Polar - 3/4

A high concept action film with slow burning interplay, more Wick (the soundtrack and the dog shout-out were very Wick-esque)than Taken yet with some hugely detracting and distracting miscasting and misfiring on the acting front.
Mads Mikkelsen is perfect for a role like this, he's a physical specimen with charisma in abundance and an excellent wry sense of humour. The good bits are as good as Wick, the bad bits look like they belong in another film entirely. There's a gang of assassins that suck all humour from the screen and Matt Lucas cast as the nemesis is questionable in a way that makes me wonder if maybe the director had been watching Tilda Swinton in Snowpiercer a bit too much. Whatever caused it, the boss and the gang were dreadful and took too much screen time. All other aspects were either predictable yet brilliantly realised and styled or completely unpredictable, cool as shit and techno as hell.

There was this one bit with lasers... I won't ruin it for you.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly-6.5/10

Wanted to give it a 7 because the animation during the action, and those sequences were absolutely stellar.

The story and motives behind Broly this time around were also much better.

However, Paragus seemed to have more of a motive than Broly, and he was just kinda there. In the original, Paragus actually had a personal vendetta and plotted his revenge. Whereas in this one, he's just randomly found, and used as a pawn in what seemingly amounted to a sparring match for Frieza to watch. It didn't feel anywhere near as personal this time around even tho it's supposed to be canon.

Also the ending was really anti climactic. And honestly, I found it corny and very unsatisfying. Sure it leaves the door open but it didn't resolve anything.

So yes I liked it, but I didn't like it more than the original. I liked it about the same.

Velvet Buzzsaw... half way through and I'm starting to think that Nightcrawler was great by mistake.
Rene Russo is the wrong choice for this film, Zawe Ashton was exposed as out of her depth in broad British comedies years ago and it is appallingly apparent how little she offers in a big budget Netflix film when you see her acting alongside everyone here. Toni Collette should have been given the Russo role, Rene Russo wasn't cool in the 90's when she actually had a name so this "Rene-sance" being forced down our throats makes no sense commercially nor in terms of drawing an audience.

It's asking a lot of Jake G to pull this movie out of its own arse.

I may well stop watching this. It is very poor.

SERENITY - 3/10

(Film w/ Matthew McConaughey & Anne Hathaway).
It's a giant mess. It started off as this interesting, sexy, noir thriller and then halfway thru the film it reveals it's twist, which comes out of nowhere, and makes no fucking sense -- but the film then continues on with it.

The big, dumb twist is:

They are all characters in a video game.

The Invitation - 4/4

When a film as heavy, as agitating and uneasy as this seems to fly by like a train car made of toothpicks you are assured that it will be rent asunder by it's own lack of integrity before forty minutes are through.
Then you spend 90 minutes waiting for a collapse that never occurs because someone somewhere found the only super powered train car made of toothpicks that is as aerodynamic as it is impossible. Yes it rattles and rolls and it scared the shit out of me the first time I rode it but I really can't recommend it enough. At the end of it you know you can survive something the world ain't ready for.

I know this isn't a proper review, it's a bit of a cop out and I'm close to being sorry for that...but I refuse to be the exposition for a movie that fucking tight.

Just watch it.

Logan Marshal Green and John Carrol Lynch are outstanding, Michiel Huisman and Tammy Blanchard are unfalteringly brilliant. Every single aspect of this film was refined to brilliance and it shows in a way that my fears will always recall.

Just watched another Sandler/Spade comedy "The Change-Up" on Netflix.
I liked it. I laughed a lot. I just do not understand why I can be so enamoured by comedy and yet critics trash the genre on a daily basis.
A childish, smutty comedy is one thing but Sandler has never made one of those. They all have heart in them somewhere and there is never any filth.

I love comedy and The Change Up does the job just fine.

I think there is a critical vendetta against Happy Madison.

