Yep! One of the few scenes I remembered from the first time I saw it. Watching it in my thirties, Bateman's character certainly irked me a lot. Michael Cera on the other hand, his quirkiness and need to be honest with Juno even when he was anxious and afraid resonated with me.

And the acting in the film isnt bad for the record. The writing is the issue. Lisa Kudrow is good. Thomas Hayden Church has a real charisma about him.
But the writing bangs a drum that attempts say "puritanical sexual social stigmas are derp" from the exact same direction for 90 minutes. We arent exploring this topic as theme in varied and interesting ways. Its the one note being played until we've moved through the formulaic plot progression that we've walked through a million times.
Now im not one to scoff at formula but if youre a writer who's decided youre going to do a strict genre piece you would think with the structure on autopilot youd be free to put your creative energy into making memorable characters...or dialogue...or jokes...maybe some clever misdirection ..ya know...literally any effort whatsoever.

Brokeback Mountain (2005) - 7/10
I appreciated that it wasn't a fairy tale. It had a lot of warts. The film isn't afraid to show the relationship as selfish. Whether it be the quality of the work that suffers while they frolic gayly in the fields or it causes pain to their loved ones or themselves. It's the wanting that takes precedence over everything else.
Ultimately I think this is a film about love and how it can ruin you if you let it. None of these characters have free will. They're all slaves to love. The wife of Heath Leger's character goes on loving him. It forces her to leave him and years later confront him at Thanksgiving. Leger's 2nd girlfriend similarly sees him in a diner after he's presumably ghosted her and she's still reeling. None has agency in the wake of their love.
Conversely, Ann Hathaway's character is loveless. She's easily able to let Gyllenhaal's character go to Wyoming multiple times a year. It is of no consequence to her. Their relationship is a formality.
Having the premise be about 2 men in a hyper-masculine world allows us to explore that uniquely but I think this is very universal in a broader sense because it being about 2 men isn't exactly the point.
The film doesn't stop to moralize. It's a close-up of this relationship and it stays zoomed in on the micro and leaves the macro implications to you.
Then there's the question of Gyllenhaal's death. When Hathaway tells Ledger of his death she tells him, robotically, of how it happened. We are shown violent images of Gyllenhaal being beaten to death.
Is this Ledger's fears we see or is it the truth? We can't know of course because that *would* be moralizing. We have to ask ourselves.
As an aside, I did like the touch of Ledger finding his missing shirt, along with Gyllenhaal's, hidden in the closet. It's a bit on the nose, homos hiding the closet, but I dunno. Maybe too obvious of a metaphor to be called subtext.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008) - 6/10
Now here's a romcom to get bebind. Script is really punchy. Very quotable. A bunch of great bits. Funny gags. Primary issue is Segel. I love Jason Segel. He's great. But he isnt right as a leading man. Obviously its his material. Its not like he doesnt nail his scenes. But standing across from Bell, Kunis or even Brand he feels out of place. At the end of the day the film hinges on the idea that these girls would like to and do in fact fuck him. If you take his role and make it the B plot to another film suddenly the film would work better. Hes just not a leading man.
So either a recast or reworked as the B plot in some other movie...i think youd have an 8 out of 10. Or maybe just have him not cast across from 10s. Jason Segel tries to bang an 7 or a lonely 8. I dunno.
Really great line that will stick with me:
"Im sorry I'm not what we thought I'd be." I felt that.
I read somewhere that the breakup scene was inspired by a real one. Must've been "hella awkward" to relieve that trauma and be "vulnerable" on film like that.

Yeah i was listening to him on conan obrien needs a friend while i was working out a few weeks back and he was telling the story of the impetus of him writting the script. With any artistic endeavor truth is always what im looking for so it put this on my radar.
The film does have a lot authenticity. Its dramatized to melodramatic proportions of course. Its not a literal film its embellished to the point of absurdity. Its still true though
In an interview about his book Norm Macdonald said instead of writing facts he decided to write truth. Its a pretty insightful comment. Facts can be debated. Facts can be wrong. Or misremebered. But the truth of the moment. How it made you feel. How you perceived a moment. Thats real no matter how much you manipulate the details for comedic effect.
I think this is a very true film. And it comes across that way. You can easily empathize with Segel because, even at peak silliness, he doesnt come across as inauthentic for a single second. The film makes this wacky 3s company scenario in Hawaii but there's an emotional core that resonates really well.
I still dont buy Segal with these women specifically and on screen chemistry absolutely matters. But on the page this is a great script and on the screen there's a ton to like.

