The funniest is the 2nd, 2 Fast 2 Furious, best overall I would say is Fast Five, although 6 and 7 were really solid too.

Actually, I want to throw 4 in as well. 4-7 is the best stretch.

Thoroughbreds (2017) - 8/10

Really liked this. For a 1st time writer/director this is very well shot and very well directed. If this was the first thing i had seen Anya Taylor Joy in id assume she was going to be a star. A lot of whati liked though isin the script and i think what makes it work is these characters are constantly acting in ways i couldnt predict.

Predict isnt the right word. I deliberately try to not predict where a narrative is goingu less the film is specifically asking me to. Unexpected perhaps. Their agency all works in the confines of their characters but with the exception of Olivia Cooks character no one is particularly forthcoming with who they are. This made for a pretty captivating watch but i think in the context of this post the less said the better.

The film markets itself off a review quote of something to the effect of "a teen-girl american psycho" and while this is not in the same universe of quality on paper, as a premise, i can see it.

Elemental - 3 1/4 stars out of 4

I don't care how much money it did or didn't make. This is the kind of shit from Pixar that I enjoy. It's beautifully animated, incredibly creative, and, yes, touching and cute.

It's a love story at its core, supplemented by a lot of allegorical points that will probably go over the heads of really young kids, but it will absolutely hit a bullseye and resonate with people who have gone through the predicament of the protagonist and her family. It's a bit long for the story it's trying to tell and there are some groaners as far as jokes go and what they're going for is stuff you have no doubt seen in other movies, but sticking with it to the end is absolutely worth it. When you've got some gasps and 'awws' from the audience, you're doing something right. I'm still waiting for the Pixar film that's going to knock Inside Out off my personal perch of being my favorite, but I will absolutely watch this again.

Baxter (1989) - 8/10

Absolutely loved this French film about a dog. Baxter is a bull terirer. At the time its was the Rottweiler of its era. Illegal in the US even. Baxter is a dog looking fpr the right master and the story unfolds from his perspective with the narration being his thoughts. The issue is he's a sociopath.

The movie goes to some pretty dark places but its also really funny. Its not streaming anywhere but if you ever get the chance id recommend it.

This was so much god damn fun. Fantastic modern take on classic horror. I might put it on the bottom. Need to rewatch Crystal Skull and Temple of Doom. Raiders and Crusade easily the top two.

I like the villain and "quest" in Skull better, but it has weird Shia Lebeouf stuff. I like in Temple that he is actually still young and vigorous but it does feel a bit off put together with the rest of the series.

I’d give creed 3 a 3.5. It’s bolstered by Johnathan Majors and how he clicks with Michael B. But the franchise is tired and Tessa and Michael B have anti chemistry. His deaf daughter is annoying—not the little girl herself, I’m just bothered by her conceptually.

Creed 1 was really good. Creed 2 is a struggle. Creed 3 falls in between. Oddly I liked the last fight but I find all of them pretty boring for the most part so I can’t fault anyone for finding this one boring.

“The Far Country” - 3/4

James Stewart turns up in town, annoys a nefarious, hilariously evil bad guy and spends the whole film trying to avoid his ire even if it means vulnerable townsfolk take the shit instead. He of course comes good in the end, but it’s great seeing James Stewart play borderline assholes.

“The Man From Laramie” - 3/4

James Stewart turns up in town and annoys the family that own and run it. He spends the rest of the film trying to get his own back on the bastards. The ending to this one is all over the place, but it’s a lot of formulaic fun.

“Bend Of The River” - 2.5/4

James Stewart tur… actually he’s already part of a wagon train from the start of this film and he rescues a fella who turns up in a lynching. The guy isn’t black just in case anybody gets confused by the term lynching there, the only black guy in this film is played by “The laziest man in the world” Stepin Fetchit…. Why do I feel like a really angry trap rapper is going to re-appropriate that name someday soon if not already? He’ll probably have pierced cheeks, tattoos instead of eyebrows and purple hair.
Rock Hudson makes a crack about not being “the marrying kind” in this film. I like that.

