That beat down Sandow gave Sheamus was pretty much a "we're going to make it look like you can kick ass" beat down. I was expecting Sheamus to get some hits in somewhere, but he just floored by a pissed off Sandow.
Sandow is a modern version of The Million Dollar Man. They tried getting Ted DiBiase, Jr. to do that, but it just didn't work. Sandow is knocking the ball out of a child's hands, taking it and running with it, though. I really wouldn't object if he won a Money in the Bank briefcase this year (although I've got the feeling there may only be one up for grabs). A "smart" cash-in would be right up his alley. Too many guys are winning World Championships though. I'm just enjoying Sandow to the point where, if he has a singles match against Sheamus, I'd rather him win because it would help him a lot more than it would Sheamus.

Am I the only one that thinks 3MB breaking up could actually be a pretty huge storyline. Not in the sense that I expect any of the three to revolutionize the industry after it happens, but it would just be fun to see the three beat the crap out of each other.
All three would be somewhat fresh in new roles too. Drew coming out to "Broken Dreams" might actually get a reaction from the right crowd. Jinder Mahal was stuck with an "I'm an Indian, boo me" gimmick that would have gone nowhere, but now might be able to keep the leather pants and develop a character that is something other than "angry foreigner." Slater, despite being so perfectly annoying, has quite the endearing quality about him. He and Justin Gabriel could actually make a pretty decent babyface tag team if neither is doing anything later in the year.

Heath Slater should be given a gimmick similar to the one Barry Horowitz had back in the day. They should have him go on a losing streak for like 6 or 7 months, nonstop losing every week, have him earn the fans' sympathy, and then have him get a big win over someone like Wade Barrett or something.

Expecting WWE to do something that is entertaining with the break up of 3MB is foolish. Though I would love for what you said to happen.

I found it really weird that the WWE brought up Heath Slater as a babyface rookie on NXT. He was pretty much meant to be an annoying heel. The endearing heart and soul of Heath Slater as he gets the shit kicked out of him by virtually everyone could translate over to babyface status, though.
I mean, Heath Slater walking to the ring with a big goofy grin on his face as Brock Lesnar stands in there waiting for him? How could you not love that guy?

Drew McIntyre is 28 years old and Jinder Mahal is only 26. These guys have plenty of time, which is why I think doing some time in something not so "serious" could be pretty beneficial for them. Slater's only 30 this year as well.

Does anyone else here hate Lumberjack Matches? I just find that it's always jobbers around the ring and there is no story to them being there. For example, 3MB are going to be around the ring at Payback, but what are they going to really achieve by being there? And then the fall happens and they go to the back, thanks for coming guys. I just think they're awkward and more Superstars should be using that moment to "steal the spotlight," but they can't because that would just be a mess.
I guess I could deal with a Lumberjack Match if there were a real story behind it, and the Superstars around the ring all had a purpose for being there and wanted to kick the crap out of both guys in the ring. It should be because they are feuding, though. For example, if there was a Money in the Bank Ladder Match coming up, two of those guys fighting with the rest of the competitors as lumberjacks would work. If you fall out of the ring you get kicked by your other opponents at the PPV, but there is no bias towards either guy.

