I'm about to watch this week's episode of SmackDown but judging by the thumbnails I'm seeing, it looks like it's just JBL and Cole talking about the WrestleMania matches and showing vignettes for them.

Is that all this weeks SmackDown is, or are there some matches happening on the episode?

Yokozuna competed in four WWF Title matches at WrestleMania in the span of one year.

That fact didn't really dawn on me until I was reading something about guys with the most main event/WWE/World title matches at WrestleMania. Pretty odd to think about.

My wrestlecon experience

- Got my stepped on by Rikishi waiting in line (my now 2nd mortal enemy in pro wrestling after Brian Kendrick bumped into me at the TNA show a couple years ago). I screamed like a little bitch and he never even turned around.

- Got to see Jushin Thunder Liger wrestle at Chikara. Show was actually pretty awesome. Biggest crowd ever for them (over 1000). Oh, and Marty Jannetty "wrestled" too, if by wrestle I were to mean hop around, get tagged in and dance around and then hang out in the corner on one knee for the last 7 or 8 minutes of the match. Wanted so badly to get a "Hairless Aggression" shirt but not in my size.

and now Im in my hotel room for the night..booyah

I still have hope that Antonio Cesaro might come out at WrestleMania and talk about how no American can beat him. Cue RVD's music who proceeds to hit a few of his signature moves on the surprised Cesaro, finishing him off with a Five Star Frog Splash to become the new United States Champion. That would be a pleasant surprise.

Of course, in a classic instance of “one step forward, two steps back,” the partnership would inevitably dissolve and end in something along the lines of Kane being set ablaze, Undertaker being buried alive, or some horrifying combination of the two. You know, typical brotherly tiffs.

Team Hell No-Dolph Ziggler & Big E Langston, Jericho-Fandango, and the 6 Man Tag have the potential to be great. Would be huge although it has to last and not be similar to HBK's heel turn against Hogan. HBK only acted heel for a few weeks and went right back to normal once Hogan was gone as if it never happened. Would be a big waste if he turns heel only to go right back to normal after Extreme Rules since the Rock is gone by then.

ESPN interview with Cena where he explains the reasons why he doesn't turn heel. Basically he doesn't want to stop all that extra stuff the WWE has him do and he doesn't want to go all out as a "bad guy."
ESPN: I know you said you’re not playing a character earlier, and how you’re playing yourself, but a lot of fans continue to clamor for a John Cena heel turn. I know in the past you’ve said you’re against it, but what if it was the best written script possible, something that would completely change the landscape of WWE? Would you go full-out heel and make the kids cry for maybe a year, or is that just not in the plans?

Cena: I just don’t see me getting there in order to please a very small group of 30-year-olds. To be very honest with you, every single week I meet kids with life-threatening illnesses and they’ll tell me how much I mean to them, and their parents will tell me how inspirational I’ve been to their kids. We raised a million dollars last year for breast cancer. I’m helping spearhead the Hurricane Sandy relief fund at this year’s WrestleMania. I’ve been able to give back to the military in Tribute to the Troops. And I’m currently working on a program to help America shave 5 million pounds. All of this stuff I would have to stop if I was a “bad guy.” To be a bad guy, you actually have to be a bad guy. I just don’t have it in me, personally. So although you might get a great story out of it for nine months, doing it would just take away so much, and I don’t have that club in the bag.

#1-norm-fan
04-07-2013, 04:59 PM
How is it at all mark-ish? He's just stating a fact. He wouldn't be able to do the make-a-wish stuff and all that jazz if he were a heel. Don't be blind just because your personal enjoyment hinges on whether he's a good guy or a bad guy.

James Steele
04-07-2013, 05:32 PM
CM Punk and others still do all that shit. The only difference is he wouldn't be the face of WWE's PR campaigns and get himself over as Mr. Wonderful. Cena is a mark for himself.

