A lot of the time I will hear about a movie that is rocking the box office or getting rave reviews from movie goers and just let it slide by me. That is okay because when it lands on me it lands at the right time for me. I've been on a Stephen King fling since I've been obsessed with "Castle Rock" and It is one of the few Stephen King adaptations I've not seen. I have seen the mini series from the 90's with Tim Curry and I really enjoyed the effort when I was a kid. For a contemporary horror film this really has it all, tons of amazing special effects, jump scares, comedy and solid story telling. I would recommend to any horror fan, especially those afraid of clowns.
I have decided to alter my rating scale to be based on my expectations for the genre. It is not fair to compare a movie like "It" to say "The World According to Garp".

I may have just seen the sweetest, most honestly incongruous comedy ever made. Too affected by it to review just now. I'm gonna take a nap and think about this uncontaminated fragment of the beautiful weird.
More people should make comedies based on their own personal idiosyncrasies.

The Dark Half (1993) - 2.5/5 Rented from Vudu for $3.99
I've continues my plow through Stephen King movies which brings me to the prequel to Needful Things "The Dark Half" starring Timothy Hutton and Michael Rooker. The story begins with a child writer who has a compulsion to write but this seems to bring a great pain in his brain. Once the pain gets bad enough he is taken into surgery to remove what is believed to be a tumor but it's not a tumor at all, but his twin that seems to have started to re-grow inside of his head. Once removed all is well. We catch up later in life and the boy has grown up to be Timothy Hutton and he's a professor who writes under a pseudonym that is very famous. The books he writes are filth but they make a lot of money. When his secret identity is compromised he decides to come out of the closet and kill off his false identity which bring unto his family and friends a world of horror. I really enjoyed this movie but it isn't great, however the acting and film making is good for the gene and time. I rate it low because it's not a knockout of a movie because the story itself is kind of stupid, but I did enjoy it.

The Death of Superman-7/10
Never read the comic but this was pretty good. Starts out with Clark struggling with his duality between being Lois' boyfriend but keeping his Superman identity a secret. A giant meteor meanwhile crash lands on earth and the being inside of it goes on a killing spree. You know what happens from here.
It was really good. Particularly the fight scenes. So damn good and better than both BvS and the live action Justice League.
Stay tuned as there's like 4 post credit scenes.

Needful Things (1993) 3/5 Streamed via M4UFree (some website I found since I didn't want to pay for this movie)
This is a fairly popular Stephen King book turned into critically panned movie staring Max Von Sydow and Ed Harris. I really enjoyed it. Sometimes it's best to ignore the reviews and just go for it. This movie is right up my alley tons of fun. Castle Rock, a new Antique Dealer has moved into town. Everyone who visits him seems to find exactly what they "need" to make them happy. The catch is that the dealer will offer a way to possess the item via task than payment. Shortly you find out that each task seems to create a web of chaos that ultimately dissolved the town into madness. I would highly recommend this to those watching Castle Rock on hulu. Nowehre near as bad as the reviews say it is. The movie features Ed Harris as Sherrif Alan Pangborn (a character featured in Castle Rock and also The Dark Half), and honestly I didn't love him in the movie which is odd because he is a fantastic actor but he didn't nail this part for me. Max Von Sydow however is fucking awesome and evil and scary and I loved him.

Yeah! It's definitely not an easy watch and requires a lot of patience. The third act is a "mind fuck" and you'll leave with more questions than answers. And not even in a Nolan fashion. I hyped myself up for the viewing via going through a couple of essays and learning more about Kubrick's intent. If you were intend to go watch it, choose the 70mm film option over digital IMAX.

