That scene where peter wakes up and you can vaguely see his mother on the ceiling was creepier and unsettling than just about anything ever. The fact that you can barely make her out was what made it so effective. Gonna be seeing shit in the shadows for a week.

Good cast that has great chemistry together. I'm forever in love with Anne Hathaway. The plot was good enough and the heist itself was good and fun to watch. Subplot and payoff were a little meh but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

"Suburbicon" - 3/4
This was a lot more enjoyable than reviews would admit. I think people have a problem with the unnecessary racial sub-plot but I get it man. It's a film about white entitlement, guilt, shame and the bad decisions that go along with it.
I enjoyed Julianne Moore and I thought the kid was pretty good too but Matt Damon really should play more neurotic heel characters. He played a dark hearted, amoral, fidgety snake in the grass as well if not better than he did in The Talented Mr Ripley. A few good bad-guy roles could see him land a proper Oscar someday.

Downsizing - 1/4
You know you're in real trouble when a film goes to "comedy Asian accent" territory but keeps everyone in a straight face just long enough to legitimise it for morons.
This film lived up to the very bad hype. Avoid because it eats up over two hours with pseudo politics and a horrendous waste of Kirsten Wiig and the comedy her bald presence guarantees.
This was a real eye opener. Thank God Nebraska, Sideways, The Descendants and About Schmidt are all masterpieces because this one reminds us that even the masters have their great failures.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom-6/10
It's enjoyable for what it is, but the set pieces feel old and far too familiar. The cloning plot is back and they double down on it.
The ending leaves it open to really expand the universe, in a way they really haven't to this point. But to echo Dr Malcolm, just because they can, doesn't mean they should.

Ben Hur (1959) 5/10 Visually it was amazing. No CGI Greenscreen bullshit back then and looked amazing in scenes. Was very slow paces, not much going on in scenes. Heston had no range. The infamous race was impressive as fuck. Happy I watched it, but never want to see it again.
Blocker - Surprisingly a funny movie even though some bits are heavily far fetched. I enjoyed cena and his muscular but. Pamela Adon's daughter is a stone cold fox. Would do. 6.4/10

Southland Tales - 3.5/4
One of the sporadic offerings from the director of Donnie Darko, and a better film in my opinion. This is a film for a contemplative mood, a film to make you wonder about genre and style. The director uses actors known for playing outlandish characters or for giving over the top performances in lowest common denominator comedies and other genre films and he interweaves musical performances and choreography to give the film a sort of musical American-Manga feel.
This is deceptive and appears incredibly low brow at first glance. A bit shiny and plastic, like the box is worth more than the toy until you open it up and feel the weight and see the quality.. The actors and the style would be hugely off putting to many critics/students/connoisseurs of film and it possibly put people in a state of unease which I think has coloured the reviews with accusations of tackiness, poor direction and a confusing plot.
I feel that way about Donnie Darko and conversely I enjoyed Southland Tales a great deal and feel it is a far more worthy and sincere film than the disingenuous and pretentious, Donnie Darko.
I see similarities with Japanese cinema and comics in this flick. I think it may be a bit of an homage.

It's one of those films that has everything going for it but the story. It's the Emperor's New Clothes to sell a story with so little to it off the back of others desire to feel smart or cool.
I could be wrong, I find myself occasionally rewatching a once hated film and finding more merit in it the second time around. Boyhood - 3/4
Watching this years after the hype had died down gave me a chance to see this for what it was - a brilliantly achieved experiment in film making with some excellent observations and insights into human interactions that Richard Linklater has made his signature. The time spent, the dedication to the project and overcoming or avoiding the obstacles that a production period of 15 years must have presented is an achievement so singularly impressive and unlikely to be repeated in fiction that it has to be respected and admired. The only comparable thing I can think of is the far longer running "7 and Up" documentary series by Michael Apted now running into it's 60-something year.
With all of that said I found the plot itself to be extremely bleak in parts and far too middle of the road in others to balance the tone. Not a particularly happy film nor did I think Patricia Arquette deserved an Oscar for it. No actor in the film was particularly impressive but I did like the two children that grow up in front of you, that was beautiful and the main reason people were so overwhelmed by it.
Dazed And Confused is still his magnum opus, followed immediately by A Scanner Darkly.

