Wes Anderson’s desire to make everybody in his films sound exactly the same has reached it’s zenith here. Nobody emotes at all until Jeffrey Wright shows up, and he can’t help it due to being as charismatic as they come.
I enjoyed it but I am losing my desire to see much more of this sort of thing.
I like fast paced comedies, but I need some variety in performance.
Cheer up Wes Anderson, you should try letting your cast act for a change.

OK, but seriously...:o
Spider-Man: No Way Home - 3 and 1/4 stars out of 4.
I'm going to preface this by saying that I'm giving it high marks but I didn't necessarily enjoy it personally. Much like I didn't like Into the Spider-Verse, this one didn't really grab me because I don't like these kinds of stories that deal with multiple realities and what not. There are too many scenes that harp on this subject and try to be cute about it like, "Hey, you guys get it? You get what we're doing? We're doing the thing! You sure you get that we're doing the thing? Because that's what we're doing! We're doing the thing!"
When it's not doing that and is focusing on the problems, issues, and feelings of just Peter, the film was much more my bag. Everything that he wants to accomplish and everything that could possibly happen to him as a result of the previous movie is understandable and the logical next step. If the movie was more of that I probably would have liked it more.
That said, don't let my negative nitpicking bother you. I can practically guarantee every Spidey fanboy and fangirl is going to have a blast. They'll revel in the jokes and winks to the audience and absolutely get sucked into the drama. Not necessarily my cup of tea but by all means, drink up and enjoy.
It was a fucking good time. Avoid reading spoilers and just go along for the ride.

Hereditary-8/10
Good lord this movie was creepy. Not what I was expecting and as things unraveled and got weird I found myself more and more engrossed in what was unfolding. The ending was bleak but appreciated.
Lost Girls-7/10
The actress who played Holly on the office plays a mom who’s estranged daughter she handed over to the state has gone missing after working as a hooker in a job gone wrong. It is a sad, bleak film with a strong central performance based in a real life sad story.
Nothing like the Holidays-6/10
Typical Christmas family fodder a movie with a Latino spin on it. The story is cheesy and smarmy and predictable, but the performances, namely Alfred Molina, is what carries it and makes it worth the time as a holiday filler movie

Watched 'Parasite' recently, and although I haven't actually seen any of the films it beat out for best picture I think it's probably deserved. I've loved all of Bong Joon-Ho's prior films for their uniqueness and absurdism and this was no exception. The best I've heard it described is as a more perfect version of Snowpiercer. Highly recommended.

Cosmos - 6.5/10
In reality my score is probably a little high but I like this kind of movie. Very low budget sci-fi flick about some guys parked in their station wagon in the middle of the British woods. They set up some telescopes and gear to monitor a satellite and some other things but get side tracked when they pick up the mystery signal. I've watched a lot of these kind of movies. Most all of them suck in the grand scheme of things. But this is one of my favorites I think. Just felt good the whole way through. Really liked the cast.
Either way, I had a good time watching it and wouldnt be against seeing it again I think.

The Matrix Resurrections is possibly the worst sequel ever.
It’s worse than Jaws 4: The Revenge.
Really weird feel to it... lots of backwards steps in trying to re-ignite some enthusiasm for the classic gimmicks of the original. No thanks. We don’t want some weird inner-universe retcon shite. We have Marvel for that. It’s trying to be meta even though it naturally is already, so you end up with a weird imitation of a weird imitation of a once great idea. None of it works at all. It’s just a mess. Kind of like the director’s vagina.

I know there's more praise being heaped upon it but maybe the long stretch of Disney and Pixar movies without musical numbers in the story spoiled me. I'm not a fan of this type of music but I'll credit the songs for actually being helpful in moving the story along. These kinds of movies are more about a catharsis and it hits the right notes in getting its message across. I don't know if it's something I'd watch again but it works.

Entertaining enough, but also bland. The wokery was tedious, as was the appearance of Harry Styles.

This one has been on my radar for a long time; I just never got around to trying to watch it. Not sure if it was worth the long ass wait. It's probably the weakest of the Blumhouse lot, at least the weakest out of what I've seen. Ethan Hawke carries things well enough and even though this whole set up is ripe with cliche it's not particularly boring or offensive. Bughuul could have been scarier. Actually, he should have been scarier because the fake outs and jump scares are kind of annoying.

Spider-Man No Way Home-10/10
Perfect for what it is and delivered exactly everything I think a Spider-Man fan could’ve ever wanted. And I LOVE that there were consequences. Permanent consequences. My one gripe with marvel movies outside of the last two Avengers movies is they didn’t have anything seemingly permanent. At least not that I could remember that was on the scale of this one. I wonder if they keep Spider-Man going under the joint studio efforts. It’s certainly worked out for everyone and college student Peter could be fun.
I’m also glad Andrew Garfield got his redemption. I liked him as Spider-Man and him and Emma Stone had great chemistry smothered in a really bad sequel. I’ve read he’s a huge Spider-Man fan so I’m happy he got to have one more good around in the biggest way possible. Same for Toby.

i think that is the brilliance of the film. all 3 spider-men get a narrative that adds to their canon and rewards audiences of all 3 franchises in big ways.
both of the previous spider-men's audiences didnt get closure for the characters but here we get some long needed catharsis from a story that juggles 3 seperate long term protags and gives them all satisfying arcs and in the case of the 2 dormant ones enriches them in ways that allows the audience to be rewarded for loving them along the way.
its really smart and handled with a deftness that sony typically lacks.

