass Effect? It tries to portray realistic/Hollywood humans, viewed in third person in cutscenes that would require normal proportions. For some reason you've decided that everyone's suddenly gone mental and decided to pick on this game, again, I'd ask for your theory on why I've ignored these issues in thousands of other games and suddenly started picking on Mass Effect Andromeda.

Kalyx triaD
03-19-2017, 04:31 PM
It's entirely on you that you believe cutscenes 'require' realistic proportions. And you just completely made up this 'realistic/hollywood' 3D model standard. Bioware never told you this was a thing for them.

If I had to guess I'd say you're harping on this because it's hip to do so atm. And I'm most interested in the lack of gameplay assessment now that the demo is out.

"After our series was praised for it's memorable characters and some of the best presentation of cutscenes that generation. With a new generation of consoles, we've decided to make folks more stumpy. Also their faces should be flat and motionless, except for the lips that should go meep meep like Pingu. Then the camera should linger inappropriately and against the flow of dialogue, that our director appear to have done in one take. What you don't realise, and this is very technical, is that when you have a first person shooter, you have to change the way you model the hand so that it looks right. I mean, we're not doing that here, This is very advanced technical game stuff, so we don't need artists who understand the fundamentals of life modelling or animations. Because, you see, when you're rendering characters in certain genres... now, not this game, but other games...

They brought some of that on themselves.

They've had loads of employees, current and former, chime in on that "Circle of Life" mess, and admit they tanked some sales to hit what was basically their corporate K/D ratio.

Not saying it's the biggest or the only reason, but it had to be a sizable chunk of those metrics. And I speak from a position of being a former employee for quite awhile (and technically over three districts). Things vary store to store, but a lot of "the most shitty" was universal.

Don't think it is a big deal shutting down some stores. I have 2 locations in the same mall and 1 literally 2 blocks away of said mall. I am sure the Switch is helping sales. Think the main problem was even with the sales of the Switch, it doesn't seem to have been enough to counter the PS4/Xbox One/etc being down a lot more than they were expecting. Even in terms of games, Switch games likely didn't come close to covering the decline from other big games released in the quarter and previous quarter. They do make a chunk of sales from selling digital codes but that was also a lot lower than they were expecting.

Only real bright side is since their non-gaming sales are still good, they pretty much are just replacing those gaming stores with more non-gaming stores.

To answer your question: "Circle of Life" was a cute little name GameStop decided to dub their policy of pushing used sales and preorder numbers. It has been a mainstay for the company business model for a long time, but what it had become was taken to the Nth degree.

Essentially, sales metrics were tracked by the store and per employee at said store. A percentage of sales HAD TO BE - as in WAS REQUIRED from on high - to consist of used games, accessories, and a certain number of pre-orders had to be met. Again, per employee AND a target per store.

It has long been one of the major complaints by customers (aside from trade pricing, but that's a whole 'nother discussion in and of itself) about the chain that employees are super pushy about pre-orders. This idea of each employee being mandated to get so many pre-orders under their belt per week is a major reason for that trainwreck. People don't *want* to be pushy, but when you're only there one or two days a week in a high volume store, you likely needed an ungodly amount of presales to "justify your position" as it were. There is likely a drawer full of applications of many other expendable, fresh faced nerds you can be replaced with ad infinitum with dreams of just working there around their favorite hobby just like you.

Add into that the used sales. The policy was structured in such a way where selling new items such as games, accessories, and even systems, actively HURT the used game metrics by inflating the percentage of used stuff needed that week. If somebody came in and bought a shiny new PS4 and a few brand new games for their birthday, and didn't also plunk down about 8 pre-orders and buy a bunch of used shit, that's about $500 counting against not only that store, but that employee running the transaction. Customer has no reason to give a fuck. After all, they got what they came in for. The employee, however, is now sweating bullets.

All of this came to a head with a recent Kotaku article where this toxic environment (finally) came out in the open to documented public knowledge as opposed to being something people "know" but don't/can't talk about much like that "EA Spouse" letter cracked the window on that publisher's shady ways a number of years back.

As such, GameStop finally dialed back on the stringency of the policy (not because it was bad, mind you, but because of the PR mess- it's still a corporation, and had this not come out, you can bet your ass they would have still been doing the same old shit) and have recently started factoring in new sales into part of the business metric in a way that screws over their frontline grunts a tad less than it used to.

***

I understand about the saturation. There are THREE GameStop locations near me: all of which are literally within the same two mile stretch... though some of that has to do with business consolidations over the years than just building redundant shops. The one at the mall was, once upon a time, a Software, ETC location, the next one down the street started life as a FuncoLand. The third was an actual, true GameStop location. They oddly hold their numbers, though, and don't cannibalize eachother's sales like you'd think they would, where other standalone locations nowhere near these three places that you'd think could thrive have come and gone. Even so, closing down a few places isn't exactly "The Fall of Rome" that people are portraying this as...

*but*

... if they keep going, and need to close more after next year, then would be the time to start looking at it as a potential disaster for the company.