Norm's book was such a fun read.
I agree with your assessment of the movie. Segel comes across as genuine and likeable despite the plot being somewhat ho-hum and forgettable. I have the movie in my collection but I haven't felt the need to revisit it in a long time.
I rewatched "Jeff, Who Lives At Home" and while the plot was very uninspired and predictable, I really enjoyed the chemistry he had with Ed Helms.
And then his bromance with Paul Rudd in "I Love You, Man" was top notch. This interview where they're clearly baked was golden.

Antman - Quantummania - 6.5/10
In some ways, this is the best Ant-Man movie and in a lot of other ways, the worst Ant-Man movie. Kind of miss the small scope of the first two Ant-Man movies and it seems fitting that Ant-Man had bigger stakes then his first two considering he is an Avenger that saved the world. Paul Rudd is always great, and as stupid as he looked I enjoyed Modok in this because I was a big fan of the Hulu series, and not a fan of the generic evil scientist MODOK from the comics.
As of right now probably probably my fourth favorite MCU movie that's came out since Endgame, but that's not saying much.

Inherent Vice (2014) - 5/10
Now to be clear I'm giving this neutral rating more than an assessment. I spent the first act trying to figure out what I was watching. PTA films in a lot of ways aren't really meant to be digested in a single viewing so talking about them after that single sitting always feels like a faux pas.
After about 45 min I started to get a feel for what I was watching. That's about how long it took me to realize it was a comedy. I was meant to be laughing.
The film is like if you took Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and made Hunter S Thompson a detective. Like if, an admittedly less cool, The Dude was in a surrealist noir film.
Once I had that much I was able to suss out that most of what I'm seeing is indeed happening..well to an extent. It's surrealism for sure so how it visually plays out is more of an echo of the protagonist's drug-addled fever dream but it's occurring enough. There is one character, the 3rd person narrator, who I do think is mostly fictitious. She might actually be in one scene but that one scene I'm uncertain if it took place...anyways.
You probably see my dilemma here. I don't actually know much about what I saw. The characters storm into the picture and leave as suddenly. Information is given to you and you don't exactly know if it matters and there are moments when they're acting like you know things you're certain they haven't told you.
Now I think this is by design. Like a wild night out on the town being dragged along by a group of friends. Moments blurring past you. The real you and the stoned you tagging in and out of the driver's seat of your soul and not sharing the details between yourselves.
On the 1st screening this leaves this viewer not knowing what to say or think. What I do know is I enjoyed the characters and the actors and I wanted to see how the story unraveled itself and wanted to exist alongside these people for as long as they were on the screen.
In a year or so I'll watch this again and I'll read this post and I'll see if I get it then but for now...I had a good time.

I feel like I need to see this again maybe. Had an incredibly annoying theater experience that prob "ruined" the movie for me. Feels like I would have liked it better if I knew more about it going in / knew what to expect, which was sort of a bunch of loosely-intertwined scenes. Felt like I was "having trouble following the movie" because of being really distracted by people around me but the movie was kinda "supposed to be like that" I guess. Need to watch it again... there were a lot of "good parts" and feels like I would def enjoy it way more the 2nd time, and Joaquin Phoenix is the best.similar take here

I do think thats the joke in some way as im running it back in my head. A stoner detective film. Typically the details are everything. Here the details mean nothing hell the case barely means anything. So it devolves into a string of occurrences.
I went in knowing nothing. No premise. Nothing. And yeah i had a hard time tracking where we were let alone why we went there. I think a rewatch, with this context in mind, would let the humor shine through more.
I dunno. Thats a question future me will try to answer.

3 Billboards Outside of Ebbing Missouri (2017) - 9/10
Beautiful picture. Top notch acting. Top notch writing. Top not directing. Top notch score. If you are the type of personal who likes film im general watch this movie.
What an oustanding dive into anger. It doesnt attempt to make our lead into a hero either. She's in the wrong the whole way through. But the film doesnt attempt to solve anger or even insult us for having our anger.
Through out the film anger is passed from person to person. Its airborne. But it never finds justice. The target it rightfully should be seeking or even rhe target your pointing your anger out in that moment. It spreads like its sentiment agent of choas until its creeped inside everyone.
The wonderful juxtaposition of this against Harrelson's character really makes the film pop. He is initially, momentarily, angry at the billboards. He blows up at his doctor. But he finds a calmness that allows him to tell his family he loved them and give then some peace. And uses that clarity to start a new emotional pathogen but this time one of focus.
The film tries to make us utilize anger. And it doesnt even claim its necessarily for good. But if we have this the anger it shouldnt control us we should control it. Wrestle control of our lives back from the all consuming anger ridden despair.
Excellent film. Really exceptional.