The scene where they’re sharing the tragedies that catapulted them into devoting themselves into Spider-Man as a way to relate to MCU Peter and tell him without telling him everything is going to be ok and that May’s death has purpose was easily one of the best scenes in the film. Toby killed it. The warmth and welcoming way he carries himself with, the reunion with Doc Ock, and the look he gives MCU Peter as he saves Osborne. Just perfect.
The back popping scene was also great as an add on to his little back line in the second film. I remember laughing at that bit when the second film came out and I was pleasantly surprised they added a little more to it.
Does anybody think Andrew will get another go around in the next venom?

Spider-Man: No Way Home - 4/4
The imperfections of the opening hour turn into a reason for the beauty of the following hour and a bit.
This is one of those films that people dream about, a fan-script come to fruition.
It’s fantastic and it feels like a real life comic book. Seeing Toby and Andrew again was so fulfilling in the way that the story played out.
This should be called Spider-Man: Fan Service, because it gave me everything I ever wanted from this character all at once.
Awesome. Completely awesome.

Garfield’s emotion is insane. It’s not the only movie he’s done it in but man, did I feel that emotion when he saved MJ. I was really looking forward to watching it with my wife when it comes to streaming but I’m not sure where it will land. The other 2 Sony/MCU movies aren’t on Disney+ (at least not in the UK) and I didn’t want to have to pay for another subscription. looks like i forgot to rate it in this thread.
the remake fails to justify its existence. my stance would be if youve seen west side story skip it but otherwise this is a perfectly good version to watch. it doesnt do anything new or interesting we havent seen before but it does everything very well.
the dance numbers are very well shot and choreographed. all the vocals are as good as they ever have been. theres no knock i have against this version but there's nothing about it that has anything fresh either. in fact when watching it i was confused as to why Spielberg made it at all.
he had had nothing to say that hadnt been said. best i can figure he just loved the play and wanted a modern version to exist for his own sake.
tl;dr if youve never seen west side watch it. if you just love west side and want to see it again watch it. if you just like west side ok enough pass on it. youve already seen this movie.

there is some cultural significance thats lost in the remake where originally both the sharks and the jets are 2nd class citizens where as now only the pueto ricans are held back by racism and the irish are not. its a bit irksome to have this important historical truth scrubbed from the film but i dont think anyone involved was prepared to have an honest conversation about the cultural significance of assimilation so they elected to just have the irish have white privilege instead but whatever. its standard modern perception even if it does an entire culture a disservice.

I am a big Paul Thomas Anderson fan and so when I heard the good reviews for this movie I was excited to watch it. It's a very psychological film in a very easy going way, filled with great characters and a pretty wild but realistic story for the environment it's set in. I think of all the Oscar movies that I've seen this year this will be the one to bear the most rewatches, and may become a classic down the line.
Cooper Hoffman is just like his dad, really cool to see him here. I would've given him a nod for best actor to be honest, what a great performance.

The Batman-9/10
Third act kept it from 10 and it’s just under TDK for me at least for now. This movie was Chinatown meets Seven. A sprawling mystery that unravels more and more of a mess that can’t be cleaned up, and a morderte leaving clues hoping he’s found only to turn it against the heroes.
I thought Pattinson killed it. Very different Batman than shutting we’ve ever seen. He’s in damn near every scene and he’s suited and booted for the majority of the film. And he talks. A lot. Loved his voice. This is likely the most comic accurate Batman we’ve ever seen. Very Long Halloween/Hush vibes with how he carries himself.
Rest of the cast was great. Farrell was great as Penguin and LJ will be happy to know he’s an integral character and set up to be bigger as this series progresses.
Reeves knocked it out of the park. Easily, IMO, the second best Batman film behind only the dark knight. I’m gonna see it again with my brothers this weekend. Can’t wait.

