Justice League - 2.5/4

I was prepared for the worst but this was an acceptable way to spend two hours. There were quite a few solid laughs, especially from The Flash.
I had one major problem with it and that is Superman. Why go to the bother of killing off Superman if you're just going to bring him back as a fucking knob? He head butted Wonder Woman and bullied Batman like a scumbag at school. For what? To prove that resurrection turns you into a fuckhead?

Zach Snyder does things like this and it always fucks the movie out of being better than it is. He cannot help himself but mess with well established superhero protocol. First it's Batman murdering, then it's Superman destroying a city worse than 9/11 and now he has Jesus Superman battering women for literally no reason whatsoever.

This film was going well until he David O Russelled it.

Zach Snyder you are a useless knob and Amy Adams is the worst Lois Lane in history. I would have enjoyed it if Supes had battered her to be honest.

Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid - 4/4

I love well done collage films and this one had me in tears a couple of times. This may be my favourite Steve Martin film behind Trains Planes. So good. Cleaning Woman!

Still Alice - 2.5/4

An undeniably great performance with a weak film wrapped around it. If you would like to see a truly wonderful film about memory loss then the pitch-perfect "Away From Her" has a far stronger and more relatable storyline and it contains greater contributory performances from the supporting cast. I love Julianne Moore and she was great but this film is ironically a perfect example of a forgettable Oscar winner that clearly reaped rewards because the star was next in line for the win off the back of her earlier roles.

The women's Oscar categories are routinely laughable really. This happens all the time, winning for the wrong film.

Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau: 4/4

There's a guilt free schadenfreude to delight in when bad decisions collide. For anybody who feels more sated by immaculate failure than the hyperbole of success, here is the greatest exposure of Hollywood lunacy that documentary can offer.
The decadence of Overnight is eclipsed here in the flapping dislocated maw of Hollywood's equivalent of that big cat on tv who gets its jawbone kicked in half by the gazelle and can't eat so it just lays there in agony for days until finally, predictably it expires into repugnant, pathetic death. I can remember 1996's The Island Of Dr Moreau and it's amazing to me that somehow they pulled anything enjoyable from it at all. This documentary is like the asterisk that eclipses the book and it's absolutely the best film about a failed film production I have ever seen.

Magnolia - 3/4

What happens when a writer gets too bogged down in clever connections, individually brilliant pieces of dialogue and a plot that needs to be threaded tighter than an Egyptian's bedspread? You get a handful of joy bred from the train of thought that the story takes you down but not much more. Somehow all of the positives cluster up in odd frequencies and leave long patches of inert, expectation-filled fidget space.
Simply put this film could be taglined "Magnolia - Laid On A Bit Thick" or "Other People's Problems".
A lot of it seems brilliant but comes off as hugely pretentious and in all honesty it feels more like a film by the maker of Phantom Thread, The Master and Inherent Vice than a film by the maker of Hard Eight, Boogie Nights and There Will Be Blood. I prefer his earlier work but Magnolia has an epic performance each by Julianne Moore and Philip Baker Hall and a lot of wonderful ideas that are supposed to pull together and form a far better shape than we end up with. I think it would have benefited from the removal of the William H Macy storyline and the entire Melora Walters character. You get a streamlined version of the same film that way and all you lose is padding and a thoroughly poor performance from Walters which drags John C Reilly down with it which is a shame because he's excellent.
Tom Cruise was really quite spectacular in his part for what that's worth. I think I'd have made the film mostly about him and Julianne Moore's story, they had a particularly strong background in the film and the way they played their roles was surprisingly vicious. I loved their vitriol.

The Descendants - 3.5/4

Judy Greer, Shailene Woodley, Robert Forster and a resurgent Matthew Lillard provide greater support than is necessary for the strength of Clooney's performance. George Clooney has the inner acting elastic that allows him to find his range without stretching himself into an unnatural shape or becoming detached from what makes him an attractive screen presence.
George Clooney is a lot like Jack Nicholson that way. Complete and absolute charisma wrapped up in a haunted, desperate powerhouse and yet a lovably cheeky and hilarious rascal. Gabriel Byrne tries to be himself in everything he does, Sam L does it too but if you want to see real chops behind the veneer then you go see George.
The film itself sways between abject hilarity around a morbid topic and heart lifting empathy for a pure portrayal of the family dynamic.

