Why? They arent going to add something significant that is going to change the story.

Not the point.

The movie isn't finished and any rating for the cut you seen is as folly as reviewing a game based on the demo or beta you played. I agree that the additional effects and scenes may not turn the leaked cut into a-whole-nother movie, but giving an unfinished film a final rating just seems like a reaching gesture to me.

But you're not some professional reviewer where you just broke some code or some shit, I'm just saying.

The Vanishing 8/10 - Really good Dutch/French thriller. Guy's girlfriend goes missing at a truck stop, so he spends the next three years trying to find out what happened to her. He's contacted by a chemistry professor responsible for the murder who says he'll tell him what happened under the condition that he must experience what she went through. I think Hollywood did a shitty remake with Sandra Bullock.

I thought the film was well done, considering it was an MTV affiliated production. I enjoyed the representations, but the movie made me angry at the same time. I always get angry when the deaths of Pac and BIG come up as well as when the East v. West Coast rap wars come up.

In general I just hate whenever anyone goes before their time, and both those guys were clearly taken before their time.

The Untouchables - 7/10 (imo, the score really hurts this. Instead of it fitting in with the period the film depicts, which it does occasionally, it mostly makes the film feel like a parody. Would literally have given it 8/8.5/10 if it weren't for that)

Big Nothing 7.5/10 (Funny, unpredictable, quite short, well worth watching at least once. Dunno why they felt the need for Simon Pegg to have an American accent though, not really needed. David Schwimmer is essentially playing a toned down version of Ross)

Wow, really good movie. Can't believe I let it sit on my hard drive for months before watching. Dude was more of a James Bond family man, who pulled off completely ridiculous stunts. Some shit was completely out of this world, like bad guys shooting machine guns at him from 5 feet away and missing. Him chasing down a car ON FOOT. Lots of OMG moments, like at the beginning when a "bad guy" jumped off the highway and was hit by a truck. I liked it. Probably won't watch again, though.

Why would past films have a bearing on a current rating? And what elements accounted for that .5? The filter?

Jeritron
05-21-2009, 02:21 PM
Because it's a fourth sequel?

Lets be honest, when they're trying their hardest to poke you on the shoulder and say "Hey this is a T2 sequel in case you didn't know", it matters. The movie itself was a 5/10.

The only enjoyment I got out of it were moments like Arnold's cameo, or the Guns N Roses song, or catchphrase lines like "Come with me if you want to live" and "I'll be back"

That's why the past movies have bearing on it. Those moments are only cashing in off the viewers previous memories. They're not offering anything new. It's a nostalgia moment. It doesn't make the film good, it just makes you smile a little bit based on the other films.
So yea, that's why that stuff matters. Don't try to act like there isn't an interextual criteria present. The whole gimmick of the movie is that it's a sanctioned predecessor of T2, and the 30 seconds sum total of the movie that is quality is clinging to that.

So yes, I enjoyed some of it. It was a pretty bad movie, but is elevated to just mediocre because of a few moments. They don't make it a good film. I'd enjoy them just as much in a video game. Get it?

I give .5's because I think there needs to be a grey area between a 6 and a 7. I mean seriously, you're judging a movie. There are degrees.

There's a difference between an 85 score on a test, and an 80 score. This movie gets a 65. That's passing. A 6 wouldn't be.

Kalyx triaD
05-21-2009, 02:33 PM
So why not just... give it a seven? You can argue degrees, but you really don't know what accounts for that .5 do you? It just seems like a precise score. If you gave it a six or seven I would have imagined your feelings just the same. This isn't a crack against you, I just find the whole 'point-anything' score pretentious. X out of five is much more direct, IMO.

I didn't see the movie, but I'm willing to bet you liked more than 30 seconds. That's not a bit harsh to you?

Jeritron
05-21-2009, 02:39 PM
I meant 30 seconds of T2 nostalgia. The action was great too, but whats action when it doesn't serve a great story, and you don't care about the characters engaging in it? It's nothing, and it makes it a living video game for 13 year olds...hence the PG13 rating

. I don't know how much the enjoyable elements added up to. It was a quip.

The plot (if there was one) and the characters were fairly awful.
I gave a breakdown of how I felt about the movie in the other thread.

How is the point any less direct? It's just a decimal to give it an extra half point. Like I said, it's like a test score.
A 6.5 is passing. A 6 is not. I gave it a 6.5 because I found it to be inbetween. It wasn't a fail, but it wasn't a good movie.
A 7 would be a good, but not great movie.

6 is mediocre
7 is good
8 is very good
9 is amazing
10 is a masterpeice

I felt it was somewhere between "okay" and "mediocre"

At the core, though, it's a pretty bad movie. Once you strip away the Terminator bells and whistles.

