I will give it a solid 8/10

I am excited about this

Watching The Meg, there's an Oriental woman in this who comes off as a dangerously stupid bastard. They give her these lines like she's some arrogant professional then she continually fucks things up, nearly gets Statham killed and somehow gives him shit for it afterwards and he just smiles every fucking time.

I dunno who wrote this but their interpretation of comedy is basically "women screw things up and act superior regardless".

I don't find it funny.

In one particularly face-screwing example she actually sticks Statham on a winch in the ocean and when they start it to winch him back in she stops it just as the Meg takes chase to say "No vibrations!" Then realised Statham is now dead in the water so they have to restart the winch.

I'm sorry but that sort of thing pulls me out of films. That's not a mistake, that's a director purposefully making a character such a shithead that you lose focus on the action, the spectacle that cost millions to lure you in in the first place.

Idiotic.

Rainn Wilson is always worth watching and the kid in this is quite cute so there are good bits in between the varying examples of gross negligence.

The action is predictable as hell though. It's not as good as Deep Blue Sea, far from it. It's probably around the level of Jaws 4.

The Equalizer 10/10

Someone could probably critique that there is no tension in it because Denzel is basically Batman and barely breaks a sweat, but fuck it. Sometimes it's just really satisfying to see a revenge movie where a dude just stomps the shit out of a bunch of evil fucks, tension be damned, and this delivers in that regard, possibly better than anything I've ever seen.

I got it in a two pack with the second one, so I'm gonna fire that up in a bit.

The Equalizer 2 6/10

Fuck, not nearly as good. Pacing is really bad. Part of what made the first one so good was that the people he fought were real scum bags. These guys are bad people but they're just kind of random soldier guys. Nowhere near as slimy as the russian mafia from the first. Main antagonist sucks.

Also, the other instances of him helping neighborhood people feels a bit more forced and out of place within the main narrative, whereas in the first it felt more organic.

Finally, there is a twist that fucking anyone could see coming.

Into the SpiderVerse - 9/10

Seanny One Ball
12-14-2018, 10:12 AM
I too watched The Equalizer 2 last night. Not as good as the first, the tone is consistent but the story isn't depicted nearly as well and it's lacking in the sudden, jarring action.

It does have two excellent fight scenes but they're early on and mean nothing to the story.

I like Antoine Fuqua and I love Denzel but they can do a lot better than this. The first was a strong action film that suffered a release too close to John Wick. The sequel is definite proof that Wick deserves a franchise, Equalizer does not.
They should have tied Denzel down to a short run tv series remake. They struggled to fill two hours with the plot here.

Best Spider-Man movie to date, imo. Miles as a character is great. There were real stakes and consequences, the animation was outstanding. Like a motion comic. And I liked what seemed to be the Raimi Spider-Man and seeing how his life turned out.

Overall I absolutely loved this film. Cannot recommend it enough. The end credits scene is stellar.

Aquaman - 7.5/10

The biggest spectacle of any superhero film yet. It's an 80's action film meets a video game. Has a "Star Wars but underwater" vibe to it. I thought it was a blast! It's not the best or most deep superhero film, but it's definitely worth watching for the huge spectacle of it all. The kids in the theater really seemed to like it. The girl sitting next to me got excited whenever Mera was onscreen.

Standouts are Jason Mamoa, Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe and Nicole Kidman.

Lock Jaw

I probably would have rated it 8.5, but I rated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse that, and I think I liked this more (hard to compare them really, they are two different types of movies).

I think I'll still give the nod to Wonder Woman because of the perfect casting of Gal Gadot. Even after a movie I really liked, I'm still not sold that there couldn't have been a much better choice than Jason Mamoa for Aquaman.

Also please keep in mind that I am a DC fan-boy who is skewed to like DC things (Though who can acknowledge when they make terrible movies like BvS. I enjoyed Justice League, though)

Seanny One Ball
12-22-2018, 05:44 PM
BvS wasn't a terrible movie at all. It was a massive waste of potential though.

DC movies so far have peaked at Man Of Steel and Wonder Woman for me. I think WW wa the better film but I am very keen on seeing more done with what DC has to offer. Flash was wonderful in Justice League, I hope he gets a film.

Seanny One Ball
12-22-2018, 05:46 PM
I don't know what Aquaman looks like in the comics but I thought Momoa was good business on DC's end.

He was in Conan and was good but the movie was mediocre so you can see parallels with Chris Evans(Fantastic Four sucked then he did Cap. America for dirt cheap salary and now he's the best Avenger) of Marvel.
Maybe Momoa is the lynchpin that they need. Maybe he'll be their Cap.