Payne does it again. I'm a bit scared to see Downsizing now. Apparently it sucks after about halfway.

Close Encounters Of The Third Kind - 3.5/4

Richard Dreyfus is the pilot light that ignites the gas of this story. Dreyfus has a mania that fascinates me when he works. There is a level of committed enthusiasm he brings which would be absurd in the attempts of almost anybody else and it works in a film with the scope and imagination that Spielberg brings with him. Comparatively the choice to fix the film on this endearingly manic little family man when there's a world of unanswered questions within the first five minutes helps maintain the suspense and surprise of the journey.
I think another actor would have killed this movie before half an hour had run.

I am a huge science fiction geek and I find myself in awe of Spielberg for essentially directing a mental breakdown that has a happy ending. It's a film that admits nothing to you as a viewer by way of denying you every wish you think you have in the in-film universe.
Melinda Dillon is absolutely magic for all of the screen time she was given. In fact I think she compliments Dreyfus as an actor more than anybody I can name.
This is a tangible story about aliens and it feels like a long, warm ride in the back of mum and dad's car on a rainy night in 1989...it's relaxing, safe and comforting.

Something tells me Sodebergh did exactly the opposite for Solaris and it worked a God damn treat.

Sicario - 4/4

This isn't high art, it isn't politically correct, the plot sounds fairly uninteresting(even the cover is generic) and it lacks a major draw in the support or lead roles.

It's fucking great.

This is an extremely well written, acted, directed and produced film. From top to bottom there is class shining through it. In the few moments of predictability we are treated to combinations and exchanges of ascendant performances that are unadulterated manna between the moments of lead up and pay-off.
There's pathos, violence and a bounty of potent, unremitting dialogue which just knocks you back into your seat and keeps you there for 116 minutes.

Benicio Del Toro has his finest showing in both role and effort for as long as I can remember. In fact this probably is his best role(if not 21 Grams) and he is infinitely watchable and far and away the most entertaining part of the film overall.
Emily Blunt is always watchable but here she steps up to her best and delivers a character that opens the story as believably, realistically strong, focused and morally centred and by the end of the grind she is as fragile, scared and angry as an animal in great pain.
Josh Brolin and Daniel Kaluya are both excellent but I'd have to say that overall this film belongs to BDT as evidence that less is more with his particular style of acting and a bit of restraint allows him an added chance to bond with the audience.

Taylor Sheridan is one of the best writers in the business right now. To think he was killed off in Sons Of Anarchy and now he's writing hits for fun.

Watch this movie if you have not yet.

The only franchise that can compare is Bond. But even then, there was never a predetermined endgame with every film working towards that goal, with all of them meeting to make one large ensemble epic. It's a great accomplishment in its own right. Likely to never be duplicated.

Yes. Nothing of it's scope has been accomplished before. You can make a treasure trove of IP's that have at least tried to lay the ground work for a franchise and not made it past film 1. 19 is like a Gretsky or Jordan. You might have one chance to see something like this in a lifetime.

In theory it worked out so well because they are essentially adapting what is already a very richly explored universe and characters who already have 50+ years of history to them.

DC really has no excuse to not also be having great success with also having a rich universe of characters and stories to draw from and adapt..... really boggles my mind how they really can't find the formula for success, especially since it seems "relatively easy"

Nymphomaniac - 1.5/4

Lars Von Trier is a gross person with a horrendous sense of self importance. I find it hard to watch his films, even the admittedly stunning Melancholia will rip the guts out of you and leave you feeling lost.
Nymphomaniac is four hours of porn which is mostly angry, violent, sad and off-putting. I find Charlotte Gainsbourg pretentious and utterly soulless as an actress, I think this is mostly due to her relentlessly exhausting roles in films like this. She is good at playing empty, ruined humans because I get the feeling that she is one.