I was joking about the round up to 7 thing. It was for people who would have a problem with my low rating. It was a joke aimed at this type of shit.

Kalyx triaD
05-21-2009, 02:43 PM
Your score system makes 1 through 5 pointless, though. Why don't you just take your 6 through 10 and make it 1 through 5?

Jeritron
05-21-2009, 02:47 PM
It doesn't make 1-5 pointless. I said 6 was mediocre.

1-5 would be degrees of bad. How is that pointless? If you are under .500 on a score, you are bad. There are different degrees to rate how badly you fail.

Why must you play devils advocate on all things fanboy? I don't see you questioning my Angels and Demons rating, or my In Bruges score.
It's because it's Terminator and I'm not sure why you're compelled to speak up on the behalf of any negative aura surrounding these things. Sometimes these movies suck. It's okay.

6.5/10 ----mediocre.

Jeritron
05-21-2009, 02:49 PM
The truth is rating systems are all flawed. It's a measurement to gauge an intangible thing. I'm giving it extra degrees to make it less flawed.

The substance of my rating would be in the explanation given for why I did or didn't think it was a good movie, which I did.
See that.

Kalyx triaD
05-21-2009, 02:58 PM
I have to address your frequent comparisons to test scores.

If I get a 65 in a test, my teacher could show me exactly what accounted for that 5 points that put me between a 60 and a 70. Tests use strict systems that take correctness/errors into account. Now unless you're gonna tell me you broke down the movie into elements that were correct or erroneous, that led to such a precise score of 6.5, it's a bad comparison. This is my issue with any score system that does this. It's like straddling the fence. A test score isn't straddling the fence because there are tangible, exact evidence that constitutes an exact score.

3/5 is mediocre.

And with you using a scale of ten, you already have enough degrees to work with, no?

Jeritron
05-21-2009, 03:38 PM
You're gonna tell me you can account for any tangibles exactly with other numbers? What real difference does it make? At what point does it become pretentious.

Me and others have been using a 10 point scale with decimals for this entire thread. Suddenly it's a problem with Terminator?

It's because thats where I'd place the movie numerically. It's not an exact score. I'm not using a decimal point like .432 or something.
It's a .5. By that I mean half. A half a star.
Just because it's a decimal doesn't mean I'm being a mathematic stickler.

Kalyx triaD

I just use the Netflix system. 1 Star = Hated it, 2 = Didn't Like it, 3 = Liked it, 4 = Really liked it, 5 = Loved it.

However there are some movies I feel fall between these where I throw in the .5. To me a 5/5 would pretty much be a perfect movie which I don't really encounter often. I really really liked Star Trek but didn't LOVE it/think it was perfect so I gave it 4.5/5

FAIL FAIL

PASS
PASS PASS

Jeritron

what about PASS.FAIL?

Jeritron

I give it a FAIL.PASS bordering on FAIL. Certain elements receive a PASS, but ultimately it comes out as a FAIL.FAIL. You can feel free to round that FAIL.PASS up to a PASS.FAIL if you don't like that the FAIL has been labeled a FAIL.FAIL, when it may really be a PASS.PASS

Aright so there are like 2 pages of discussion about the grading scale so I am just going to say right now that the 5 star scale sucks because you could just easily convert anything in it to the 10 point scale which is more widely understood. Why would you say 3.5/5 when you can just say 7/10, and then you can be like oh that's easy, 70%. If you were going to give a movie a 7.5/10 rating also known as 75% on the 5 star scale, you would say 3.75/5. What the fuck, who is gonna do that. It is just a 75%, or a 75/100 if you want to go one decimal place further.

Wolverine: FAIL/PASS.PASS. I went in with fairly low expectations to this movie, and they were met. There were a couple cool action sequences that kept this movie from becoming a FAIL.FAIL, but between all the needless changes in characters, unecessary dialogue and flat out bad action, I couldn't justify letting this into the PASS. Not enough Gambit and no point in putting Scott Summers in there. All the complaints you've heard are warranted.

I'd think that would be a good thing, but now I feel they should have used some game plots. This movie does not know what to do with itself. There are scenes totally disconnected with the rest of the film. It was more like a series of short films; I expect titles saying "Episode One: Alice vs Hillbillies", and "Episode Two: Alice Dreams of Crap". Seriously, the first 5 minutes was utterly useless. Then when an actual plot gets going, you don't care (see how important the five minute rule is?). Characters are killed off seemingly for no reason other than to force an eventual reboot of the series, and Alice's character enters some pseudo Jean Grey-Phoenix level of presentation that I cannot follow as a sympathizer. Oh yeah, her blood was the cure for the T-Virus all along. Paul Anderson, thank you for Mortal Kombat, now stop writing.
