Michael Benoit Opposes Linda McMahon’s Political Dreams

Michael Benoit, the father of Chris Benoit, sent the following letter to the Hartford Courant, basically denouncing WWE and Linda McMahon’s political campaign…

Watching from afar, I’ve observed with interest the U.S. Senate campaign in Connecticut because of my experiences with Linda McMahon and her business, World Wrestling Entertainment. While she spends millions of dollars earned through her professional wrestling empire to flood Connecticut’s airwaves and mailboxes promoting her Republican candidacy, state voters should know there is another side to McMahon and the WWE.

My son, Chris Benoit, 40, was one of WWE’s top superstars. In June 2007, our lives changed dramatically, when he tragically killed his wife, son and himself. The press jumped on steroids as the cause of his actions. But tests showed that brain damage in the form of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, or CTE, not steroids, was responsible for our loss. CTE, caused by repetitive trauma to the brain, can bring on serious disorders such as a loss of emotional control, addictions to drugs and alcohol, depression, aggressive and violent behavior.

Most people view wrestling as fake and the McMahon family pushed that theory to avoid regulation. But in its lust for higher ratings and dollars, WWE began demanding that performers use more weapons and dangerous stunts in wrestling matches. Although matches are rigged and scripted, the harsh physical abuse in the form of blunt force steel chair shots to the head and power bombs through tables onto cement floors are real. I believe that this change in the industry is responsible for the majority of deaths it experienced in the last 20 years.

Another WWE wrestler, Andrew Martin, was 33 when he died. What did Andrew Martin have in common with my son? He was one of many of McMahon’s former wrestlers who died prematurely, and he was the second wrestler to have his brain examined for signs of CTE after death. Martin had the same shocking brain damage as my son. The human skull is not designed to withstand and protect the brain from the abuse the McMahon’s insisted their wrestlers endure. Yet, since the late ’80s, these are the matches into which the McMahon’s have pushed their talent.

USA Today in 2004 published research stating that wrestlers are 20 times more likely to die before the age of 45 than are pro football players. What has the McMahon family done to make pro wrestling safer? They will spend up to $50 million to get Linda elected to a position where she could head off any effort to regulate their business.

The WWE and Linda McMahon evade any responsibility for the early deaths that their industry suffers at an astronomical rate. After the Martin tests were completed, I sought to educate the McMahons about the scientific findings on brain trauma and how their wrestling stunts could cause this serious and fatal health issue. They were having none of it. It was clear, the McMahons were more interested in making hundreds of millions of dollars at the expense of these wrestlers, whom they regard as little more than circus animals to be ridden until their value expires.

On CNN in 2007, Vince McMahon, Linda’s husband, said they had stopped wrestlers from smashing each other’s heads with chairs. That practice, however, was not ended until January of this year — scores of “head shots” later. There are still all sorts of weapons and stunts that the McMahons use to equally dangerous effect. For a sport that is “fake,” there is an all too disturbing reality.

You might say that these young wrestlers make their own choices, and that is true. And the McMahons entice them with prospects for fame, wealth and glory that few achieve. If this were any other business or sport, there would be congressional hearings and laws passed to reform this dirty and dangerous enterprise. The McMahons have steadfastly held that wrestlers are just independent contractors and not entitled to health care benefits, pensions or unionization to represent their best interests.

This is how Linda McMahon made the money she uses for her Senate race. This is how she ran her business. This is the true character behind the fancy, Hollywood advertisements. I pray the people of Connecticut do not allow her to buy her way into the world’s most distinguished legislative body.

I had another dream.

This time I was a member of the Straight Edge Society, along with two other guys (who were not wrestlers, and were not anybody I know). So we did some stuff along with CM Punk.

I don't remember the details but...

I found myself waiting outside the building... and then someone delivered to me a baby sheep (that looked like a llama, but it was supposed to be a baby sheep). To explain, CM Punk had this whole thing going on where he was using a lot of sheep imagery as part of his whole "Go 2 Sleep" thing.

So, I was left there alone with the baby sheep... when I notice... it is actually somebody in a costume! So I pounce on the baby sheep and begin to beat him senseless. CM Punk reappears and tells me to get off, and starts yelling at me.

