Moviepass #9 Flatliners 2017 - 5/10

For starters within the next few months I'm going to end up needing open heart surgery so seeing a movie where a bunch of people decide hey lets stop our hearts inn the name of science probably wasn't great idea. All the reviews seemed to have the same idea..the movie feels pointless. I will agree and add to that the biggest pointlessness is Kiefer Sutherland having an extended cameo and not doing anything with him. But..anyway..it wasn't bad..it wasn't good..just felt like 100 minutes of pointlessness.

I'm seeing Snowman tomorrow night. I might be bothered to see Geostorm too..I guess

Favourite Spidey to date. Very light, whimsical, small in scale but thoroughly funny, enjoyable and entertaining. Small gripes include the Flash Thompson casting but whatever. This movie was fun as fuck.

Michael Keaton is so great. Tom Holland was perfect. And Aunt May as a sassy Italian lady is so sexy. More please.

I don't like it when you make a post saying what movie you are watching and then later edit it to add in your score. Half the time I just forget about it. Sometimes I go "oh yeah Droford made a post" and then I have to scroll up to find it and see your edited post with the score.

Where The Day Takes You

I found this on Netflix. It's about this guy named King who wears a leather jacket with a snake on it, and he leads this group of runaway white people that live on the streets of Los Angeles, one of them is a drug addict who wears a varsity jacket with a W on it played by Sean Astin. Hot Laura Flynn Boyle joins the group and she hooks up with King. King eventually gets into this spat with some other guy and that guy gets shot by one of the young guys in the group who has gay sex to get by which causes some drama. Kyle McLaughlin plays a drug dealer who lives in one of those rooms with graffiti on the walls and an incline bench press rack next to the couch. It's Will Smith's first movie as well apparently, he plays a guy in a wheelchair without legs. I don't know, it was basically a glorified episode of Melrose Place with a better cast but equally as melodramatic. Movies from the early nineties hit a specific nostalgic nerve with me though so it kept my attention.

Justice League-6/10

Has all the same problems the two previous crappy Snyder efforts had; pacing and editing issues, character development and motive, and a compelling villain.

THE GOOD

1. The team-this is the highlight of the film. The casting of the heroes and their chemistry together is top notch. They mesh well together.

2. Superman-they finally got him right. Allegedly, all or most of the scenes were Whedon reshoots, and he did in 20 minutes what Snyder failed to do in over 5 hours of film, and that's get the tone and personality of Superman right.

3. The Flash-this is a breakout role for Miller. He's been on plenty of movies already, but he's now in a big tent pole style movie, wear he steals almost every scene he's in.

TEH BADZ

1. Steppenwolf-Good God he was fucking boring. A cardboard cutout of a villain with little motive, none of which was compelling, boring dialogue that came off as just rambling, and a horribly rendered cgi model that looked fake as shit.

2.editing/pacing-this is something Snyder has always sucked balls at. You just jump scene to scene with little if any set up. For instance, we get the scene from the trailer of Bruce removing his snow goggles, looking down on the bar in Iceland or wherever he found Aquaman. His lines about a stranger from the sea kicks in literally right after. You go from him looking down from the top of the mountain to him talking to the patrons.

This could've easily been fixed by having Bruce walk thru the doors, a clear outsider, with the patrons stopping what they're doing to look at him as he walks thru the bar. He can get to the front, look around, and start talking. But they skip all that.

This is the whole movie. It's one scene right after another. There a few scenes where the movie will slow down to let the characters breath, and those are the best moments. But they're too few and far between.

3. Stakes-there were non. Except for one family in the end. But you don't see how the worldis rearin reacting to Steppenwolf, to scientists being stolen, to the world seemingly about to end. It's all very....contained. In the Avengers, you see the teamsaving people but also see just how big a threat the invasion is to civilians. In Justice League, you don't get the sense anything that's going on is of much importance to the world.

4. Action Sets-they're boring, and uninspired. Outside of one scene involving Supes and the League, the action for the most part is meh. The end of the movie, with shoddy cgi, just drags, much like the last 2 efforts, and is really the least interesting part of the film.

5. Character development-sure, the characters are fun, but because the film is so short and they have to rush into setting up the team to battle Steppenwolf, you never get a chance to sit down and really invest in these characters. There are moments that give you an idea, and they're interesting, but the brisk pace and jumpy editing of the film doesn't allow these scenes to be fully developed. Especially Aquaman. As cool as he was, and as funny as a scene with him before the final battle was, he wasn't really fleshed out much or given much motive to be there.

I gave Bvs the same score, as I feel from a film standpoint these movies are about the same in quality. In terms of watchability, however, Justice League, is a much better waste of time. It has great character moments and is light on the usual overbearing style of Snyder's attempt at dark and complicated and focuses more on trying to just be a simple crowd pleasure. Which is why I feel it's a very small but very certain step in the right direction.

I wonder if this'll get a sequel. Affleck looks like he's all but done, but everyone else seems on board. So I'm interested to see if they somehow rebuild the train wreck Snyder has left them. Amazing he lasted this long.

This was very good I thought. It's based on the Raymond Chandler novel, and to date I've never read a Raymond Chandler novel, but they make for good movies. Robert Altman is one of my favorite "stylistic" directors, all of his movies are set in cool ass buildings and houses and stuff.

Doctor Strange - 4 out of 5

Really good overall even though it follows a similar pattern Marvel have been using for their Cinematic Universe films. The first half being slow and mainly spent on building the origin while the latter half is when things start to really move along and act more as the character's showcase.

Kathryn Hahn saved this from the bin. So talented and enjoyable is Kathryn Hahn that I watched an otherwise deplorably bad film. Mila Kunis is quite frankly a terrible actress with no redeeming features in a movie designed to take away her only appeal by ageing her.
Don't cast Mila Kinis in a lead fucking role. She's shite.