That completes the Mann/Stewart western pictures. They were as formulaic as the Randolph Scott “Ranown” cheapies were but it’s all good stuff to be honest. Every star of the Western has their own style, so it’s hard to rank them properly but very easy to point out their differences.

Randolph Scott is the most gentlemanly and oddly not the least intimidating even into his fifties.
James Stewart is the most realistic in terms of not glorifying himself with his roles. He’s downright sneaky and arguably cowardly at times.
John Wayne is the most boorish and also most intimidating, charismatic and powerful. He’s actually a very good actor in his post WW2 output, especially as his age allows him not to be presented as immortal anymore.

I’ve only got a few Peck, Widmark and a couple of Wayne films left on the list.
I even watched “The Ballad Of Lefty Brown” the other night just to see if a greenhorn like Bill Pullman could carry a Western. He did pretty well all things considered.

“The Ballad Of Lefty Brown” - 2/4

There was a lot to admire about Bill Pullman’s performance here, and it’s one which should have carried a far far better film. The script is poor and the storyline has elements which should have been stripped away so it could be a straight revenge-driven western instead of the awkward morality tale/tragedy it’s supposed to be. I think because so many modern revenge driven westerns came out around the same time(Ethan Hawke, Mads Mikkelsen and Emile Hirsch all did better films) this one tried to distinguish itself from the pack by being more desperate or even pathetic but it’s competing with films where families are murdered so it’s in need of a good whack of action and it is sorely lacking in that too.
Unless you love Bill Pullman, watch “The Sisters Brothers” instead. That’s a unique take on hunting man in the old West.

Awesome set pieces great cast, and really fun and often intense movie. Tom Cruise still the man.

It’s funny that the big stunt that’s getting all the hype while really impressive and is OMG inducing still doesn’t have the full affect that they would have wanted it to have. Basically it doesn’t come off as impressive as it should.

The movie is not as good as the McLegend dubbed “action movie masterpiece” that Fallout is.

Valdez Is Coming - 3/4

Burt Lancaster playing a Mexican in his fifties on a revenge mission. Essentially it’s about a man trying to right a terrible wrong and the obstacles he must overcome in order to achieve it, but it’s filled with well written violence and the odds are so laughably insurmountable that it makes Die Hard look perfectly reasonable. I like revenge movies, every impressively physical actor should do one.

Lawman - 2.5/4

Burt Lancaster in a bloody violent Michael Winner directed western. It’s about a man who is rigidly bound by ethics and who refuses to consider morality before he fires his gun. It’s basically a less refined Valdez with the blood coming a lot cheaper and with less class. Burt Lancaster is tremendous in it and you can clearly see the top billed actors doing the hard work. Robert Ryan is somebody I have really grown to respect after watching him in so many of these films lately. He might be the poor man’s Henry Fonda at times, but he had his own style and man did he make some great movies.

The Duellists 7.5/10

It is a tale about a feud between two French cavalry officers during the Napoleonic era, which lasts for 15 years, and involves five duels between them over those years. On one side you have Feroud, played by Harvey Keitel, an arrogant brute who is driven by his ego and his idea of honour. On the other side you have D'Hubert, played by Keith Carradine, both a victim of Feroud's warped inclinations and a prisoner of his own sense of honour.

It's a simple tale, but executed well by director Ridley Scott. I generally don't like American accents in period films/ tv shows, unless set in the US, but I didn't find the accents of Keitel and Carradine distracting.

Oppenheimer - 7.8/10

Was good. I think it was maybe a bit too long though. Went through periods of being boring and then periods of "I'm on the edge of my seat". Could have made something more succinct and it would have been awesome. Also feel like maybe shooting on IMAX cameras is a bit "wasted" on a movie that is mostly just talking heads. Still impressive to see, but compared to his other movies I have seen there that have action sequences in it, it makes this seem less impressive somehow.