How come?
No joke this is my older brothers favorite movie. He used to have coffee in the morning to the soundtrack, especially the opening with the apes freaking out. He’s weird.
If you're referring to the movie itself
The climax seems ambiguous by design and everyone interprets it differently with respect to their belief system. Which is unlike Nolan's endings which are usually limited to two outcomes.
(More information about the third act)
When the protagonist overcomes the odds and makes it to Jupiter, he's pulled into a "vortex" and a trippy psychedelic sequence begins, watching weird cosmic occurrences that he's not able to wrap his brain around because the human mind is restricted to three dimensions. Without going into much detail, the protagonist passes away and gets reincarnated into "the star child", the next evolutionary step for our species. He's then guided back to earth by one of the monoliths, similar to the one that's shown in the beginning of the movie.
And if you're wondering about the formats, Digital IMAX is limited to two 2K projectors working in tandem. 70mm film retains more information due to its size and analog nature. The colors and blacks are richer. While it can't be quantified, enthusiasts / nerds suggest that the resolution is comparable to that of 12K.
Haider - A bit too intense.
Kashmir and Hamlet.

On with my Stephen King binge...
Thinner (1996) 1.5/5 Stars
The story is about a fat lawyer who kills an old Gypsie with his car while getting a blowjob from his wife. When his relationship with the town judge and police work in his favor, he gets off with no conviction. Then an old man Gypsie appears and curses the fat man by touching his face and saying "THINNER". Day by day he begins losing weight. Eventually he realizes that he was cursed by the Gypsie and seeks to find him to release the curse. The acting is this movie is really bad, especially from the lead actor Robert John Burke. I've noticed on a lot of campy Stephen King movies that making a likable or sympathetic lead character is not a priority. Which is interesting as a viewer, and I would imagine has to be purposeful. There is so much camp about the movie that it actually adds to the enjoyment factor, because if it took itself seriously it would get a much lower rating from me. Worth a watch for a dumb fun horror movie.
Graveyard Shift (1990) .5/5 Stars
The story is of a rat infested textile factory that is completely condemned but the owner pays off an inspector to keep it open. Slowly the employee's who are hired to clean the infested basement go missing. Eventually a drifter hero travels to town and takes the graveyard shift at the factory. After proving himself he is given the double pay holiday clean up shift to clear out the infested basement within a week so the owner can double his workload for the factory. The hero joins a cleanup crew who slowly start to die from some kind of giant bat/rat creature. The creature looks horrible a total joke, and unrealistic on every level. The owner played by Stephen Macht (and the best performance of the movie by far) stars off as a dick head but somewhere in the second act turns into an all out villain, I would assume because the movie monster was so lackluster they felt the needed to at more bad guys to the movie. This movie is trash, not really worth your time even for curiosity.

It kicks off with the killing immediately so I was impressed with that especially as I thought everyone had ruined it for me only to see that it was more suitably paced than I had imagined.
The humour was pretty high in this one. Drax as usual gets some of the best laughs but overall they were spread out pretty fairly.
I enjoyed it a great deal, hopefully the next one is not one big retcon.

I am the Pretty Thing that Live in the House (2016) on Netflix - 2/5
A Hospice nurse in her late 20's moves in with an elderly novelist nearing the end of her days. They live alone in a nice home, that is haunted with the ghost of someone who used to live there. The premise is as simple as it gets and so is the movie. It's quite scary at times if you are afraid of the dark, I started the movie late at night and turned it off when it gave me the spooks early on. However when I picked the film back up and made it to the finish line I was left feeling like "oh that was cute". Not a legendary horror film by any stretch but interesting. There are only about 5 actors in the movie and I'm not sure that I liked any of them. But the film did give me the spooks due to the camera work holding certain shots long enough to make you feel creeped out so I give it 2/5.
The Babadook (2014) on Netflix - 3/5
I've been recommended this movie for a few years now and Slik pushed it on me to try so I gave it my attention. The film is about about an Australian family, mother and son who have lost the father in a car accident. The child is as most children would be being raised in the wake of a tragedy like that, totally off the walls insane. The mother does her best to cope with her son's behavior problems until the entrance of a certain book changes everything. The Babadook is a book that foretells a horror story of a monster who haunts you in the darkness, it has some cliche elements to it which actually make it even more terrifying. Everything turns on its head when the elements of the book seem to actually be happening to this family. I'm sure most of you have seen this film but the horror of the story is actually a metaphor for the grief in the loss of the father. The manifestation of the loss into a physical terrifying monster is pretty smart. I've read a lot of reviews on this over the years and I didn't enjoy it as much as most, simply because the lack of color in the film and the one set location was so dark and grey. Grey tends to bother me in a film. Though I do think that is appropriate when trying to envelope a story in grief.

