A compassionate, intelligent, beautiful film. Comedy for the right cause.
Taika Waititi is the best thing to happen to comedy in a long, long time. A genius.

Taika Waititi after a string of bangers is now in that horrible situation where he will be judged more harshly on his work if it doesn't cut the mustard.
It happened to Alexander Payne with "Downsizing" so hopefully Taika doesn't go daft and waste a premise here or there.

It has to be said he has gotten his money's worth from every topic he has handled so far. I think making a comedy out of the Hitler Youth might be his finest achievement in terms of sheer audacity.

I love the man. I would follow him wherever he chose to take his next movie.

I remember watching "Leave No Trace" and thinking "Thomasin Mckenzie is a great actor" now I am glad she's a great actor who picks the right parts.
Sam Rockwell was the one that made me cry, he was his usual brilliant self. Pure talent for any genre, a gift for any actor sharing a scene because he will let others work. I bet Sam Rockwell is the best actor to work with on set. I can't imagine him being a dick at all.

The kid was great too btw.i hope Taika Waititi casts Ben Foster and Emile Hirsch someday.

Seanny One Ball
06-13-2020, 03:51 PM
I stopped watching it, it was boring the tits off me after about an hour.
I don't like whodunnits as a general rule but this one looked fun. It was bearable until I realised I didn't care one iota who dun it and no number of twists could satisfy me after the first big reveal.

So yeah, not my cup of tea at all.
I think I prefer mysteries where you have to figure out the mystery yourself, that clearly wasn't the point of the exercise here.

Seanny One Ball
06-13-2020, 03:58 PM
It reminded me of the things I don't like about Steven Soderbergh, if that makes any sense to you.
Premise secondary to dialogue, dialogue that only works if it's smart or funny enough to pull you in.

I also stopped watching Sorry To Bother You for similar reasons.

I get hooked by a premise but the realisation of it is poorly executed for my taste.
I'm like a bit of gritty reality and you tend not to find that in these sorts of films. Too busy trying to be clever or make a point.
Great, but entertain me first mother fucker.

Now "Vivarium" is brilliantly creepy so far.
Treading a fine line...

Vivarium - 3.5/4

House hunting goes badly wrong for an unwary, unwitting couple.
The film opens with a nasty piece of repulsive nature and follows on with pastel coloured pop-art sets that look like they came straight out of a housing development flyer from the 50's.
Peter Greenaway would love these sets, they look so plastic and blatant that they themselves supply a great element of unease to go with the immediately insidious storyline as well as the performance of the bizarre realtor.
Not to give anything away at all(because the plot is so small and brilliant), this is a film about a situation nobody can do anything about. They have been put there, they are stuck there and making the best of it doesn't ever seem to be a truly viable option.

Eisenberg always struck me best as a naturally neurotic character playing himself off as confident, which is a perfect reason to cast him here because he does it brilliantly and in an extremely restrained and far less verbose character than usual. He jumps from idyllic to insane pretty quickly in this film, or at least his actions would be criminally insane in any other environment outside of this one. Were I posting this on some turd website I'd suggest multiple trigger warnings for people who can't handle a bit of grit, but in the context it is completely essential to the tone.
Man and woman begin to fall apart over the course of the movie due to the malignant influence of a terrible mystery.

This is a film to think about because it explains so little and yet makes sense within its own rules and decisions. It isn't a strange film for the sake of it, it adheres to its own standards and makes the effort to give you something you can take as far as you want in your own imagination.

This was pretty much the best film I could have seen after explaining why "Knives Out" bored me enough to turn it off.
It made the effort to create a mystery, then it provided solid dialogue and story progression based on believable reactions to the premise.

I very much enjoyed and was creeped out by "Vivarium", but be warned. There are a couple of moments in this film that could be described as "just fucking stupid" if it took you even slightly out of the movie.
Luckily I was already too engrossed to care, however this is a distinct possibility with people who do not want anything particularly overt in an otherwise fairly complex little story about a nightmare in real life.

Excellent performances from top to bottom in a tiny cast makes everything more impactful. The plot was clearly set, well paced and executed well enough to induce existential terror.

I would advise anyone who has seen it or wants to see it to read the John Steinbeck short "Johnny Bear", watch the Quentin Dupieux film "Wrong" and have a look for Peter Greenaway's "Tulse Luper Chronicles" in any form you can find it in order to see similar set designs which surely had to have an impact on these.

