was it for survivor series? I completely forget. Don't really remember televised singles matches bw the 2, tho it's a taylor-made feud of the times.

They had a confrontation at Wrestlemania fought each other in a 6 man at Summerslam, fought at Survivor Series and headlined a MSG show

Most WWF matches at that time were non-finishes. Whenever I go back and watch a match between two mid to upper card guys that I don't remember, I have no question it's gonna end with a countout or DQ. There were major feuds that would just end without a finish in the ring. lol

Roddy Piper, Duggan, and Bad News in particular.

Since 2001, WWE has used eight titles as a "world title". One company. Using eight different "world titles" over a 16 year span. That's one way to shit on the prestige of being world champion.

Lana denied the rumor on Twitter.

I know that I'm days late for the topic, but this seems like an evergreen statement, because how much stock can you really put on that? Not calling Lana a liar or anything so harsh, but people deny shit all the time, especially on Twitter, then a week later, a day later, sometimes a few HOURS later, the original thing is revealed to be true, and they just wanted to be the one to break the news on their own terms.

Let me try to write them down

1. WWE Championship
2. WCW Championship (World Championship)
3. World Heavyweight Championship
4. ECW Championship (not sure if this counts)
5. Universal Championship

Are you considering the Undisputed Championship, and the WWE World Heavyweight Championship as separate entities? Or are you referring to the physical title that represents the world championship?

WWE Championship (since 2001)

1. Winged Eagle title.
2. Winged Eagle title and the "Big Gold" title.
3. Undisputed title.
4. Spinner title.
5. Non Spinner Spinner title.
6. Last title design with the old scratched logo.
7. Last title design with the old scratched logo and the "Big Gold" title.
8. WWE World Heavyweight title design with the modern logo.

World (WCW) Championship

1. "Big Gold" title

World Heavyweight Championship

1. "Big Gold" title.
2. Updated "Big Gold" title with WWE branding. (not going to include the leather updates)

ECW Championship

1. ECW World Heavyweight Wrestling title.
2. Phoenix title.

Universal Championship

1. Red strap and modern logo. (similar to the current WWE Championship design)

That doesn't make things any less convoluted.

3 is a combination of two titles. 6 was a completely different title that existed at the same time as the other WWE title. Just because WWE decided to add a spot in the lineage where there were two champions at the same time, they were still two different titles being held by different people. And 7 is, again, a combination of two different titles that hadn't been unified before.

All 8 of those are distinctly different titles that were born out of distinctly different circumstances regardless of the lineage WWE chooses to use. It's a mess. Especially for such a short period of time. I can see it over the span of 100 years as companies are coming and going and merging titles becomes a necessity. This is all WWE just being fickle and not knowing what to do though. lol

IMO, it is the biggest clusterfuck creatively, in terms of why would you want to be (or root for or against) a wrestler if there's no clear definition of who the best in the world/company is and so there's no ultimate goal for the wrestler's career. I know, kayfabe is dead, blah, blah, blah. If you don't treat it somewhat consistently seriously though (and this is just one of the (many) ways WWE has simply shit on their own product), then what's at stake and the outcome has no importance. As a result, there's no reason for me to actually or even want to tune in to watch.

Kayfabe aside, shit has to matter in the story.

I love when people talk about how the outcome of the matches don't matter and the titles are just props. Until WWE starts building shows based on angles and WrestleMania is being headlined by simply a heated confrontation, the match outcomes better matter and the titles better be a pretty important/prestigious prop or else why the fuck is anyone supposed to care?

1, 3, 6, and 7 are under the lineage of the WWE Championship (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WWE_Championship).

Technically you are correct, but that has no bearing onto how things are perceived. If eight actors play one character in a TV show, you can still say "Hang on, it's only one character -- chill out," but if people are seeing the mechanics of it all, then it really doesn't matter.

To the layperson -- someone perhaps not technically researching title histories -- having the WCW Title change its name, the WWF Title unified with it, a new belt come in, a new old belt come in opposite that, a third belt introduced, one of those belts dropped, the remaining two belts smooshed together, a new belt created opposite it could get quite overwhelming.

It's about as ridiculous as saying "the stakes don't matter in a story." Um, okay? So why I am reading this book, or watching this movie? The belts are your easier way to introduce stakes. "I want to be the best!" "No, I am the best!" "Let's fight and see who is the best!" They're not the only stakes you can have, but they are certainly stakes. When you take the importance of them away, you might as well be saying "This doesn't matter." Every time a champion loses a non-title match, that's my emotional response. "Okay, being the champion means nothing. So why I am watching?"

Mr. Nerfect
08-28-2017, 05:49 PM

A championship should be the answer to the question "Who is the best?" If you have two champions, you really don't have two champions -- you have two contenders. They should fight to find out who is the best.

I think this issue is underrated in terms of how off-putting it would be to casual fans. When it comes to comic books, cartoons, combat sports or wrestling, one of the most innocent and base pleasures of those forms is "Who would win between..." You want to know who the most bad-ass is. When you have "two World Champions" you are instantly negating that knowledge as a possibility.