No matter how well this screenplay was filmed it would have bored or off put me as a viewer. This was a big waste of time and the antithesis of the sort of film I go out of my way to watch.

I think I am done with Von Trier now. AntiChrist, Dogville and Nymphomaniac are unusually bad films and they seem to have been made that way on purpose.

I suppose it's a case of it does what it says on the tin, but who wants to buy a tin of shit?

The Death Of Stalin 3.5/4

Steve Buscemi, Jason Isaacs and Jeffrey Tambor are completely glorious in this film. I have a huge respect to anyone who films a film about the Soviet Union using a heavy Yorkshire accent.
It's the perfect cross between serious and silly in that it is very silly and just serious enough that you delight in a baddies come-uppance and yet laugh at how grotesque he is. There are some truly hilarious moments in this film. A very funny comedy with an appropriately heavy dose of reality running through its veins.

Wind River - 4/4

A third triumph for Taylor Sheridan as an example of character building in a story peppered with graphic, vivid violence amidst a conundrum-steeped, overtly taut atmosphere.
Taylor Sheridan has one of the most enviable track records as a beginner screenwriter that anyone could ever hope for. Sicario, Hell Or High Water and Wind River are three extremely well developed stories with such strength of tone that it will be easy to tell a Taylor Sheridan film by style of performance alone now. In every one of these films he sets up an impossible tense situation which somehow avoids predictability despite the story's progress leaving little option for formulaic deviance and which so far has remained absolutely surprising, impactful and performed with the kind of respect and love for film making that reminds you how good acting can be when it's done in an environment where the storytelling is what matters the most.
Jeremy Renner gives a restrained performance as a hunter/tracker which reveals a side to his acting that so far has only been shown in glimpses and flashes. He is extremely likeable and sympathetic here and alongside the conspicuously beautiful yet clearly powerful, adept and slightly out of her comfort zone FBI agent Elizabeth Olsen you are given the basis of a film that seemingly lives and moves on its own.
The whole landscape becomes a character in its exposure outside the confines of trailers or homes in the expansive Wyoming wild. It's an absolutely beautifully shot film, the scenery may as well be a character the impact it has on the film and it is expertly utilised every time the characters take one step outdoors.
Let that be a lesson to other film makers right now, if you are going to shoot in a beautiful landcape then try to use it as much as possible without detracting from the tale you are telling.

The story is exceptionally bleak, a tale of unnecessary death and suffering in a place determined to afford you as little comfort as possible.

Taylor Sheridan has made three masterpieces, each one a unique tribute to a style of film making that people try to copy but often fail. This film is not flippant or glib about the topic which it discusses and it has a truly brilliantly done scene which removes all sexuality from sexual violence and renders a sane strong person cold and hateful.

Watch this film if you have not already.

Really surprised me how good (great?) this was. Thought I was just gonna kill time but really got wrapped up in it.

Did you watch "Happy Death Day" and think "Golly, I love the Groundhog's Day-esque premise, but the movie sucked?" Well, this is what you were looking for. No camp like Death Day was shooting for, this is straight drama. Zoey Deutch is great as the lead in a role that could have just been a generic teeny role. I actually started to like her and got invested in the character which I didn't expect at all.

I know some of you might see this and think its just "ok" which is fine, but this is one of the more surprising likes I've had in a while. Going to check out any other stuff the people involved in this movie put together. They did a terrific job.

I couldn't disagree more. It tried to do cheesy-chic but ended up with channel-changing awkwardness.

The pointless Swedish bint, the dreadful metal arm guy, the complete and utter waste of Merlin in some bizarre and protracted attempt to draw emotion....it was all awful but nothing can stand above the sheer fucking stupidity they showed in putting Colin "I'm supposed to be dead" Firth in the trailer.
Even for the home entertainment crowd it was ruined, they put his face on the front cover for fuck's sake.