I think it's on par with Black Panther and a little less than Wonder Woman, which is still peak DCEU. That said it's ridiculously entertaining and the fact that they embrace the camp of it all makes it that much more fun. Everyone gets to ham it up and it's glorious. Aquaman 10/10. Quiet possibly my favorite super hero movie of all time. Granted I know nothing of the origin so I went in with no backstory except talking to fish.

Everything was well done. Even the actress lady was on point during the film. 1000000% loved that Aquaman does not become super powerful with the new trident. He still needed to take the big bad guy out of the water to fight .

Movie was hilarious also. Perfect mix of laughs and serious moments. Crushed WW imo. Fight scenes were superb.

Yes highly advised. Maybe have a beer while watching. It's a fun movie. The score is also really good. This movie is exactly what was needed for DCEU. I think people are going to love it and it'll have strong legs at the box office. The unrelenting energy in which it's written is on a level even higher than the Marvel films.

There's a good movie in there somewhere but the whole thing is rushed and stupid.

Man, people can get in and out of that top secret lab super easy. Also nice to know that children can hop international flights unattended and there can be billions dollars of destruction through a metropolitan area and you don't hear a peep about it. People really aren't all that terrified of Venom running around. It's as if it's a run of the mill day in SF which might actually be pretty realistic.

Anyway.....there's potential here but it deserved the bad reviews. I'm glad it made a bunch of money because I'd like someone else to have another crack at Venom.

So disappointed in this Polish TV show I think I've mentioned. Hate Polish TV show, but my mom recommended it and I've seen a few scenes while at her place and decided to try it.

1st season - So Positevely surprised. It shows people of Warsaw struggling against the Germans 1941-44. Small groups, some lone people. Dealing with the fact they're overwhelmed, just shows them dealing with everyday life, everything they need to do do to get by. SMALL SCALE. Some really badass street fight scenes, some really cool, unexpecting but making sense plot twists. Actually unexpected deaths.

2nd season. - For some reason they're all in Cairo now, some jews are now very high-ranking SS and some of the characters are superhuman I think?

There's 7 seasons... I asked my mom and to my relief she only saw the first before convincing me to watch it.

WHERE THE FUCK IS THIS GOING?

Cam - 3/4

An emotionally claustrophobic horror that is as much about the vapid nature of models on film as it is an indictment on fame chasing, delusions of grandeur and obsessive social media tracking in a dangerously sexualised world view.

This is the film that Neon Demon could have been had Neon Demon replaced stupidity with bravery. The film maker here proves that you can make a hell of an effective horror on a shoestring budget and without a marquee star provided you are committed and have substance behind your conceit.

I very much enjoyed this, it was uncomfortable and yet very inclusive of the audience. You won't walk away feeling empty or hollow hopefully.

The documentary series "Evil Genius" is superb. I remember when this happened, it was all over the world news and they turned it into a slapstick Jesse Eisenberg caper movie.

Cargo is wonderful. I'm not happy with the reviews, nobody got it. It's about the inevitability of a doomed situation and a beautifully taken pot-shot at Western civilisation.

I thought that it had real quality both in performance and style. I see it as a contemporary "Walkabout" and I see no reason not to call it a great film.

Netflix free pass. I'd rather watch 50 things than one. I don't trust DC or you enough to bother with a £10 movie ticket and a return bus journey to match it. That's £20 when I could sit on my balls watching unheard of horror films for free.

The Babysitter is so far beyond expectation I'm still not sure what I thought I would get from it in the first place. That's a very well sold comedy horror with two outstanding performances that give you the true tone of the film. It is exceptionally weird and that quality does it no harm.

Creed II-9/10

Personally liked it better then the first. Kid Drago is a fucking monster. His backstory is excellent and while it would prob have ruined his mystique, I would've loved to have seen more of him as his story and where dad Ivan ended up is sad.

Creed's arc is familiar, though they don't go the usual route to get to the same outcome and his personal story and journey, and the driving forces behind it, are different but effective.

Rocky has a side story that gets wrapped at film's end that's a bit a tear jerker. My only gripe is damn it, why hasn't Carl Weathers gotten a cameo. Yes, I know his being dead is the driving force behind the purpose of the new main character, but still.

Anyways, i loved this film. And to make it better, people in the audience sitting at the bottom row where fucking popping for Creed in the climactic fight. Drago goes down and it sounded like Austin hit a stunner. Usually hate noisy movie crowds but given it was a boxing movie, this exactly enhanced my enjoyment.

