I agree with this. I really don't get it. I mean I roll my eyes when Triple H will be doing an interview and say stuff like "we're not trying to compete with AEW" despite very obvious business decisions to the contrary. But again, it's a business. If I had the ability to move my show live to take market share away from a competitor, I would do it 10 times out of 10. It's a no-brainer.

But you read the comments from WWE and AEW fans on Twitter when the ratings come out every week and they all just sound like petulant children. Why can't we be happy that there are two wrestling shows on Wednesday night? If you have a preference that's great but what real value is there in actively rooting for one side to fail?

Was into AEW for a bit mainly because of Jericho, but stopped watching like a week or so before he lost the title.... I had already fallen behind and had been resorting to pretty much fast forwarding through anything that wasn't Jericho....

But not even Jericho is enough to get me to keep watching rassling these days....

I still record RAW/Smackdown/AEW every week, but pretty much delete them right away..... should probably just cancel my auto-recordings.....

But, um, do you know who is currently in a blood feud with Chris Jericho? He’s a 5’10, 161lbs indy darling, whose whole gimmick is that wrestling is bullshit and you shouldn’t try at the start. When he started getting shit in on Jericho, people actually tuned out of Jericho segments. A closing segment where he Superman Punched Jericho, and Jericho bumped himself (I say that, because it didn’t look like a reasonable transfer of kinetic energy at all) through a table got beat by NXT by an alleged 300k viewers. It did 165% of AEW’s audience.

They absolutely do the shit you say is poison. And it is poison. You just haven’t come across it yet, haha.

I just wanted to put in writing that at this time I am not definitely purchasing All Out 2020. I will have to be sold. I blindly bought all of AEW's PPV's and let one fact be known, I've never regretted it. But, AEW isn't getting any less (leg) slap happy and I'm not down with Tony's presence on social media and trying to obviously "win" people over with his wrestling markdom. I really need to get of Twitter probably. I really miss looking into the audience and seeing excited children reacting like they are having the time of their life or laughing because the show is ridiculous and they know they can flip off this big bad rassler and nothing will happen to them. Or that old couple that is dressed the same as they would if they went out to dinner at a decent local restaurant. I want to see a woman there with a group of her friends that think the wrestler is hot but also love the action....

I hate markdom.

So tired of tools all wearing black shirts with EXPLOSIVE logo's, shaggy hair, and beards. I am tired of hearing wrestling fans chant their stupid chants too. The only thing that needs to be chanted is THE NAME OF THE WRESTLER, ASSHOLE, AND USA. Anything else can fuck off.

Excellent post. It’s the environment that wrestling has cultivated though. WWE ran off a lot of fans, now all that are left are the hardcore fans. And AEW wants to coddle them than even try to get back people who had the sense/ability to leave.

You’re not going to get that back unless promotions start to put on actually good content. Pro-wrestling shit, and not sports entertainment. That euphemism has actually become a legitimate genre because the WWE introduced their tropes and they’re so internalized that even those who say “Pfft, WWE — we’re better than that” copy.

It’s the TNA argument to me. “How can people actually want a wrestling company to die?” Because while it keeps a certain amount of talent employed (debatable if they get paid), it keeps talent worth a shit in a dungeon, and pollutes the wrestling scene with bad content. If you think of wrestling as a “franchise,” it’s harder to relaunch a franchise if it’s putting out turgid content every year, year after year. Sometimes you need to scorch a forest to grow new trees.

I’m at the stage where I’m apathetic to AEW. Fuck them, I don’t care if they go away. The cunts were happy insulting my intelligence and taking the best opportunity in pro-wrestling in over two decades and wiping their jizz dicks all over it. The schadenfreude of their failure would be real. But I still love wrestling and want something good to come along. That’s why I get a stiffy at the idea of The Rock starting a company, or AEW’s disrespect of Punk making him say “hold my Pepsi.”

Wrestling is bad. People just want it to be good. The tension comes because the people who claim it is good are standing in the way of that goal. But AEW are successfully running them off, so ha. Then we’ll just be left with Vince again. Yay!

Meltzer and Alvarez have not helped. Have they started criticizing AEW yet? Went to give Alvarez a listen and had to quit when he tried to paint NXT as WCW, whereas AEW actually has people teleporting and is a promotion where the egos have creative control.