Rockwells character is a great billboard, pun intended, for why cancel culture is a bad way to go. Rockwell plays a grade A piece of shit. A man deserving of revile. He's a moronic racist homphobe who abuses the power of the state according to his whims. But by the end of the film you're rooting for him. Because he's trying to be a better man. But the thing is to outside observer youd never know the difference between the before and after. But we do. We see it.
A hundred percent. It was quite the transition.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 - 3 and 1/4 stars out of 4
If this is, indeed, the last ride of the Guardians (at least this incarnation of them) they certainly go out with a bang instead of a whimper. Take everything you might love about these characters and the previous two films and crank it all up about 5 or so more notches and you'll get this movie.
Balancing the humor and drama is no small feat, especially with all of these characters and threads that need juggling. The film goes heavier than what we're used to, but it knows when to pull it back and let in some light-heartedness. I appreciate the villain not being some misunderstood tragic entity, as he leans more into someone who's bought into himself way too much and can't let go of the idea that his goal NEEDS to be accomplished. I actually feel kind of bad that he's stuck in here and not more of a major threat to the MCU as a whole in the same fashion as Thanos or Kang or Infinity Ultron.
Two other positives to mention are the arcs that come to a satisfying conclusion for some of the characters and the action is probably the best in any of the 3 films, most notably a fucking awesome hallway sequence near the climax that is just pure fun. To speak to the former, a lot of the enjoyment you're going to get from the story depends on how much you love Rocket, because it really is his story more than any of the other characters.
Overall, this film might be the thing to get Phase 5 in people's good graces after the rough start that was Quantumania. There really aren't any big twists or seeds that signal where we're going next. This is more about wrapping up journeys and giving us a proper send-off, despite what the two post-credits scenes depict. If you liked the first two films, I doubt you'd find much to hate here.

I actually feel like the "concept" has a lot of potential for a remake, but removing a lot of the more "problematic" elements. Though I guess in today's modern world it wouldn't just be the mentally challenged/handicap jokes that would be no bueno, but even the concept of a bunch of dudes lying to and tricking a braud into loving them would get "backlash". So I guess it will never get a remake/refresh.

Though I guess in today's modern world it wouldn't just be the mentally challenged/handicap jokes that would be no bueno, but even the concept of a bunch of dudes lying to and tricking a braud into loving them would get "backlash". So I guess it will never get a remake/refresh.
Also Favre

Guardians (of the Galaxy Vol.) 3 - 8.5/10
Really enjoyed it. Feel like it did a great job balancing everything and telling a pretty good story with one of Marvel's best villains to date. Top notch action, visuals, and great character moments for almost everyone. Feel like everyone had a "character arc" which is not an easy thing to do in an ensemble film. Not all of them were huge character arcs, sure, but better than them just "being there".
Was "surprised" at Adam Warlock having so little to do in the movie after being a "much hyped character debut" but again, even with being barely in it he did get a character arc (and technically got all the action going at the start so he was essential to the story).
The "hallway scene" that M-A-G mentioned was freaking sweet, gotta be one of the best action scenes in the entire MCU.
I have never "teared up" for a Marvel movie before, let alone twice... so this deserves recognition for that too.
Overall, very good. I might even watch it again, which I never do with Marvel movies anymore.
Watching Belfast today. I don't know much about "The Troubles". Will make for an interesting viewing.
Judi Dench made me cry at the end. I don't know what I was expecting from this film but I'm glad I watched it.
Trying to watch the second Shazam movie and there's zero cohesion between the kid portraying Billy and Levi. It's like they're two different people.
Levi is really bad so far
This movie had a few moments but it didn't live up to the hype of the first one.
Why the hell would you play Diana's theme song at a kid's funeral? It was a dead giveaway that Billy wasn't going to stay dead.

They had that problem in the first one too. They tried to solve it in the second by giving Billy very little screen time compared to the first.

Probably because the actor who played Billy went through a major growth spurt and so this time didn't just act more mature but looked it too. Another reason why they minimized his screen time.