With the Kaitlyn admirer angle, I like the idea I saw here that someone had (clearly) of it being a prank pulled by AJ Lee to mess with Kaitlyn. That would set up a Payback match pretty nicely between the two. Anyway, since Vince McMahon is probably going to be on RAW and there need to be some matches set for the show, I would have the card pretty much set up in a backstage segment with Vince, Vickie and Brad Maddox where Vince says that he's looking for a permanent General Manager of RAW and he wants to here some ideas from Maddox and Vickie. The two basically just rattle off some match ideas and one of them is Kaitlyn getting her hands on AJ Lee, but Brad throws on the added stipulation of it affecting the World Title match later in the show -- if AJ Lee wins, then Dolph Ziggler gets to choose the match stipulation between him and Del Rio; but if Kaitlyn wins, Del Rio gets to choose the match. Vince likes that idea.
At Payback, AJ Lee forces Kaitlyn to submit and becomes the new Divas Champion. It could be the opening match of the PPV, or it could even be on the pre-show if the rest of the card is stacked. Dolph Ziggler then gets to choose how he faces Del Rio later in the show. Being a slimy heel, Dolph chooses Handicap Match -- he and Big E. Langston will both face Del Rio.
This does a few things:
* It keeps Ziggler vs. Del Rio as a one-on-one match fresh. Since Ziggler has been out there hasn't really been much interaction between the two, so the PPV is hardly being sold on their account. Zigs vs. Del Rio could happen again at a later date.
* Del Rio is now unfairly positioned which will hopefully get the fans behind him. It also gives him a credible way to lose and keep face.
* Let's say Big E. Langston gets the pinfall. Or let's say he finishes off Del Rio and then Ziggler tags himself in and takes the pin for himself. That furthers the developing tensions between Camp Ziggler.
* Or, and I know people will hate this suggestion, let's say Del Rio uses his cunning and experience to defeat Langston in the match. Ziggler wasn't in the fall that lost the title, so he's got a legit reason to be pissed at Langston. It also puts the World Title back on Del Rio, and as a babyface one of Del Rio's greatest attributes is his credibility and that depends on him actually winning matches.
Let's go with Del Rio managing to pin Langston. Ziggler slaps Langston in the face and Langston shoves Ziggler down after the match, but AJ Lee stands between Langston and Ziggler and saves Dolph from a further beat-down. On RAW, Dolph calls out Langston and wants to know what happened. Dolph tries to guilt Langston into feeling bad -- after all, Dolph's the reason he has a job here and the reason he got the opportunity to debut at WrestleMania. AJ's a champion, Dolph was a champion until Langston screwed it up and he wants an apology. Del Rio crashes the party and he sort of comes to Langston's defense. He says he respects Langston as a performer and there's absolutely no shame in losing to the best in the world. Wink. Del Rio says that he's been WWE Champion before, but his dream was always to be the World Heavyweight Champion, because he's competed all over the world and not just in WWE, so he fights harder for this title than anyone. He reminds Langston that he has a lot of money, and he'd spend a lot of money to see Langston kick Dolph's ass. You can do the face turn for Langston right there and then, or you can have Langston continue to play confused. Whatever. But basically CM Punk takes offense to hearing Del Rio refer to himself as "The Best in the World."
Punk challenges Del Rio to a match that night, but the World Title isn't on the line since Ziggler hasn't gotten his rematch and Maddox/Vickie don't have authority over the title. Del Rio and Punk do their fine work, but then Dolph comes out and costs Del Rio the match. Punk gets a big win over the World Champion, but he doesn't like that Ziggler helped him. He and Dolph start brawling, because Punk feels that Ziggler hurt his point, and Punk nails the GTS on Dolph, but then Del Rio takes out Punk with a roundhouse kick and gets to stand tall as World Heavyweight Champion.
This leads to a Triple Threat World Heavyweight Championship match at Money in the Bank in Philadelphia, where Punk will be super-over, Ziggler will probably be super-over and Del Rio might even be super-over. They'll tear the house down and there can be the question of what role, if any, Big E. Langston will play in the match. Put that with John Cena vs. Daniel Bryan for the WWE Title, one or two Money in the Bank Ladder Matches, Curtis Axel vs. Triple H in a No Holds Barred Match, Seth Rollins & Roman Reigns defending the WWE Tag Team Championship against my dream team of Sheamus & Antonio Cesaro and you've got yourself a pretty memorable card popping up.