I get why it’s important to them that AEW succeeds. As fans and business owners, they force themselves to watch WWE. That’s hell. After sitting on a cactus for 20 years, sticking your dick in a vise must feel nice. They’ve also got nerd subscribers to cater to. And AEW is a promotion kind of based on their “educational principles.” This is the son of a billionaire who has read every Observer and The Death of WCW. You can’t easily call him incompetent without pissing on your own electric fence.

But that colors opinion. There isn’t proper wrestling criticism out there in a large sense. Meltzer and Alvarez won’t call this one over for their good guys until Tony Khan is walking the streets like Orange Cassidy, and that affects online opinion. WWE = bad, AEW = good.

If you want something more of the level of Cornette, PWInsider was that during the early months of the AEW vs. NXT war where almost everything AEW was doing was getting picked apart and NXT's issues were mostly ignored. That pretty much changed after a few months when the effect of WWE becoming more hands-on and the changes made to NXT started to become more of a detriment to the brand.

It didn't really matter that they were women, although it was admittedly novel to see such great women's wrestling. The draw was the quality of the content. AJW from early 80's to late 90's is fantastic.

But then Japanese idol culture took over Joshi, and it's spawned an army of creepy man baby fans who actually use japanese phrases like "kawaii" in day to day speech as if that's normal. There's still a lot of great Joshi wrestlers out there, but the scene has absolutely suffered because of the culture shift. Less focus on athletic ability, and more focus on looks and marketability has led to lots of shitty wrestlers getting pushes when in the past, they would have been kicked out of the training group on week one.

I imagine it's a similar mentality from the Sasha and Bailey worshippers, as you put it. Admittedly, I batted hard for them early on, during the nxt days, but that was because of how good the matches were, and because it gave me hope that we might see the same AJW level quality in women's wrestling as a whole in the US. That didn't pan out, obviously.

All that said, I get why fans would get really attached to Io, because she's REALLY good in the ring. Sasha too, when she's not trying to break her own neck. But there are absolutely people who take it to far.

The young girls that used to make the fanbase in Japan all grew up and now make up the majority of New Japan's fanbase. That's why Stardom got such backlash for having a match at Wrestle Kingdom. Fans want to oogle Tanahashi's pecks, not watch women's wrestling, with an aesthetic that appeals directly to male incels.

Is it an entirely new thing? "Celebrities" have had their toxic fans/stalkers/obsessives for a long, long time. I do wonder if it's just that the more adjusted and measured fans have been run the fuck off. Now all you've got are the gate-keepers. At least when something has a general appeal, they disappear into a crowd.

I have no doubt that companies have played into this. Joshi is absolutely nauseatingly...fucking creepy. I've been going on a bit of a kick of AJW recently, and it's great shit. They're actually trying to have matches and stuff. That Emi Sakura seems like a Japanese ringmaster leading her sexualized performing lionesses to the ring. She gives off this Japanese Moolah vibe.

AEW and WWE have both catered way too hard to that online contingent. It's a strategy that was mocked hard even 10 years ago. What was the saying? "About 5% of wrestling fans are on the internet." Oddly enough, I don't think that statistic has changed, but the internet has just gotten louder and more influential, while the audience has just gotten smaller and smaller (including the online one).

I would like to see them bring Satomura in as a one-off challenger to Asuka. While you've got these joshi who can do shit, run their matches and see if it takes off, or at least adds a temporary flavor to things. Asuka vs. Kairi Sane, Asuka vs. Meiko Satomura, Asuka vs. Io Shirai -- all three could be solid matches that would spark smark interest and would get you through three months.

That Physicality is what had been missing in women's wrestling in the states. It's no coincidence that the best women's matches in WWE are from women like Asuka and Charlotte, who aren't afraid to lay that shit in.

Dark has been very hit-or-miss ever since they started empty arena shows. Been a lot more like old WWF shows in terms of leaning heavily towards squash and jobber matches for quality and less of what it was prior. Mix of them catching up on lost time for records purposes and providing a reliable paycheck to more people during these coronavirus times.

In regards to Takazawa, he apparently helps out a lot with backstage work and as a go-to guy for the company's Japanese talent. They just use him on-screen whenever they want to freshen things up for a jobber or a comedy match.