Watching another Eisenberg/Poots joint called "The Art Of Self-Defense".
It has a very deliberate style of line delivery in it that makes each character seem like they came into the real world from a Wes Anderson film.
Almost everyone is slightly off... no sincerity to over sincerity, monotone delivery of speeches that require passion... There are some incredibly funny lines that come purely from this style of delivery.

Alessandro Nivola and Jesse Eisenberg play well with the tone. It has an odd, disingenuous quality to it. Very funny.

Aquaman- 7/10

its good. 2nd best dc movie fairly easily. The script has some real issues mostly around having waaaaaaay too much to do. Several arcs resolve one scene apart. Film is ultra rushed. Also suffers from an overuse of sets even for "exteriors" and when they actually go on location theyre forced to use this wierd vasalene filter to keep a visual consistency.

That said the characters shine bright and the action is among the best in the genre. Some of the jokes dont land but its enjoyable throughout and its world building (albiet very rushed) pays off in a satifying way.

I watched Ad Astra the other night, it was beautiful to look at but I didn't think much of the plot to be honest.
It felt like Event Horizon in a lot of ways. Not as good though.

I think I'd give it 3/4 just for Brad Pitt and how pretty it was to look at.

The beginning was scary as tits though, a fuckin ladder to space...argh

365 Days-0/10

A dumb, senseless, directionless movie that serves as fantasy to only the loneliest, most thirsty of sexless women.

A very young, handsome and muscular mobster almost dies in a deal gone wrong. He then makes it his mission to find, kidnap and win the love of a woman who he randomly saw for 2 seconds thru his car window.

Once he's kidnapped her, the love interest makes a series of a dumb decisions as they try to tease sexualtension. The turning point where are finally breaks its really stupid. The movie itself doesn't even meet its own movie title.

The movie has nudity galore, and 12 year old me would've loved all the scenes where the female lead just has her titties out and about.

34 year old me is rolling their eyes throughout wondering when this movie will finally end. I watched this because my gf was interested in seeing it. She thought it was dumb and was a wishapp version of 50 shades of grey.

So it's Boxing Helena aimed at women in 2020?
Or is it The Collector?

The Collector book and film has been a sex-killer favourite for quite a while.
Is it wise to be making erotica out of something that keeps happening in real life?

Tu Hijo-5/10

A man's son is beaten within an inch of his life in what seems like a senseless act of violence. His father, a doctor, sets out to try to find out who did as opposed to why.

It's a long, boring, slow moving story that plays out mostly how'd you expect, but so little happens throughout that it's hard to stay invested. The plot twist at the end is ok but it was a drag to make it that far.

Been trying to watch this movie since it's limited release in 2018. It was pretty good. Nicole Kidman is very good. But he performance wasn't as transformative as some of the reviews I read would lead you to believe.

Anyways....a drunkn old detective went deep undercover early in her career with tragic results. She finds out the person they were undercover to investigate is back, and the story plays out from there, with her basically going rogue to pursue leads and showing flashbacks to how the operation was botched, leading her life to become the shit hole it is.

Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Ronin - 3.5/4

High volumes of fast paced heist action with gunplay galore interlocked by some slick, droll repartee between fine fine actors.

Mcelhone, De Niro and Reno are the main players backed up by Bean and Pryce so the facial acting is all very earnest without the slightest scene chewing.

All in all it's a top tier action film and a great example of style and substance working perfectly to improve what is otherwise a fairly familiar "game of cat and mouse" plot.

It works though, especially if you like car chases.

Truth be told, despite trying, I have yet to ever finish a John Wick movie. I've probably fired up the first film a handful times in an attempt to try, but I couldn't get into it. At all

Becky - 5/10

This outlandish post on Reddit

https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/h0bwnn/anyone_able_to_explain_of_ending_of_becky_2020/

I think u/kirinmay was on the right track.

At the beginning of the movie, Becky is doodling the SS bolts over her name on a test which is a Nazi symbol.

At the gas station Becky looks around at the white people in the family reunion shirts and stops to stare at the one non-white looking woman then leaves the store to wait outside while her dad shops.