Natural Born Killers - 1/4
Oliver Stone is a mediocre director who has skated by with a generously high reputation built on bad films that make money. Somehow he seems to be a good screenwriter. Platoon is a great film but perhaps his direction was more a product of his involvement in the war and his brilliance as a writer than his aptitude as a director.
Now that I've said all of that, Natural Born Killers is a Badlands rip off with acid western direction and a real waste of talent in the few roles the film has.
It looks like Hunter S Thompson directed Bonnie And Clyde...but Hunter S Thompson was a loudmouth junkie loser so I'm not sure why anybody would want to see through his eyes.
As an indictment of the behaviour exhibited in the film by the protagonists it fails on every level as it makes no attempt to demonise their behaviour, simply explaining away their crimes by way of the film's title and some bad taste vignettes of their early home lives.
Everybody is a bastard but the kindly native Americans, nobody is righteously punished despite the brutal and complete annihilation of the majority of the cast.
This is a film that is feeble under even the slightest scrutiny and despite Stone's insistence on it as a morality story that doesn't glorify violence it is basically murder porn for 90's weirdo's.
I think everything has it's place and this was just bad enough that I'd say it belongs next to Maniac Cop or Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer in terms of worth. I don't resent these movies, I just have no desire to see them again now that I'm no longer bound by the youth enticing mystique of Adult rated movies.
I have to say that this was particularly bad, even in a week that included Downsizing.

Martha Marcy May Marlene - 4/4
John Hawkes and Elizabeth Olsen are as talented as anybody working in acting today. I have a real tendency towards them as actors and a real and engrained distaste for films that are hopelessly grim, unsettling or depressing.
Martha Marcy May Marlene is a story about emancipation, indoctrination, abuse, escape and re-assimilation. It is dark, ugly and up close but it's an honest film with good intentions, wonderful performances and a uniquely accepting tone which might sound odd but in review it is easy to see how a more judgemental take could have spoiled the lasting impact.
This is a film that could easily be turned into a play. Each scene is made for a stage really, you are exposed to a lot of conversations, explanations and proclamations from John Hawkes.
Two great performances hold together a pretty impressive piece of work. The ending stayed with me.

I'm watching the Shape Of Water. The first 15 minutes are not encouraging. This is one of those films I'm liable to throw in the bin.
I know that this is an homage and good natured rib on old style horror and the steam punk fantasy but come off it. This is like modern art, the joke costs too damned much to be worth the punchline.
To use some antiquated language: So far it's about a masturbating mute with obvious and revolting mental retardation, Richard Jenkins plays a neurotic old queen and Michael Shannon hasn't turned up to save me from killing myself yet.
Octavia Spencer is still sassy and black, Wanda Sykes must have lost the coin flip.

Now there's Nick Searcy playing a murderous military oaf keen for vivisection.
I feel like this is trying to be to horror as Airplane! was to comedy or Warrior was to martial arts movies. It's choc full of tropes but I don't like any of them. They just make me confused for the hype.
This is like every film Maila Nurmi ever made fun of.
Rod Serling was coining these quasi-profound truly maudlin tropes back when he was busy writing, creating and overseeing the Twilight Zone... and that was half a decade before the time in which this film is set.

The Shape Of Water - 1.5/4
A derivative, hammy, camp and consistently predictable "tropestry" that should hang on the Wall of Shame.
This is not a good movie.
One positive is that despite the shamefully mediocre material Richard Jenkins, Michael Shannon, Octavia Spencer, Nick Searcy and especially Michael Stuhlbarg play their parts very well.
This Sally Hawkins was unknown to me before and hopefully will fizzle back into annihilation because I think she's really quite bad. She shouldn't shoulder the blame for her character being entirely unappealing but anybody who makes me wish a mute cleaning lady would die, in a film where the mute cleaning lady is supposedly the heroine, cannot be a good actress.

