Well, it was universally praised but you know, opinions.
Apocalypse Now, The Deer Hunter, Babel...the list goes on with critically praised movies that are actually shit, pretentious bollocks that have no point and rely on long tracking shots of countryside or some unrelated landscape because there's no fucking script!
That's one thing Arrival avoided, it showed you fuck all scenery and the script was horrendous so you know it existed.

Stuff your sorries in a sack and give 'em to someone who needs 'em
It's lazy pseudo philosophy and it annoys me to see it dressed up as some revelatory experience.
What blew you away about it? If it was the acting then fair enough but the story was laughably stupid, remorselessly cruel and about as insightful as one of Darren Aronofsky's shits.
psuedo philosophy? Well, it isn’t as bad as Lucy. That was garbage.
I tend to be vitriolic about films that cost me money and will never be played again.
My DVD/Blu Ray collection is massive and I resent "Arrival" taking up space in it.

Jumanji: 9/10 - Perfect family movie. I DETEST Jack Black, yet can admit he did an excellent job in the film. The Rock is The Rock, same goes for Kevin Hart. Never saw the original Jumanji, so I have nothing to base it off of other than the old one was about a board game, but as a stand-alone film it is great.
Gonna watch this soon.
Guardians of the Galaxy - 7/10. Not as good as Vol 2 but still really good. Can't wait for 3.

Lucy wasn't bad because it was pseudo philosophy, Lucy was bad because it made no sense and Scarlett Johansson is shockingly limited as an actress.
I couldn't even finish watching Lucy it was so bad. I think I spent the first 45 minutes intermittently fast forwarding portions too.

I don't think anybody went into it with expectation of depth.
I worry about people that can't identify a bad performance from a good one. Literally anybody could have improved that film just by not having Scarlett Johansson's stupid face. She looks like she's confused all the time, even when she's supposed to look intense she just looks like she's struggling to read slightly above her level.
While her face didn't live up to expectations her boobs played their part perfectly.

The scifi was broken for me. The premise of humans only using 10% of their brains is false and a film built around that kept me from suspending my disbelief. I tried to look past it but coundt. Film may have been fine but i was too biased to notice.

Alien is horror masquerading as sci fi, Aliens is action masquerading as sci fi. I prefer Alien because the alien is terrifying but the motivations of Ian Holm's Ash bring a waking nightmare into reality.
I think the continuity is pretty much gone at this point though and I'm far more keen on a reboot after an extended hiatus than any further sci-fi dream teams or Ridley Scott involvement.

I was actually thinking about it. For me, "6/10" represents that the movie wasn't bad or even average. It was definitely good but not amazing...if that makes any sense.
Let me try to redo them

Lethal Weapon - 4/10 (My expectations were quite low. I guess I conditioned myself to enjoy it in a bubble)
O Brother, Where Art Thou? - 5/10 (Typical Coen Brothers production. I would've enjoyed it a lot more if I wasn't already sick of Vishal Bharadwaj whose films have similar character presentation and plot progression)

I don't think the release dates have much to do with it, these films all stand up very well aesthetically. Arguably Lethal Weapon looks dated in an obvious way and that's mostly due to the film being set within living memory where the mullet was in style and women wore absurdly formless, high waisted jeans.
I'm always surprised when I find someone who's sensibilities are so different to mine when it comes to films.
I tend to reserve ratings of 5 and under for films that annoy or anger me in some way. A rating of 5 or lower is just a varying degree of shit to me, so I find it hard to reconcile Dave's seemingly innocuous and inoffensive comments with his oddly low scores. Especially the Lethal Weapon one. If I find a film to be 4/10 I slag it right off before I mention anything it did right.

That’s because it was shot on 35mm film via Panavision Millennium XL2 and similar cameras.
People don’t realize how better films look when they’re shot on film. I’m glad certain franchises like Star Wars, Star Trek, DC etc. are committed to the medium. Not to mention Nolan and Tarantino who have special screenings for film projection.

