127 Hours - New Danny Boyle film; I usually find his stuff kind of hit or miss, but this was really enjoyable. James Franco stars as this outdoorsy guy who gets his arm trapped by a boulder while (who betta than) canyoning and then cuts his own arm off to escape. It's based on a true story and 90% of the movie is just Franco by himself and he does a great job carrying the film. Feels like a Boyle film with lots of gimmicky shots and plenty of energy. Intense film (apparently two people had panic attacks at Telluride) and the arm cutting scene is insane.

Second day at the Toronto Film Festival

Black Swan - Pretty much what I wanted it to be. It was similar to the Wrestler in many ways but also very different. Resembled the Wrestler in style and the way it observes an artists dedication to their craft, however this one play out more like a Polanski thriller with a bit of Cronenberg thrown in for good measure. I've never really been convinced by Portman as an actress but she was perfect as a frigid and neurotic ballerina, Kunis and Cassell were really good too. Can't wait to see this again.

Rabbit Hole - Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart play a married couple dealing with grief after their four year old son died. I was surprised to see a movie with such big actors play out so subtly, so it was different than I expected. Not entirely sure how I feel about it yet but for such sombre material it was surprisingly hilarious.

The Sleeping Beauty - Some shit Catherine Breillat film, saw it to kill time.

Meek's Cutoff- Loved this, plays out like a movie from Gus Van Sant's death trilogy, I even felt this was more successful. Despite being thin on plot, Reichart does a great job of conveying some big ideas about the frauds we put our faith in, and the silenced voice of the oppressed. Not a film for most.

Normally I don't see many famous people when I go to the festival but I saw a whole bunch of dumbass celebrities this time. Going again Saturday to see Never Let Me Go, and to hopefully get tickets to a 3D Werner Herzog documentary.

Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D 5/10

The story was boring. Just the next part. Not much more I can say about that. Music was ok. Action was fair. For my first 3D movie it was ok. Nothing wowing really dirt, bullets, blood, glass, and explosion in 3D. So if you are like should I go see it in 3D, I say you can pass and it want kill you.

On 3D I can honestly that when they previewed movies that are coming out. Tron was the only one that I think you'd be missing out if you don't see it in 3D.

Never Let Me Go - Huge fan of the book so take my mini review with a grain of salt. I thought the third act was perfect, it managed to be both very moving and horribly depressing. But I don't think the sullenness was required for the whole film, I would have liked more levity during the Hailsham and even some of the cottage sequences. I also found the relationships a little thin, not just between the three leads but between Kathy and Hailsham, I was scratching my head as to why they left out certain scenes that would have helped flesh out these relationships, it seemed like the melancholy of story was a greater priority to Romanek. Reminded me of the Road in some ways, faithful to book, directed with vision but still came up somewhat short. Probably give it a 7/10

The Promise. The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town - Damn, I like Springsteen but I did not know he had such a clear artistic vision. This was exceptional, very entertaining and even intimate as most of the documentary was old footage of the band recording in Bruce's farm house. Really enjoyed this. Saw this by myself and I felt like a bit of weirdo as 90% of the people at the screening were over 40.

Cave of Forgotten Dreams -The 3d was pretty hit or miss to me. It gave a nice depth to caves and it did feel like you were actually there, but it felt weird seeing 3D interviews and some of the handycam stuff gave me a headache. Even the exterior shots looked kinda weird to me, I dunno I just prefer watching films the "traditional" way I guess. The doc was good though, beautiful... even soothing at time and of course, full of hilarious Herzogian quirks. Wouldn't mind seeing it again in 2D.

J'ai tué ma mère - The guy (Xavier Dolan) who wrote, starred and directed this is only 21 so I hate his guts. But it was pretty good, it was about a gay kid who has an awful relationship with his bourgeois mother. Dolan wears his influences on his sleeve specifically, Wong Kar Wai and Jean Luc Godard and sometimes it felt like he was just mimicking these guys. He still has his own voice though and I enjoyed this. 8/10

Les amours imaginaires - The same dude's follow up film. Bit of a sophomore slump wit this one, it's about a gay guy and a straight woman who fall in love with the same dickhead. More stylish than his previous film and it was somewhat entertaining but it all felt kinda pointless.

Wolfman - 4/10

Benico Del Toro is an Englishman! STRIKE 1! The Wolfman is more vicious than Freddy Krueger (in the unrated version anyway)! STRIKE 2! Emily Blunt doesn't even remotely get undressed! STRIKE 3!

Honestly it was just a lot more gory and gruesome than I was expecting. The special effects weren't that bad though and I liked Anthony Hopkins. But honestly I couldnt for 5 seconds take Del Toro seriously in it even though if I take that bias out, he did an ok job I guess. The music is classic Danny Elfman though, which was good.