I love the rock so i like everything he is in so the score reflects that. Definitely good for your hollywood blockbuster over the top action movie. Movie moved at a nice pace and kept me interested throughout. Poor Jeffery Dean Morgan was more or less cowboy Negan in this. I know the man has acting chops so not real sure why he got typecasted or typecasted himself. Do kinda wish rock was opposite zoe Saldana though as i quite love her and the actress in this reminded me of her. Zoe would have just had the better ass to watch running but i digress.
If i am allowed a bitch it would have to be the end where george, the fucking monster, just randomly helps a dude out of a window like "oh crazy monster gorilla isn't gonna eat me now." Really surprised they didnt pull a claasic scene from the game and had george reach into a building and eat someone. I guess that was Ackerman's scene but it just wasn't the same.

Watching "Game Night".
This is so weird, dark and awkward I don't think they have the right balance for a comedy nor the right chemistry. It's missing a lot in the laughs department but it could have been a pretty great movie with a bit of heart in it.
It seems unnecessarily mean spirited instead of raunchy. It's missing the identifiable bad guys that made the actions of the protagonists in Horrible Bosses so redemptive and justified any schadenfreude.
Jesse Plemons is so sympathetic he just makes me think the others are jerks.

The ending of the film managed to tie up virtually every concern I had very well. The ending is so much stronger than the beginning and the middle is just weird but it all comes together to make a film I will have to watch again.
Either the makers of this film were given carte blanche or they sold this the hard way because on paper it cannot have been an attractive script. I would have worried big time about financing a film that does what this film does to the viewer if I was a studio head. People walk out of comedies as much as any other type of film and some people won't have the patience for this.

Super Troopers 2 - 6/10
Didn't realize there was almost 2 decades between these two flicks. That's a long fucking time. It obviously didn't capture the magic of the first one but there was plenty of funny bits but I would think 17 years later they could come up with a better premise and plot line for this movie. Honestly I thought this should have been better than what it was but I mean its a stoner comedy flick so we can't really be getting to pissy about it. I will probably do a back to back viewing some where down the road.
The First Purge -- 6.5/10
My least favorite film in The Purge series. It didn't flow as well as the other three have. Costumes/Masks were all good, as they tend to be w/ this series. Marissa Tomei was underused imo and I wish that
The audience would have seen her in the van begging and pleading before cutting to security cam footage of her being thrown out of the van and shot
Game over, man 6.3/10
From the workaholics crew this over the top comedy is what you'd expect from this group in an r rated setting. Tons of profanity, drug use and a couple of penises. This movie is basically a workaholics movie with a few tweaks to the 3 main characters but not really very much except one is gay. Not bad by any stretch of the imagination and there is actually a decent co star cast led by Neal P. McDonough who i absolutely love. He will forever be type cast as a villan but he is so deliciously evil i don't mind.
The plot is outrageous as are a few of the death scenes but the movie is meant to be absurd, over the top and funny. It hits on all those cylinders in bits and pieces throughout but in the end it really just seems netflix said "we got the money to give you to make a movie but we cant get the rights to workaholics so make us something as close as possible to that without us getting sued."

Really fun. For a movie about science they spent a lot of time turning it into psudomagic. Could have easily been a Doctor Strange movie. Baring that flaw the movie was great. Good characters. Well written call backs. The Wasp was fabulous though id have liked more of her.

Watched first purge tonight due to Ant Man being sold out and I had a movie pass...so hey watch something
It was ok. I get why they went where they went with it. Not sure why I was supposed to feel connected to a few characters and a lot of it came off as a big hero action movie at times which is not the formula that should be followed. Like I said, it was ok. Also, not sure why everyone had their fucking cell phone vibrate on LOUD when you know for a fact people are killing everything that moves. Maybe there wasn't a silent feature back then... I can't remember.
5.7/10 - Now there's a purge tv show. Lame.

Moviepass #73 Antman 2 - 5/10 So I just watched thevfirsr one today for the first time (not gonna rate it here) but it got me interested enough in the sequel to watch almost immediately after. The sequel seemed like it didn't know what it wanted to do all over the place ..there was at least some more humor..but really I just didn't like it as much as the first one by a wide margin
Still time for them to fix it, half an hour left...better late than never.
Jesse Plemons saves the movie.
Typical. Never doubt Plemons.
Meth Damon rules. Quality movie.