The Batman- 8/10
I truly dont think this film will surpass the nolan films for joe movie goer but this is for the most part what i had been wanting to see on screen from batman for my entire life. a grounded noir detective film with action elements.
the cast all hold their weight very well. Pattinson is obviously the stand out but everyone is very good. the score becomes good but starts very poor (more on that later.) the film doesnt rush through its plot. it takes its time in both narrative and in the pacing of the scenes which really works to its benefit.
the score in the 1st act is terrible. im watching batman stalk through the darkness into the light for his big reveal and its completely generic. its not until the batmobile is introduced that the score finally does what a batman score should do: BRASS. why they would save the iconic batman sound for the vehicles introduction...ill never understand...but from then on it gets really good. by the end of the film its iconic and powerful and amazing but it lessens the introduction in a big way.
its subtext is also paper thin and rapidly becomes text in several moments toward the end which drops it a few points for me. non-elegant.
another thing worth endless praise is how this is the bes origin film perhaps ever. and make no mistake: this is an origin film. not telling how batman got the skill set or the money but how he decided to become a hero. i think that has major resonance and it really stands out for me.
all in all batman works best when he's not portrayed as a superhero and now there is a live action version that will let him explore the character from a much more grounded level and im very interested in going on that journey with them.

OK, I'm clearly not the target demo for this film but there are enough elements that resonate. It loses a bit of luster since we've seen this kind of story and lesson before in other films. Hell, Pixar pretty much did it with Finding Nemo. The catch is it's done in a fun way that lets it stand on its own. There are some legit funny moments in this and it's good to see Pixar continue with these kinds of small scale stories. The side characters are great, especially the circle of friends of the lead. There's at least one of those kinds of people in everyone's group. I don't think it needed the climax that it had but it's fine. It still doesn't crack the top five as far as Pixar films go but worth a watch.

Was alright. Was PrettyCool to see a film set in Toronto and really embracing it rather than the usual "filmed in Toronto but being presented as another city even when I recognize places" that is common in live action movies.....
Nice @ being set in the past just so they could still call it Skydome.....

The Power of the Dog - 6/10
The film has remarkably little to say so I'll say remarkably little about it

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III - 6/10
Wasn't as bad as I was expecting, or maybe since my expectations were super low I didn't mind as much. Mega 90s kids movie vibes.

Took me a while to realize you weren't talking about Hamato Yoshi. I've done extensive work to try to erase as much as I can about that film from my memory.

The Batman 8.5/10
It is bum-numbing long, but I was digging everything about it. Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz, the cityscape, the overall vibe. I liked them going the detective route, rather than just another bombastic blockbuster.
It looks like they might be setting up the Joker for the next film, but I hope they don't; do something interesting with one of the more obscure members of Batman's rogues gallery instead.

I think its more likely that we will see the Joker in the third installment.

I feel like we might see a no man’s land/Arkham city style story given the city is underwater and things are wide open
X- 8/10
Ti West continues to be one of my favorite horror directors. Like all his stuff this one is building to something and it takes it's time getting to the splatter...but it's a damn good trip there. Easily the best cinematography he's had yet, very fun soundtrack too. If ya watch it, stay tuned through the credits because it does something no other A24 horror film has done
a teaser for the prequel, which was already filmed, and looks insane...making X the first horror 'franchise' for A24

Turning Red-8/10
Funny coming of age movie about a little girl in Canada who inherits a family curse of turning into a red panda. This movie was clearly geared for preteens, discursively girls, and the typical jokes are hilarious and were unexpected. It’s also very zany in a way Disney movies usually aren’t. Was getting anime vibes from how expressive the characters were. Loved it.

Wanted to add something else, which is not obvious while watching and most people won't realize until post-film, so read at your own discretion
Mia Goth also plays the old woman, totally unrecognizable and she does a fantastic job

Lights Out-7/10
PG13 horror movie that does a good job of being really creepy despite not having much gore and minimal body count. Movie about a mental ill mother who’s just two husbands, and has somehow summoned a shadow demon that cannot attack unless there’s no light.

He has the most emotive face in the world.
He’s a natural born talent who will never win the Best Actor Oscar despite having more quality in him than the material ever will.
His agent needs lining up and shooting because he is killing him.

How did Denis Villeneuve not get a best director nomination for “Dune”…
Getting “Dune” right should have its own award.

Garfield really does need to get a new agent.
Or just start reading the screenplays before he commits to the project.

Memento- 8/10
clever premise. good execution. supporting cast really outshines Guy Pearce who i think really holds the film back. if you do this film with a better lead it probably ends up nolans best work.
i enjoyed the themes of self, truth and self deception. the film takes an outward look at these things but in reality its really about how we lie to ourselves to paint a world we can live in. to give us meaning. i think that really rings true.

Block Island Sound-7/10
Sci-fi thriller that never quite gives you the big monster you would think it’s hinting at, but it’s good and the ending brings it to a nice finish.
Antlers-7/10
Possessed monster movie about as kid hiding a secret in a drug riddled Oregon town. Sad but effective

The Bubble - 6/10
the social commentary is good. taking a piss out of both the film industry and covid is refreshing. hopefully we will look back on the last two years like this film does with utter disdain and complete mockery of everything we did and were subjected to. i enjoyed Gillan and Pascal quite a bit.
that said for a 2 hour comedy most of the gags didnt land and its a bit of a mess that doesnt know how to end, a point the film is aware of and might make for an unintentional allegory.
lots of good cameos though...still ultimately this is basically Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back complete with dick jokes and weed humor.
Apatows best work might be behind him.
