Yeah, then do 4 with Lundgren.

Stallone told Dolph Lundgren to hit him for real so he could get some good action shots during filming. Dolph didn't want to but Stallone kept asking so he finally did and Stallone had to go to the hospital. He punched him once... in the chest...

I fell in love with Julie Delpy whilst watching Before Sunrise, and again during Before Sunset.

I think Before Midnight is my favourite of the trilogy; all the whimsy is removed and just turns dark as Hawke and Delpy tear into one another with all their bottled-up frustrations etc.

I Am Mother-7/10

Futuristic thriller where a lone droid raises what you're initially led to believe the only human on earth, until Hillary Swank shows up and begins to plant doubt in the robot raised young lady's head.

Things pick up from there with the story leading you in different directions about what exactly is going on, building to a rather grim ending.

Yeah the remake.

Never saw the original so I didn't have a basis for comparison and the last Western film I remember watching was the remake of True Grit around a decade ago.

The film could have benefited by being around 15-30 minutes less since the over 2 hour run time didn't really help its flow or pacing at times.

Drowning By Numbers - 3/4

Peter Greenaway with another artistic, stylish series of images telling a story that is held together by a framing device so strange that I'm convinced it is too smart for its own good.

Everything I have seen of Peter Greenaway is far, far too smart for its own good. Like when you play someone legit at pool and they just beast you right off the bat so many times they have to do trick shots with their non dominant arm to keep it fun.

I get the story for the most part, but the numbers and the games are all beyond me right now. I think I have a lot of rewatching to do and a lot of reading.
I did enjoy it though, I just don't really trust myself to articulate why until I understand it better or confirm that what I do believe is actually true.

Peter Greenaway has walked into my bathroom and made me shy to pee.

Tenet-7/10 (for now)

There's a really interesting, engaging, thought provoking movie about agents and villains manipulation of time buried under a never ending bombardment of sound, base and movie score.

I found myself wanting to be engaged and enthralled in this movie, but fuck me was a lot of dialogue lost on me.

The other issue, which up till Interstellar seemed like a Nolan strength were characters, character interaction and chemistry. Here, it takes about the whole movie to reveal who the characters are. Nolan keeps everything about the main players close to the chest until the end. I haven't seen Dunkirk, but I've seen everything before it. This might be the movie I enjoyed the least.

That said, once it's up for home viewing and I can put on subtitles, i think I'll enjoy much more.

Vivarium - 3.5/4

House hunting goes badly wrong for an unwary, unwitting couple.
The film opens with a nasty piece of repulsive nature and follows on with pastel coloured pop-art sets that look like they came straight out of a housing development flyer from the 50's.
Peter Greenaway would love these sets, they look so plastic and blatant that they themselves supply a great element of unease to go with the immediately insidious storyline as well as the performance of the bizarre realtor.
Not to give anything away at all(because the plot is so small and brilliant), this is a film about a situation nobody can do anything about. They have been put there, they are stuck there and making the best of it doesn't ever seem to be a truly viable option.

Eisenberg always struck me best as a naturally neurotic character playing himself off as confident, which is a perfect reason to cast him here because he does it brilliantly and in an extremely restrained and far less verbose character than usual. He jumps from idyllic to insane pretty quickly in this film, or at least his actions would be criminally insane in any other environment outside of this one. Were I posting this on some turd website I'd suggest multiple trigger warnings for people who can't handle a bit of grit, but in the context it is completely essential to the tone.
Man and woman begin to fall apart over the course of the movie due to the malignant influence of a terrible mystery.

This is a film to think about because it explains so little and yet makes sense within its own rules and decisions. It isn't a strange film for the sake of it, it adheres to its own standards and makes the effort to give you something you can take as far as you want in your own imagination.

This was pretty much the best film I could have seen after explaining why "Knives Out" bored me enough to turn it off.
It made the effort to create a mystery, then it provided solid dialogue and story progression based on believable reactions to the premise.

I very much enjoyed and was creeped out by "Vivarium", but be warned. There are a couple of moments in this film that could be described as "just fucking stupid" if it took you even slightly out of the movie.
Luckily I was already too engrossed to care, however this is a distinct possibility with people who do not want anything particularly overt in an otherwise fairly complex little story about a nightmare in real life.

Excellent performances from top to bottom in a tiny cast makes everything more impactful. The plot was clearly set, well paced and executed well enough to induce existential terror.

I would advise anyone who has seen it or wants to see it to read the John Steinbeck short "Johnny Bear", watch the Quentin Dupieux film "Wrong" and have a look for Peter Greenaway's "Tulse Luper Chronicles" in any form you can find it in order to see similar set designs which surely had to have an impact on these.

So fn good. 3.5....maybe 4 out of 4. Ill see after a 2nd viewing somewhere in the future.