Really want to see this as I'm a huge Mr. Rogers mark to this day. Problem is that everyone says you'll cry (why? I remember this old prank show that thought it would be funny to remove the TV from his hotel room figuring he'd be upset about it and demand they find another tv. A terrible premise for a prank to begin with. Like, were you expecting that anyone, let alone Fred Rogers, would throw shot around the room because the TV was gone?? Anyway....
They have someone show him the room and he's just like "It looks fine, thank you." And they have to point out the gag - that there's no tv. He's just like "Oh, that's OK I don't watch much television anyway." So the host has to come in and be like "we thought you'd be upset."

Delirious - 4/4
I can't think of a similar type of film that comes close to this overlooked, unheralded takedown of fame chasers and their neuroses. This is a stunning picture about the escalation and self immolation of the fantasists that hunt for publicity in an all-or-nothing attempt at gaining or retaining an audience, a following and acceptance. Tom DiCillo is a name I had heard perhaps but definitely had no idea about and here he has created a work of fiction so concise, so accurate that I doubt I will ever forget him. In fact I should really be looking to experience more of his product because I was enthralled by "Delirious".
Steve Buscemi plays off Michael Pitt like mustard on a hot dog and he is glorious as a cheap, unrefined yet deliciously shameless little nobody of a paparazzo against Michael Pitt's beleaguered transient actor-wannabe with charisma pouring from his aura.
Nobody wants to know Steve, nobody knows but everybody wants Michael and what the world isn't aware of is the broken promises and unimaginable torments that the truly famous can expect to face when the parasites catch their scent.
This is a film about conversations that lead to calamity and misfortune that polishes to a golden shine. Maybe perceptions are best left unexplored and perhaps apathy has had it's day.

He and I are talking about it in his thread. I'm right there with you. The surge pricing, limiting showtimes and eliminating movies all together was the death knell.
I've read you can use the 2nd and 3rd movie options each week as an extra ticket for a guest. That's brilliant if true. I'll be getting the AMC pass next week.
Indeed. It's a bummer that they're not allowing members to watch "Mission Impossible: Fallout". Then again, whenever such a big film opens, I don't mind spending extra for IMAX / Dolby Cinema (which are included in AMC's A-List program). MoviePass was a lot of fun while it lasted.

The Psychotronic Man (1979) aka Revenge Of The Psychotronic Man
No review, just to say I bought this for the amazing name and DVD cover art. This film has lots of weird shit in it and for some reason it has an incredible theme tune.
It's about a middle aged hairdresser called Rocky who drinks hairdressers sterilising solution(or it may have been booze hidden in a hair product bottle) and goes on a bender. He then wakes up with the ability to fuck things up with his mind after some weird floaty stuff happens to his car in....a dream?
It looks like a drive-in movie and the lead actor is clearly 45 with a marvellous thick moustache.
For production trickery there is a fair amount of slowed and sped up footage, the odd cut and loop here and there but this isn't a steak, it's not even a burger or a hot dog. This movie is Vienna sausage at best and sometimes those little bastards will do in a pinch.

Don't Breathe - 4/4
Throws you every which way but loose, then when you think you finally are loose suddenly the ground opens up beneath you and you're back in the cellar.
This could have gone comically wrong in the wrong hands(I'm thinking of James Wan and Leigh Whannel here) but due to the strength of performance from Levy, Lang and Minnette and the commitment to character you never really pick holes in the plot. Or at least I didn't and that could also be due to the pace of the plot. It zips along but it's a streamlined film with no unnecessary flash, all of the substance is saved for the script, performances and the quality of the production. It reminds me of an HBO show the way it moves.

It's big and dumb but fun. People swim away from the shark. People then get eaten by shark. Sorry for the spoiler. Chomp. Chomp.

Action movie masterpiece, and one of the best action movies of all time. Tom Cruise is the greatest.

I think A Quiet Place is out on DVD today. I will buy it and review it later. I've looked forward to this one and now since I have seen Don't Breathe I am in the mood for quiet horror.
Loud horror is garbage. Screaming annoys me unless absolutely relatable. Like proximity to tiny spiders.
A Quiet Place is good -- I look forward to your thoughts.