James Steele
04-07-2013, 05:33 PM
Bret Hart thought losing the belt in Canada would shatter a country, and John Cena thinks all of WWE's PR initiatives would fail without him.

Emperor Smeat
04-07-2013, 05:36 PM
According to Punk (and others), when he turned heel he was still doing those requests. Even Hogan and Austin have mentioned before in the past they were still doing requests even in their heel phases.

Either Cena really enjoys the spotlight for those events to the point he doesn't want to let someone else be seen as the main "good guy" or has the Bret Hart mentality of he's been a good guy for soo long, he can't envision himself being a bad guy for the kids. Bret basically had to be forced a bit to finally turn heel which lead to the great Canada/Hart vs USA/DX feud of the early Attitude Era.

Punk does not nor did he ever do what Cena did as far as the younger demo.

Mr. Nerfect

I still think you can have heels doing PR and that sort of stuff. Photos of fans posing with The Shield, for example. The Miz was on talk shows as a heel. I think Triple H used to do them as a heel, too. It would just be mad awks for the crippled kid to turn on WWE and see his hero being a total douche.

"fans posing with..." and "being on a talk show" do not = appealing to children and visiting dying kids as their last wish.

The fact that Cena is literally the top guy in the company simply because he appeals to kids should pretty much wrap any random argument one would try to start up about The Shield up. Unless dying makes kids say "fuck it, bring me a heel!"

In which case I'm sure WWE would send some. And Cena wouldn't set records for wishes granted and whatnot.

They don't. That's the point. Unless you think The Shield or Drew McIntyre or Camacho are granting wishes and whatnot left and right then what are you arguing? If you do think that, then we've got an issue of giving some evidence. I can show you the evidence for Cena. And on top of that, logically, I think we can say The Shield, D-Mac or Camacho don't spend much time visiting little kids and such. I mean... seriously.

It's not their appeal. Clearly. There's reasons Cena is so valuable in that spot and the main one is that he's been the top babyface for years and kids are marks. At no point was I speaking in absolutes as in "No dying kid would ever want to see The Shield". Obviously there are exceptions. The gap between them and Cena though is ridiculous. And to go back to the discussion before that, yes Cena turning heel would put a huge dent in that.

The flaw in your logic, though, is in your third sentence. Kids are marks. Cena is their #1 babyface. Hence, they want to see Cena. Some post-Mania dirstsheet news:

Triple H had x-rays performed on his arm last night but there were no signs of injury beyond some muscle bruising. His arm and hand were swollen after the Brock Lesnar match.

There were no fireworks to open the show last night due to the light skies and the feeling that the Hurricane Sandy video would be overpowered by pyro. They wanted the video to affect those watching and help quietly push their Sandy victim auctions.

There were several WWE midcard talents who were upset that they didn't get to go out in front of the crowd or even have backstage segments, especially considering in past years when the company tried to get everyone on the card. There was also a lot of talk about how wrong it was that Antonio Cesero didn't have a spot considering how hard he has worked.

The inter-gender tag match was cut before the PPV went on the air, as they decided to give the top three matches as much time as they wanted. Time was cut from the Jack Swagger vs Alberto Del Rio match and the company also cut Lilian Garcia singing "America the Beautiful".
This one surprised me the most when it happened. Didn't really feel like they were rushing for time until the Cena-Rock match started.

According to Wikipedia, there was only about 2 hours of actual wrestling last night and the big matches were only in the 20-25 minute range. The WWE managed to somehow mess up with an extra 2 hours of time even though there were no skits/promos and hype videos were mostly limited to Cena and Rock before the Taker-Punk match.

Dying kids don't want to see The Shield. That's the point...

A lot of dying kids don't want to see John Cena either. Some of them are Rock fans. Your point is essentially "because John Cena is the top face, he must stay the top face, because if he turned heel he wouldn't be the top face."

probably shouldn't be exclusively booking towards dying kids

not a real permanent market

This is how John Cena could be the most hated heel in WWE history. You bring in an Aaron Eckhart in "Thank You For Smoking" type heel who points out that John Cena wants little kids to die, because that means he'll always have charity work to do. It's in the interest of those who don't need PR appearances to want children to be happy and healthy all the time.