A Dark Song (2016) on Netflix - 5/5
I've been on this horror kick after getting so into Castle Rock the past month. Slik recommended this amazing film to me and oh man I am so glad I watched it. The story is of a woman who wants to conduct a sort of long form seance/ritual with a guy who seems to know how to do this sort of thing. She harbors a deep tragedy and seeks to resolve her feelings through contacting the dead. The acting and cinematography are incredible. I applaud those who worked on this film, it's beautiful in its horror and drama. This belongs in the same category as a film like The Shining. Really fantastic. If you haven't seen this and want to see a really great psychological/ritualistic horror film please check it out.

Asylum (1972) on Prime - 3.5/5
Asylum is a Amicus Productions film which is a fantastic old production company of English horror films. As titled, set in an Asylum where a new doctor has been called to interview for a replacement of the current head doctor who has fallen... erm... ill. The new Doctor is tasked with going to the insane ward to meet 4 or 5 different patients to make an educated guess as to which one is the "sick doctor". An anthology film which is really fantastic and holds up with it's age.

My foreign film collection is bigger than your entire collection. I would be very upset to lose a copy of even my lowest ranked in "the collection". I have this idea that when I hit a certain number of DVD's I will literally be able to start watching my collection on January 1st and finish on Dec 31st some year.
This logically will never happen and I often give away crates of movies so I can justify buying more but I ain't far off my goal. I could do it faster but I need the space.

It's all that remains, my friend. I am pretty sure I will get rid of some titles in the near future. I do have pride in some of the titles. Especially some of the steelbook and alternative artwork variants. As much as I hate to admit it, I find myself quite content with digital. iTunes and Netflix seem to fulfill my needs for now.

Instead they were giant CGI dogs w/ dreadlocks who play fetch w/ humans and predators alike

Libeled Lady (1936) - Pretty fun old movie with good old timey actors.
Roma (2018) - Good movie, weird that this is produced by netflix as the sound design and visuals seem ideal for a theatre, very immersive. Every shot is beautiful and I found it very moving but I still think Y Tu Mama Tambien is the best film Cauron has made.

A Serious Man - 3.5/4
If 500 Days Of Summer was about a married Jewish guy with everything in the world to whine about but who somehow just wants to pull everything back together before it falls apart, this is what it would be.
Michael Stuhlbarg is a truly excellent actor and here he gives his very best type of performance. He's particularly brilliant at playing characters with repressed neuroses and seeing him in the role of a family man who's life is far from perfect is understandable and somehow extremely desirable in the right hands. The Coens are treading familiar territory here, this is a white collar, familial Barton Fink with a parallel morality to it.
Stuhlbarg is a blend of sympathetic and relatable that very few actors can pull off in a role where you kind of want to shake the guy by the shoulders and beg him to man up. The rest of the important roles are filled by lesser known actors of whom Adam Arkin and Richard Kind are most familiar to me. I was greatly impressed by the actress playing the wife, she was a savage mixture of detestable and resonant, a woman who has been sighing for too damned long and the only one who hasn't noticed is her husband.
The kids are interesting, the daughter serves as a violent foil to the son's thieving stoner boychick awaiting and preparing for his ascent to manhood.
This film is a fairly quiet little number, the comedy lies in the way situations are handled, ignored or procrastinated upon by Stuhlbarg's character and the overview that the Jewish faith is as prettily bureaucratic and time consuming as any other.
I enjoyed this film a great deal, it goes into the top half of the Coen films for me.