I say one or two Money in the Bank Ladder Matches, because I wonder if two might be killing the gimmick a little bit? It's worked for the past couple of years, but it's really only one briefcase winner who stands out. It also adds intrigue as to which title they will go for, and not just when. Plus, the difference between the WWE Title and World Heavyweight Title is no longer associated by brand. You could have former champions in one like last year, but then you're not really "making a star" with it.
How about an eight man Ladder Match featuring the likes of Chris Jericho, Christian, Cody Rhodes, Damien Sandow, Dean Ambrose, Kane, The Miz and Randy Orton. You've got a mix of established veterans and former World Champions, former winners of MITB itself, the guy who invented the concept and some rising stars. Where's Ryback? You have his spot cost to him when he loses to Randy Orton after Kofi Kingston returns and costs Ryback the match.
I mean, look at this potential Money in the Bank card:
WWE Championship
John Cena (c) vs. Daniel Bryan
* Daniel Bryan forces John Cena to submit to The "YES!" Lock and captures his first WWE Championship in a moment that people will remember for a long time.
Triple Threat Match for the World Heavyweight Championship
Alberto Del Rio (c) vs. Dolph Ziggler vs. CM Punk
* Big E. Langston turns on Dolph Ziggler, setting up Ziggler vs. Langston at SummerSlam. Punk is the one who capitalises on this and becomes a four-time World Heavyweight Champion in Philly.
No Holds Barred Match
Curtis Axel vs. Triple H
* It looks like Triple H is about to win the match, but Paul Heyman gets into the ring and subjects himself to a Pedigree, allowing a recovering Axel to grab a sledgehammer Triple H introduced and nail him across the jaw with it and get the pin.
Money in the Bank Ladder Match
Chris Jericho vs. Christian vs. Cody Rhodes vs. Damien Sandow vs. Dean Ambrose vs. Kane vs. The Miz vs. Randy Orton
* Dean Ambrose wins the match because he is a rising star that the WWE can probably get behind. Jericho is the second-to-last man on the ladder and this sets up Ambrose vs. Jericho at SummerSlam for the US Title -- the only championship Jericho hasn't won in the WWE.
Tables Match
Ryback vs. Kofi Kingston
* Kofi Kingston puts Ryback on a table and goes for a Boom Drop off a ladder onto Ryback, but Ryback moves and Kofi goes through. Ryback then gets another table and powerbombs Kofi right through it to officially win the match and get his first PPV win in like a year.
WWE Tag Team Championship
Seth Rollins & Roman Reigns (c) vs. Sheamus & Antonio Cesaro
* I'd actually move the titles on Sheamus & Antonio Cesaro here, just because there aren't too many face teams that can take on The Shield, and them losing would be a big deal. This would allow a rematch at SummerSlam between the two teams.
Intercontinental Championship
Fandango (c) vs. Wade Barrett
* Barrett gets his rematch against Fandango from Payback, where Fandango manages to steal the championship by pinning The Miz with a Flying Leg Drop. An overzealous Barrett doesn't only want to beat Fandango, but hurt him as well. He goes for the Bullhammer on Fandango after a pretty one-sided affair in Barrett's favour, and has Fandango's head lined up against the ring post. Fandango is pulled out of the way by Summer Rae and Barrett's arm is then injured. Fandango manages to bust out a new arm-based submission move and Barrett is forced to tap.
Divas Championship
AJ Lee (c) vs. Kaitlyn
* AJ Lee forces Kaitlyn to submit to the Black Widow. Then I would hopefully hear cackling over the PA as Kharma made her return, but I always say that.
Six-Man Tag Team Match
The Wyatt Family vs. R-Truth & The Usos
* R-Truth, simply because he's over and doesn't always job, seems like he'd be a good first target for The Wyatt Family. It's also good to get a veteran on PPV. Bray scores the pin despite shenanigans, perhaps from Bayley at ringside.
Pre-Show Match
Zack Ryder & Curt Hawkins vs. Epico & Primo
* A simple battle between two former Tag Team Champions who are looking to get back into contention. This would be a great way to warm the crowd up. Ryder & Hawkins, the face team, pick up the win and move forward, but are attacked by The Prime Time Players after the match.

Oh, and maybe they can bring Rob Van Dam back for Money in the Bank this year. I'm not sure what his plans are, but prior to signing with TNA, he was open to one-night deals with the WWE. You can do a thing where all former Money in the Bank Winners are given priority entry into the match, and RVD comes back as a former winner of the match to see if he can still be "The Whole Damn Show." That'd move the match up to nine people, which still wouldn't be the most crowded one ever. But RVD? In a Ladder Match? In Philly? Come on.