The Big Country - 3/4

I’m onto the tail end of my Western viewing, I saved all of the 2+ hour films for this moment.
Gregory Peck is one of, if not the actual best ever at playing straight laced guys with serious steel behind the veneer. One of my favourite films of all time is “The Million Pound Note” and it’s because Gregory Peck is relentlessly decent and upright throughout. In his western films he has the same quality and it is what separates him from contemporary Western stars. Randolph Scott and Roy Rogers always play the good guy with the heart of gold, but Peck makes it a credible enterprise by having the eloquence to deliver a phenomenal line or speech between fisticuffs and high drama.

As far as the film goes it has the most predictable love story ever put to screen besides some of the most entertaining western shenanigans. Burl Ives steals the film with a “yeah we are low class but we have morals” character that makes it an almost Shakespearean experience. The good is faultless, the bad is evil but the grey area is pure entertainment and it elevates the film from formulaic to fantastic.

Blue Beetle - 7/10

Was ok and inoffensive. Took no big risks and wasn't anything we haven't seen before. Feel like DC keeps trying hard to make Jaime Reyes "happen" via multiple comic book series, featuring him heavily in cartoons, and now a movie.... but he just never seems to quite catch on.

I didn't like the end where Jaime just lets Carapax kill Victoria Kord... felt like a "heroic moment" was coming where Jaime would talk him down and Carapax would fly off to finally "live his own life". A shining heroic moment that shows exactly what kind of hero Jaime has become, saving his enemies and believing in the sanctity of life and all... would have been a "great moment" and put the spotlight on Jaime and that "true kind of heroism" that comes from a "good heart" and all that. Instead, he just kind of watches.

If anything, this movie just made me want a Ted Kord movie since the best parts were The Bug and all of Ted's gadgets. In fact, just doing a Ted Kord movie would have been better than this and more "original". Could have even used the same plot with Victoria Kord taking over the company and using it for the OMAC Project. Having a main hero with no powers who wasn't all grim and didn't have any tragedy or accidents that made him be a hero would have been "unique" too.

Then the post-credits scene where they tease Ted Kord for a sequel is like... "yeah, I really would have just preferred a Ted Kord movie now"

Frankie and Johnny 7/10

A romantic comedy/drama starring Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer. Pacino's character is a little bit too needy and cloying, but Pfeiffer puts in a great performance as someone who has emotionally closed themselves off after successive abusive partners. Some might say, and they did at the time, that Pfeiffer is far too beautiful to play the lonely, dowdy waitress that she portrays in this film, and to a point she is, but her performance outweighs that complaint.

Pacino and Pfeiffer also benefit from some great supporting cast, especially Kate Nelligan as their man-hungry co-worker.

The Fisher King 7/10

A Terry Gilliam film starring Robin Williams and Jeff Bridges.

Bridges plays a radio shock jock, whose advice to a radio caller leads to the latter shooting up a night club, killing seven people. Several years later, having spiralled into alcoholism and depression, Bridges encounters the husband of one of the victims of that shooting, who is now homeless and dealing with mental illness. Thus, begins a tale of weirdness and redemption.

It's a Gilliam film, so if you like his off-kiltered brand (Brazil, 12 Monkeys, etc), you'll probably like this one. Williams puts in one of his better performances.

Funny enough i considered that but ive seen basically none of his big box office successes. Rock films ive seen:

1. Moana- his most culturally significant film easily and its great.

2.Southland Tales- i loved it

3. Be Cool- forgettable

4. Pain and Gain- cant be sure i finished this one

5. Walking Tall- not a bad action flick

6. The Rundown- ok at best

7. The Scorpian King- shouldve been straight to DVD

8. The Mummy Returns- love this movie but he's not really in it

That said hes had some huge box office wins. At a point he was the highest paid actor in Hollywood so theres was clearly a market for his generic action films (that i totally passed on.) But ultimately i felt like id seen so little, especially of his box office wins, that i really coukdnt contribute to a conversation about it.

Ate all my typing time of the rock post. Not a bad film. Plaza is really good here. Shes not very versatile as an actress but when she's in her niche i love her and she carries the dramatic role really well.