Gods and Generals: 0/4 Stars
I watched the world's worst retelling of the American Civil War last night and by the looks of it there was a bit of cash behind it too. Robert Duvall and Stephen Lang should be thoroughly ashamed of this time in their lives...when a paycheck meant more to them than the abominable material with which they were working.
Politically speaking this film was fucking mental. Every black character in it (I think there were three) gets trotted out in some gross display of friendship and assistance to the noble confederate cause and in one particularly egregious instance they have Frankie Faison add an "s" to the end of his words to show how provincially charming(ignorant) and contented(grateful under white authority) he is. I think the message is supposed to be that if you are in the south long enough a kindly black slave will come and recite passages from the bible to you in thanks for the rewards the South has provided him.
It's all pretty gross.
Aside from the so-obvious-it's-just-fucking-nuts history rewrites we also get long periods of running. I mean lots of it. Running or marching on great big fields for extended periods of time. sure there's smoke and the odd crack and flash of suspiciously shoddy CGI gunfire but it's mostly just long shots of people marching followed by slightly closer shots of people marching. Then perhaps a bit of running and finally lots of lying down or standing up as two opposing armies stand 50 yards apart and blast hell out of each other for however long it takes until the quota of melodramatic camp has been squawked away by their badly written minor characters.
There's a fucking amazing bit where the union Irish and the confederate Irish just cry at each other as they get blasted to bits.
"They've been misled to their fates" says one of them.
I nearly pissed myself.
Other highlights include Jeff Daniels clearly being swayed into this awful tripe with the promise of a heroic supporting role and his constant running forward, light aluminium cavalry sabre in hand as he intermittently screams "double time lads!" and slows down to scream it some more with his back to the war.
Stephen Lang plays the infamous Stonewall Jackson with all the aplomb of a constipation turd hitting the toilet bowl, I'm not sure why he's even in it at all. He just runs about saying religious things and being the recipient of a humble slave's benevolence.
He also gets shot in the hand first thing in the war like a complete dickhead for waving his arms around to signal kick off.
It's not a football match Stonewall.
I have decided to use Roger Ebert's 4 star rating's system from now on. I think it's easier to show approval/disapproval this way. I was too sparing in my below 5/10 reviews.

This was really bad. It was like Scarface but with an even dafter accent, Sean Penn with a novelty Jew-fro and John Leguizamo as the wettest baddie in a film since Taylor Negron's intentionally ludicrous turn in The Last Boy Scout. How come people rated Brian De Palma anyway? From what I have seen it's all camp gangster flicks about hispanic people using horrendous colour schemes in the backdrop.
The Untouchables was alright though.

Moviepass #37 Winchester 6/10 not really scary..and
They don't actually mention it in the movie (it gets mentioned in text at the end) But since the Dr. Examination of Sarah Winchester took place between 4/13 and 4/19 1906 you can infer that everything that happens at the end is the result of the 1906 SF Earthquake on 4/18...which I figured out earlier in the movie when the date was given since I remember the date from going to SF a couple years ago.
Also
It rips off the 6th Sense sort of. The doctor can see the ghosts of the dead people because he was dead forv3 minutes due to getting shot with a Winchester ruffle himself-

Here's what Wiki has to say about it:
Upon its premiere at the 2013 Cannes Festival, a report from the French Audiovisual and Cinematographic Union (Syndicat des professionnels de l'industrie de l'audiovisuel et du cinéma) criticised the working conditions from which the crew suffered. According to the report, members of the crew said the production occurred in a "heavy" atmosphere with behaviour close to "moral harassment", which led some members of the crew and workers to quit.[4] Further criticism targeted disrupted working patterns and salaries.[35] Technicians accused director Abdellatif Kechiche of harassment, unpaid overtime and violations of labour laws.[36]
In September 2013, the two main actresses, Léa Seydoux and Adèle Exarchopoulos, also complained about Kechiche's behaviour during the shooting. They described the experience as "horrible", and said they would not work with him again.[37] Exarchopoloulos later said about the rift: "No, it was real, but it was not as big as it looks. For me, a shoot is a human adventure, and in every adventure you have some conflict."[38] In an interview in January 2014, Seydoux clarified: "I'm still very happy with this film. It was hard to film it and maybe people think I was complaining and being spoilt, but that's not it. I just said it was hard. The truth is it was extremely hard but that's OK. I don't mind that it was hard. I like to be tested. Life is much harder. He's a very honest director and I love his cinema. I really like him as a director. The way he treats us? So what!"
Sounds like they bonded over sheer hatred of the director.