Always gonna be the problem with doing a live action Shazam. Kid playing Billy is gonna grow and undermine the premise of kid turning into full grown adult.
Friend told me that Zachary Levi, Henry Cavill and Dwayne Johnson were essentially done and won't be a part of the DCEU. He also said that Joaquin Phoenix's Joker and Robert Pattinson's Batman won't be a part of the universe either. That confused me a bit since they're already doing a HBO limited series focusing on Colin Farrell's Penguin. What does that entail for John Cena's Peacemaker and the rest of the Suicide Squad :nono:

Ignoring Spider-Man, because im incapable of being objective about Spider-Man, it has the strongest emotional resonance as anything in the genre. Cap 2 is still probably my pick for the best MCU film (Cap2 is a top tier spy thriller even without the brand attachment,) but this is a fierce competitor on the merits of it as a standalone property.
I tend to evaluate the mcu films in regard to them as a serial since ultimately thats what they are but guardians 3 definitely stands as a very unique entry and will stand out from the pack long term i think.

Twenty five years ago my mates were raving about Akira and it was old then. I never got around to it. I suppose there are no more ways for me to ask people how good it is, they always say how good but I never care. I will watch it after I finish “The Mighty” yet again. Gangs of New York (2002) - 6/10
Over the years ive tried to watch this maybe a half a dozen times or so but the opening is so bad ive never managed to get through it. Ultimately i think this film is very uneven. Its acting ranges from excellent to laughable. Despite its scripts dialogue, theming, subtext and plot you have terrible cinematography and editing ruining what should be excellent scenes.
The opening action sequence is one of the worst edited and shot action scenes in a major motion picture made of its era or since. It peacocks itslef as if its giving you graphic bloody violence of the highest order but what its giving is not only fairly tame even compared to things Scorsese himself has given his audiences a dozen times over but it has some many hard jump cuts you could air on Monday night and think you're watching modern WWE.
Once that scene settles we jump in time and meet Leonardo DiCaprio's character who, like all the characters, is extremely well written and fairly interesting. This is the phase of Leo's career where he was just beginning to pull himself out of the teen heartthrob muck and try to mold himself into a serious A-list talent. And i respect his efforts here. His performance he would give today would improve this picture but he's not bad. What is bad is his accent. Sometimes Irish. Sometimes Boston. Sometimes its just Leo.
However jarring he is the trophy goes to Cameron Diaz who i truly hope was cast because she blew the casting director because otherwise whoever hired her to should be barred from whatever guild those cunts belong to. When she enters the film her lines are full ADR and not the good ADR that blends well with the sound caught the day of but instead that bad ADR where you can hear the empty room she's speaking in. I can only assume what she attempted to sell on set that day was such a mess there was no way they could use. And what a poor excuse for an irish accent she spewed out in the booth isnt exactly a winner either. And this is how we meet this character. Rough start. She isnt always terrible and sometimes she almost sounds authentic but, like a lot of the film, she's very uneven throughout the picture.
Now all that said its not like the acting is worth praise. That would be ridiculous because the acting is the best part of, again, this very uneven movie. John C Riley, Brenden Gleeson and (chiefly) Daniel Day-Lewis are exceptional. When any of these 3 are on screen you'll be captivated. They're great. Better than great.
As far as the story is concerned the late 2nd act to the credits really hooked me. First leg of the film i really struggled. I was really only holding on to Day-Lewis to get me to the finish line. Once the theme starting to expand and you could really see what the film is about, power on a societal level and the interplay of that against the backdrop of a budding democracy (and allegorically that subtextually juxtaposed against the political climate of the then present-day,) the film really finds its footing and manages to end with a voice thats trying to convey something if youre willing to unpack it all.
But there's the rub. You've gotta sit through at least an act and half begging the film to have not wasted your time. The actors, even the bad ones tbf, showed up. They're all doing their damndest to get something out of this material. Frankly though its a bit of a mess. When it's nailing it i liked it but after 6+ failed attempts to make it through this movie i can safely say I'll never watch it again and i think it's Scorsese's weakest film ive seen.

How would it even be a disaster bro?
Ant Man replaces Ironman, John Snow replaces Captain America, Alan Tudyk can be somebody too and round it out with Nathan Fillion and any attractive woman.
There you have it, the new Avengers.
Alan Tudyk's character would have the torso of a man and the lovely legs of a woman and possibly the vagina too, but you'd never really know with a PG13 movie.
They could have him constantly putting big cucumbers in his purse though, just to give you an inkling.
Nathan Fillion would have a camel's hump and big purple tits and the woman would probably be invisible or something.
They'd all spend all of their time saving her because she was so lame.