This pretty much played right into my fears as to why I'm not having kids. The idea of being trapped in what you're "supposed to be doing" is horrifying to me. Work for years on end just to be stuck in this endless cycle where you raise some brat kid and then you die.

Bleak af.

Waiting for the Barbarians 7.5/10

Stars Mark Rylance, Johnny Depp and Robert Pattinson

Set at the frontier of an empire that has a late C19th French colonial look, with Rylance as the local magistrate. Johnny Depp's character is sent to the outpost by the government to find an excuse to start a conflict with the local nomadic people (the barbarians) and starts torturing the locals for information. Rylance comes across a nomad woman who has been left disabled after being tortured and eventually takes her back to her people. On his return, he is accused or treachery and is tortured, before Depp goes off to fight the nomads.

It is a slow, quiet film and not much happens, but I found myself engrossed in it.

Curse of Chucky-5/10

An attempt to eliminate the comedic aspect of the series and be a more serious, horror driven film was a good idea but poorly executed imo.

They go for the slow burn, so everything takes it time, including the eventual reveal. But they play almost too close to the chest, and really take their time getting to the point where Chucky is knocking people off.

The kill scenes are also kinda boring. The deaths themselves are not fun or gory and pretty whatever.

The film does so an ok job of tying Chucky's past with this particular family.

Overall I wish it as more over the top in its death sequences and wasn't so reserved.

Mad Max Fury Road-9/10

2 hour post apocalyptic adrenaline rush. The jump from the first film to this one as far as backdrop goes wasn't jarring at all. The action sequences are enthralling. There's some cgi trickery going on of course, but, like the original, everything still feels and looks authentic and tangible, which only helps make the movie that much more enjoyable.

Have to shout out the score as well. It was appropriately manic, with a nice little hero motif thrown in.

Apparently there was some legal issue going on between George Miller's production company and Warner Bros, which stalled any sequels. But I'd gladly take another.

One other side note. It is blatantly obvious that Becky Lynch, at least during her steam punk gimmick days, ripped that schtick right out of this movie from one of the wives named Capable.

Mad Max 2: Road Warrior-8/10

Opening montage/recap made it feel a little like a soft reboot. Read later WB dubbed the lines of the original, it didn't fare well, and decided to just call the second one "Road Warrior", having act as a stand alone. It works.

The world is officially post apocalyptic and gas is now it's only resource. A peaceful tribe has been able to pump and produce its own fuel, whileLord Humongous and his wild tribe have been actively trying to overthrow them and take over their compound. Max finds himself in that middle, trying to secure fuel himself.

Like the last one, the stunts for their time are extreme, loud, tangible and well done. Everything hits with heft and comes off as brutal and violent. The movie is mostly a chase scene and the editing is well done.

I find myself a huge fan of this series withone more to go.

Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome-6/10

Huge tonal and structural shift from the previous films. The beginning plays out fine. Max gets robbed of his pack of camels and supplies, stumbling into barter town, a civilization built to barter and trade goods and ran by auntie, played by Tina Turner. After realizing Tina is the bad guy, Max gets exiled and finds himself among a group of children waiting for a savior to take them to their utopia.

The film very much plays like more of an adventure film, with more whimsical gags, far less violence and slower pacing. Didn't notice but found out it as pg13. It was obvious looking back.

The movie itself is good. If it wasn't a Mad Max movie with 2 excellent predecessors, I would've liked it more. But for what was the final film in the original series it was a let down outside of the final and only case chase of the film.

Dave, how far is the airport from the village you're staying in?

Let's see...I have to first seek permission from the village council so that they can sacrifice their first borns in order to collect funds for my flight ticket. Then begins the two day long strenuous trek through the Corbett national park and the Himachal valley. We find sustenance in berries, goat milk, and vindaloo curry which is native to the region. Once the aroma of human feces becomes prominent, that's when you've arrived in the mean "streets" of Bombay. We've been told that roads are coming in 2025. Traffic is a concern as cows often block travelers and aggressive monkeys tend to steal belongings. Once we reach the airport, we present the funds at the counter, and if the representative is not satisfied, we offer one of our village girls for arranged marriage. As you can see the whole process is quite complex and a logistical nightmare. I'd say a good 3-4 days. Unless they're shooting a Bollywood movie, because you're suppose to stop what you're doing and break into coordinated dance sequences as per tradition.

The Frozen Ground-7/10

Suspense film where Nic Cage tries to chase and pin down years of missing girls and recovered dead bodies to John Cusak, while also trying to keep his star witness Vanessa Hudgens safe from being taken out of the picture. A nice reminder that despite no longer being big names, Cage and Cusack are still good at what they when given the right material.

Aftermath-6/10

Arnold plays a grieving family man who loses his family in terrible plane crash after air traffic controller Scoot McNairy makes a costly mistake. This wasn't bad. It was just too short. Not enough time is spent on Arnold to get you to invest in his character arc. McNairy'd character gets better development even though he's not the main character.

