Not the best or deepest Pixar effort, but a stellar voice cast and a fun, brisk plot still make it a funny good time with a little emotional heft towards the end.

I hated the end. I get changing what happened on real life since he's done it before but I felt there should have been more a reason for the Manson followers to change their target besides "Rick dalton was on TV a few years ago and killed people, and he was just yelling at us, so we gotta kill him now" instead of what they were planning on for (at least going by the movie) 6 months.
If I was doing it, I'd have had them go to kill Sharon Tate, get spooked by seeing Rick in the pool thinking he saw/heard something even though he was drunk as a skunk and have cliff save him basically like the movie played out.

Jackie Chan plays a former special forces soldier now in his 60s who suffers immense tragedy after a bombing in London. He goes on a mission to find the bomber, putting him in the middle of the political plotting, backstabbing and leveraging Pierce Brosnan finds himself in trying to play both sides of the Britishand Irish fence. Thoroughly enjoyable if not a bit thin. Sad Jackie Chan might be the best Jackie Chan.

A re watch, obviously. Watched it with my 4 year old daughter, who loved it. Film is criminally underrated and would be a huge hit nowadays. Fuck me, it's been 30 years and I still love this movie.

Fighting With My Family - 3/4
A funny, heartwarming story about WWE's Paige and her oddball family. I particularly enjoyed Florence Pugh's performance and the attention paid to the emotional aspects and toll that wrestling takes on its performers.
I was excited to watch a film that kept the laugh ratio respectable and yet kept the emotional tempo high enough to swing back into drama expertly.
Great fun, would watch again quite happily.

Oldboy (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0364569/?ref_=rt_li_tt) (2003) - 8/10 - Never watched this and finally did. It was good. Lots of cool parts... Feel like I would have liked it much more in 2003 though. "Fight Club-esque" in that way.
638 Ways to Kill Castro (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0918485/?ref_=rt_li_tt) (2006) - 7/10 - Documentary about some of the insane and evil ways that the US tried to kill Fidel Castro. Interesting... "TV documentary" quality though tbh.
Snowpiercer (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1706620/?ref_=rt_li_tt) (2013) - 6/10 - From Bong Joon Ho, the director of Parasite. Was fine but was like way too overt in its "class war" theme. No subtlety... Also was mostly just like an action movie. Cool concept though...
The Thing (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084787/?ref_=rt_li_tt) (1982) - 6/10 - Was fine... Seems like it doesn't really hold up. Felt bored... Expectations were too high I think.
Alps (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1859446/?ref_=rt_li_tt) (2011) - 5/10 - Interesting concept... Love the director... Movie didn't really go anywhere...
Hail, Caesar! (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0475290/?ref_=rt_li_tt) (2016) - 5/10 - Coen brothers movie... Not that great overall... Disappointing
I Love You, Daddy (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7264080/?ref_=rt_li_tt) (2017) - 3/10 - That Louis CK movie that he made before he got "canceled." Not good... Not good at all... Felt kinda embarrassing... Not even any laughs at all...

Chris Hemsworth plays an ex military soldier now working as a for hire mercenary type who gets contracted to retrieve the child of the biggest drug lord in India kidnapped by a rival drug lord in Bangladesh.

The Conversation-6/10
Gene Hackman lead feature about a man running a private surveillance company who's hired to spy on the wife of a top executive. Gets a little too involved in the recordings in trying to crack what the cheating couple is insinuating when they say "he'd kill us if he had the chance". The film breaks away from this plot to highlight Hackman as a paranoid, socially inept loner, which isn't half as interesting as that main plot.
Couldn't really get into. Found it a little boring and I think the focus on the character as opposed to the story is why. It's not even a 2 hour film, and cutting 29 minutes or so of the character driven stuff prob would've made it better for me personally.