I get off and see that under the mask was one of my allies!

CM Punk was not impressed with me.

There was a lot more to this dream both before and after this event, but it is all a vague blur.

I think I would probably prefer them both as singles, however, with the current cluttered rosters due to the closing of ECW, a tag team is a good way to get both of them simultaneous television time on a consistent basis. I wish they would have held off a bit on the feud with the Hart Dynasty though, just to make an eventual match between the teams less predictable in the Harts favor.

I think they would do better as singles guys. They could team up occasionally, though. I really want to see John Morrison rock a feud with Chris Jericho. That could be a star-maker. The only thing is working out where The Miz then fits. A feud with Daniel Bryan could be quite cool. There is no need to rush The Miz to the top. He will naturally rise (as long as efforts aren't made to keep him down, which I don't think will be the case).

You could combine the feuds into a sweet Chris Jericho & Miz vs. John Morrison & Daniel Bryan match. Don't tell me that would not be awesome.

I did a poll earlier. Which organization was better. Although the WWF won, WCW had ALOT of votes.

WWF had the likes of The Rock, SCSA, and other great wrestlers.

Why was WCW so awesome?

World War 3 was an annual professional wrestling pay-per-view event produced by World Championship Wrestling. The pay-per-view's title also was the name of its signature match, a three-ring, sixty-man battle royal which was their answer to the World Wrestling Federation's Royal Rumble. The event took place every November. Like the Royal Rumble, the World War 3 match was held at the event that shared its name. All of the events took place at two venues, the Norfolk Scope and The Palace of Auburn Hills. In 1999, it was replaced by Mayhem.

The rules for a World War 3 match were similar to the rules for a Royal Rumble match. There were two major differences:

The WW3 match is played out in three rings, each holding twenty men.
All sixty men start the match at the same time (the same rules as a traditional battle royal).
The rules for the World War 3 match were:

All sixty men were randomly assigned a specific ring before the match began.
The match began with all sixty men, in three rings, when the bell rings.
A competitor must knock his opponent over the top rope of the ring, and both feet must touch the floor of the arena in order to eliminate said opponent from the match. This rule was amended in 1998 to allow for eliminations if a person leaves the ring in any way, in addition to counting pinfalls and submissions.
When thirty men remained, they moved to the central ring and the match continued. This rule was amended in 1998 so that the competitors had to move to the central ring once forty men had been eliminated.
The last man standing in the ring was declared the winner.

Was it because of World War 3?

The Triple Cage was used by the WCW only twice: first, at Slamboree 2000, Jeff Jarrett beat Diamond Dallas Page and David Arquette (defending the WCW World Heavyweight Championship) to win the title. In this match, Chris Kanyon was thrown from the roof of one of the cages, "paralyzing" him. The other, taking place on the September 4, 2000 episode of WCW Monday Nitro, was the 2000 edition of the WarGames match.

Ready To Rumble was inspired by this set up.

Was it because of The Triple Cage?

Or was it because of selected PPVs that were billed as NWO vs The WolfPac in it's titles.

It was a complete invasion of the factions.. Some might say that WCW went down due to too much stake and sight being put into the factions and not on the wrestling talent itself.

Why do you feel WCW was so successful and why hasn't WWE repeated any of their great successes while TNA continues on focusing on the same successes but not being as popular.

Put them both in the US Title scene. Yeah you can say Jericho is above the US title. But if he's not gonna be in the WWE Title scene then I say why not...Then again WWE is lacking Tag Team competition.

Both Characters have no real edge.

Big Show is a big bully who is out of shape.

So is Kane.

Any old timers know that when Kane had his mask on, and Show was The Giant, both were fit and on their game.

It's like Hogan & Flair. Old and out of shape, which no1 want's to see.. Keep your shirts on.

Big Show has been tossed around like a football since coming into the WWE. He has gained weight, lost hair, and been used face, heel, and made fun of repeatedly.

Stars like Kevin Nash, and The Undertaker can count their fame on changing of their gimmicks when needed.

Is it time for The Big Show and Kane to get new makeovers or new gimmicks completely?