I was appalled by that film.

Halle Berry looked fucking insane.

Where are you getting these from?

I buy them from entertainment exchanges, charity shops and auctions and the occasional full priced purchase from the supermarket.

Kingsman the Golden Circle came with The Dinner and Choke for 99p

Moviepass #64 Upgrade 6/10 there was a lot of promise to the story but it was flat although the fight scenes were awesome and also a bit hilarious. But something felt off the whole time...so only a 6

Seeing action point in like 20 min..I hope the trailer didn't use up all the funny spots

The Dinner: 2.5/4

Too uncomfortable to enjoy, too haphazard to quantify as a screenplay and too miserable to relate to. Every actor in it is magnificent though so if you like horrible tales of woe you may consider this a perfect movie.

The House: 3/4

Will Ferrell is funny again! Low brow but well timed slapstick and harsh verbal buffoonery. Jason Mantzoukas owns this movie. Forget Ferrell and Poehler, RISE Mantzoukas!

Choke: 2.5/4

Sam Rockwell saves another weird indie from complete oblivion. Chuck Palahniuk films are not good for rational minds. Angelica Houston is great but I don't want to see Kelly MacDonald playing yet another sour faced pathetic bint ever again. The one from Community gets her duds out in this so that was a nice surprise.

Shamefully I laughed several times but this is bad taste taken to an unreasonable degree. Do not watch.

Side Effects: 1/4

An unpredictable tale but one so boring as to remove all interest from it's conclusion. Rooney Mara can't carry a film, Jude Law needs depth to play a Doctor and is instead unfairly fed to the shallows. What a snoozer. I'd rewatch Gary The Tennis Coach twice over this.

Just saw Solo. I give it an x out of y (where x and y are both arbitrary numbers of an unequal value).

My only issue with the film is the "Teras Kasi" bit. Made my stomach churn thinking of that shitty, shitty game.

Convinced the only reason why all this "What if Kurt Russell got the part of Han Solo?" stuff is so big again recently is because the new guy looks like they cloned him. He does have the Ford mannerisms down, but I wouldn't be surprised if he appears in a remake/reboot of Big Trouble In Little China.

Kill Bill is horrible in review. Thankfully I was young enough to get away with enjoying that at the cinema.
It aged so much worse than Fight Club and Fight Club feels like it has been on chemo for twenty years.
I'd have to say Tarantino's best film is Jackie Brown followed by Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. When it's all said and done though it's True Romance that proved that a more versatile and productively focused director will make a better film using a Tarantino script than Tarantino himself can.

3 Billboards Outside EBBING, Missouri - 4/4

What I witnessed in those two hours is the reason why films are made, the reason why children grow up wanting to be actors and the truest form of acting chemistry I may ever have seen. This film has one flaw and yet the flaw is so tiny that it attracts interest rather than scorn. Martin McDonagh has a preoccupation with the treatment of dwarves in society and I predict that someday it may become a regrettable signature. His brother's trademark seems to be Catholicism, sex and chicanery of all kinds which is why his films seem more familiar at first.

I digress.

Frances McDormand was perfect in a role that any actress would bite their right arm off for but that none could have touched as wholly nor infused with as much of themself as Frances did.
Woody Harrelson is walking the line of genius actor at this stage in his career and I think he could actually win the big one someday soon if he gets a lead as wonderful as this supporting role was. Here he plays the sweetest role of his life and he gives everything to the film, taking nothing away with him at the finish. If the film belongs to Frances McDormand then it's in no small part due to the fact that Woody gave her his absolute finest. I really cannot overstate just how excellent the part he plays is.

Sam Rockwell is one of cinemas real heroes, an actor willing to lead, support or even job just to create something beautiful. He plays his position here like a point kicker, popping up at the right time to score points in any number of different moods and situations, each to bring a joy, a fear or a sorrow to your overworked heart by the film's end.

I try not to review plots in doing this because spoilers are a bastard, so I will say that Martin McDonagh has absolutely outdone himself here. This is a work of art.