Cabin Fever 2 1/10 - worst movie Ive seen this year. Aside from having to see the fat naked girl, the one dude's super pus infected junk, I have a hard time understanding why they even bothered making this piece of shit after like 7 years. The original was like a solid 7..and its like they took everything that was good about it and shit all over it. The fact that the director wanted his name off the project (but didnt get his wish) after it was finished says a lot. Id go as far as to say that it was worse than the Donnie Darko sequel and thats coming from someone who has Donnie Darko as a top 5 movie and I was close to chucking things at the TV during it. Im trying to think about positives but there aren't any. In the original it took at least 2 days for them to get to the point to where they were throwing up blood and stuff like that and in this its less than a day since the contaminated water was delivered that same day.

About the only laugh I did get is that the guy in the Rabbit Suit from the original showed up again and got killed...

King of Kong 10/10

You will probably be happy to hear this:

Steve Wiebe the King Again

By Joe Dodson, 9/24/2010 2:40 AM
Steve Wiebe, the once King of Kong, is king again, having surpassed the vile Billy Mitchell's record. This marks the third time the world record in Donkey Kong has been set - in a year.
If you've seen the documentary King of Kong, you know what we're talking about. Way back in like the 80s, the self-parodic Billy Mitchell set the world record for Donkey Kong. He parlayed that into small time fame, and a huge ass ego.

His record stood for a decade at least, and then Steve Wiebe emerged from his garage to challenge and ultimately surpass Mitchell's record. This was the subject of King of Kong. Since then, the record was captured by Hank Chien, which was then topped by Mitchell, who was just beaten by Wiebe (http://www.twingalaxies.com/index.aspx?c=19&id=2264) all over again.

CGI blood is probably the worst thing to ever happen to special effects. Overuse of CGI is awful in general but this specifically is probably the worst offense.
If you're going to abuse the tool, at least abuse it on stuff you can't do practically. You can make realistic looking fake blood and squibs in your goddamn kitchen. It's the easiest thing ever.
I don't see how animating it is cheaper than doing it the old fashioned way, but it must be since they do it. It certainly can't be a creative choice because I can't imagine a person on earth who is dumb enough to think it looks better.

CGI in car chases instead of real stunts is another big piece of shit.

Great script, great editing... Jesse Eisenberg and Justin Timberlake are both on as their respective characters, but something about the film just feels slightly too rushed and a bit pushy. It was fun to watch, but borders between a comedy and a drama without ever pulling hard enough in one direction or the other. I also found the on-going storyline between Eisenberg and his dumped ex-girlfriend to be weak, thinly plotted and without any kind of real emotional pay-off at the end. Still, definitely worth a watch as it was a really interesting story.

Everything about it was a good movie, but it didn't greatly blow me away or anything. It's a fun film though, not for everyone though. It was definitely interesting to see how everything went down. Docks of New York - Pretty loose on plot but gorgeous to look at, in any other directors hands this probably would have been banal and stupid, but Von Sternberg made this both stylish and charming. 8/10

Uncle Boonmee Recalls his Past Lives - Won the Palm D'Or at this years Cannes film festival... I don't know this was really freaking weird. I knew what to expect because i've seen this dudes other films but i'm surprised there were not any walkouts. It's about a guy who is dying and there are weird shadowy monkey creatures with glowing red eyes, and at one point a fish performs cunnilingus on a woman. Slow and strange but the pretentious douchebag in me loved this.

Children of the Corn (on SyFy) 7 out of 10
King's book I liked a lot, but the SyFy movie like any other SyFy movie, had bad acting which lowered the quality of the movie. The kid sucked, I liked this one kid who said "He who walks behind the Wose" (Rose) better than the main evil kid.

True. But so far I have enjoyed all the graphic novel based movies I have seen. It is quickly becoming a genre much like "video game based movies".

the definition of genre is : A type or class

So calling graphic novel based films a genre or video game based movies a genre is accurate.

Wall Street Money Never Sleeps: 4/10
Started off good, I thought tying it in with the recent market crash was cool, and I was genuinely interested to see what happened with Gekko's character....but

The rest of the movie became so convoluted with the family angle, the stuff with Brolin's character, and the end stunk.

Seems like they had too many ideas to fit into this movie. Also, every character was pretty much a scumbag so there was no rooting interest.

In the first Wall Street, even though Bud was a greedy business guy, I felt like it was because he got caught up in Gekko's world. In this, I felt like Shia is just an asshole (plus its Shia, i cant stand him as it is)

Clash of the Titans (2009) - 6.5/10
Not as good as I had hoped or wanted it to be. The battles were pretty good, I liked the one esp against Medusa. But I didn't feel the epicness was there, and the ending was terrible. Both 'end bosses' battles were over in under 5 min, just felt rushed.