Re: Carl Weathers... Sylvester Stallone wouldn't let Carl Weathers anywhere near a Rocky film now, and he was going to if not for all the shit he caused around the time of Rocky Balboa. He demanded to be physically in the movie then denied use of his image rights for flashbacks. He's a lunatic.
Arrested Development got his character so perfect when they made him the ultimate sponger.

Adam West once decried Tim Burton when he made Batman and didn't want to use him.

I didn't know who Doug Kenney was going into this but now I know his influence in my life in several small ways. Not being a National Lampoon fan I watched this more to find out about the stars it made and left with the knowledge that Doug Kenney was probably a good part of the reason these people ever had careers.
This is Will Forte's best ever performance, using his trademark one-liner comedy to embody one of his many precursors. I am in great admiration of his ability to do that and somehow build towards real, unabashed emotional and heartbreaking pathos.

He's as good in this as Jim Carrey was in Man On The Moon. The comparisons are fairly obvious but these are two distinctly brilliant performances from men of whom the world expects nothing beyond buffoonery and they are a joy to watch at their best.

Jack Reacher and Jack Reacher 2 - 6,5/10

Decent action flicks. What I didn't understand is why he never has his own gun. It's not like he's against guns, he picks them up and shoots them, just never carries. He goes to meet the villain for what is surely gonna be a gunfight and he's got no gun.

Seanny One Ball
01-01-2019, 08:51 PM
He refuses to carry a gun because he knows that his own instincts are enough on an average day. He regularly carries guns during conflict.
It's a fundamental part of the character that is esteblished in the books. So much of it was thrown out of the window with the casting of Tom Cruise. I actually love Cruise as Reacher but I think a guy who looks the part is essential to the role now. The first Reacher film was pure class though.

Sixx if they do the character justice in the upcoming show then you'll love him. He's a big hard bastard that saves the day by killing all of the evil. All of it.
I imagined Karl Urban or Ray Stevenson playing him long before Tom Cruise took the part.

Far and fucking away the best written transformers movie since they went live action. Like, not even close. The characters are actually the driving force behind the story. There aren't endless, impossible to follow, over the top action sequences that beat your ear drums into submission.

And whenyou do get to the action, it's so satisfying and thrilling not only because it was choreographed and shot well, but because they actually didn't blow their load throughout the movie. The opening scene is a rousing one.

So glad I gave this a go and I hope it works as a soft reboot of this franchise with more movies written in this manner.

The first one is solid but it's peak Bay. Competent at best and is more driven by the novelty of being the first live action Transformers movie. I remember watching the first Optimus Prime transformer sequence with my jaw on the floor. Also, Hugo Weaving as Megatron was fantastic casting and he had great lines, and a good final boss build up.

But that doesn't compare with this one. Not in the slightest. Ideally this is a new direction and we get more this writer/director team. The opening sequence starting on Cybertron and then to Earth was a blast.

One last remark on Bumblebee; there's a character moment where Hailee Steinfeld's character is called on/encouraged to do something that would essentially break her out of the dorky/nerdy/self imposed secluded shell she's built up at the start of the movie.

If Michael Bay was making this film, she absolutely would've done it in the middle of the film because it would've been a "cool scene bruh". But here, the director chooses to treat the character with hesitancy and an unwillingness to embrace the situation. And when she does embrace that moment that draws her back to a past she's running from, it actually means something. It's the little things that set this one apart.

Watching BlacKkKlansman, didn't actually expect it to be such a hilarious film. By about half an hour racial language has been devalued down to a ludicrous level by repeated use in farcical ways. It's a simple way to do it but it works very well.
I think the film would be a bit of a slog if it was like "Detroit" or something. In fact Detroit really annoyed me, this is very good and thoroughly enjoyable so far. Easily Spike Lee's best film since the 90's because I prefer farce and comical undermining to pure demonisation.

90% of that film could have happened but didn't and yet the central premise that two men are playing the same character when it really only would take one of them is hilariously true.

Split-7/10

Really fun performance from James McAvoy. Casey had a really interesting, if not fully fleshed backstory that I wish we saw more of. The upcoming sequel maybe dives into that, but on its own merit as a standalone, I wanted more of her history.

The premise was really cool and the whole idea of what the horde considers pure.

Hopefully we get everything nearly wrapped and further explored in Glass.

Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse 8/10

i actually really loved this, despite really not liking Mile Morales too much, but I managed to enjoy him in this. Was caught off guard by the modern universe spiderman death, but I guess I should of seen it coming based upon the source material. Nick Cage as Spiderman Noir was amazing. I love how they mocked the origin stories in the movie, and even putting in the Spider-Man 3 dancing bit. Of course it wouldn't be a Spider-Man origin story without someone dying.