Good review. I haven't seen it yet, but it's ranked high on the IMDb top 250 list and has stayed there consistently in a "No Country For Old Men" type of way rather than one of those Oscar movies that gets rated highly at first then fizzles out the next year when everyone forgets about it, so it's probably going to be one of those movies that's here to stay.

It's a masterpiece. I now know how Mark Kermode felt when he first saw Blade Runner. This one is a game changer to me. Those McDonagh brothers have talent pissing out of them, both create great films but Calvary and 3 Billboards are individual contributions to cinema that will last for as long as we have means to play them. Sheer genius.

The first one is just fun. The music is top notch, great dialogue along with great action sequences and story telling. I think it has aged perfectly fine over the years. I will have to rewatch the 2nd one at some point as I never really thought it kept the momentum like the first one. The first one just really flowed nicely.

Kill Bill was the project that transformed a uniquely talented trope-loving auteur into a loud, obnoxiously forward self parody. The films he made in the 90's are so far ahead of the films he has made this millennium it's as if he himself is making the films that over-influenced, over-privileged film students should be leaving education to create in homage to him only he's doing it with crazy studio money and churning out three hour films with B-movie plots with about half an hour of quality material.

He is a living warning for anybody who values style over substance. You can only borrow from so many other films for so long before people start to notice that your films are a bit hollow.
There's the obvious danger in replicating his beloved one dimensional drive through movies.

Seanny One Ball

All of his films are genre-tributes now.

I suggested Kill Bill had started that though it was probably Jackie Brown given it's a blacksploitation flick with some serious cash behind it but it's an Elmore Leonard story so you know it could work without Tarantino in another, less appreciated form.

He's too full on now, his films are Nicolas Cage turned up to 11. I saw the original Inglorious Bastards and it was more fun than his version even with the spectacular bar gunfight scene.

His best film for ages was Hateful Eight. The ending nearly killed it but that's a good film.

I'm not saying he bores me or is bad at what he does, I just wish he was doing more with the resources at his disposal than reintroducing films that struggled to entertain people with low income in the 70's.

Triple 9 - 3.5/4

The box cover and title of this exceptional heist thriller undermine the sales potential and render it an easy walk-past on the sales shelf. Thank fucking God Sicario made me stop caring about movie covers so much or I fear I would never have gotten round to watching this.

Triple 9 is a remarkably well made film. As far as heist movies with car chases and gunfights go this really is up there and John Hillcoat just keeps proving that he can make any action work for him. The visceral, shocking suddenness of The Proposition's gunplay gets an HD touch up and a modern wardrobe and means of transport; the up close and personal horrors of Lawless are turned onto a contemporary city block which oozes impurity and who's civilians carry a greater indifference rather than a wisely turned blind eye.
This is a movie to be constantly surprised by and honestly it's miles ahead of the choppily paced The Town which is itself a damned good film. If you like films that push forward and never stop or stall then Triple 9 is a good shout.
Chiwetel Eijiofor, Woody Harrelson, Anthony Mackie and Casey Affleck are all in a high gear and they are clearly enjoying the material as a rare high quality filler job between prestige projects or blockbusters.
The obvious downside to this great movie is Kare Winslet's horrendous accent. Somebody told her she could do accents, probably the same idiot that told Nicole Kidman but no. Stick to the Jack Nicholson approach and don't stretch yourselves ladies, it takes me out of a film when I hear someone trying an accent on for size.

Also who the fuck cast Winslet as Gal Gadot's sister? Egregious errors are abundant in the female side of this film but who cares, they are small parts that should have been rewritten to save minor embarrassment.

Dave Franco is incredible in that film. In the end when they do the side by side scenes from The Room and The Disaster Artist equivalent cast members you see that he has even got his speech pattern and timing down perfectly. Nobody else quite got the timing as well as he did.

I thought it was great too. Zach Efron looked so huge next to Josh Hutcherson it was hilarious. I thought Josh was quite a big kid but obviously not.