I had a weird idea for Christian yesterday, since there isn't too much for him creatively. This might be the worst thing ever, but bear with me:
Christian returns and talks about how he is one of the greatest Tag Team Champions of all-time, and he's actually getting of his most successful teams back together. He introduces us to his partner...Edge! Out steps someone who is clearly not Edge. In my fantasy, it was Kassius Ohno, but I have another crazier idea for him. Anyway, this wrestler claims to be Edge. Michael Cole can inform us of who the wrestler really is, but they constantly scream at the announce table "I am Edge!" and even brings up his history of having held eleven World Titles. The actual Edge then returns and asks Christian what the hell is going on. Edge II gets in the face of Edge I and tells him that a slight breeze can break his neck, so he better get out of the way of the seven-time Tag Team Champions. Edge can then re-endorse Zack Ryder & Curt Hawkins, his old Edge Heads, and send them against "Edge & Christian."
On the NXT roster page, there is a guy named Judas Devlin, who seems to play some sort of philosophical "get in your head" type intellectual with tattoos and piercings. Kind of like an anti-Damien Sandow. On the NXT roster page, besides Kassius Ohno, he seems like the best choice. He looks to have a similar build to Edge, too -- standing 6'5 and weighing in at 235lbs.

Emma should be called up as Brad Maddox's assistant. Then she'd be the assistant to the assistant to the managing supervisor of Monday Night RAW, which is only a small chuckle, but is a bit of a joke about how many authority positions are in the WWE these days. Vickie Guerrero can take issue with her and put her into a few matches against Tamina Snuka after a few weeks.

You know no one's gonna blow someone out. It's gonna end either tied or with a 1 point win. Which makes the first 58 minutes of the match basically meaningless.
Not to mention the fact that I hate the idea of 6-5 iron man matches where two guys are getting pinned a shitload of times in one night. I think major stars getting pinned should be a huge deal. I fucking hate how normal it is nowadays. 11 times in one night is a quick way to just make it more nauseating.