Archer was never a main eventer. Harper is already done and has the worst gimmick of all-time. Cage will be done too. Hager is not a main eventer. The story is Jericho and Cassidy.

Because I'm obsessed with wrestling and want to see the industry get better overall. I watched the show this week and gave my honest opinions. Why is it okay for, say, Smeat to post his thoughts about SmackDown, but I can't do so about Dynamite? Is it because the truth stings?

People have come to these forums talking about how shit the general product is for about twenty fucking years now (since it really started going to shit). It's now a problem? It's now "weird?" You're just insecure about your opinions.

I do get enjoyment seeing people get frazzled by negative comments about AEW. Some of the excuses that fall out of the tree are absolutely amazing. But I think criticism of this sort of thing is important, especially if people want something other than a Vince McMahon monopoly.

700k viewers on Wednesday night with a bad parody of sports entertainment is not going to make Vince McMahon change direction. He just announced an Eye for an Eye Match. He's more assured than ever he's got an untouchable slice of the industry, and you know what? He's fucking right. These guys have proven Vince McMahon right. The closest they came to looking serious was when Brodie debuted on their first empty arena show after the pandemic.

But then most of the stable was lost to the pandemic. Uno and Grayson who had been the focal part of the stable until that point had to go back to Canada. Plus for that set of taping at QT Marshall's gym all of their New York based talent were unavailable, so they didn't even have Silver and Reynolds despite them being the patsies of the group.

It was just Brodie on his own, recruiting guys like Preston Vance and Allen Angels who were just there to help fill out Dark tapings. And that's when they started changing the direction of the group.

I think you could have Brodie/Uno/Grayson massacre the rest of the stable should they ever decide to turn it serious again but I really enjoy the idea of a cult managing to only recruit complete nincompoops.

I’ll preface this by saying that I generally enjoy AEW. I watch pretty much every week and I’m invested.

Now with that, AEW has some issues that are just so obvious and so frustrating to watch unfold. In my opinion, most of their issues are fueled by ignorance and arrogance.

For example, instead of using their television to create their TOP stars, AEW already believes that Cody, Omega, Bucks, Hangman, etc are top stars who should be used to get low-mid card guys over. I’m sorry, but that is fucking ridiculous.

For example, Cody is doing his best impression of “2015 Open Challenge” John Cena, but here’s the difference: Cody isn’t NEARLY as over as John Cena and Cena was “pushed to the limit” by guys that had a strong upside (at the time). Cody should be crushing talent in 3-4 minutes on TV to establish that he’s a top champion.

Many people rip Vince and his Yes-Men for living inside a “bubble”. It seems as though the brains behind AEW also live in their own bubble where just because smarks in Chicago pop big for your matches, that it must mean that you’re “over”.

I truly want AEW to succeed with steady growth so that they can elicit some true change in the business, but at this rate they will NEVER make it that far. AEW will exist and survive due to their current, loyal fanbase and deep pockets, but this company has not demonstrated any maturity or desire to grow much further than what they currently are.

Besides post-show interviews for events, that might be another area where they borrow from NJPW in regards to match mentality. It does tend to make the power gap between the top talent and lower tier talent smaller during matches but at the same time, also don't run into the same situation as WWE where you have a huge chunk of the established roster that is utterly useless and dead weight in terms of appeal or care.

Stunt's style of work can be very hit-or-miss but tend to find him more enjoyable or effective when he's doing quick stuff or not being the real focal point for matches for stretches at a time.

According to WrestlingInc, Zack Ryder/Matt Cardona's deal with AEW is for 5 shows in length with the potential of it being turned into a regular deal afterwards.

Wrestling Inc. has learned that Cardona is currently working on a five appearance deal with the company. While that can change, he is currently on a short term deal.

AEW did something similar with Riho when it came to her intital deal since that was also for 5 shows and due to her not being sure about wanting to wrestling in the US at the time.

Jeff Cobb also had a per-show type deal but his didn't go beyond two shows but he wasn't interested in a long term deal since it could have impacted his NJPW career.