Snowpiercer - 2/4 stars
I said in another thread that this film has the skeleton of a masterpiece but the fleshing out is so badly done that it becomes almost ridiculous.
I'm not sure why Tilda Swinton is in it, she's absolutely horrendous. That may well be the worst character in the history of film…a purposefully disdainful, repulsive performance that puts forks on china and nails on a blackboard to shame. There was no reason to have cut-rate Terry Gilliam rip-offs in there…it just destroys the credibility entirely.
Don't get me started on the logistics of a train track that connects every railway around the world either…or the preposterous concept of a train that pierces snow and ice drifts, rocks from side to side and yet remains speeding round the side of a goddamn mountain.
Alison Pill…just no.
I dunno what to say besides this: Snowpiercer is a mediocre film that could have been absolutely incredible. I was actually prepared to accept the round the world train track until they showed the fucking thing bouncing around like a Skalectric on amphetamines.
Ed Harris should have carried this film but they didn't let him. Everything it could have been got shoved out in favour of really weird teeth and little kids with fucked up accents.
Chris Evans might as well not have been in it really. His part could have been played by absolutely anybody.

To Live And Die In LA - 3.5/4 Stars
You had me at William Friedkin, William Petersen and Willem Dafoe.
This was the antidote to Snowpiercer. A funky little 80's number with great use of colour indoors. It reminded me a bit of Manhunter in parts though not nearly as intense in the visual.
I love any film that makes the story the star and this film did exactly that. You get some excellent performances but nothing too big and absolutely nothing to overshadow the plot. It seemed oddly realistic in moments that had a side of silliness…William Petersen seems to lose every fight he is in for example and no attempt is made to have him seem like a genuine tough guy or even a particularly streetwise or smart cop.
I think the message is that some people just have no idea when they are in over their heads and some people tend to bring that situation upon themselves.
The Cloverfield Paradox - 6/10
Some good visuals and some not-so-good pacing. It does work as a prequel to the 1st film - but sometimes feels slightly forced in that regard, in that tying it to the Cloverfield universe seems like it was added to the script - but not there initially. It's a better movie than most people will probably give it credit for.

A well paced retelling of the man's life and achievements though conspicuously devoid of any mention of his unsavoury bedtime temptations via the naked flesh of his young female kin.
I suppose if you become the face of a nation you can sleep with all the grand daughters you like.
Ben Kingsley was born for the role, obviously. It was nice to see him as a young stage actor brought into the motion picture industry and immediately successful in a role that he will always be remembered for.
Besides that the film has only one perfect scene, but it may be the most powerful scene I can remember having seen in my life. You'll know the scene if you have seen the movie, it involves Edward Fox standing before a court and it is faultlessly heartbreaking.