The Man Who Wasn't There - 4/4
A Coen brothers Neo Noir crime thriller fronted by Billy Bob Thornton may be the coolest movie description of all time. In my opinion, this is one of the coolest films of all time. It's a story about a barber who resorts to blackmail to obtain money for a dry cleaning based get rich quick scheme. His target? The man screwing his wife(admirably played by an unusually well-tempered James Gandolfini). Jon Polito plays the "pansy" salesman who sweats his way through town trying to squeeze everybody for investment capital. It's a small role but this was the sort of role Polito did better than anybody. He was also marvellous in Big Nothing if you ever get a chance to see that.
The wife is played by Frances Mcdormand because of course she is, but in this film her performance is small and funny rather than all encompassing. Her role in the film is more expositional to the aim of understanding Billy Bob's modus operandi. It's a quirky role though and ultimately there would be no film without her but this film is about BBT and his less-than-perfect plot. In fact the film moves further towards provoking the viewer to question motivations even though we know the truth of the crimes and the motivation is seemingly evident very early on.
Still though I question the acts of the man, even hours after now I wonder if perhaps this film is a probe into the human inclination toward self flagellation masquerading as a black and white crime piece.
The performances are uniformly wonderful but I single out Billy Bob, James Gandolfini and Jon Polito for kudos. The female parts are all smaller, all situational to whatever BBT is doing, whether as inspiration for or in receipt of his actions.
Scarlett Johansson even pops up as a piano playing neighbourhood kid which was a nice surprise. She was excellent back then. She has a bad habit of getting paid just for turning up now, that or directors are letting her beauty do all of the work.
Overall a perfect film, I couldn't suggest any flaws with it at all. Tony Shalhoub shows up, it's win, win, win.
Mandy - 8/10
Visually great, a bit slow of a start but once it does it's bonkers. It has the most Nicolas Cage scene of any Nicolas Cage movie (even more than Wicker Man). Also does Cenobite-type villains better than Hellraiser has in years.

I don't read comics so I wasn't carrying much knowledge of his appearance into it. Josh Brolin is in everything now and I thought he was awesome in this, he really just had to look formidable in the action scenes and to take his gags on the chin which was easy enough.

Burnt Offerings (1976) steamed on Prime - 4/5
Great 70's haunted house story. Family rents out a huge summer home and the house seems to thrive on their pain and suffering. Combining some elements of The Shining and typical haunted house flicks paired with some cinematography that reminded me of Psycho, I loved it. Solid acting from everyone, including a supporting role by Burgess Meredith.

I did enjoy this movie though I have to give it a lower rating based on some poor production quality. The story is in 1800's England, a small village seems to have a resurgence of witchcraft troubling it's townspeople and turning the teenagers into murderers. Featuring a super hot 20 something Linda Hayden in a pretty hot nude scene. The acting is okay and sometimes good, the atmosphere is great and kept me around throughout the film. I wouldn't highly recommend it unless you have a thing for 70's English horror like I do.
The Endless (2017) streamed on Netflix - 2/5
I was really looking forward to this movie, the premise seemed interesting enough. However it was over from the beginning. Spoilers ahead. The first 10 minutes of the film just reeked of back actor written script with way too much exposition to the point it seemed like the movie was going to be a docudrama and then after two direct address monologue interviews that whole storytelling style was dropped into a narrative and never resurfaced back into the docu-style.
We learn of two brothers who had escaped a "UFO death cult" 10 year prior and want to go back to make sure they didn't make a mistake in leaving. The movie picks up upon the brothers arrival to the camp, in the middle of nowhere. The community seems harmless and healthy, peaceful and loving, perhaps they did make a mistake. That is until we discover a menacing force that seems to keep those inside a certain geographic measurement trapped into certain time loops. It does get very muddled and confusing but the arch of the story is clear. This movie to me reeked of amateur filmaking with a decent investor.
Blade Runner 2049 - 8/10.
I'm not into sci-fi at all but this was solid. Amazing how actors can change. Gosling went from an annoying fuck to a good, respectable actor.

