lets say you see a commercial for a new tv show and it looks amazing so you check it out. the show didnt draw you in the marketin team did. so you watch it and you fucking love it. you come back next week. the 2nd weeks numbers are a reflection of the previous weeks product.

failure to retain new veiweship is a sign of a product that didn't hook an audience. in this case you had a large number of 1st time AEW viewers who came strictly for the punk draw and found no eeason to come back.

im rounding, its slightly more than 10%. 135k was the previous peak. so thats max AEW without punk. show after his debut drops to 145k. so thats 10k new customers generated. the punk draw was up 90k MTD. so the 145k is 11.11% retained

That’s not what anyone’s said, and you know it. There is actually the possibility of PPV-to-PPV growth too.

Yep. And it was also Danielson’s first PPV match with the company, and Cole’s first PPV match at that level ever. It didn’t keep people as interested as All Out did. Pretty simple.

Destor talking some sense. They’ve bought their way to a higher “normal” buyrate than what they were on, but does that slight increase justify the costs? And what does it say about the product that it cannot retain off its spikes?

I wrote a decent breakdown of this a few days back in response to Damien also making that claim.

WWE gets $16 million+ a month from Peacock for those PPVs they "devalued". After the PPV providers cut, AEW would need to sell about 2.5 million for their quarterly PPVs to come close to the money WWE makes from their PPVs. Or in other words, AEW would need to get 12 times more people to buy their PPVs that bought All Out when they had all the buzz possible.

I guess if they could get every person who watches Dynamite to buy each PPV three times for no reason, well then they might be able to actually brag about their PPV revenue.

Of course, that would not make up for the money they do not make from their TV deal. $45 million a year for 3 hours of weekly TV is about $285,000 per hour. Or in other words, WAAAAAAAY less than what Tony Khan is paying his roster.

AEW is able to put on a good product because they are alright losing a ton of money. They are only successful because they do not have to run as a sustainable business. If AEW had to run only on the money they earn, they would have to cut the expenses a lot. That would mean guys taking big pay cuts, or being outright released.

Look, I like what AEW is doing far more than when they started. They still do odd things, but the good outweighs the bad. That said, no they are not a successful company. Its the opposite of what you said, regardless of how much wrestling fans like us may enjoy AEW, they are undeniably a unsuccessful money losing company and to say otherwise it’s just being willfully blinded by fandom.

The truth is either every wrestler is lying about getting "the best contract and money" of their careers, or AEW is undeniably losing money. I also think I gave AEW more credit, assuming they get a 50%/50% split of the PPV money (that was the deal WWE had when the Network came out, based on the goal of a million subs). As a new company, AEW probably doesnt have that good of a deal, but for arguments sake that is what I based my post off of.

AEW is not a public company, neither is any of Shad's other ventures, so they can say whatever and we cannot disprove it, but based on the numbers we do get like PPV buys and TV deal, well they just do not support the claim that they are doing anything but bleeding money.

Its fine, im glad Shad is willing to let Tony lose money because it gives us more wrestling, but no amount of smoke and mirrors is going to validate the idea that this company is anywhere close to profitable.

Agreed. I also worry about the ratings, because they have backed themselves into a corner with the whole 18-49 demo being the end all be all.

I have heard Tony Khan allude to the fact that AEW should get a massive deal in 2024 when their current TV contracts are up. That is wishful thinking though because AEW's average viewer age today is 48, so if they cannot get new younger viewers, by 2024 their average fan age will be 51. What happens when they are getting 900,000 viewers but their 18-49 demo is significantly lower because the majority of those people are now in the 50+ demo, which AEW has basically claimed does not matter.

That massive TV deal they are just assuming will come will certainly change the outlook of the company if it doesn't.

That’s why it isn’t generating new fans, no matter how hard some hardcore fans campaign to the lapsed fan or people who have never been into wrestling. The people who have stuck with wrestling remember when it was good and just have some neurotic tick that keeps them plugged in.

People seem pretty convinced that Kevin Steen is going to AEW, but I think the darkhorse to leave might actually be Shinsuke Nakamura. Not because I think he feels unhappy, or disrespected in his current role. But I can see Tony Khan opening up the wallet to him, since he’s probably a mark for his New Japan work. And having him does allow TK to lease him out to New Japan of America and whatever.

The WWE will obviously make a large offer to keep him, because he is a value add, but they’ll also have a cap on that and an expectation on dates/touring. I can see TK paying out the ass to have the guy show up much more rarely to try and present him as a special attraction of sorts. So even if the style is more physically taxing, it’s also possible that he’ll be doing a much smaller amount of work a year for more money.

He probably feels a bit of loyalty to Vince, who I do think is a fan, but the difference between $950k and $1.2 million and how each promotion is going to feature him could be what potentially seals it.

You keep hearing all these different things about Chad Gable’s contract and when it comes up, but he’s another guy I see leaving. Again, not because I feel he wants to, per se, but I can see AEW offering him main event money to come in and work with Danielson, Punk, Omega, etc. They’ll treat him like their Kurt Angle.