The Beaver - 3.5/4 stars
I gained another level of respect for Jody Foster after seeing this. More as a director than an actress - her performance was excellent however I was already a pretty big fan so it was great to see that this overlooked piece of pub trivia was actually something wonderful.
I think if anybody else had done this it would have just been bizarre but given the parallels with Mel Gibson's publicly played out fall from grace it seems to work very effectively off the back of that connection. I know it bombed but the story is a lot more believable than it looks from the outside. Once you open the door you are in the home of a desperately ill man who is both acutely aware that something is wrong and yet who cannot do anything to keep himself from self destruction besides talk through a Beaver puppet.
It sounds ridiculous and immediately looks so but it instantly becomes clear that you are going to spend the rest of this time with your eyes trained on the man holding the Beaver's face because there are several layers to a performance going on at the same time there (puppet at face value, puppet's intrinsic meaning and Mel's repression all combined) and it's something to see Mel Gibson take his acting into another level like that.
The main plot revolves around fitting his life back together around the puppet and the repercussions of this with his family. There is a sub plot involving Anton Yelchin playing the son and his interaction with a classmate played by Jennifer Lawrence where it's a little myriad of tropes that somehow avoid forming an overly obvious teenage love story.
I got a lot out of this film and I will be rewatching it very soon. I feel as though the film Ted may have ripped some of it off for the fight scene in the original Ted. The fight scene in this is brutal, not funny and should be seen as a precursor to the inevitable finale.
A great cast and what must be one of Mel Gibson's best performances.

Creative approach to getting a sequel out of it. The cast has great chemistry and the plot is simple but fun. Kevin Hart and the Rock were made for each other.

The best part in a film supposedly about Vietnam but using the central theme to Hearts Of Darkness is the fact that the only decent line in Brando's flaccid, insipid and tragically overrated "improvised" performance was a line stolen verbatim from Hearts Of Darkness itself.
The whole film is a lie and it seems to survive as much off the horrendous production stories as it does the film.
Overall I don't understand all the praise it got, but there were some memorable for sure.
Also, I laugh every fucking time when I think about how they think they were gonna get handsome brando but got a fat, balding man. It's why all his scenes are in the dark. Also heard he refused to leave the tent so there's that.
Same as they were filmimg Moraue. HE found a random ice bucket and refused to take if off. And the midget idea was his also. "If I'm not getting a funny midget I'm not working".

Moreau was two actors trying to outdo each other in terms of demands, a bad director who was way off the pace and never would catch up and a studio that never had real faith in the project.
Richard Stanley is a penis anyway so it's no great loss.
And Coppola is an idiot. Like I mentioned, expected a handsome young Brando and Brando was in his 50s already and was famous for subtance abuse.

Francis Ford Coppola is easily the most critically beloved director with the worst resume in film history. Godfather 1 is a perfect film, Godfather 2 is regularly cited as the first perfect sequel... every film since then has ranged from mediocre to trash. I think Mario Puzo's story was going to become a great movie even if somebody else had directed it with their own cast.
America was ready for a hard organised crime adaptation and FFC was lucky enough to be there at the right time.
I might watch it in the future again. Some of the visuals were definitely remarkable. I don't want to form a strong opinion just yet.
I watched Ocean's Eleven in English for the first time since it's release. What a time capsule...back when Hollywood felt big and ze star cast

Sodeberg has made one film I love, one I liked a lot and one I didn't mind but he is another massively overrated director.
Last film i saw for the first time was star wars episode 8, the last jedi.

Solaris - 3.5/4
Psychologically horrifying. This is one of those films that pushes my thoughts into existential turmoil and give me a horrible lead-filled-butterflies-in-tumble-dryer feeling. You know that feeling of total loss of equilibrium when you lie on your back and stare at the sky and suddenly you're falling forever?
That's what this film does to me. It does it in a good way though, as with lying down I know I can stand up again, I know that Solaris is only 94 minutes long.
Superb performances from the four main actors, Viola Davis in particular.
This is also one of George Clooney's most believable parts. He should play haunted characters more often, he's get an Oscar nod in an original performance like this nowadays.