Fan you may be surprised what these kids like. My 7 year old Godson loves Dean Ambrose, no bullshit. Before Ambrose, he loved Cody and Matt Hardy and he's 7, so I know he doesn't remember those classic tag table matches.

Kids' taste may surprise you sometimes. I know it shocks the fuck outta me.

This. When my nephew used to watch he had a really obscure favourite. It surprised the fuck out of me and I was a mark for Val Venis and Doug Basham. The other one is currently a massive fan of Damien Sandow. He likes how he isn't afraid to use big words and that he feels sorry for him that no one likes him even though he's trying to help. Seriously. He didn't like Cody Rhodes, but he now kind of likes him because he's the only person who likes Sandow.

SOON TO BE THE "SETH ROLLINS CONFERENCE ROOM" ONCE THIS CONSPIRACY GETS BUSTED OPEN, AMIRITE!?

You know, you are starting to sound like a dick at this point. No one is saying that The Shield grant as many as John Cena. All I was referencing was the photos Rollins, Ambrose & Reigns took with some crippled kids at Fan Axxess over the weekend. It's the job of both faces and heels in this modern era to be ambassadors for the business. It's perfectly fine for Roman Reigns to flash his attractive smile in a photograph with some fans that have flown all around world to see their favourite Superstars -- heroes and villains -- at the biggest show of them. Of course John Cena grants more wishes than them. They've literally just shown up on the scene and are making their mark. Cena is the established top babyface. I'm not saying he's not a genuinely nice person, but that doesn't mean he can't be a genuinely nice person and be a heel. That happens these days.

This is what started everything. If dying kids wanted to see The Shield, they would. If dying kids wanted to see Drew McIntyre, they would. If dying kids wanted to see Camacho, they would. Insert any random name you want. If, if, if.

I mean... seriously.

Dying kids don't want to see The Shield yet. When it comes time for them to move further up the card, start putting on the smiles and being nice guys, we'll see how they go with the kiddies, yeah? Again, I'm not saying John Cena doesn't lead the way. No one is saying that. It's just this false logic that he is the only one who could ever do it and can only ever do it as a babyface because heels don't do PR stuff. You've had points raised against you using CM Punk, Mark Henry, The Shield, Hulk Hogan, David Otunga, The Miz and Triple H. I'm sure Sheamus was doing stuff when he was technically a heel, too. Everytime the WWE goes to Afghanistan you hear the heels talking about what a moving experience it was and how they support the troops. Being a heel =/= someone who can't be a nice guy to dying kids. That is the point. No one is arguing that the top face is not in the best position to do it. It's fair enough that Cena wants to give little kids a hero, but...

The flaw in your logic, though, is in your third sentence. Kids are marks. Cena is their #1 babyface. Hence, they want to see Cena. Turn Cena heel, someone else becomes #1 babyface, kids are still marks, they'll still want to see the #1 babyface. Only difference is, it will be someone else in the role.

This. Cena can selflessly do his dying kids stuff, but when he turns heel it will just be someone else. Granted, they might not put the exact same amount of time and energy in as Cena (who puts in more than anyone else in like any field). I think the original point was that John Cena sounds like a mark for himself when he says that, and while I never used those words, I can see that point. Cena doesn't want to turn heel because then it wouldn't be him being the top face. Either dying kids want to see John Cena because he's John Cena or they want to see John Cena because he's the top face. The kids that want to see John Cena because he's the top face will adapt to get new heroes; the ones that want to see John Cena can still see John Cena.

I'm not saying that Cena should even turn heel. He's great at what he does and it would suck to dampen his connection with the kiddies. That doesn't mean the whole "Who will be the face of the company?" arguement isn't stupid. The new face of the company will be the face of the company, stupid.