Just saw Prison Break: The Final Break movie. It was ok at best. Least favorite part of the series by a mile though. The format and stories they tell with that show demand way more than a couple hours to make them work. It stripped out so much of what made the prior seasons of the show so great and wittled it down to the bare minimum. No time to develop the new characters in any way or flesh out the plan into the levels of detail I was used to. Just seems so whack after watching all these super in depth plans come together over the course of a season with all the twists and turns and double crosses only for them to easily spring someone from jail in a couple hours with hardly any effort at all.

Watching "The Platform".
How the Hell does this pile of crap have a decent rating?
The acting is atrocious.
The plot is already razor thin and the development is infuriatingly mundane.
Repetition might be a form of comedy, but it makes for extremely lazy dialogue.
It's also guilty of shoe horning in a very dreary and childish political ideology which is likely the root cause of its rating.
A damning indictment of any critic would be any acknowledgement of this as a positive in their review.

Actually I drank 2 tall cans of Relentless energy drink and nearly had a fucking panic attack. That isn't a joke.
That film is a painful exercise in the unparalleled pace of the highs and lows of high roller gambling addiction.
I saw a Mark Kermode review that said it invoked Bad Lieutenant the old Abel Ferrara film and I would agree if not for the fact that the newer Bad Lieutenant is actually more frenetic and a better example of addiction as a whole.
Uncut Gems was an incredible film though, one I will not forget anytime soon. No matter who says what, that ending was world class. Completely perfect as a story, the realism could cause every viewer to hate themselves a little more.
As for performances it was all beautiful. Not one aspect was misused or misappropriated in any way. The absurdity of it was so close to real life I would bet good money that a substantial amount of improvisation was allowed.
Adam Sandler is one of my heroes. I realise how unpopular that opinion is and I totally understand it. I just see the world class actor hiding in between silly comedies and I imagine how much more he has to offer.
I honestly think he will win an Oscar one day. He has it in him.

She was about as realistic as a person can be on camera and her contribution made the whole film much more upsetting in so many ways.
I hope she gets to work with more directors that actually know what acting looks like. She was equal to Sandler in this.

I'm finally watching my copy of Seven Samurai. I bought it last year and it has sat there intimidating me ever since. Three and a half hours is a long time.
Anyway I'm 75 minutes in and so far it's very funny. I wasn't expecting the comic element to be so prevalent and it has worked a charm in warming me up to the Samurai themselves.
This opening act is the archetype for all films that build teams early on by introducing each member individually.
It's sets the social/political climate in rural Japan firmly against the Samurai as a preferred defence and establishes a "hero we need rather than the hero we want" attitude to the townspeople.
It's extremely enjoyable storytelling at its heart. The aspect I am most enamoured with is how easily the tone adapts as the imagery flits from sombre stoicism to jovial comedy and immaculate violence.
This is shaping up to be every bit the classic I was promised.
Seanny One Ball
05-26-2020, 04:49 PM
The second act is the Seven Samurai preparing the farming village to defend themselves against the bandits.
It's around an hour of more intense, revealing social commentary driven by the Samurai's integration with the villagers who's perceptions of them are at odds with their reasons for being there.
It's all moving along nicely, the wit and charm are still in full effect though there are a couple of scenes involving women that are vividly unsettling and I still don't understand one of them in the slightest.
It threw me off.

There's the world famous solo mission trope where a character proposes an insanely daring act of war and them re-emerges later after cutting a swathe of unseen destruction.
Respect for keeping it realistic though. It wasn't one against a hundred and nothing blew up.
That's where Hollywood goes wrong with the adaptations. It tries to one up common sense too often. You can see this film was written not to be like 300. It's not the story of insurmountable odds, it's the story of a carefully plotted strategic defence.
You're getting a whole hour to resolve this issue where nowadays it's all told in an epic final showdown.
If you take anything from this it's that bamboo spears actually look scary as shit when wielded even by the caring hand of a film extra told not to poke anybody important.
Seanny One Ball