The WWE are likely to make Gable a reasonable offer, but it’ll probably be good for a mid-carder with no real creative laid out for him. I can see him taking the AEW offer to Vince and being like “What can you do?” and Vince being like “You should take that offer. Go out and get it done and I hope we talk in a few years time.”

For as crowded as the roster is, guys who could be available in the coming weeks/months like Johnny Gargano, Kyle O'Reilly, Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn...all of these are guys you have to bring in if they're interested in working for you. You can always find room for those kind of talents.

But that's why a guy like Tony Nese, while I like him well enough and he's a good hand, his signing just feels kinda extraneous. I don't see a higher ceiling for him than being a heel version of what Matt Sydal is.

Gargano, O’Reilly, Steen and Generico all add value. The perception of acquiring talent is worth it alone. There are talents in AEW you can cut.

My issue isn’t with the signings so much as the talent they keep around, and the deal they make out of some of the signings. Tony Nese and Bobby Fish probably didn’t need that much fanfare.

If I am Gargano I dont know if im leaving. He is NXT, and I dont think he would ever get any higher than low midcard in AEW. At least in NXT he always has that lore of the heart of NXT. I heard Kyle O’Reily talk on nxt 2.0 for about 30 seconds and realized he’s just a big dork and decided I don’t want him on my TV. It doesn’t help that I view him as a wish app Bryan Danielson with the complete opposite amount of charisma. I don’t want him in AEW. Gargano I feel the same. They have a lot of guys like him already. Keith Lee is the big name they should go outta their way for. This is an excellent post. Yeah, I think it’s pretty disingenuous of people to say they don’t attack people for having opinions that “go against the grain” (even if those opinions aren’t that uncommon outside the context of a particular internet discussion). And I have to be honest: Since AEW has started (largely) getting a pass from stupid shit, it really has made me re-evaluate WWE, and you’re right. And put it marvellously.

No, not all of it is good. Of course not. But a lot of it people just want to be horrible or are actually not as smart as they think they are when they discount it. And a lot of that is, in my opinion, perpetuated by a lot of the “wrestling media.” For example, you will Dave Meltzer criticise WWE for something he won’t AEW. Kidnappings was a semi-recent one I remember.

I feel like AEW is at a sort of potential crossroads. They are coming to the end of deals on a lot of the initial signings and there is a plethora of name talent available to sign from ROH and WWE especially, not to mention NJPW stars.

AEW definitely is trying to develop some younger talents like 2.0/Garcia, Darby, Lucha Express, Starks and others but it's hard to imagine guys like Strowman, EC3, Jeff Hardy, Gargano, Keith Lee, Wyatt, The Briscoes, Bandido, Jay White and so many more getting overlooked for some of the guys on the roster right now.

I mean if AEW had to lose Moxley and Jericho for whatever reason, they have so many options to fill those spots. Not that I want that to happen btw but you never know.

Initially I was underwhelmed with AEW's roster because they lost a lot of potential talent to NXT deals and a few to ROH and others to scandals. But now AEW could have a super talented and quite famous roster, one that would top what they've had so far.

I'm ready for a new year in AEW. This year was they Omega run which mostly was just okay, only really got interesting before the Barbed Wire Match and then in the summer.

I hope we get a fresh AEW for 2022.

There is lots of talent out there. And they will offer almost everyone deals. The problem is that with a finite amount of time, stories are only going to be able to be given so much emphasis. So they’re either going to need to expand (bad idea…in theory), or start picking and choosing who they need to focus on (good idea…in theory). The problem will be when acts that shouldn’t be focused on, but are popular with the AEW audience (Orange Cassidy, The Dark Order) are either dropped or kept. If they are dropped, AEW fans might be run off while newer audiences don’t necessarily find the product. If they are kept, it doesn’t matter what you do — no one can take anything on that show seriously. Add Brock Lesnar throwing bitches around and it’ll still be capped at a certain level.

Like with WWE, I sadly think the only way forward with them is to expand to the point that the negative influence of the person in charge can’t infest every corner. WWE needs to have so much content ordered that something outside Vince McMahon’s scope makes it to air in a prominent context. Hopefully Tony Khan buys ROH and someone else books it with access to CM Punk and Bryan Danielson.

I do understand the gripe that Punk feels like "another guy" now. I assumed he'd make sporadic appearances and only wrestle occasionally, not be a weekly fixture. Listening to him in interviews it really sounds like the passion got reignited for him and he's wanted to wrestle a lot more often than he thought he would.

It's one of those things where, you managed to get a guy back after a 7 year retirement, you really gonna tell him "nah, we can't bring you in every week" when he wants to do it? Would be hard pressed to make that call. He doesn't feel like a special attraction, but he's still getting one of the biggest reactions every week.

I have no issues with Danielson though. That dude bleeds wrestling, I always assumed he was coming in to have bangers every week and he's delivered.

lol it would be a great gimmick. Cena shat on the Rock during their feuds for being a part-timer but when he got called out for it later on in a different feud (a Roman one I think) he kinda just shrugged it off and was like "yeah, you got me there". Felt like more could've been done with it.