The Expendables - 7/10
Pretty good. I liked the stunts and fight scenes. The dialogue was better than most of the cheesy action bullshit than normal. Would've liked to have seen more of Lundgren and Arnie and Willis. And even though the battles at the end was good, there wasn't really an awesome action ending, but was still a decent film to watch.

Resident Evil: Afterlife - 7/10
Pretty good. But it took a while to get going. I was never actually bored and I do like the Resident Evil films. Was funny to see Wentworth Miller behind bars again. I am interested in the whole Umbrella thing and eager to see what they do with the next film. Where is Jill?

Nobody Knows - This is one of the most depressing movies i've seen in a long time. Based on a true story about four children that were abandoned by their mother. Maybe a little long and despite the unusual circumstances it felt like an honest depiction of childhood. It gets more harrowing as it goes on but despite being grim this was excellent.

Clash of the Titans - 6/10. More or less what I expected. It actually started out much better than I thought it would, but it quickly went downhill.

The production value of it was the biggest strength. They tried to apply Lord of the Rings sized moviemaking to the original story, but it didn't really work out.

The action was okay, but with a weak story and characters, it doesn't have much behind it. The thing that made the original enjoyable was more the stop-animation work of Ray Harryhausen than anything, and obviously that has been traded in for abundant CGI. Good effects, but not the type of monsters I want to see.

lol I honestly thought that was one of the best Star Trek movies. Didn't really care much about the humpback whales, but seeing them try to blend in to the 80s was hilarious.

First Contact and the JJ Abrams reboot were my favorites.
Wrath of Khan was good but not great. Maybe it was too hyped up for me. I too thought Search For Spock was equal to or better than it. Christopher Lloyd as a klingon was pretty mint, and so was that trick they pulled.

The rest kind of sucked.

Even though 6 was slow, I enjoyed it. The "spy" plot was kind of predictable I felt. I liked the overall story arc coming to a close (I mean, I THINK. There's like 80 more movies and god knows what they'll encompass). If the Star Trek series ended at 6, it would feel appropriate.

5 was good too. I enjoyed the discovery of "god". I wished there would have been a little more of a conclusion on what it was, how it got there, etc. I'm tired of having blue balls from Lost. Just tell me what shit is, damnit. Also, it sounded like the smoke monster at one point. Maybe that's how Jacob and MIB really started. As Sybok.

Anyway, it was good too. 4 was utter trash.

I really liked Generations. Even though it seemed like over half the movie took place in Nexus because it was real slow, I still enjoyed the story. I actually enjoyed the entire Nexus concept and didn't find it corny. Not a huge fan of the series but I could appreciate the dialogue between Piccard and Kirk and the wisdom they shared. I wonder how actual fans feel.

And I think First Contact is the best. Lots of action, lots or effects, an enjoyable story, and time-travel which has become a staple in this franchise. They just travel through time like it aint no thing.

I'll probably watch the last two on Monday.

"Hey, let's write a film about good looking people with some pretty tragic problems and then throw in an even more ridiculous/borderline insulting one completely out of nowhere for no reason whatsoever." I suppose maybe some people didn't like it because it didn't have a plot. But I thought that worked since it was just an examination of a particular group of soldiers and life at war. The sequences were all top notch and the suspense was brilliant. I thought it was entertaining as hell.

I didn't think the main guy really worked. The tone suggested it was to be a realistic film about Iraq, but that guy would have been out the first time he jeopardized himself. I realize that if you take away that element of his character you're just left with a pretty boring movie about a by the book diffuser, but maybe the Iraq war just isn't "sexy" enough to make a good movie about.

Due Date: 6/10

A wash. Though it has a few memorable parts, the thick of the movie is far from laugh out loud funny, struggling for even a chuckle or two. Robert Downey Jr is utterly wasted here and acts as if he knows it throughout the entire movie. The film is more like a bunch of wacky situation strung together on a string than a series of unfortunate accidents that could realistically happen - this movie is all by the numbers. Galifinakis is great here, but the movie rests far too much of its successes on the idea that people will laugh continuously over a flamboyant man-child and his ugly dog to save this film. Don't watch it - wait for the DVD.

Dear Zachary - GO WATCH THIS NOW.