However, in an interview with Variety Tony Lips' son said "It's unfortunate to me because I don’t want to hurt the Shirley family in any way. [Don Shirley and Tony Vallelonga] were together a year and a half and they did remain friends. There’s a lot of information [the Shirley family] doesn’t have, and they were hurt that I didn’t speak to them. But to be quite honest with you, Don Shirley himself told me not to speak to anyone. And he only wanted certain parts of his life. He only allowed me to tell what happened on the trip. Since [the family] were not on the trip—this is right out of his mouth—he said, ‘No one else was there but your father and I. We’ve told you.’ And he approved what I put in and didn’t put in. So obviously, to say I didn’t contact them, that was hard for me because I didn’t want to betray what I promised him [Dr. Shirley]."

Journey's End - 3.5/4

A stripped down WW1 dialogue-driven film with minimal action and great emphasis on tone, atmosphere and fantastic use of what little it has.
This is the sort of war film you would get from a director in the forties and fifties - no budget but a great script and access to proven talent.
This is no romantic rehash, nor is is dispassionate and cold. Unusually it is a heartfelt and realistic homage to men who's days were numbered and who's emotions were strained beyond temper.

Heavy going and incredibly unforgiving, a companion to Gallipoli in it's ability to infuriate and appal.

Paddleton was extremely on the nose... Ray Romano puts in one of the all time great performances though so if you can handle the concept prepare for the old cliche that comedians do drama better than anybody.

I'd find it hard to fault the film, in fact it was honest and excellent in every way. I just did not like the way it made me feel nor the inevitability of the outcome. It is a hard film to rate for that reason.

I doubt I would ever watch it again despite the unassailable brilliance of Ray Romano's turn. He really is magnificent in it, I actually went in thinking Mark Duplass would steal the show yet again but this was all Romano.
Mark Duplass is on a crazy run of productivity lately. I hope he doesn't burn out or go nuts because he's the sort of guy any aspiring writers should look at. He's great.

An interesting documentary about the most notable people behind the Flat Earth movement. It hints at Patricia Steere being independtly wealthy but never explains where the wealth comes from. Gets into the psychology of why people (likely) believe the Earth is flat - and why they won't ever (likely) change their mind, with interviews from scientists. Mark Sargeant comes across as a loveable everyman. AJ Styles being interrogated by Daniel Bryan for thinking the Earth is flat on SmackDownLIVE makes a brief appearance.

Wonder Woman is a good film but people are having a laugh if they think it's anything more than a superhero movie about a stupendously fuckable broad.
It's nothing new.

The movie was trying to do way too much. The protagonist was not at all sympathetic and shows no vulnerability at all. Brie’s portrayal was disappointing considering what she’s capable of. By Marvel standards, it was ridiculously bland at best. The way they handled her amnesia, past life and relationships was also subpar. There are some “cool spots” here and there but overall, it was a major letdown.

I think it's apples and oranges to WW tbh

Wondy is a much more emotional film and totally different. And yes, WW is a much better movie.

I wouldn't say Carol is 'not vulnerable' in this film, I'd say she was given about the same treatment as Tony Stark in IM 1. She's a smart-ass who has some chops, whose biggest adversary is really internal.

If that's the case, they failed miserably. They couldn't accomplish a fraction of what they did with RDJ and his portrayal of Tony Stark.

This movie isnt about her being vulnerable in a physical sense. She deals with some things internally though. I agree with Slik as they gave her the Iron Man treatment.

7.5/10 for Captain Marvel. The first half was as much of a cookie cutter Marvel movie as you can get. The second he really stepped it up and threw in some good curveballs.

Manson Family Vacation - 4/4

This is so brilliantly written that I only knew fully what it was about when it ended. For a steadily paced film with no great tricks or flash that puts a lot of value in the script. That the two lead performances were up to the standard of the writing says a lot about the actors themselves. Jay Duplass is as solid an actor as you'll find but he brings a lot to this one. It's easy to highlight Linas Phillips as the stand out but I think the subtlety of Jay's performance brings out the very best and most likeable version of the character Phillips is playing. The best way I can say it is that the film is as open and honest as the relationship between the lead characters, which is to say that the truth comes out in the end... not a moment before.