Logan Lucky 8/10 - Great fun, very smart caper which really wasn't what I expected. Adam Driver was good but Daniel Craig was hilarious.

Office Christmas Party - 7.5/10 - So much funnier than I hoped. A consistently funny and endearing little adult Christmas number.

Trance - 4/10 - Fucking terrible. This was like a shit remake of some weird French film but apparently it's an original opportunity to make another uninspired mess. Danny Boyle is caught in his own hype. He hasn't made a great film for a while and on rewatching none of his films really stand up as well as Shallow Grave. Trainspotting was always overrated but recent Boyle is bizarre and disappointing for me. T2, 127 Hours, Sunshine and Trance are all films that pretty much any generic director could have made.

Brawl In Cell Block 99 - 9/10 - After Bone Tomahawk we get this glorious and timely contribution to the prison genre. It seems like too long since a director making a genre film just said "fuck it" and instead of trope swerving just drives right through them. This is a brilliant film. It has big budget B movie written all over it and stood alongside Bone Tomahawk pushes this writer/director up next to Ben Wheatley and The McDonagh Brothers as one of cinemas best original contributors. Apparently he has 26 scripts sold and they are all in development hell so he's an auteur now. Fantastic.

Lego Batman - 7/10 - Will Arnett is always going to carry a movie this silly to an acceptable laugh ratio.

The Duel - 5/ 10 - A solid formulaic Western with the worst ending and worst ending speech of all time.

Valerian - 7.5/10 - This is what you get when the mind that brought you the Fifth Element gets access to a huge budget twenty years later. This could have been near perfect but it bounced around like a pinball with a bizarrely uneven tone. Cara Delevigne is unspeakably beautiful in it.

Kung Pow: Enter The Fist - 7/10 - I really wish I had seen this when it came out. My tastes are less infantile now so I was cringing half the time and laughing the rest. Had I seen it aged 15 I would have loved it forever.

Blood Father - 6/10 - Eh. I love Mel Gibson and the girl was smoking hot.

The Boss - 7/10 - Funny but too much fluff not a high enough laugh count.

Traffic - 6/10 - Supposedly a masterpiece. I prefer Logan Lucky than this preachy crap. Crash is a better movie than this and Crash aged horribly.

The Grey - 8.5/10 - High tension, high adrenaline action with a fucking amazing director at the helm. This is better than The Revenant.

Narc - 8/10 - Joe Carnahan is probably the best and least appreciated director that nobody can name. Imagine pulling together a police procedural film starring Jason Patric and Ray Liotta in their later careers and having it as a point of pride rather than shame fifteen years down the line.

It's not going to blow anybody's mind but I think Dane DeHaan is excellent in it.

He looks like he should be the sickly quiet weirdo in everybody's high school experience.

Green Room by the guy that did Blue Ruin?
I thought people over hyped that a bit too much before I saw it but it's a solid film with some great characters in it.
Blue Ruin was immense.

Yeah. I pretty much agree

Frances Ha - 7/10

There were moments in the movie where I wanted to hug Greta Gerwig for being an adorable person.

Darkest Hour---movie was longer than an hour and it wasn't a horror movie like I thought. Cannot rate.

The Commuter - 5.5/10 Enjoyable shitty action movie. As movie continued to progress, so did cliche moments. Liked aspects of it, not the worst way to kill an hour or two but nothing impactful overall.

Arrival 4/10. At the end now actually but it's been sooo boring. Only a super amazing ending will make it 5/10 but that's not likely.

Arrival is one of the worst sci fi films i have ever seen. A complete and utter waste of time and resources.
The uderlying theme being that somehow Amy Adams has every right to continue down a path she knows will lead to doom. It's arrogant drivel.

I disagree. I watched it in the theater with one of my coworkers and we were both "blown away".

Blade Runner 2049- 5/5

I was really skeptical when the sequel was announced. It doesn't seem like the kind of movie that you would think to make a sequel for. That and Hollywood's current cash grab obsession had me dreading it. Especially since the first is one of my favorite movies.

Couldn't have been more wrong. They knocked it out of the park. Fucking loved everything about this movie. How they paced every twist and turn. The attention to detail in replicating not only the world of the original film, but the atmosphere. From the music, to the unique cinematography, they captured the feel of the first films world perfectly, but the characters and story allowed it to stand on it's own. That is something incredibly hard to do, and you don't see it all that often.

I love cyberpunk, noir, and the world of the original blade runner, so I'm not gonna act like I'm not a little biased, but I think this is a beautiful film, all the same.

I also love that like the original, they never definitively say whether Deckard is a replicant in this one either.

I like to go with the Deckard is a replicant theory, but I think it's great that it's open to interpretation.

GD

Didn't Ridley Scott confirm that a while ago?

Fignuts
01-17-2018, 09:08 AM
Yeah, but multiple people who worked on the film have different opinions on it.

The screenwriter and Harrison Ford both subscribe to the "Deckard is Human" train of thought.

Jumanji: 9/10 - Perfect family movie. I DETEST Jack Black, yet can admit he did an excellent job in the film. The Rock is The Rock, same goes for Kevin Hart. Never saw the original Jumanji, so I have nothing to base it off of other than the old one was about a board game, but as a stand-alone film it is great.

I disagree. I watched it in the theater with one of my coworkers and we were both "blown away".

It's lazy pseudo philosophy and it annoys me to see it dressed up as some revelatory experience.

What blew you away about it? If it was the acting then fair enough but the story was laughably stupid, remorselessly cruel and about as insightful as one of Darren Aronofsky's shits.

I tend to be vitriolic about films that cost me money and will never be played again.

My DVD/Blu Ray collection is massive and I resent "Arrival" taking up space in it.