A Simple Favor-8/10
Funny, sexy, cute, smart, thrilling. I loved it. Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively are fire together. And Henry Golding might end up being a star. He's so damn likeable.
The Predator-2/10
Fuck me was this boring. The action sequences were meh. The Predator dogs, as mentioned, are useless. The plot itself is the opposite of what made the original so great. Overly complicated, not funny, the characters were dumb, the ending was dumb, etc. Twas awful.
Black Klansman-8/10
May have posted this once but oh well. It was really good. Entire cast is stellar. Little heavy handed at the end, and more than few obvious nods to the current climate. But overall a great movie. Loved it.

Cheers. I am enjoying the service as well. While they don't have a lot of indie titles near me, I enjoy their Bollywood releases.
I also am enjoying the amc stubs pass

I watched Way Of The Dragon tonight. Easily one of the worst Kung Fu movies I have ever seen. It would be funny to watch with a friend or two I think but my God was it poor. The audio is insane. The gangsters all looked like misshapen daytime drinkers that stepped out of the pub and were swiftly carried off into a terrible film to act as kick and nunchuck fodder for Bruce Lee. I was appalled by the Western baddies and the "good guy" karate guys were as wet as get out. I've seen some soppy looking bad guys in old Kung Fu movies before but they were micro budget affairs. This was crap. I like Bruce Lee less because of this terrible film.
No rating.

Fahrenheit 11/9 - 7/10
Michael Moore's latest documentary. Not as focused as some of his previous work but still got his message of the politics of fear and the politics of profits over people across. Goes after Trump but also Obama, Hillary and Michigan Governor R. Snyder as well.

The Station Agent - 4/4
A misanthropic man - who's grievance against the world around him is founded in society's treatment of his dwarfism - moves out to a derelict Railway station he has inherited, in search of seclusion.
I have spoken before about my love for films about deficient people and my love for films about the exploration of interpersonal relationships and the camaraderie of flawed people, and The Station Agent is a perfect example of one.
A blend of slow pace, realistically tempered and constructed dialogue and focused and relatable character portrayals - this is a triumph of complete film making.
Peter Dinklage is phenomenal in the lead, surely a role that brought him acclaim and increased attention as a performer.
Patricia Clarkson and Bobby Cannavale provide the necessary drag and push that the story needs to get anywhere. Clarkson is the drag, Cannavale is the push and they provide perspective on Dinklage's situation.
This is a lovely film. I'll watch this again knowing it will provoke important questions about the nature of wallowing in misery and how that can be escaped when there is something positive to reach out to.

Very well articulated. Peter Dinklage embodies the soul of the character that he depicts in the film.

Santa Sangre (1989) streamed on Prime - 4/5
This movie is insane, some spoilers ahead...
This is about a circus family in Mexico. The father cheats on his wife with a hot lady covered in tattoo's so she burns his dick off with acid so he cuts her arms off while their son watches. He's already watched his beloved Elephant pass away and just after his mother is cut up by his father he see's his father stumble dickless onto the street naked and cut his own throat and then watches helplessly as his childhood love, a mute girl is taken away by the tattoo lady his father was having an affair with. He spends several years in an Asylum until one day they take some of the patients to a movie. But for some reason this kid ends up doing a coke with a bunch of guys who have down syndrome and then he gets reunited with his armless mother who he thought was dead. He begins to act as her arms, literally, standing behind her as she tells him what to do acting as her arms, and then they french kiss at one point.
I won't tell any more, it's just fucking insane. You should see this. I debate on giving this the full five stars but there are some production elements that are a little bit off even for 89 that could have been better. Still, fucking insane. On the same shelf as Eraserhead.