Nothing Punk has done to me has amounted to much of anything. I also dont see how it gets glossed over that he is WWE CM Punk. He has the same music, the same shirt, the same promo, the same moveset, and the same gimmick. He hates WWE for holding him back, yet with complete freedom he is doing exactly the same thing he was doing in the place that held him back? I was very lukewarm on the idea of Punk joining, and it has played out exactly like I figured.

Danielson has been far better, despite ill fated heel turns and draws in big matches. Nothing Bryan himself has done has been bad, and AEW not taking full advantage is on them.

I do not think Tony Khan is capable of booking any other style than how he has for 3 years. Other than debuts and some of the stuff Cody has been in (like getting squashed by Brodie and Black), has AEW done anything that we didnt see coming from a mile away? Not that its bad to have a lot of that if it pleases the fanbase, but how many 6 or 8 or 10 man tags are we supposed to care about?

This was their first BIG special show in months, and not only did they fail to get a million again, they went down in their demo from last week. I say THEIR demo because it is all they care about, but I think we are getting to that point I was talking about a while back. The average age of their viewers is going to roll over to 50 sooner than later, and then what? If that demo is truly all that matters to TV providers, then they are in deep shit when that demo keeps falling.

And that is the problem with booking the way they do, they have not obtained any new fans, and they maybe retained 5% of all lapsed fans who have given them a fair shot. They all pat themselves on the back so much they are oblivious to the fact that they have dropped the ball every time they have heated up whatsoever.

The excuses for AEW’s declining ratings are hilarious:

* The West Coast difference. Sure, this is thing that does impact live viewership. But that doesn’t explain why the ratings decrease week-to-week (outside TV specials). It also doesn’t address why AEW was put in this situation in the first place. Could it be Warner prioritises the value of other properties that make them more money?

* They’re building a loyal fan base before they expand. Yes, I’ve read this one recently. People are actually trying to praise Tony Khan for neglecting wrestling fans and instead going after the most hardcore of the hardcore. Never mind this “hardcore” fan base has been whittled away over time.

* They’re focusing on their international expansion. Have I missed something? I can find the announcement of a deal in Subsaharan Africa, India and the Philippines in 2021 — which are important markets, to speak nothing of the actual deals — but there hasn’t exactly been some groundbreaking movement in this area. I don’t know if they even have deals in Japan or Australia. Come on.

* They’re up year over year. Cool. This is true sometimes. December has seen lower viewership in 2021 than 2020 so far. This might not matter to TNT, but NXT was obviously a factor that AEW doesn’t have to deal with directly anymore. The number of people watching wrestling on a Wednesday has decreased. There hasn’t actually been any growth in popularity of AEW or wrestling overall. They’ve also had some MAJOR signings which helps them every now and then — CM Punk, Bryan Danielson — and that helps boost the data. But there hasn’t been an instance where AEW has been able to sustain those spikes for an extended period of time. Full Gear 2021 got a boost over Full Gear 2020. Cool.

I’m beyond the point of caring about whether or not AEW succeeds. I’ve been that way for a long time, because I’m not sympathetic to bad entries in a genre because I think they can hurt that genre. Some people are. That’s their prerogative. But I don’t think it is more “right” than my philosophy that the last thing wrestling fans is more bad wrestling. The best outcome I can see is a forest fire scenario, where the land is scorched and from it new life can grow. Short-term, I’m worried that anyone trying to sell wrestling to a network is going to be hit with the reality that it is not effective enough.

Battle of the Belts is going to be awesome. Here are my predictions for the show:

* The show opens with Jurassic Express defeating The Lucha Bros for the Tag Titles. Christian celebrates with JE backstage and Kyle O’Reilly debuts with Adam Cole and Bobby Fish and takes the faces out and they all spit on a picture of Luke Perry to get heat.

* Britt Baker defeats Riho to keep the Women’s Title. Rebel is in really skimpy gear to show off her ass. The heels attack Riho after the match and Hikaru Shida and Thunder Rosa make the save. Long-term storytelling.

* Sammy Guevara defends the TNT in a Ladder Match against Cody Rhodes, PAC, Malakai Black, Andrade El Idolo, Miro, Scorpio Sky and Darby Allin. Come on, that would be hectic! Spots galore. Doesn’t matter who wins the match, because the fans win!

* Main event is Adam Page vs. MJF for the World Title. CM Punk is doing commentary for the match. Punk promises not to interfere. He keeps to his word, but Danielson does and helps Page win because he wants to beat him. This also sets up tension between Danielson, MJF and CM Punk!

Really hard to fit that in on one card, but I’ve got some more ideas:

* The Ladder Match gets jump-started, so not everybody gets their intro. Cody still makes his though.

* Britt Baker and Riho is kept really short, because the heels really do hijack her out of her shot.

* NO TALKING! Except for maybe a short MJF promo prior to his title match. And the Elite Dragons taking out Jurassic Express.