Babylon (2022) - 7/10
I enjoyed this a lot more than i thought i would. Damien Chazelle's La La Land is a top 10 movie for me but the previews for this didn't hook me. The marketing was based on the first 20-30 min of the picture which is set during a lavish party of the highest depravity. It's an important sequence but the film covers a ton of ground and this marketing does a terrible job encapsulating what the film is.
The film is set in the 20s/30s and follows the transition of Hollywood from silent film to Talkies and the human cost of that cultural shift. At least aesthetically. The film is not truly set in the past its about right now and the current shift into the new new hollywood. It's in that regarf that Brad Pitts' character allows him to give a very interesting performance as he plays a silent star who boldy champions and pursues the advancement but is struggling to survive in this new landscape.
This struggle, as theaters are dying off and the old new hollywood shrinks away into obscurity, is explored through 4 main characters from multiple perspectives, all of which have echoes into the present day.
The final sequence aims to paint this is a glorious tradition that paved the path for generations of wonderul memories using a sizzle cut of great film scenes from the 50s on up. Implication is that this has happened before and led to great things.i find that to be far too optimistic. The loss of the home video format has already fundamentally altered the economic model of the hollywood studios and losing the theater model will do them in completely.
The real champion of this picture is the editing. The film spends a lot of its run time moving at a breakneck pace that really serves to demonstrate the chaos of the world these characters are in
The cinematography is no slouch here though either. There are some very fun oners and some scenes that are framed with a really great eye. The score is another big character in the movie and i really enjoyed the heavy brass pieces. Also, I should give some praise to Margo Robbie and Toby McGuire who i think give memorable performances.
As a whole this is a nice package. Everything was thoughtfully put together at every level of production.im certainly more pessimistic than the script is but i wasn't expecting much from this and was pleasantly surprised.

This film brings every major player of today into one giant ensemble and some stars of yesteryear as well. No wonder its trash.
Film meanders through long directionless scene after scene and after wasting your time youll be rewarded with a scene where some kind character will enter and give you exposition that i guess they didnt have time to get to during those scenes where nothing interesting happened.
And the cast.. the principle cast is surprisingly poor. I cant imagine there was any chemistry readings during the casting. Bale, Robbie and Washington have no chemistry amongst one another by any pairing of them you muster. This hurts Robbie and Washington the most. Not only do i not believe they love each other im not certain they know each other.
The movie has nothing interesting to say and nothing interesting to do. Not textually or subtextually. Terrible script and the cast (and casting) cant save it.
I did enjoy Mike Myers and Michael Shannon playing a pair of intelligence agents who in their private time are ornithological enthusiasts.
The first film ive ever seen that makes me wish the nazis had won. if they had at least id have spared these 2 hours.

A crime drama with absolutely no romance, great realism in the performances and a truly devastating story about the machinations, motivations and mistakes that accompany organised and disorganised crime. “Buck And The Preacher” - 3.5/4
One of the very few Westerns to appropriately treat African American perceptions in the post-Abolition world. Sidney Poitier directs and stars alongside Harry Belafonte and it is a marvellous piece of movie magic that seems to have been critically overlooked and somewhat forgotten by the public.
I loved every minute of it and while it does have its issues, it’s a perfect companion piece to “The Scalphunters” in that it refuses to patronise the viewer or the subject at the heart of the film. It almost defies genre in the way it flies between drama and farce but it is too grounded in seriousness to be accused of being more than a dramatic anti-western with some fine comic relief to keep you sane while watching.
Harry Belafonte is extremely likeable in this film, and it made me realise that I need to dig into his filmography for more. Sidney Poitier must have been proud of directing this and probably quite disappointed with the lack of recognition it received given how well crafted it is across the board.
I highly recommend this film.

“Emperor Of The North Pole” - 3/4
No it’s not about the North Pole, it’s about hoboes riding the rails for free and the train conductor who takes personal offence to it.
Lee Marvin plays top hobo, Borgnine plays the conductor who kills hoboes with a fucking hammer!
This is objectively an insane film even for an anti-establishment story. Keith Carradine plays a young hobo who doesn’t quite get the gist or the point, so it’s not just a hard action drama it is a proper story actually inspired by Jack London’s time hoboeing with “A-No-1” some famous hobo in real life. I doubt they did anything that they do in this film but man is the action tense.
I thoroughly enjoyed it as a weird, random excursion into unfamiliar territory that immediately plunged into brutal violence and sadism. Ernest Borgnine and Lee Marvin are too good to look ridiculous even if they should.
Watch this film, it’s bloody nuts.