Not that there is any doubt as to who is better between Brock Lesnar and Jinder Mahal, haha. But how is being WWE Champion supposed to mean something if everybody knows there is someone who can kick the champion's ass?

D-tier name? It's the name used on one of the best wrestling games of all time.

Agree with everything else though. They talked for like 20 seconds on Raw about having this match before being interrupted by the Miz. Also Cena not taking it seriously at all on Raw makes this feel so stupid right now.

If its like the Cruiser title change and other head scratching decisions, purely done to artificially spike RAW's rating for the week.

WWE has only 2 weeks left before the NFL season onslaught begins.

But will this work as a ratings spike? We already knew both dudes would be at the show and now instead of looking to see tension build and seeing if there's an interesting way to get there, well have the usual "hurrr you're a part time, no I'm not!" Cena and opponent in-ring promo.

Wasn't it a "bullshit" title? I mean, he was led to believe he was supposed to win the WHC, but WWF wasn't keen on having a world champion that wasn't contracted and as a result, Inoki got the bait & switch? I think I might be confusing stories here and am actually just looking for clarification.

Bad News Gertner
08-29-2017, 11:24 PM
So the World Martial Arts Title was created for Inoki in 78.

Inoki won the WWF title from Backlund in Japan in 1979. The plan was for Inoki to drop the title back to Backlund right before Backlund's tour end. Instead of dropping the title, the match ended in a no contest. The WWF being double crossed refused to acknowledge Inoki's win. They tried to get Inoki over in the U.S but it didn't work at all. From what I've heard, Inoki booked the no contest to try and get a rematch at MSG. Nobody in North America ever gave a shit about Inoki or pretty much all of the Japanesse wrestlers except for Tiger Mask and later the Bomb Angels/Glamour Girls. And that includes guys like Yoshi Yatsu, Fujinami, Choshu etc...

From the front page...

Sexy Star released a statement on lucha libre site R de Rudo about the Rosemary situation at AAA Triplemania this past weekend, where Sexy Star injured Rosemary with a legit armbreaker submission.
The statement is loosely translated from Spanish.

"These days have been very difficult for me. On Saturday I had a championship fight; It was very hard. I think it all got out of hand. I don’t know, it’s a situation that right now I’m a bit confused about. I want to keep quiet and when I feel it’s time, touch the subject. Men, women, they want to finish me; Retire me from this sport. I’m here. As I said at the beginning: I will not stop, on behalf of all women who have been abused, physically or psychologically.

I think I have to be stronger. If at that moment I went through a depression and left, I will leave this one too. I was doing what I had to do, what people deserve, to claw until the end. That happened, I submitted her. It seems that the girl is injured; I don’t know, I’m not aware of it. That’s all I can say."

lol Looking for sympathy, playing the victim, kayfabing. There's a little bit of everything.

Apparently the reason why Rollins has the lyrics of "Burn It Down" in his entrance theme was due to Vince suddenly hating his theme having a pause in it. Those lyrics were the best idea provided by Creative and/or management.

Also revealed the official reason his curbstomp was banned was due to Vince suddenly not wanting him to have the move as champion because of marketing reasons. Only made the decision after a Today Show appearance by Rollins and the move being among the stuff shown in a video for Rollins. Didn't like the idea of a curbstomp being used to represent the company nationally.

Edge and Christian buried Sexy Star as well on their podcast. Edge even said "If anyone had enough of a legit beef to take liberties on someone else in the ring, Matt Hardy would have with me. And yeah, we worked stiff on each other, but he was nothing other than a professional"

It says a lot about how thick that line is and how completely unacceptable it is to cross it. Still can't get over that Yoshiko is still allowed to work in wrestling business.

Feel like someone will eventually pay an even heavier price if people like these aren't blackballed.

Apparently the reason why Rollins has the lyrics of "Burn It Down" in his entrance theme was due to Vince suddenly hating his theme having a pause in it. Those lyrics were the best idea provided by Creative and/or management.[/url]

Because I'm not really interested in Rollins at the moment, I tend to skip his stuff so I had no idea that he had "Burn It Down" added to his theme.

I've just went back to give it a listen and it sounds terrible.

It reminded me of the vocals you would get on the original themes from WWF Attitude.

I can understand the curbstomp thing (though that was one of the best finishing moves of recent years in WWE), but the whole pause in the intro thing, just seems like Vince coming across as a petulant child all the time.

I thought the Curbstomp looked horrible. It's a running Stomp. I much prefer whatever the hell he calls his knee finisher

Rumour going around that CF0$ might be on the way out, because Jim Johnston did the new Corbin and Emma themes. Yeah, this is what I thought it was supposed to be in reference to. He's "burning down" the establishment because he's cool like that now.

But the thing about Vince and the pause in the music, just shows what a micro managing manipulator he is, if anything the pause builds the music up when it kicks in again, but Vince was seemingly tearing his hair out about a silent pause that needed to be filled? Think he's more to worry about in his increasingly stale product than music with a 2 second empty spot.

Read about the curb stomp finisher and it was changed because a tv show had an interview with rollins and they showed several clips of him in action and the curb stomp was included and Vince didn't like it?