Krasinski lucked out marrying Blunt. Good couple though.
Watched the new jurrasic world movie.
First bit was boring until Pratt showed up. After that i thought it was pretty good. Seems like i remember a lot of people saying it was shit but it wasnt bad. Definitely had some cliche bits but its a Hollywood blockbuster film so what do you expect?
6 out of 10 with 5.9 of it being all pratt.
Sleeping with Other People - Adorable.
They try not to sexualize Annie by giving her a complex character and a range of emotions.

Might be the best one yet. Cast was great all around. Lots of twists and turns. Great set pieces, one after the other. I had grown to love the franchise and this just solidified my admiration for the films.

There is one moment of ugly exposition that could have been handled a lot better. Spielberg' baddies are always far too wet, also. Just sopping wet pushovers. Good references, not sure kids or most adults would know the name Buckaroo Banzai let alone the suit but it's a definitely a feast for anyone into pop culture fantasies more than real life.

Are those the really low quality multiple-discs-per-film things?
I have a few of those from Vietnam and The Philippines of things like The Village or that dreadful Winona Ryder horror film and they are a curiosity if nothing else.

Yeah! They don't age well but I love the alternate cover art as opposed to the American home video releases. They're sitting in my old room along with my cassettes. I'll probably donate them to a library or just give them away to fans. When I was leaving for grad school, I digitized my entire (American) collection and shipped all the physical copies to a fan who really seemed like he enjoyed wrestling like I did when I was younger.

Moviepass #86 Mile 22 - 4/10 fight scenes with camera cuts that make Kevin Dunn look conservative, a storyline that was confusing at best but stupid at its worst. Wahlberg felt over dialogued and under actioned. And why the fuck do you get Ronda Rousey to go around shooting people and not fighting ? Still not the worst movie I've seen with MP BUT its bottom 5. Plus the ending clearly set up a sequel which I can only imagine will never get made but who knows.
Blackkklansman - 8/10
Good, both lighthearted and serious. Over two hours but doesn't feel like, never dull.
The Spy Who Humped Me - Hot garbage

Eyes Of My Mother sounds absolutely dreadful. This is the sort of film I actively avoid.
SPRING has Lou Pucci and that guy was wonderful in Thumbsucker, also the plot sounds a lot more entertaining.
The Endless sounds pretty great, I will definitely look for those two.

Eagle Vs Shark
I may have just seen the sweetest, most honestly incongruous comedy ever made. Too affected by it to review just now. I'm gonna take a nap and think about this uncontaminated fragment of the beautiful weird.
More people should make comedies based on their own personal idiosyncrasies.

Eagle Vs Shark - 4/4
This film feels like it has been built after a lot of acting workshops where the same characters develop into real people over the course of the studio sessions before they're just perfect for the big screen.
People have called this another Napoleon Dynamite but there is so much more to this than a vague similarity to an admittedly brilliant film. This is a bigger film, it has a third dimension in that we get a female perspective of a pathological, absurd charlatan. A ruined man who rejects the positives that the world offers him in preference for the elaborate yet incompetent deceit he has regaled himself and his band of onlookers with.
The heroine Lily is a mouse with no pizzazz. Assuredly a shrinking violet through our first introduction, then quite obviously a fantastic example of positivity against cynicism. She commands every major plot point and yet we feel like we are on somebody else's quest for much of the film.
This film very nearly made me cry, not a rare feat generally speaking these days but for a comedy with a potty mouth, a wicked sense of humour (of abundant laugh-out-loud moments and lines so consistently funny that surely three viewings will still yield a very respectable laugh ratio) and a heart of gold it is unusual. Especially since the scene that did it was an analogous stop motion animation about apples
In summary this is a quirky, irreverent film about some incredibly idiosyncratic people with an undercurrent of deep emotional issues. None of it is cheap, at least it doesn't feel that way to me. I feel like Taika Waititi and Loren Horsley must have really loved these characters. It's warming to see a film with this much attention to character behind it.