“The Swimmer” is some oddly packaged brilliance. A film about a man who swims through privately owned pools on his way home… like he’s creating a map home through pools.
Psychologically there is something wrong with the hero, he’s swimming away from his past or swimming towards the truth… it feels like it’s too smart for its own good and it probably is. A European idea but with American execution.

Great ugliness exists in the reactions of this films incidental characters towards the protagonist. He must be a bad man to some degree, a bad man with a fucked up past that money and swimming pools and booze have hidden him from for years.

I feel a lot like I’m watching a Jodorowsky film with all of the symbolism replaced with literal equivalents or a French film that wasn’t too stuck up it’s own arse. This is a very fine example of Hollywood Philosophy, because it stamps the message on your head and then dares to tell you it used the wrong stamp on purpose.
Infuriatingly enjoyable, transparently philosophical and Burt Lancaster tells middle aged Joan Rivers she has nice hair.

The Swimmer (1968)
This is the fucking stupidest movie ever... Some guy decides he wants to "swim home" by going in various ppl's backyard pools, except he's like some sex pest trying to rape the women. This thing sucks
I found this without searching, just scrolling back through the thread and it so happens somebody else has seen it.
Ossman this is a shameful review. I hope you were just in a bad mood. This film does not venerate its protagonist, it creates a path of opportunity for him to remember his numerous massive indiscretions and debts. It is almost a psychological thriller in that you just keep watching things get worse until the realisation sets in and all is doomed. He is a bad guy who has no idea about it, it is a fucking masterpiece.

He's 'critical' of aspects of identity politics in TV and film ('the message'), but overall he is fair; I don't think he qualifies as a grifter.
While I use "grift" loosely, he's definitely catering to a certain segment. To suggest that he's unbiased and fair is baloney.
Here's a good example of why he attracts certain individuals. Why is it so difficult for people to understand that not everything is being marketed towards them...this show didn't "rock my world" but it has its place. Judging it based on the trailer alone is a stretch. This isn't smart or engaging. It was the popular thing to do at the time. He's merely a spoke in the giant grifter wheel.

He does sometimes base his videos on trailers rather than wait until the show/film has been released, though later on he usually does a follow up or covers things in his super chats and other vids. Actually, he just released a video based upon the early reviews of Indiana Jones 5, rather than wait until seeing it in the cinema. Therefore, in some regards, he does do some shows/films a disservice.
Even though he does attract the anti-woke people (I probably fall into that category), he seems more disappointed than anything else by how popular franchises/shows/etc have been damaged or downright ruined by lacklustre talent and poor creative choices, coming from a position of both a fan and an actual published writer, who knows (or should know) more about writing interesting characters and logical character development and compelling/smart storylines.

Which is why calling him "fair" is wrong.
Not every character deserves a strong and compelling backstory. As a pro-wrestling fan, you understand that R-Truth and Lesnar aren't equals. Doesn't mean they cannot coexist in the same space. They both bring different things to the table. I don't care for the women's tag division in WWE. But I understand that some young girl must be heavily invested in the division's storyline and related drama. Not everything is catered to us.

Miller's Crossing (1990) - 8/10
A hard film to rate. I really really enjoyed this but it does feel like its something *I* would enjoy more than *people* would enjoy. The Coen Brothers always write smart scripts and this one is definitely up there near the top of their pile, but maybe its too smart for its own good
The film spends the first act announcing its characters through well written dialogue but doesnt actually allow us to meet manyof the people until later. Or we meet a character once, memorably in all fairness, and that character returns not in personbut in prose later.
And thats kinda the issue if i dare to call it an issue. The film is demanding that you keep up and its probably a big ask for most viewers.
The scenes themselves are brilliantly performed and the dialogue wont let you down but following who are the players and what the throughline is could be tricky and on some level that has to be a mark against the script.
Now personally i really enjoyed watching all these planets orbit around one another and the climax was very very satisfying.
Another thing i enjoyed that i could easily call a negative is the film exists as a meta comedy against the genre of the ganster films of the 30s and 40s. Its never completely serious. The major beats of the script played straight could absolutely work but they play every scene very subtly as a mockery. And i really loved it. But i wonder if that this film is made for my sensibilities and if i recommended it to someone else howd they think about it.
My enjoyment was at minimum a 9/10. But i really wonder if this film is leaving a lot on the table. That if say Scorsese made this film instead if it would be an all time classic. I dunno. I really liked it though.