The film on the surface attempts to illuminate a point about the american debt crisis but very subtly underneath that is a strong counter point against the surface level clamorings. The counterpoint is subtle but its there and its appreciated.

The Russia House 7.3/10

An espionage film starring Sean Connery, Michelle Pfeiffer, Roy Scheider and James Fox.

Connery plays a book publisher who is contacted by a Russian scientist, via an intermediary and Russian publicist played by Pfeiffer, who wants Connery's character to publish Russian military secrets about the ineffectiveness of the country's nuclear armaments. The scientist's book to Connery is intercepted by British Intelligence, who subsequently enlist him to go to Russia to figure out whether what they have is actually credible, which involves going through Pfeiffer's character.

This is an old style of film; no shootouts, no explosions, no chases. It is all about the story. I think it could of done with a bit more pep, but perhaps that is just my modern sensibilities. The ending is also a little bit too overly optimistic. However, I enjoyed it all the same. It was a bit weird watching Connery mooning over Pfeiffer, considering the age difference (I can't blame him; she is stunning in this film). Both leads turn in top notch performances; Connery actually felt like he was putting effort into the role, rather than relying on his natural charisma to get through a picture.

It was also great to see a movie set in Russia actually be filmed in said country. I believe it was the first western movie to be done so.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017) - 8/10

Its certainly a challenging film. It lives in metaphor wrapped in greek mythos and for a general viewing audience this is the kind of the film that would leave most people asking not only what did they watch but why. For those who enjoy a dense film riddled with layer upon layer of deep subtext you'll find this pretty rich.

Its a comedy blacker than midnight that skirts around into psychological horror at will.
Lanthimos other film i loved, The Lobster, is 70% comedy where this is maybe 20% or less though. Which is fine of course but if you're expecting something tonally similar this isnt it.

The acting (Leads are Colin Ferral, Nicole Kidman and Barry Keoghan,) is really excellent but like The Lobster its unconventional. The dialogue in delivery and writing is rigid. Like cardboard. Its unnatural and delivered in a way that feels false. Like we're spectators at an alien zoo trying to understand how these creatures interact with one another.

This falsness is deliberate though. The cinematography has the same wrongness about it. Everything is shot with the framing off. Characters faces oddly out of frame or off center in weird ways. The score often runs antagonistic to the scenes. All deliberate. The film using your cinema vocabulary to allow you to fill the gaps emotionally but also narratively.

All this comes together for a very weird retelling of a greek myth in a film that never holds your hand. If you like weird and darkly funny morality tales this is the kind of movie you can watch a multiple times, and you probably should.

I could bump it higher. This movie is better when Zachary Levi is the only superhero.

When the movie started out I thought it was going to be really bad, but I was wrong. I enjoyed it, and I think this is actually a good family movie. Also to be fair there isn’t anything original or great in this, but it was a good watch.

This is another DC movie that’s definitely not as bad as people say, and mark another loss for The Rock since is movie is weaker of the two.

I didnt choose to watch this but it wasnt as bad as i expected. Film spends a bit too much time on things we dont care about. IE not bears murdering hikers. When it is in its element its pretty funny and theres a few jokes that really landed. Though i do have to say i dont think the writer has ever done cocain. Also there's a fight scene in a bathroom thats clearly choreographed by someone thats only ever had fights described to them.

All that said this is a fitting film for Ray Liotta to go out on as it perfectly encapsulates how mediocre most his films were. Formulaic and uninspired.

Period drama starring Glenn Close, John Malkovich, Michelle Pfeiffer, and very young Keanu Reeves and Uma Thurman.

Glenn Close and John Malkovich are great in the two central roles of master manipulators and competitors/lovers; their scenes snap, crackle and pop. Pfeiffer also stands out in the supporting role, though Malkovich's seduction of her does not entirely convince, which I think was perhaps down to some poor editing choices, but that is a trifle. Keanu is the one dud in the casting; he's just not meant for period dramas.