For a documentary like this, it's hard to truly give it a rating out of 10 in the same vein we all have rated movies in the past. This is an extremely powerful movie about a family whose son is murdered. The son, was a well liked man in his late 20's just beginning his career as a doctor. He comes off as the type of man who everyone loves and considers their best friend. He was murdered by his ex-girlfriend. It comes out that his ex was pregnant. She flees to her hometown in Canada. The parents of the victim move out there to begin the process of getting custody of their grandchild.

The film was made by the victims close friend as a way for Zachary, the child to have a sense of who his father was. He goes around the US interviewing everyone the victim has touched in is life, ending up with the Grandparents in Canada. The film is an emotional rollercoaster. It's almost guaranteed the toughest of toughest guys will cry. I really hope that if you read this, you check out this movie. It's the type of movie that will be on your mind for weeks and in some way impact your life.

Expendables - 5/5

As fucking as this is, a sequel where "Mr. Church" is the villain, and Van Damme finally joins, and they're trying to get Ray Park, Mr T, Hulk Hogan, Dwayne Johnson, and Vin Diesel involved sounds too good to be real. And if I can read Stallone's mind well enough; if this movie was a Justice League of action heroes, Expendables 2 will be JLA vs Avengers. A fuckin battle royal of action guys. I can't wait.

The Last Air Bender - 3/5

I can't detail what I dislike about the movie without sounding like a geeky child-boy again so on a positive note: the movie improves in the second half, the effects are stunning, and I like the cast for the most part. Rather not get into what I find to be negatives now. As expected, this movie isn't nearly the train wreck people made it out to be.

Splice - 5/5

Pretty insane mind-fuck of a movie.

Predators - 4/5

This one also makes me more excited for a future sequel. It certainly feels like Predator, but like Superman Returns it's a bit heavy on the original movie worship. Given the budget, this really should/could have been the second Predator movie. Now that it's honored with a proper sequel, I wonder where they can take this.

Star Trek: Insurrection - 67
Star Trek: Nemesis - 70

Not a memorable story in Insurrection. Plus some lame effects also. And camerawork. There was one scene where to get the effect to look like the ship was flipping around, they just rotated the camera over and over. Pretty "amerature" stuff. Nemesis was a big "meh". Kinda a bummer when blank dies but he blanked his blanks to blank so that he may live on.

Might rewatch the J.J. Abrams version now.

Winter's Bone - About a 17 year old girl who searches for her meth-dealing father in the Ozark mountains. This was great and for some reason I love movies set in desolate parts of America full of disgusting hicks. The main girl was really good too, I think she's playing Mystique in the X-Men prequel. 8/10

Revanche - Not following the rules of the thread title because this is a rewatch but this movie is incredible. A neo-noir about a guy who tries to rob a bank with his prostitute girlfriend, a cop kills her while they escape - he retreats to his grandfather's country house, that just so happens to be in the same village as the cop that killed his girlfriend. This is a one of a kind "revenge" flick, where aside from some hate fucking nothing really happens, but it still manages to be heavy on tension.

I never feel like I've been able to look at Mickey Rourke 'objectively' in The Wrestler just because I was pulling for him to win so hard strictly because he'd been in a film about a wrestler. I guess in my eyes nothing could top his performance but at the same time I never thought he'd win because it'd be 'too good to be true' or something.

I'm pretty sure he put in the best performance that year though. In my opinion. I do have my built in interest in wrestling, but I viewed it pretty objectively.

Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows part 1

I have not read any of the books but I totally enjoyed EVERY one of the Potter movies. I understood going in that this movie was part 1 of a 2 part finale to the series so I didn't expect the exact same magic as we are used to. I also knew going in that the writer/director didn't want to piss off a bunch of fanboys by leaving out tons of details from this huge installment. Still...I didn't like the movie at all really. Tons of hiding. Tons of talking. The few action sequences were very well done but they were so few and far between and not a lot really happened in part 1. Easily the weakest in the series.

Yeah, nowhere near as good as the first. A little campy at times, plus, you already know about the creatures in this one, so the surprise, and in turn, the pacing is gone.

Seriously, Descent has probably one of the best slow builds of any horror movie I've ever seen. Second one throws it out the window for typical horror cliches. Still kind of a fun watch though.

I haven't seen it, but I have to wonder if they should have gone completely different rather than trying to duplicate the first.

Since the first was so much like Alien, maybe they could have just copied the Aliens approach for a sequel.

I loved the first Descent, but I really have had no interest to check this one out. Maybe I will eventually.

Predators - It was alright I guess, I didn't expect anything as good as the original just something fun and somewhat competant. Thought the end was pretty much tensionless and predictable though. 6.5/10

Still Walking - Love this director, very much inspired by the films of Yasujiro Ozu. It's about a family getting together to commemorate the death of one of the family members. Really simple but beautiful story dealing with repressed resentments. 9/10