Really good. Probably PTAs most straightforward piece but still really deep and thoughtful. The ending spells out what its driving unlike most of his films but i didnt find it anyless satisfying for it. Which isnt to say there isnt ambiguity or room from multivalent interpretations. 127 Hours (2010) - 7/10
This being based on a pretty famous story this is all going to be a spoiler since the film assumes you know the story.
When he gets stuck the initial claustrophobia is really well done. You can easily feel as trapped as he is. Everything after until the climax is mostly just to make a movie happen. In truth this shouldve been a 45min short film. Still its interesting despite it being extraneous.
The amputation i had been told was especially harrowing and honestly i felt the way it was shot and edited was all wrong. Its cut heavy using split screen and "internal" shots of the knife working through his arm. This all is immersion breaking. The film builds to this major moment and i dont think it resonates like it should. It doesnt ruin the film though.
What does resonate is when he finds help. There's an instant catharsis that occurs and inan innstant all the tension is let out of the film in a way that really hits. His isolation is ended and for a breif moment you appreciate humanity.
Watching "That Girl in Yellow Boots" this afternoon because life isn't depressing enough. I feel crushed.

Was really entertaining. Kind of grounded the action a little bit from "super ridiculous, I'm SURE physics doesn't work that way" to "ridiculous, but physics might work that way? Probably not"
Jason Mamoa is great in his villain role and easily steals the movie.
Only drawback is it just ending... I know that it is was already revealed to be split into two (now three) movies, but at least give it a kind of "episodic" arc rather than just cutting off the action/plot at a high point.

Sisu 6.5 or 7/10
I can't really decide on the rating. A film very much in the vein of 1970s exploitation films, centring around a Finnish miner/ex-army commander's attempts to retrieve his gold, which has been stolen from him by a company of German soldiers as they flee from Lapland in Finland to Norway, in the latter stages of WWII.
Plenty of gratuitous and gory violence, though perhaps not as much I was expecting. At around 90 mins, it does not out stay its welcome.

And I didn't really like Momoa as the villain...he tried to be the Joker to Dom Toretto's Batman, but it seemed contrived.

Melancholia (2011) - 9/10
Its very difficult to write about a complex work moments after youve seen. Melancholia isnt as abstract as most of Lars von Triers filmography but its no less deep. The film uses verisimilitude to accent its dive into depression. First the back drop of a wedding and then larger with a planet growing closer to crashing into the eart.
Both highlight how depression feels in way ive not felt on screen. The wedding is what should be a time filled with boundless joy but Dunsts character has none. She tries, but its a lie and we can see that. As world comes to end we see the depression from an anxiety perspective. Both feel very genuine. Both are perfect representations of the condition. No one is realing from the death of a loved one. There isnt an event that causes the suffering they simply are are suffering.
All of this has a wonderful backdrop that serves to show us visually how wrong theyre feeling by having the world be beautiful. Many of the shots are beautiful. Everything is gorgeous and pristine. The characters, who are miserable, are surrounded by an idealic scenario.
The cast is really great and Dunst gives a performance that has a weightiness to it that screams authenticity. And id have to turn in my man card if i didnt say how great her tits look in the moon light. Stunningly beautiful. Her acting is better but it cant go unsaid.
Lars von Tier has a challenging catalog but this is definitely his most commercial work and i think its a film thats near the top of his pile and thats a combination thats pretty rare.
The image of Kirsten Dunst just chilling in the grass is etched into my memory.

Invents a style of filmmaking complete with essential rules, proceeds to then never make one that obeys those idiotic rules. He probably tells people it was all a big joke now.

His most joyful film is about people pretending to be retarded. “The Idiots”… it’s trying too hard to be transgressive so it just comes off as pathetic rather than deplorable much like GG Allin. Lots of nudity of course.
I remember watching it as a teen when it was on Film 4 as part of their controversial foreign films season and I couldn’t believe what I was seeing not because it was incredible, but because even as a teenager stoned out of my tree it just seemed like a child’s effort to shock a bigger kid.