I'm calling you names affectionately, by the way. You're a good poster a lot of the time. We argue about stuff and you seem to take it really personally, though. Relax. We're just saying you're wrong.

Major Raw Crisis - The Rock Walks Out On WWE?
Posted by: Ben Kerin of WrestlingNewsSource.com on Apr 08 2013
Source: PWInsider.com Wrestling Observer

The Wrestling Observer is reporting there is panic backstage at tonight's Raw right now and a rewrite of the show is underway this afternoon.

The Rock had been originally scheduled to appear in an angle with Brock Lesnar which would set up the main event for WrestleMania 30 next year however, the word backstage is that he left for Los Angeles this morning.

WWE sources indicate this caught the company completely off guard.

UPDATE:

Apparently a meeting taking place at this moment regarding Rock
— Bryan Alvarez (@bryanalvarez) April 8, 2013

From the Observer;

"There is absolute panic at Raw at this moment. The show was scheduled to build to a segment where Brock Lesnar beat up Rock to set up next year's WrestleMania main event. Rock is not there. The word at the building is he went home. Vince McMahon, the writers and producers are in the process of redoing the show, evidently believing the angle has been nixed. Nobody knows any details as to what happened past that. The belief right now is Rock is not appearing and hopefully if that changes we'll get an update."

Mr. Nerfect
04-08-2013, 06:22 PM
It could conceivably make sense if The Rock was telling Vince "This won't work. People will hate it," and no one listened to him. The Rock's a pro and seemed willing to play ball though. I can imagine doing something inorganic and getting booed for it despite you knowing the best way to go is to end the show with a bang might make a performer a bit unhappy.

Not saying that is what happened, #1-wwf-fan. Just speculating as to a possibility.

A year ago I never would've thought I'd be a fan of Daniel Bryan. He was utterly dull. Teaming with Kane has done wonders for him and now he's one of the best comedy guys they have. Don't know how I'll feel about him when they inevitably split up, but if they keep him as a Kurt Angle-esque goofy comedy guy who can also go in the ring he could be fun.

I don't want to see him with one of the big belts again though. Keep him as an upper mid guy who can fill in at main event level from time to time, but no higher.

Never thought I'd see the Brothers of Destruction split in the middle by 5'10" Daniel Bryan. Cool visual, and I actually would love if UT decided to do a match against the Shield at Extreme Rules with Hell No. Of course one of the Tag Champs would take the fall and the Shield adds another notch in their belt. Kind of excited for that if its the direction they're going in.

She's also been a dream-signing of mine for the Divas Division. Now I can only hope they re-sign Kharma and Beth Phoenix while also bringing in Saraya Knight to feud with her daughter Paige (actually think that could be huge) and then train some of the younger girls. And sign Cheerleader Melissa to be an ass-kicking anti-Diva. And sign Hamada and Ayumi Kurihara (just going by "Ayumi" in WWE) as a heavy-hitting joshi and a plucky happy-go-lucky anime-style babyface. And a masked female to add some intrigue to the division as its "Lucha Libress."

Since I read that the Knockouts Division was the top-rated part of TNA's programming for ages and how effectively they put together a division back in the day, I've always wanted to see the WWE get their act together on the female front and put together a Divas Division that has interesting characters and talent littered throughout. Maybe the girls won't get to headline RAW like Lita/Trish ever did, but as buffers between main event feuds and as ways to pad out about 7 1/2 hours of programming each week, I think they could be used quite effectively.

I still think Kharma could be an actual draw for the WWE, given that there has been no one like her in the company's history.

Derrick Bateman's career is not done yet. All he needs is that reinvention like Johnny Curtis had. Curtis was always better than Bateman, though. Well, Curtis was more well-rounded. Bateman is really good at being a weird entertaining guy, but falls down when it comes to ring work.

The WWE could release a whole range of "Bear vs. Goat" products to sell for Daniel Bryan.
