MJF has the potential to be a "real heel" like we haven't seen in a very VERY long time. Not sure how that will work in terms of today's TV with sponsors, etc. being wary of anything "mildly offensive" but I would love to see him get some nuclear heat.

Malakai Black is also featured regularly either via vignette, in ring segment or match. And it’s been consistent. I don’t want to accuse you of exaggerating for comedic effect, but the guy could be used in a way more meaningful way than he is, regardless of whether he has all the world records and infinity stones or not.

False advertising I can get behind, because you don’t do that shit. It disappoints someone. There are obviously times when you either have to change or can change and it be a benefit to you. But the old bait-and-switch can prove detrimental. AEW’s hands are not exactly clean of this though. PAC vs. Hangman Page being falsely advertised for Double or Nothing was my first clue that this company may not 100% know what they are doing.

There’s plenty of reasons for people to have a series of matches, and I don’t know why commentators on the outside feel the constant need to harp on about this like it’s inherently a bad thing. Having two different entities interact each week is not inherently good either. Especially when everyone works the same, so it feels like you’ve seen every match anyway.

Like MJF/Darby will have a big PPV match where Darby is "screwed".... but then there is no rematch and they both move on.

On the other hand you can get something like Orange Cassidy/Matt Hardy feud that goes on endlessly. I guess they only actually fought directly against each other a handful of times, but still...

Bragging about the "no rematches" thing is like saying "we don't drag out feuds unnecessarily", but then they do exactly that sometimes.... while others they just cut short because "no rematches".

Gives The Elite a bit of "legitimacy" from a "serious veteran" and would otherwise "do them good" to get someone into that dynamic who is not one of their goofy friends IRL, to settle them down a bit and focus them.

It may not be a strain on their finances, since they’re virtually unlimited, but it makes it impossible to properly place emphasis on things that matter. It just becomes mathematically impossible. I saw something that pointed out that the AEW roster is actually more bloated than WCW’s was at its worst.

If Tony Khan had another promotion, or a series of little developmental things? Sure. But this is also factoring in to how people perceive them — both fans and talent.

Take Kevin Owens. He has friends there. A lot of people thought it was a given he was going. But that isn’t to say that he doesn’t appreciate his role in WWE, his connection to fans, his working relationship with Vince (and the other McMahons — he’s worked closely with almost all of them), sees an advantage in showing loyalty, or even just wants to make his family happy (for all we know, they could be massive WWE marks and not like AEW). But if he’s looking at what his ceiling is in AEW — is he going to get more spotlight than Danielson or Punk? Or even Malakai Black? And these are the worthy talents. He’s going to have to bust ass harder than ever to stand out there, and even then it’s just so crowded.

There needs to be some attention paid to streamlining this and booking a show that top names can slip into and really fit. Instead it’s just a hodgepodge of everything and everyone. And for all the Jake Atlases and Tone Neseseses (Nesi) you sign, and you need some guys like that, you eventually create a bloat that is going to block some artery that limits you.

I used to reason that this would at least be good for the video game. But when that game comes out, how is its story mode going to make any sense with the glut of people that are and aren’t getting focused on in seemingly alternating months? Is half the roster even going to be recognisable, let alone contemporarily relevant to players?

Guys Swole is TERRIBLE. And for those who want to complain about the lack of diversity in AEW I think they are absolutely trying their best with what they have. It's not like they opened the promotion with Keith Lee and Jon Gresham. There aren't as many top level black wrestlers as there are white, Latino and Asian. But Tony has clearly done his part in being inclusive from the beginning.

It has always been troubling to me that AEW didn't have a black star that actually mattered. But Scorpio failed, Swole failed, Private Party flopped, and Lee Johnson is totally forgettable.

The diversity comment is horse shit. They’re likely about to crown a black female wrestler the first tbs champion after a year of her going undefeated and being booked like a monster. She made it to the end of that tourney by beating an extremely popular and protected Mexican wrestler. A Brazilian women who’s also ridiculously popular is protected. Their first 3 women’s champions were Japanese foreigners and a Native American trans women. The previously mentioned Mexican women is the favorite to be the next women’s world champion.

A foreigner win the TNT title, is featured prominently and booked like a monster. The current tag champs are Mexican. Dante Martin is featured regularly in an in going storyline and Lio Rush has been presented as nothing less than a big deal.

To say there’s no diversity is a bad faith argument. Swole just wasn’t good. She had that one awesome match on dark with diamante. And that’s about it. Everything else she did was ok at best and she’s not better nor does she have a higher ceiling than the women mentioned above except maybe Nyla, but Nyla fills a role Swole can’t.

Tony should go about it a better way. That comment was clearly made to put his foot down on Swole. I don’t think it’s wrong of him to defend his company, especially when such a dumb comment is made. But he shouldn’t be so sensitive. He should stick to hyping the shoes and thanking the fans and letting his PR team handle this kinda stuff.

Henry and Wight were big signings at the time, both of them obviously way past any type of prime but come with good name value.

They were brought in without very much planning or attention and have absolutely BOMBED everything they have attempted. Sure the fans have started to get into Henry's "it's time for the main event" line, but that could easily be any of the veterans that AEW already works with.


To me guys like that are just forcing you to spend money you don't have to be spending. Maybe the finances are balancing but it's hard to imagine with such a big roster and all that it entails to run a show like AEW does.

Basically my whole opinion on AEW is this...

It's really the only modern wrestling I enjoy.

They have too many undercard talents that I will never be interested in that should be released in favor for the looser contracts they have with indie talents, the tier that doesn't offer insurance.

They've started to accumulate too many older talents that are of no real use. I don't see a point in rolling over the contracts for Paul Wight, Tully Blanchard and Mark Henry.

Please just get rid of a lot of the first round signings like Janela, Sonny Kiss, and Kip Sabian.

I too regret that angle. Didn’t anything for anyone. And it was the last of the original Cody who turned face after his match with Dustin. I’ll give it this, though. The reactions after that strap match with QT have made him infinitely more interesting. The most interesting since his dashing days.

The rumor is that Cody tested positive but it's not confirmed yet. Would jive with him putting out a pro-vaccination message yesterday, though.

Battle of the Belts is a pretty big misstep all told. Only an hour but at the time people purchased tickets it wasn't made clear. I think a ton of us assumed Page-Danielson would be on that card.

Pretty obvious that the TV network dictated their desire for the show and AEW went ahead and obliged. But the fans are paying for 2 hours of Dark matches and then 2 title matches which might now only be 1.

If the Cody rumor is true, then maybe they have Page come in as the babyface he is and defend against Sammy, with the story being he's so beat up from Wednesday that Sammy has really good odds of winning?

Unless they have a really good make-up plan for the live audience, I'd be pretty bothered if I bought tickets for this show.

Yeah Battle of the Belts has been a pretty big misstep I would say. I think that they have promoted it very poorly with matches that are not really going to draw anybody just see it on a Saturday night that wouldn't watch it regardless.

The show being an hour long is completely ludicrous in my opinion. They should have just done a 2-hour rampage special and that's what this quarterly event should be just a 2-hour rampage. But a 1-hour show I can't even comprehend really what the people in attendance are going to experience beyond Dark tapings which are brutal.