The Wicker Man (1973) streamed on Shudder - 5/5
This is a fantastic film. Edward Woodward is a Scottish police officer investigating the disappearance of a little girl on a private Scottish island known for their delicious fruits and vegetables. Upon arriving to the island he notices a strange obsession with sexuality that is very uncomfortable to him and his Christianity. Realizing there is more to the disappearance than originally thought, he is introduced to the Lord of the island played by Christopher Lee. Amazing performance by both actors. Lot's of hot nudity here. The officer suspects there may be some kind of sex cult and attempts to leave but of course they will not let him. I know there is a remake of this movie but they are worlds apart. This is a fantastic film, I can't believe I'd never seen it. Not really a "horror" movie, more like a cult thriller.

Spring (2014) steamed on Shudder - 3.5/5
Slik has been suggesting this to me for a few weeks now so I gave it a go. This is like the Lost in Translation of horror films. Slightly understated at times in a very lovely way, but laced with certain elements of the supernatural and horror that keep it within that genre and unlike any other horror films you've seen. I don't want to spoil the story because a lot of the enjoyment I had was knowing very little about the happenings that were before me. But I will say this is a lovely horror film, strong acting and concept. As far as the script goes there are some times where I didn't like the dialogue, very similar feelings with The Endless. They have great concept ideas but the dialogue is a little too expository for my liking, meaning the writers is too obvious when telling the story through the dialogue. Again less so in Spring than The Endless.

It was kinda funny at some parts, but not nearly as scary (or funny) as I think it was trying to be. I wasn't angry for having watched it, but I'm pretty sure I won't be doing so again. It's nice if you kinda want something in the background while you do something else.

Mandy (2018) rented on HUDU - 4.5/5
I just watched this last night and I'm sure I will watch it again at some point because I really liked it. I LOVED the way aesthetic of this film from the lighting, the depth of the film, may have been digital but very much looked like film, the costumes, set design, special FX, everything reeked of high budget late 70's horror. I would also compare the gore to a Cronenberg style, certain elements looked like old school special fx which are dearly missed for me. Screw CGI. I'd rather see a high quality maniquin get burned instead of a CG rendering. Cage was really great, all the actors were great. The NIC CAGE moment is f'n hilarious. He's really funny when he wants to be. This is a special film, one of the best revenge films I can remember. The cult leader Jerimiah is horrifying, I hated him. I also read on IMDB the actor who plays him is an actual cult leader, creepy. If had one gripe it would be the showdown scenes were too highly choreographed, I'd rather have seen a sloppy brawl of sorts, that lowered the rating for me.

Death Wish - 2.5/4
Bruce Willis in a remade bloody revenge thriller directed by Eli Roth.
Sometimes negative hype really helps a bad movie to a half decent score. I saw what Eli Roth tried to do with this, trick us into thinking it was punch-porn masquerading as a family movie when in actual fact it's not nearly as brutal as you would imagine and aside from the ludicrously amped up soundtrack I feel it was restrained and well made for what it is.
The bad guys are cartoonishly destructive, the protagonist is relentlessly lucky and the tone of the action is dangerously close to comical in some moments.
The opening to the film is cloying and sickly but from the assault onwards it becomes a much more worthwhile film, a film that owes everything to the performance of Vincent D'Onofrio who provides some immense talent and legitimacy to a movie that seems quite nice, maybe too nice for Eli Roth to be at the helm of.
Politically it's a pro gun movie, anybody denying that is off their head. The gun fights are soundtracked so it's suitably removed from sincerity that it should be a fun movie to wind down a night out with or when your expectations are so low that it can only impress you.
I liked this film but I will probably mock it a lot from now on. It was very confused but rather sweet in a way.
Small Foot - 7.5/10
It was cute
Hell Fest - 7/10
It was a definite throwback to 80's slashers. Performances were solid from the cast, one of who was intentionally annoying beyond comprehension. Good kill scenes. I'd give it a 7/10 because it's not re-writing the genre, just throwing back to it in a efficient manner.
Disobedience - There's a certain trend that these films are following nowadays. Women being oppressed, having gay experiences, and liberating themselves at the cost of everyone around them. The patting on the back needs to be curbed just a little bit.