When they get to cabin, Becky starts off "She wouldn't want us to sell it. Just because she isn't here anymore..." and her dad cuts her off that he'd changed his mind last minute not to sell it. This would seem to imply the cabin was more her mom's than her dad's.

When her dad says he's getting married to Kayla, Becky looks at her with disgust and blurts out "She would have hated you!"

The Nazis have been in prison 9+ years and the literal key to their Nazi plan that they've been working on for years is hidden in cabin where they know it is in the basement.

When the Nazis get to the cabin they don't know Jeff or Becky at all, nor do Jeff or Becky know them.

Jeff was unaware of the key or the Nazi plan. Becky was aware of at least the key.

So my theory is that the dead mother was a Nazi and working with them on their plan. The plan had been in the works for much longer than she had been dead. She was keeping the key for them in the basement of her cabin. The Nazis found out she had died and the cabin was going up for sale so they orchestrated their prison escape to collect the key to move forward with the plan before someone could buy the cabin and trash the key.

Jeff possibly only tolerated his wife's racism (not knowing her Nazi affiliations) or was himself racist until he fell in love with a black woman after her death. Becky knew more about that side of her mom, hence her doodling Nazi symbols, appearing bothered by mixed race families, and knowing of the key to the Nazi plan.

However, since the Nazis kill her dog and threaten her family before she even knows who they are she takes action against them and kills them all out of revenge. She then keeps the key for herself rather than telling the authorities about it.

Is Becky racist? I think she has picked up some racism from her mother. Is Becky actually a Nazi too and keeping the key to continue her mothers plan on her own or is she just holding onto it as some morbid keepsake? It's hard to say.

....mental health issues and family. The skin peeling scene was a bit too much but I guess it symbolized how the daughter was finally coming to terms with her mother's sickness. Loved Knives Out.

Think comparing it to Clue may be a stretch, other than they are both murder mysteries with a large cast.

Watching some older films via piracy.

80's comedies ranging from Monster Squad to Throw Momma From The Train.
I may do a Chevy or Candy binge at some point. It needs doing.

Throw Momma From The Train is very good shit.
De Vito owning it with pure De Vito-ness.
Kate Mulgrew used to be very attractive, could only be a few years before Star Trek too. Interesting developments.

Monster Squad was top class though. No denying the fun of a monster movie with some very well written gags.

I think it made me laugh around 7 minutes in when one kid drops his friend in it in the principal's office and then says "how rude".

Jack And Jill is easy to reach. Sandler has an entire stack of his own just behind the Coen brothers.

Jack And Jill is a hilarious film btw. Very underrated.

Sandler, Stiller, Ferrell and Judd Apatow used to all get their own stack. Now only Sandler remains.
The Coen bros get their own stack too as does Gervais.

All other stacks are genre related.

Batman Returns-8/10

Did a re watch and forgot how much i used too enjoy this movie. Not the best Batman movie, but imo the best of the original 4. The look, mood, sets and costume design is top notch and the story works. Used to be my fave of the original 4 as a kid and it holds up for me.

For me, it's The Dark Knight. Felt like a graphic novel come to life. I thought all the characterizations were spot on and the story had real heft, comparatively to other comic book inspired movies.

TDKRises still my fave tho.

clue sucked? you wouldn't know what a good movie was if it bit you on the ass

or you are the type of guy that watches chick flicks with his girlfriend, but doesn't watch them to get laid, you actually want to watch them also.

Official Secrets 7/10

A solid legal/press drama around the leaking of a NSA memo by a British intelligence officer prior to the 2003 Iraq invasion and the legality of the action.

I don't particularly care if you like it or not Dave.
A comedy film has one job and that isn't to be a well written masterpiece, it's to make me laugh.

Watching "Jumanji: The Next Level" and it is very funny already. Lots of good laughs early on before the action gets going. Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson doing impressions of Danny Glover and Danny Devito is high level shtick.

The New Mutants - 7/10

I'm not sure why they waited forever to release it. The final fight goes a little too long and is predictable and some of the CGI was workable rather than great but I enjoyed it overall. I thought it worked well as a superhero meets horror flick (I'd say it's more of a horror flick).

First Blood- 9/10

im a bit tired so I'll keep this brief. what action films arent. i typically pass on the genre. tends to be mindless. the violence has a voice and its all very well communicated. i should have watched this decades ago. def a case where the sequels tarnished the name so i never checked it out.