Small Faces 3/4 - A funnier, more genuine take on lower income Scottish home life in the 90's than Trainspotting. There are even a couple of likeable characters who's flaws make them more accessible rather than repugnant. This is a good counterpoint to the tedium of the excess that an Irvine Welsh story tends to go for.
I picked up a heap of films for dirt cheap the other day too so I finally have a copy of Raging Bull and Angel Heart to get around to. I could never be arsed with either of them but fuck it, for 50p you can't complain.

https://bossip.com/1624835/editorial-bruce-willis-death-wish-movie-is-nra-propaganda-made-to-get-black-people-killed/
a commercial for buying guns and using them on black people in the name of fictionalized fears based on centuries of white supremacists portrayal of said people. I don’t care what Eli Roth or Bruce Willis say the movie is about, it’s about a time-honored American tradition of arming white men with weapons to kill black people. It’s a cinematic portrayal of the NRA’s blatant racism.
Death Wish will probably bomb, especially under the ecliptic power of Black Panther, but any person who lays eyes on the movie is one too many. Because the film wasn’t just made to celebrate white anti-black vigilanteism, it was made to encourage that violence. Movies like this shouldn’t be made.
This isn’t even a censorship debate, either, because censorship is about silencing work that is offensive. Death Wish isn’t offensive. It’s deadly. It is less a movie as it is an advertisement for racist violence. Not only should Death Wish not be supported, but we should have a list of everyone involved in the flick – black and white – and vow to never support any of them again.
Going to see it tonight lol. I should have expected as much though

The Squid And The Whale - 2.5/4
As much as I love Jeff Daniels he is handicapped by a script that is so far up it's own cavernous arse that you can still hear the echo from his audition recital when the opening credits roll. I tend to love well scripted movies that explore interpersonal relationships from claustrophobic proximity but this was over cooked and left me with a restless anxiety that only a better film could cure.
Nebraska - 4/4
Having watched this immediately after The Squid And The Whale all I can do is point out that this is exactly how a screenplay about relationships, motivations and individuality should be done. It is as close to flawless as film gets and I am man enough to admit that it is above and beyond the possibility of my criticism. Nebraska may the best film I have ever seen. Bruce Dern's quietly passionate stoicism, his furious excitements, delusions and the tragic honesty of his craft appear so natural and truthful that it could almost pass for a documentary. Will Forte is wonderful, and without a trace of exaggeration I think he deserved the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for this work. This is the same Will Forte that made The Brothers Solomon and here he is stealing scenes from Stacy Keach and tee'ing up Bruce Dern for the role of his career. There are moments of true Shakespearean tragedy, laugh-til-you-turn-purple lines come and go like stealth missiles and the sheer warmth that radiates from the Nebraska on this screen is an example of its intelligence and heart.
I would expect no less from the man responsible for Sideways.
As Little Bill says in Unforgiven: "Hell I even thought I was dead, till I found out that I was just in Nebraska."

Thumbsucker - 4/4
Another perfect triumph in the exploration of interpersonal relationships genre.
I don't have the energy to describe how much I loved it because I am on a comedown from it. It's rare that an entire cast gets together and decides to be fucking fantastic but this lot did. I'm not just talking the main cast here either, there are top to bottom credit kudos deserved for this. Benjamin Bratt, Vince Vaughan and Keanu Reeves give three of the better small supporting cameos that excellent films need to have from big stars with small egos. The main cast of D'Onofrio, Swinton and Pucci are all heartwarming, heart breaking and so unstoppably fragile that you yearn to reach out and touch them and hug them. The supporting role Kelli Garner plays tears up the rule book and actually has some substance to it, much like the mother in Nebraska there is a unique style that treads the line between cold logic and cruelty wonderfully without demonising the character one bit.
Noah Baumbach should have watched Thumbsucker and Nebraska by now. Let's hope he learns something from them.

Downsizing - Dog shit movie. Started out good and then became :wtf: and then went totally off the rails. I usually like movies the subvert expectations, but this totally abandoned the satirical and inventive elements in favour of something maudlin and trash. 4/10
Detour (1945) - Good B-Noir... but it was like 68 minutes long and it felt like something was missing. Actress Ann Savage is cool, felt like a parody of a noir femme fatale.
Safe in Hell - Good pre-code Hollywood movie. Progressive for the early 30s I guess. It was about a prostitute that thinks she kills her rapist pimp and then hides out on an island and there is a corrupt police captain on the island. Anyway the pimp isn't dead but dies on the island and police captain finds out and says she can avoid the death penalty if she becomes his little slut... she chooses the death penalty but in the process reclaims her independence. I liked this movie.
Justice League - I always think I am going to hate these DC movies but they end up being weirdly entertaining. I felt like there was a lot of right decisions being made but everything is so rushed and a lot of the preceding material is flawed that everything feels slightly off, but in a kind of endearing way. The whole movie felt like Superman's CGI upper lip. 6/10