Honestly, I feel like the best use of any person that is worthy of being made money off of is to beat the fuck out of the goofier people who were only signed to piss Cornette off (This should have been Brian Cage. or Lance Archer. or Brodie Lee.) Have them just run through them without as much as breaking a sweat. Maybe have one of their heroes (Allin or Cassidy) actually catch him off guard and come close, only for him to snap and destroy them. I'm talking about actually have them do an Unprotected Chair Shot to the head, and have the guy carted off. THEN you put them against a Cody or a Page or a Mox. And you have one of the goofs show concern for whoever like "I don't know if facing this guy is a good idea."

As a sub-thing with that, you maybe have Luchasaurus see the writing on the wall and stop doing shitty half-speed kicks. He turns on Jungleboy and becomes a monster in his own right. Marko Stunt tries to reason with the big guy, and gets shelved for his trouble.

And you have a few built in stories for Luchasaurus: The revenge angle from Jungleboy. The actual stars vs. him. The inevitable Monster vs. Monster feud.

As for Slurgate with Excaliber. This would be the perfect time to bring him back in sans mask once the whole thing boils over.

And I will provide these booking services and more for half of what he's paying one of the Executive Vice Presidents.

And if you're going to have goofy fuckbuckets on your roster (which you absolutely SHOULDN'T, but that ship's done sailed), the best you can do is treat the goofy fuckbuckets like goofy fuckbuckets who get murdered by folks who are worth making money with before putting them up against real stars. This is the problem, you don't know jack shit about the realities of the industry you're commenting on.

It's called contractual liquidated damages for breach of contract.

It would've almost certainly cost USA more to breach the contract than what USA would've received (net) in ad revenues from airing wrestling, no matter the differences in ratings, demos, or ad revenues. Not because of a lack of "quality" viewers, but because, even back then, almost every TV broadcast agreement for a broadcast like that, is made at least a year in advance, and the minimum damages specified for breach of the agreement for failure to broadcast on the date and time specified, are drastically severe by design.

That's because without the guaranteed time slot, there will be a lack of pre-paying sponsors to pay for the needed early or advance costs of production or pre-production that the broadcaster doesn't cover. That's not even getting into the minimum amount of liquidated damages for the reasonable anticipatory profits for the show's producer, which in addition to the broadcast rights fees, also often includes an anticipated minimum amount of profit for the producer for an increase in the amount and $ value of potential live tix sales, merch, % of food/beverage venue or vendor sales, etc.

This is the problem, you don't know jack shit about the realities of the industry you're commenting on.

It's called contractual liquidated damages for breach of contract.

It would've almost certainly cost USA more to breach the contract than what USA would've received (net) in ad revenues from airing wrestling, no matter the differences in ratings, demos, or ad revenues. Not because of a lack of "quality" viewers, but because, even back then, almost every TV broadcast agreement for a broadcast like that, is made at least a year in advance, and the minimum damages specified for breach of the agreement for failure to broadcast on the date and time specified, are drastically severe by design.

That's because without the guaranteed time slot, there will be a lack of pre-paying sponsors to pay for the needed early or advance costs of production or pre-production that the broadcaster doesn't cover. That's not even getting into the minimum amount of liquidated damages for the reasonable anticipatory profits for the show's producer, which in addition to the broadcast rights fees, also often includes an anticipated minimum amount of profit for the producer for an increase in the amount and $ value of potential live tix sales, merch, % of food/beverage venue or vendor sales, etc.

Those would be quite difficult in television, because TV schedules are constantly changing, and broadcasters would retain the right to preempt for special events—sporting, news, emergency, etc. Also, the WWF would likely angle for one too. And why would these no longer be commonplace? Why would producers cede power to networks’ scheduling when there is precedent to suggest they don’t have to?

And like with WCW getting canceled, if there was more money in the wrestling, they’d have gone with it, which you admit. Arguing that the dog show people are a juggernaut is not exactly a great counterpoint to “wrestling has never been that powerful.” You’re essentially saying “You’re right. The dog people had bigger dicks,” which is the point.

Remember when you tried to slip past people that an increase of 0.10 in the key demo would lead to an exponential increase in rights fees? This would value Monday Night Raw at $540 million a year. Man, USA must sure be grumpy about that deal. :lol:

This is...interesting. Rock has been pretty “Go everyone!” when it comes to wrestling. That being said, I’ve got the sneaking suspicion that Rock will one day start up his own company or back another one. It’ll be interesting to see if anything comes of this relationship. It’s probably entirely inconsequential.