Then again this is the same guy that has banned the piledriver (by far one of the most basic moves there is) while other much more dangerous and complicated moves are used on a daily basis. :wtf: I'm not even sure if the owen austin spot was what led to the piledriver getting banned, as that was a fucked up variation of it, not the more basic, safer method.

Sexy Star released another statement regarding the Rosemary injury and just like the first time, would have been better off not giving it or actually apologizing instead.

Now she claims Rosemary's injury is fake and this just being the media and others trying to slander her reputation.

Media didn't hold back with their headlines like "She dislocated her shoulder on purpose" or "She broke her arm intentionally" affirming the supposed injury, with the only reference being the letter posted on twitter and the end of the match shown from different angles at which at no moment does it show her being injured. And on the contrary it shows her walking off on her own and using her hands to do so. Some even assured that I applied the hold with bad intentions, raising my hips to injure her, something that is also not in the video. Many people in the media and people online couldn't even match their stories. Some mentioned she injured her shoulder, others the elbow, others the whole arm.

I wasn't worried about the situation, because I repeat, I saw with my own eyes that she wasn't injured. I didn't assume, I proved it by seeing that she wasn't being attended by Medical personnel, she wasn't taken to a Hospital, there was no medical equipment being used on her or a stretcher, which is what happens when anyone suffers any kind of injury. In my wrestling career I have seen many injuries and I myself have been injured and believe me, none of the things that happen when someone gets injured happened the night of TRIPLEMANIA 25 after the Reina de Reinas match.

Maybe it's just me. Maybe it's just because I haven't been watching the product at all recently. It's a cool match and all, in theory. I get that. It just doesn't have that "major" feel to it, IMO, if I'm being honest. At least not so far. And I honestly, don't care to or have any interest to watch the product to even see if it develops that "major" feel for me. I hope not and I'd like to be into it, but maybe I'm just done with it all together. Sadly, I just don't know anymore. It seems like none of it matters or is remotely enough to justify my time and attention. WM season to me is like watching the NFL playoffs when I don't have any teams in it, (which is almost always), it's cool, but I don't really care and I'm just hoping for an entertaining show, and usually end up mildly entertained but it's mostly meh. :-\

Seems Anthem might have never bothered to buy or transfer the trademarks of GFW from Jarrett so he still legally owns the name and all trademarks associated with it.

If Anthem was really utilizing those letters without having any actual ownership, all they did was help raise the profile of the Global Force Wrestling name internationally, which in hindsight, was a really dumb business decision.

Young Bucks: We don't need the WWE to be successful.

Also Young Bucks: We are using WWE trademarked slogans and calling out WWE talent to raise our profile.

Do I have it right?

WWE doesn't have a trademark on the phrase. They could probably claim prior art I guess.

Have The Young Bucks sent out a statement trying to play the victims for being told they have to come up with their own shit yet?

No, but they are quite scared that the WWE Stooge who delivered the cease and desist orders can apparently raise Adam Cole back from the dead.

Carlos Mencia didn't steal people's shit because he's an uncreative hack. He was just working everyone. GENIUS!

Good thing they got issued that totally legit cease and desist written on a Nando's napkin then.

I have no clue what you're talking about. Was this a video they did? I haven't watched any of them. If I wanted to watch a couple dipshits with no charisma awkwardly try to be funny on YouTube I'd watch pretty much every other amateur comedy video on YouTube.

Turns out that cease and desist you thought was hilarious is just a storyline from the Young Bucks youtube show which you don't think is hilarious.

This just goes to prove the age-old theory that literally everything Droford says is incorrect.

Also, I assume the WWE must have actually sent them a cease and desist because, as we know, The Young Bucks can't do anything "creatively" without someone from WWE doing it first.

Actually they do. Even if WWE hasn't registered the trademark, they still have a common law trademark as the first to commercially use the phrase. WWE just doesn't have a registered statutory trademark on the phrase. The reason to register a trademark is that registration creates a legal rebuttable presumption that you were the first to commercially use and thus, own the trademark.

"Where Are They Now?" appears to have returned but this time, with Renee Young acting as a host.

Personally, I would have preferred it without Renee. It was good the way it was.

Couldn't agree more. Christian was always damn good, but the whole Vince McMahon/Blue dot BS and Christian not fitting the main event mold vince was looking for.

His run in Impact was nothing less than stellar.

Your logic jumped the shark, as a poster, a while ago, but let's play:

1. I don't think you know what working means.

2. That people don't pay enough attention to them to take the time to determine whether or not the bullshit surrounding them is their doing or a corporate entity's is not a credit to their ability to get people to invest in them.

3. That people don't pay enough attention to them to care whether or not the bullshit surrounding them is their doing or a corporate entity's is not a credit to their ability to get people to invest in them. It's important that you distinguish between these two points.

Turns out that cease and desist you thought was hilarious is just a storyline from the Young Bucks youtube show which you don't think is hilarious.

4. Can you actually not tell the difference between why people who don't like The Young Bucks would find it funny to find out they got pinged on gimmick infringement, but would not be amused by them pulling the prank on themselves? Holy shit.