I don't know where that comes into play. I'm not saying I don't like it because it's unrealistic. I'm saying I don't like it because the booking possibilities are pretty thin. The journey can be awesome. But in that case, like Lock Jaw said, it's better to just have a basic match that could end at any moment.
Mr. Nerfect
06-11-2013, 07:02 PM
I don't know, I think there are many different stories to tell in an Iron Man Match. The heel can get himself disqualified on purpose injuring his opponent and then putting him in excruciating submission holds. The babyface can refuse to tap, putting pressure on the heel who sees the clock ticking down. The face can then make a huge comeback and perhaps even roll up the heel to go 2-0 just after half-way through the match. The heel then gets super-vicious and applies a malicious hold on and the babyface has to tap. The drama is coming from the safety of the face, and whether or not they can protect their lead.
There can be stories where the heel cheats their way up front early and then the face has to make a heroic comeback. There could be the story you mentioned of neither guy going down. Maybe they even battle too long outside and a countout is issue against both men. They go up 1-1, but are still neck and neck. Another can roll-up another and that's 2-1. Then they can both pin each other of a superplex 3-2. They look evenly matched, but one star has got the advantage over the other. At the end, the second guy manages to make a comeback and score a pinfall of his own with maybe ten minutes remaining. There's that last window for them to get one more fall and win the match.
You don't need to have either extreme of lots of falls or no falls. The falls just need to make sense and tell a story.
I don't know where that comes into play. I'm not saying I don't like it because it's unrealistic. I'm saying I don't like it because the booking possibilities are pretty thin. it comes into play when you say "we know exactly where things are gonna stand in 58 minutes". The booking possibilities aren't really thin. If that's the case then that pretty much applies for all matches (they certainly can't "end at any moment") you know for the most part when the finish in most matches is coming, only difference with iron man matches is that there's a countdown to the end of the time limit, the finish still usually takes place at some point during the final minute (aka the equivalent of going home in a normal match) as opposed to bang on the limit
Mr. Nerfect
06-11-2013, 07:05 PM
What CSL said. You always know a tag match is going to feature a babyface getting beaten down by the bad guys before he gets an opportunity to tag in his partner who beats up both the bad guys for a couple of minutes before things move towards a finish.
Mr. Nerfect
06-11-2013, 07:14 PM
How about an Iron Man Match where the heel has dominated the feud, remained champion and been such a vicious and arrogant tormentor to the babyface, who no one really gives a chance to win. The heel starts the match off strong and vicious. They almost seem to toy with the babyface -- "pacing himself," as the commentators would point out. The babyface, about twenty minutes in, manages to score a fluke roll-up and the announcers shit themselves. This heel has been such a dominant champion and he just got pinned! If this were any other match, the babyface would be champion. "It's not, though, it's an Iron Man Match. Bad guy is going to get back in control, you see" -- heel commentator.
The heel dominates some more and looks for a big move off the top to put babyface down. The babyface manages to knock them off the top rope, however. A missile dropkick is hit by babyface, knocking heel down. They get off their back onto their hands and knees, but an Oklahoma roll later and the babyface is up 2-0. Keep in mind, this heel has never even come close to losing his title like this. He applies a signature submission hold, but the babyface gets to the ropes. The heel celebrates because the face must have submitted, but the referee informs him that no such thing happened. The heel is frustrated and pushes the referee. "That was a submission!" "Don't you push me, I'm the ref!" The ref then says something to the ring announcer and timekeeper. The heel has been disqualified, the score now stands at 3-0. The heel is amazingly frustrated at this point, and knocks the referee out with a hard right. The heel seizes this moment and grabs the ring bell and clocks babyface in the face with it. Another referee runs down to the ring, but the babyface kicks out at two!
You see where this is going -- a dominant heel champion thinks an Iron Man Match is going to allow him to beat and humiliate his opponent, but the opposite actually happens. The babyface's skill, resilience, heart, and the heel's own fiendish nature all play in favor of justice that night, and the babyface takes an amazing clean-sweeping victory over a heel that has been nothing but dominant. It'd be a shocking upset for the ages, and wouldn't just be a heel putting a babyface over in a shocking way, but in a shocking way that makes the face look legendary.

The story during the match can go a few places but it's a story we know is leading to the final minute or so of the 60 minutes being the deciding fall. Kinda makes you think "Who gives a shit?" when it comes to the rest of it.
And obviously I wasn't being literal when I said it "can end at any moment". Obviously Steamboat-Flair or HBK-Taker or Punk-Cena isn't gonna end 3 minutes in. There's still some build. But it's building toward a climax that, once it hits that peak, could end out of the blue.
Say you've got a CM Punk vs John Cena iron man match. It's 20 minutes in and the pace is picking up. Who cares? You can turn away for 35 minutes and you know when you turn back, you'll be seeing them going at it for 5 more minutes with someone trying to get the deciding fall.
Now say it's a regular match. There's no way you're gonna turn away at that 20 minute mark. The finish could come at any point. It could even still come 40 minutes from now. But you'll keep watching. And they'll keep you on the edge of your seat with a ton of false finishes which just aren't really possible in an iron man match until the end.

Like I said, there are stories you can tell in an iron man match. They can be fine. Hell, the WrestleMania XII iron man match is one of my favorites ever. But the drama is limited and especially it today's wrestling I'd prefer they just lay off the gimmick.
Mr. Nerfect
06-11-2013, 07:22 PM
How about a babyface that has chased the title for so long, but in the middle of the match suffers an injury. The referee stops the clock and even Vince McMahon comes out to check on the face. "There's still twenty minutes left, it's too risky." The babyface knows that this is their only chance at the title, they've got an advantage (or they are at least tied), but if the match ends now they won't be champion. Imagine if a heel got disqualified and caused that injury on purpose, because they know if the face forfeits, their advantage means shit.
You can walk away from that, but if you miss that little detail, you've missed a great dramatic event and a future champion's choice to press on and fight for their dream. You've missed a villain being so manipulative and heinous to try and keep their title. They will show replays and such, but it's not the same as seeing it unfold.
I'm not saying there should be Iron Man Matches all the time -- but two wrestlers could definitely tell an absolutely amazing story with the match format.