I think the ending itself serves as a way to hurl perspective into a situation which none of us would be prepared for, and it does so in a split second through a fence with a look that hit me for six.

I should say it's not a big fiery twist ending or anything, this is an almost purely emotionally driven film and the situation is a strange familial one, certainly not a strangely familiar one...

Linas Phillips in Rainbow Time gives the best performance of a developmentally challenged adult that I have ever seen.

It's a strange film, absolutely brilliant in terms of awkward tension and frustratingly honest in it's depiction of a man who can be very difficult to live with. The laughs are truthful and again, honest. It is a story with it's heart right up in front and it asks nothing more than patience and understanding.

This is a laugh out loud film and it's as forthright as any film I can remember seeing. It pulls no punches and actually embraces the aspects of character that other film makers may balk at when offered the script.

The plaudits belong to Linas Phillips for this little masterpiece. This is how you make independent films.

It was good from an entertainment standpoint. But it's forgettable.

That friendship angle and the emotion they tried to tie it to felt really tracked on and cheesy. It just didn't land. And honestly, neither did Marvel. Larson was good at times but I don't feel we really watched her character grow.

The villains and their plot were also meh. Extremely uninteresting and just kinda there.

Overall, I enjoyed it as passable entertainment but it falls short of the best Marvel films and isn't anything memorable or groundbreaking.

Fitzcarraldo - 3/4

A slow, deliberately frustrating journey through an extremely hostile natural environment mirrored back in the plot, the production problems and in the wait for something big to finally happen.
It does have to be admired as an absolutely unnecessary exercise, an almost extravagant use of real physical manpower and presumably a whole bunch of human rights violations.

The story is that of an ambitious man run down by lack of aptitude, the film a perfect reflection of it on screen and in it's well recorded, torturous production history.

I don't think the film is as good as the story it tells or the methods Herzog used to tell it but it is a sight to see knowing how it was made. Throw in the documentary "Mein Liebster Feind" as proof of Herzog and Kinski's completely insane working relationship and it's hard to imagine how this was ever finished.

Kinski plays a role Jason Robards had filmed 40% of, contracted dysentery and quit. Mick Jagger was supposed to be in it too but due to the crazy delays he dropped out and was never replaced.

This is a noble attempt at realism through legitimacy but I feel like Klaus Kinski was brought in in desperation and it shows. He's not who I'd have cast, the character needs to be more sympathetic rather than utterly pathetic.

I watched The Piano recently and fucking hated it. It made me want to strangle Holly Hunter and she doesn't say one word in the entire thing.
God it was bad. Anyway I looked it up and it holds great critical acclaim yet in amongst the reviews I found this treasured gem:

The most insidiously awful type of film, however, is Arthouse Lite. A key example is The Piano by Jane Campion. It is middlebrow, pseudo-literary cinema, which is shallow and prissy and genteel. Those self-regarding pretty-pretty compositions of Holly Hunter on the beach, drove me up the wall. She's mute: which manages to be such a smug passive-aggressive idea. That's my thing about bad films. Honest dreck is fine. It's straight-to-video rubbish and I don't get upset about it, but I can get upset about middleweight nonsense.

That's exactly the sort of film that needs to be burned out and removed from sight so that nobody can copy it.

Terrence Malick makes films as bad as this.

Shazam!-8/10

Really fun, heartwarming, plucky little movie. This is there approach Suicide Squad should've taken. The stakes for the characters are high, but it's still an intimate, small scale story that doesn't leave you asking "why wouldn't Wonder Woman or Supes just show up?".

Loved where they went with the ending and how they utilised the family. I'll leave it at that as far as they go. But it's a really fun, lighthearted movie with funny gags and pokes at the DC universe.

I'd put this above Aquaman and below Wonder Woman as far as the DC films go.

Delightful. Very slapstick. Stop-motion gets better and better every time a new film is released.