Bad Day For The Cut-8/10

An unassuming Irish farmer wakes up to find his mother brutally murdered. He escapes murder himself and sets out to avenge his mom and all the while discovers truths about his mother that paint her in a different light.

The Frozen Ground is based on a true story so enjoy looking that up if you haven't yet. I really loved it when I first saw it, it's about as tense as a film can get and for once John Cusack plays to his strengths. I never liked him as a leading man, he has turned into an excellent antagonist though. See "Never Grow Old" for more Cusack in high level heel territory.
Cage and Cusack are still big names though, they just aren't blockbuster leading man material anymore.

"Black America" is a hugely weird concept in film. It's acknowledging its own minority status but appealing to an immense audience.

Pfff Topher Grace and Omar Epps could pass as brothers.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales - 3.5 out of 5

Latter half of the film was very good but that first half just dragged on too long and the overall story felt weaker than the other films in the series.

Stellar ensemble cast tells the story of the Boston globe exposing the Catholic church for sexually assaulting countless boys thru the years. This movie is 5 years old and I never heard of it. Glad I found it.

Election - 3/4

I tried to watch this with my parents over dinner but it got real smutty real fast.
I finished it at home, it was classic Alexander Payne with the naturally bizarre side of human relationships. You can tell Payne is much more emotionally intelligent than a Wes Anderson or a David O Russell because the weirdness just feels right in his films. It's not a gimmick, more of a portioning out of the extremes of human behaviour along with the more standard beats.

Good performance by Chris Klein in this. He was pretty perfect actually.

I wouldn't say this was as entertaining as About Schmidt, Sideways, The Descendants or Nebraska but it shares a lot of the style. All of his films have a closeness or a sort of comfortable confinement that keeps the world small and the people in it few enough that you know them well by the end.

Coco - 98%

So the wife and I have been trying to find good kids things to watch with our son that are both things he would like and not really stupid like most kids things. I heard this movie was good even though I can’t remember any marketing for it when it came out which is bizarre for a Pixar movie.

Holy shit this movie is incredible. It is as visually beautiful as Finding Nemo and Wall-E, the story is fantastic, and the ending caught us completely by surprise.

This was the first movie I took my daughter to see in a theater. She's been enamoured with it ever since.

I am watching "The Passion Of Darkly Noon", "One False Move" and "Defending Your Life" tonight.

So far "The Passion Of Darkly Noon" is pretty unusual and it is shot beautifully. It feels like a fairytale or a really high class porn film.
The sort they make in France with almost no sex in.

Actually I think maybe it's just 90's Ashley Judd combined with the HD creating an almost Dior or Chanel style fantasy out of the surroundings.

Pretty sexy stuff for what is purportedly a psychological drama or thriller.

Ok, this is starting to feel like some sort of old American allegory from the first settlements.
A frontier fable.
It jumps from dreamlike and sexy to full on psycho delirium in no time.

Brendan Fraser is pretty good in this. He's playing 100% against type.

This film is the right sort of strange.
Only real life could feel this much like a dream. It's all weird but it all makes sense.

I want to compare it to "The Enigma Of Kaspar Hauser" in that it could happen and if it did it would baffle anyone on the outside looking in.

The Passion Of Darkly Noon - 3.5/4

Whatever the hell this is, it went big and I can respect that.
Still trying to decide if it would cost a fortune to make despite being a confined set with only two locations. The camera quality is way higher than you'd expect for an indie from the mid 90's. I mean this would have been a great waste to see on screens back then.

It looks pretty incredible now anyway.

A weird, weird film with an ending that will blow your tits off.

8/10.
Pretty good movie, exceedingly good for a modern movie. Was really good up until the ending, which they botched imo, with "Stronk womyn" trope, but other then that really enjoy it.

Better then expected but doesn't seem like it has much rewatch material. Even the final battle was just ok.

Still better then Dark Phoenix which is a shame considering the talent in that movie compared to this.

Mystery Team - 3/4

Somebody should have put me on to this when it came out. It's not massively laugh-out-loud funny but there are some well delivered gags that keep it trucking along.

Good stuff.
Just a nice wee comedy from the start of Donald Glover's career.

Big laugh count and a lovely optimistic tone with that trademark hint of heartbreak ever looming.
Great so far.

Boy - 4/4

Taika Waititi has a 100% success rate at making beautiful, wonderfully funny films that don't look or feel the same as anything else at all.

He's the best writer/director working and he's going to be considered one of the very best of all time eventually.

"Boy" jumps straight into my favourite films of all time. The lead role was played as well as you'll see a child act, really a tremendous film from top to bottom with no foot out of place and it's easily the best acting job Taika has ever done.