Tomb Raider: 8/10 - Much better than I expected. Given enough people see it and it makes money, I could see a second one being made for sure.
The Ritual 8/10
Netflix original movie. Really enjoyed this. Built up suspense really well. Great audio cues combined with a great setting made for a really tense atmosphere.
Awesome job building up to the reveal of the monster. Totally worth it too, because it's one of the coolest designs of a horror movie monster ever.
I agree with all of this.

I watched three overrated, obviously biased yet immensely entertaining documentaries this week:
All This Mayhem
Going Clear: Scientology And The Prison Of Belief
The Cove
I tried to watch Mommy Dead And Dearest but it was too bizarre. It made my toes itchy.

Was told it was a musical. Turned out to be a film about music. Very dissapointed. Not the films fault but my disappointment is what it is

I mean the 3rd act had like 3 numbers...but the characters were aware they were numbers...and the movie made me wait an hour for a number...i dunno.
I cried HARD at the end so its prob an 8/10

Moviepass #51 Unsane 7/10 purely on the story alone because the whole "lets see if I can shoot a movie on an iphone with no budget" idea was a disaster.

Wonder Woman - 4 out of 5
Felt way too much as just DC's take on the first Captain American film and the side kick being the best character prior to the last third of it. Enjoyed the final part of the film more than Captain America and when Wonder Woman actually shines the best because she finally gets the most attention.

Moviepass #52 Ready Player One - 9.99/10
I can't give it a 10 on principle
People are going to want to see it several times just to catch all the references.
Ready Player One - 7/10
It was cool but the last hour is super cheesy. Great visuals though.

My Five Wives 2/10 I finished it but boy did it drag. An almost dead Rodney should not be starring in an hour forty minute comedy in the 2000s. A lot of cringey humors and dragged out scenes. Didn't turn it off is about the best compliment I can give it. Few moments catch you off gaurd with a laugh

Moviepass #53 Tyler Perry's Acrimony - 4/10 there were more people in the theatre for this than when I went to Black Panther. Very stupid movie and the payoff for sitting through an hour and 45 minutes of setup is pitiful. I'm giving it 4 because there were at least a few funny moments that were probably unintentional

Droford sitting in a theater showing a Tyler Perry movie is the other end of the spectrum from a white house intern photo.
Imagine him sitting there, giggling and patting a guy to his right whispering "that's reallya guy in a fat suit!"

This wasn't one of those. It was supposed to be a serious movie. Came across more as funny but then its weird the whole laughing at people with mental illness. But anyway
Unsane - 5/10
Started off strong but then became a totally different, less interesting movie.

Recent Power Rangers flick:6/10
They did a lot of things I thought was really good. The film opened with a digital oner with the camera on a swivel in the cab of a truck for the duration of a high speed pursuit. Really brilliant shot.
The charatcers were fleshed out pretty wel really and had good chemestry with one another.
They werent afraid to play the theme either which i appreciate. Would have liked it better if they had hit it on the Megazord but i suspect they feared it would be too campy...it ran the risk of coming off that way but the theme plays well imo.
However with the exception of the opening chase sequence the action was all shot poorly and even worse was the choreography in general. Everything in the climax felt meaningless for the most part.
The plot also suffered. They took the time to develope the Rangers, which was the right choice, but ultimately the actually conflict of the film was underdeveloped and rushed. Again making the final 30 min of the movie feel out of place.
Alpha 5 was awful and I will never speak of this again.
Ultimately I'd prolly watch #2 for free like I did this one if they ever make it but im def not going to the theaters for this frachise and I'm glad I skipped this one when it was having its run.