Oh, they shouldn't happen all the time. You need two very special performers to make them work. But when was the last time we saw a proper one?
The story during the match can go a few places but it's a story we know is leading to the final minute or so of the 60 minutes being the deciding fall. Kinda makes you think "Who gives a shit?" when it comes to the rest of it.

but if you turn away, you're going to miss most of the story and naturally it's going to feel a bit shit. You know how long a film is going to be before you see it and 95% of the time, if you've watched a lot of film before, you can work out it's going to end only one of a few ways. It's the story they tell in between that decides whether it's any good or not. It's the same with pro wrestling. Don't really see how an iron man match stipulation changes that fact, especially if the two guys are tied going into the last few minutes. I understand your point of view but all an iron man match really is at it's "core" is a glorified time limit that you know is going to be reached.

I don't see pro wrestling as analogous to a movie as much as to a real sport. You've got two people or teams. One wins, one loses. I don't like the idea of a scripted sport having a point system. Just like if football games were scripted, there would really be little to no drama for the first 58 minutes because people would tune out if it was gonna be a blowout.
Like I said earlier, you can have drama. But the drama you can have can be accomplished in a normal match. The points really don't matter. The real end of the match is gonna come in the final minute or so. The "score" throughout the match is irrelevant. So why not add the drama of one fall possibly coming out of nowhere and all that comes along with it and just have a long match?

A blowout during an Iron Man match could work in theory as long as its not the face doing it and plays into the crowd fully behind hating the heel.
Need to have a regular match then transition into a beating/venting phase by the heel that leads to a lot of DQ points for the face. Then just have the heel casually and slowly get those points back while constantly taunting and toying with the crowd to build up their hate for him.
Would have two good options to end it with the heel being soo smug with arrogance, he gets the final point with a crowd truly hating him (and maybe create a new top heel star). The other is for a gradual "last stand" by the face occurs and he gets the final point with the crowd erupting in joy.
The face can't be too helpless or else the match would just drag on but can't have sudden "Super Cena" moments or else the buildup/flow gets ruined.

A few things from the dirtsheets/WWE:
At last word, Bryan is still scheduled to be part of the WWE Title picture in July and August of this year.
- On a related note, it's possible we see two heels turns at Payback, one with Bryan and the other with Chris Jericho.
Kind of hoping Bryan doesn't turn or else it will just feel as another case where someone only turned or got pushed because they need a new heel for Cena to go against.
This past weekend, WWE officials discussed doing Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns vs. Kane and The Undertaker at August's SummerSlam pay-per-view. If Taker doesn't want to do the match, then it will likely be The Shield vs. Randy Orton and Sheamus.
Other matches being discussed for SummerSlam include John Cena vs. Daniel Bryan for the WWE Title, Big E Langston vs. either Big Show or Mark Henry and Rey Mysterio vs. Dean Ambrose, if Rey is able to perform then.
Orton vs. Ryback and Mysterio vs. Jack Swagger also have been discussed for this summer.

lol catching up on the Austin podcasts, not quite sure what's going on in the one about the fly but it's quite entertaining. An anatomical lesson on flies, a verbal exchange with a fly in which he also plays the role of said fly, promos from the fly and then Austin and now he's commentating on a match between himself and the fly. You don't get this with Cabana.

Clarification: It appears C.M. Punk will not be debuting new theme music at Payback on Sunday. PWTorch has received new information that Rancid lead singer Lars Frederiksen's comment Tuesday in Detroit about recording a new theme for Punk was made in jest.
Punk will be returning to WWE in his hometown of Chicago and has not appeared on TV since the middle of April following WrestleMania.
According to a report by FTWPodcast.com, Punk attended Tuesday's concert and was brought on-stage by Lars.