You gave it a 6/10 and I’d give it a 2.5/4 so we’re pretty much in agreement that it’s a fine way to spend the time. I like John Cena. I never really watched him wrestle and I can say the same about Batista but Cena is picking projects that I can actually enjoy. I think getting his toe wet in comedy was the right way for him to get into Hollywood, he could realistically transition into drama if he has any interest. The guy can act, I think he is actually the best actor out of the wrestlers-turned actors. The Rock is fun, Batista is fun but John Cena is actually gifted as a performer in a way that makes me think he could be the top dog if he keeps his trajectory.

Cena man… I cannot say I saw him as a great actor but he has done so well I can’t even doubt him now.

I think nearly any other film tried to have a plot as absent as this and it would produce an unwatchable mess but here i think it really works. The actors and the writing holds you firmly. You want to hear more. You want to see more. You want this despite technically having nothing going on in a larger narrative sense.

The viewer, or at least I, easily get the impression theres something more to know. Whats the angle? That sort of thing. Im a bit too tired to really dig into this but i liked it. I loved the last shot. Perhaps a PTA trope but his ability to give a massive ammount of information in the closing moments is possibly as good as it gets. Sydney does clean the blood off. He just covers it up. This moment tells us, atleast perhaps, why he pseudo adopted John C Rileys character. He's stained with the past but perhaps has can cover his soul.

Intolerable Cruelty (2003) - 9/10

Among the Coen's funniest works. The script is as sharp and witty as anything theyve ever written and moves at the fast pace O' Brother Where Art Thou. The cast, led by George Clooney, is really excellent. Even Catherine Zeta-Jones holds her own though admittedly she is the weakest part of the film.

The climax to Wheezy Joe's arc is one of the funniest gags ive ever seen. Billy-bob Thortons bit is also excellent.

Joel is a very competent director here too. He puts together dozen or more ways to shoot the same rooms that keep it visually interesting while the cast delivers this top shelf dialog.

At is core its a romcom but it also isnt. It stands next to them in almost in a meta commentary mocking the genre. Here the Coens strike a norm macdonald-esqu snicker that only he could do where we and him are somehow cohorts in the joke he's crafting.

Its sarcastic and ironic and insincere and somehow in the face of all that its charming. The only real critique i have is due to its comedic insincerity its climax is by nature insincere. Perhaps there was better way to resolve the picture but atleast as it resolves it manages to still be cute, funny and little bit witty.

Triangle of Sadness (2022) - 8/10

This is a film that really couldve taken the easy way out and still had the clapping seals rolling in the isle but instead takes the hardest route it can and tears everyone down along the way. Its really impossible to talk about the film without REALLY talking about the film.

The film is divided into a 3 act structure. The 1st act would be best described as modernity. We focus in on products of our era hightened to the extreme. They trade on beauty, models and social media influencers. Theyre vapid, shallow and dim. And the film rips them to shreds.

The 2nd act sees our leading couple onto a cruise with the most affluent. The most powerful. Their beauty is no longer the tradable commodity it was but its not without value. Still next to the rest of their shipmates theyre small potatoes.

This section could most aptly be described as capitalism. And like before its a scathing critique. It doesnt offer any counter point, its teeth are out and it attacks without mercy.

The third section sees our cast shipwrecked. Neither beauty nor currency are useful any longer. Only 1 survivor has any usable skills and she uses her skills for the good of this small society. Making fires and catching fish. Keeping them going. But she uses this "altruism" to take power and becomes a dictator making dogs of them all.

This section could be called communism. And its just as critical as any section before.

A lesser film, a more modern film, would not have included this 3rd act. Its in its inclusion that the film becomes interesting. Its where its dialogue exists. In its closing moments it raises the question "which of these societies is worth holding on to?" It deliberately doesnt answer and it deliberately doesnt paint any in a positive light. It shows them at their worst examples and rolls around in the filth.