I bet all of the people he has killed since 2007 are equal to or greater than the number he saved in Schindler's List.
He's mad that his glory as Oskar didn't result in Oscar glory and now he's undoing it all, one paint by numbers action movie at a time.

Oddly enough Cuba Gooding Jr won an Oscar and went on to kill everybody he could on DVD so maybe winning an Oscar is a bad thing in the action world.

What a nice documentary. That had very few negative vibes in it and because of the clear and apparent nature of that negativity I think the director did well to avoid delving too deep into it in favour of concentrating on a fond remembrance of an almost forgotten niche in wrestling history.

Tag-6/10

The tag sequences and set ups were hilarious and easily the best part of the movie. The actors are all funny and get fun things to do.

The part that kinda killed it for me was the end. Couple of heavy handed outs to move the movie to the ending cause a little tonal shift that's kinda weird, and also felt very hammy and unearned.

It was still a fun watch however.

Perfectos Desconocidos (Perfect Strangers)-8/10
Spanish language film about a group of friends who decide to play a game, putting their cell phones on the table and having any alert or phone call they receive read aloud to the group.

Of course shenanigans shortly follow, including an extended gag where one of the characters gets mistakenly and falsely outed as being gay.

The lines and dingers are really sharp, largely, I think, because they're in Spanish so there's a bit more flare in how they're delivered. It was a fun devil's advocate, what do you have to hide type of movie. My fave comedy in a while.

Is the Broly movie a reboot/retelling or a sequel?

Helmsphere
01-16-2019, 10:20 PM
It's a reboot/retelling.

Broly as a character wasn't actually apart of the Main Dragonball Story, as are characters such as Cooler, Janemba, Bojack...etc

This is basically moving Broly story into the Main DB Universe, with a retelling of his story. Frieza is handed the keys to King Cold's Empire due to him retiring, where Frieza meets the Saiyans for the first time, gives them Scouters...etc

King Vegeta is proud of his son Vegeta as a baby and his power level, and the potential he has, until he is told of another Saiyan baby with a higher potential. King Vegeta is pissed at this and send Broly to be sent to a far off planet that is inhabitable and is dangerous and is more then likely going to kill the child.

Paragus follows Broly to this planet to save his son. Frieza learns of Broly high potential and decides to blow up Planet Vegeta, Gine and Bardock send Goku off to earth...

Only differences, Broly is not a monster who is triggered by a crying baby, and he hates Vegeta not Goku.

Best Dragonball movie imo.

So my town isn't going to get the Broly movie, and I prefer subtitles anyway, so I just downloaded a cam version and watched it.

First impressions are this is the best Dragon Ball movie ever. It's a little over half the movie before any real fighting starts, but I was very entertained for all the set up. Lots of really cool flashbacks and insight into the saiyan empire and their relationship with Freiza. Some new characters introduced that I genuinely liked and enjoyed.

Broly is given a bit more of a personality. Not much, but the important thing is you're given more reason to care about him than the previous version.

Then the fight starts. And holy shit is it good. Forget about this being the best that Dragon Ball has ever looked, this is one of the best looking anime I've ever seen.

Fucking tremendous stuff.

Only thing I didn't like was Bardock. They made him more benevolent, and he is far less interesting for it. He was way cooller in the old special. Better outfit too.

Ides of March-9/10

Fuck me, do I love Ryan Gosling. Plays a second in command campaign manager under Philip Seymour Hoffman, as George Clooney seeks the democratic nomination.

Paul Giamatti sees Gosling's talent and wants him aboard, telling him his guy's gonna lose so jump from the sinking ship now. All political hell breaks lose, as Gosling is both threatened to be blackmailed, fired, and his career destroyed while also randomly gaining leverage against Clooney that he initially tries to bury until tragedy hits and he's forced to apply his hand.

The whole cast is obviously top notch, and Gosling is so damn magnetic with his silent charisma and presence. It's a pretty fun, interesting and, at the end, sleazy little political movie that shows what I can only imagine is the ugly side of politics the everyday man never sees. Loved it.

I watched The Endless last night. It was excellent, I think Frank Drebin would enjoy it. It's not a film I would dare describe to anyone because it is so enjoyable trying to figure out what exactly is going on.

All I can say is it could be sci fi, horror, a mystery, a thriller or even a sort of buddy-Bildungsroman.

It was as good as anything that has 300x the budget.