^^^

So I ended up having the entire theater to myself to see Missing Link, but it didn't start out that way. When I arrived to the theater there was another person present, sitting a few seats down from me, same row. They ended up leaving...I think because of me... :D

I looked around and said "I think we are the only people here" and the guy turns to me and says "Yeah, I was thinking about seeing this or Dumbo because I have a Stubs membership" and I said "yeah, I have one too" (Dumbo is AWFUL, side note).

Then he said "Or Hellboy" and I said "I was going to see Hellboy, but the Rotten Tomatoes score is something like 13%". This was the moment of "the triggering":eek::eek:

The guy turns to me and starts rambling for maybe 30 seconds - it seemed like longer - about how Rotten Tomatoes is propaganda who protected Brie Larson and Brie Larson is a terrible actress and can't act and Brie Larson has no emotions and ruins every movie she is in. Clearly, a very serious and important issue of our time.

I said "I think Brie Larson is great. The movie she won an Oscar for, ROOM, she is fantastic in that" (weird grumbling sound from guy) "I can't wait for Endgame in a few weeks, she is going to kick ass in that".

At this point he mumbled something that sort-of-kind-of sounded like "I can't...do this" and then he got up and left. I thought maybe he went to the restroom or concessions, but nope, he never came back, ever. It was a delight having the place to myself, so "Thank You" to Brie Larson, you helped eliminate this dude tonight -- and probably Thanos in a few more weeks. :y::wave:

Hellboy (2019) - 4/10

Reminded me of the 2nd Michael Bay Ninja Turtles. There's some fun generic action, there are hints of some good themes and a good story, there's a villain who seems threatening but fizzles out.... everything just kind of fizzles out actually.

Not as good as the original but filmed better and a sharper production design. Tone is good overall and pacing works. Just doesn't quite have the 'x-factor' of the original imo.

Good question.

I would give it a 7.5/10 for excellent atmosphere and story with depth, but in need of a stronger ending. For the record, I think the original builds to it's finish better and this film has a slightly different end.

Triple Frontier-7/10

Liked it but didn't love it. Thought the performances were really good, and Oscar Isaac is a man crush of mine. As is Affleck. And Pedro Pascal. And they were great. But the story is kinda meh.

4 military guys decide they want to rob and murder a drug lord and cash in on their skills for their own gain, which goes well and is pretty much the setup for the 2nd and 3rd acts.

This is where the movie goes kinda meh. The situations they find themselves in is driven by greed and desperation but other than a few fleeting lines, it's never really focused on. Shit happens but the emotional heft is lacking when they do. Not because of the characters themselves, but maybe because I just wasn't invested in what they were doing.

The ending is pretty unsatisfactory as well. Again, a lack of emphasis on their greed being the biggest reason things didn't go as planned and went south fast is what makes it that way for me. The cast is the saving grace. This is a pretty mediocre heist story that's elevated with a cast that's better than the material they're given.

Digesting the movies a bit more.... I know people love Ron Perlman as Hellboy.... but I think maybe David Harbour did a better job in the role.... Unfortunately, Harbour was not in a good movie at all.

I guess Harbour could also have had the "advantage" of being in an R-Rated movie, while Perlman had to be PG-13.... Of course, Perlman has the "advantage" of actually being in a good movie....

It's not as bad as The Nun, but that's really the best compliment I can give it. It feels more like a bunch of short films in a way, instead of a cohesive film, even though it only has a handful of characters. It starts out fine but halfway thru the movie completely falls apart.

I posted this below but I figure it might get seen more here If you want in on the preshow app beta I'll have 30 free invites in november if youre interested. You watch 15 minutes of targeted ads on your phone and get a free movie ticket. Its completely free for whoever gets invites to use and there are a limited number of people using it through this year and early next year so it should at least work through then though no guarantees. I get access to the app in july ill let everyone know how it works.

Did this since I got screwed over by Sinemia (now bankrupt and out of business) and Moviepass (still works but a shell of what it was). I figured for $60 I just need to see 4 movies to get my moneys worth out of it and I dont mind watching a few ads to see a free movie.