I like this movie series. Perhaps liked this one more than the others because I have not actually read the book it is based on and so the "reveal" was actually a reveal. Was "worried" that this movie was gonna be "scary"... but was not scary at all

I find this post to be very triggering. It's a clear violation of my boundaries and quite frankly, the level of microaggression being displayed towards the LGBTQ+ community is reminiscent of a bygone era. Wake up people! The future is gay! It's cute that straight people think they're still in control.

Passage to India 6/10

A historical epic, based on a novel by E.M. Forster and directed by David Lean (Dr. Zhivago; Lawrence of Arabia, etc), set in India during the British Raj of the 1920s. The film mainly focuses on the relationships between Aziz Ahmad, an Indian doctor, with a number of colonials, including a teacher at a local college and two women newly arrived from Britain, one of whom accuses Aziz of rape after experiencing some kind of episode in a mystical cave. The film also studies the prejudices and political tensions of the period.

At 2 hours 45 minutes long or so, I found my attention wandering at around the 90-minute mark, though I almost switched off in the early stages as I found the Aziz character so obsequious and child-like that it irked me. However, Judy Davis, playing the woman that accuses Aziz of rape, and Peggy Ashcroft, as her older friend, both do well in their roles.

The Equalizer 3 6/10

They didn't even pretend to create any sort of adversity for Denzel's character.

Even though its weak, I did like the Italian setting, and I liked the darker tone (they weren't light films to begin with), which is why I give it a higher rating than it probably deserves.

Watching “The Mill” now, good opening. Like a Squid Game type set up but with L’il Rel in it. I watch a lot of films with subtitles on nowadays just because I hate missing dialogue but sometimes it turns up some odd mistakes… right now the caption claims a guard is whistling “Yankee Doodle” when in fact it is clearly Beethoven’s 9th Symphony “Ode To Joy”.

Annoying.

Seanny One Ball
10-11-2023, 04:32 PM
L’il Rel is so watchable, even when he’s playing a dumbass.

I’m coming to terms with how quickly I’d buckle and embrace the situation in the film rather than fight it. I’d have a better game plan though.

Seanny One Ball
10-11-2023, 04:54 PM
This film is a lot better than the reviews suggest, it’s almost a horror version of “Office Space” and the psychology is spot on. It’s not hard to watch a film that focuses the camera on L’il Rel for the duration, he’s great.

Watching a highly rated horror that sucks and makes me hate teenagers called “Talk To Me”. It’s not scary, it just keeps setting up situations where I think “kids are dicks” with a side of “I cannot sympathise with this level of stupidity”.

Killers of the Flower Moon - 7/10

Screen play has numerous fundamental issues. Its more of a court stenographer than a narrative structure. Lacks any adversarial element until the 3rd act, 2.5 hours into the picture. Jesse Plemons should have been cast in DiCaprio's role. Both the script and the editing could have used some oversight.

Loved the 3rd act though. Definitely saved the film from being a 6.

I don't think it was a bad movie. Even the ending was an interesting choice. I thought Kaitlyn Dever was fine except for the parts where she'd breathe heavily and make noises from her mouth to compensate for the lack of dialogues.

White Mischief 6.5/10

Romantic drama set in Kenya during the early 1940s, starring Charles Dance, Joss Ackland, and Greta Scacchi. Scacchi's character marries a much older member of the landed gentry (Ackland), and they relocate to Kenya. There, she starts an affair with Dance's character, who is a captain in the army and is part of some social circle who seem to be bonking one another. Dance's character is subsequently murdered, and the husband is put on trial for the killing.

I don't know what to make of the film, other than Scacchi's boobs are divine; I didn't know she had such a nice rack.

The Painted Veil 7.5/10

Film adaptation of W. Somerset Maugham's novel, starring Edward Norton, Naomi Watts, Liev Schreiber and Toby Jones. I haven't read the book, though I'm generally a fan of Maugham's work, so I can't say whether the deviations from the original source material (which there are) are for good or ill. A great story, however. Norton and Watts, especially the latter, give fine performances, and Jones is as dependable as ever.

There is some serious scenery porn; I would love to visit the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of China.
