ah the days where you gave your computer AIDS thanks to Limewire and Kazaa
I always used Napster and Limewire. Never had much use for Kazaa, as Kazaa itself always seemed to fuck up my PC. OG Napster was decent for dial-up and for getting what you were actually looking for.

From a Xtreme Pro Wrestling show after ECW shut down.
For years it was rumored New Jack purposely overshot the toss as payback for a botched spot in ECW between the two that resulted in him suffering a serious head injury.

Something in WWE booking that occurred to me recently that's very telling of Vince's mentality - how often do you hear about male babyfaces being "best friends"?
Female wrestlers are routinely "best friends", and male heels (Zayn and Owens, Jericho and Owens) are routinely described as best friends - but Reigns? Cena? Lashley? AJ Styles? Do these people have "best friends"? No - and I think it's because Vince sees friendship, or any sort of emotional connection to another person, as emotional weakness and unmanly, and assumes the audience would agree.
So you end up with heels that feel like real, fleshed out human beings, while the babyfaces are cookie-cutter "rebels" going it alone, because Vince thinks fans will only relate to a face that's "sticking it to the man".

This is one of the things that sticks out to me watching Memphis wrestling. The heels gets a beatdown long enough to get heat, and then a bunch of faces, led by Lawler, would come in to save a day. Sometimes it's just Lawler himself, but it gets a bigger point across. Poor sap in the ring getting his ass kicked but he's a good guy, and people don't want to see the good guy get hurt. And when Lawler comes out, it says to the audience that he sticks up for the little guy. By leading a charge, it says to the audience that he is the kind of person every other good guy looks up to and they'll back him up because of it.
That does more than declaring yourself the Big Dog or having "good matches." Wrestling is a visual medium. Show, don't tell. Wrestling as an Athletic Performance will always make less money than Wrestling as a Morality Play.

Vince and co. do not understand the basic premise of show don't tell. Every promo is exposition. It's infuriating.
Mr. Nerfect
07-17-2018, 02:21 PM
It's not only exposition, but it's often redundant exposition. I noticed it a few years ago, but Seth Rollins cut the same promo on the same show twice, and to get to that point they didn't need it in the first place.
Plus, it's often exposition in the form of an inauthentic, pantomimic soliloquy. People don't trade zingers like they try to get their talent to. They all look like fucking losers. Give me someone foaming at the mouth that is less concerned with being verbally articulate and more concerned having some actual fucking pride in themselves.

Exposition is sometimes necessary but should always be used sparsely. It's the very definition of telling instead of showing... or even worse, telling and showing as a way to tell the fans the reaction you want from the.

Exactly.
One of the biggest problems with WWE is that they look down on the intelligence of their audience. They think kids are stupider than they are, and can't attract them, so they end up doing on the nose exposition with a bunch of 38+ men.

Even when they do establish friendships, another big problem is they rarely have their bigger stars help out their friends when needed the most. Cena being the biggest offender of this.
Or when they do get involved, it just comes off as trying to get some cheap cheers than the big face star being concerned over the wel-lbeing of his pals. Reigns has been an offender of this in recent years.

More time has passed between Brock Lesnar's WWE return to present day (6 years, 3 months) than between Brock's last match before going to UFC and his WWE return (4 years, 10 months).
Seems weird that it's been that long. Mostly because the product has felt the fucking same for nearly the entire time Lesnar's been back and, frankly, probably a couple of years before that.

Yeah at least in recent years, that seems to be the growing trend.
The ties between football and wrestling go back decades with several good players in the past going into wrestling because it paid better or was easier to make the big bucks. Then you have others like the Rock who were decent or good at the college level but never went beyond it prior to becoming wrestlers.
O, i imagine some decent players turned wrestlers in the past. Like who for example?

Yeah based on an article I read while looking up football players as wrestlers, it mentioned he tried out for the Patriots and Giants but didn't make it out of training camp. Supposedly the Dolphins were still willing to give him an offer so I assume he must have been good as a player in college. He rejected it since he already made up his mind on being a wrestler instead.

I wonder about stuff like that sometimes. Like, what if Snoop Dogg didn't go on to release the "longest awaited rap album of all time", and instead, focused on football? From what I understand, he was a standout QB. Would he have been Heisman material in college and possibly gone on to the NFL? Would he have "smoked too much" and been suspended/forced out like Rickey Williams? And how different would not only the music world but the sports world be (or pop culture in general) if he made a shift in focus back then? What if Kevin Nash never got hurt in the first place, and kept playing basketball? Would his career doing that outstripped the lack of Diesel, the Curtain Call, The Outsiders, nWo, and so-on...? There would be a lot of shit that wouldn't have taken place and other plans put in motion.

Again, I don't know, because I don't give a fuck about the Seminoles, but I thought people talked about not liking standing across from Ron on the field back in his day because you were going to get put on your ass.
Meanwhile, I *only* remember Mongo from the Horsemen, and not playing for the Bears. Wasn't his claim to fame that he was part of the Super Bowl team? I remember Jim McMahon, I remember Fridge, Singletary, Payton... I don't remember Steve.
Being fair about that, though, given where I live, I don't give a fuck about Ziggler's accomplishments at Kent St. not so much because it wasn't admirable, but because I'm a YSU fan, and fuck Kent State. It's really less pronounced now, but back then, they were kinda rivals.

The Attitude Era for all intents and purposes died at WM17, although you can make the argument that everything from WM17 through to the start of the brand split was still part of it to an extent. I think WWE themselves even say it ran through 2002, they continued using the Attitude branding in the show intros right up until the day Vince uttered the words "Ruthless Aggression".
But still, it's been at least 16 years ago that it ended. Rapidly approaching 2 decades. And yet we still have Triple H and The Undertaker in prime Mania slots every year.

To me The Attitude Era went from WM14 to WM17. The New Generation Era ended at Survivor Series 96. From 96-98 I always think of it as The Pre-Attitude Era where things slowly were setting up for it. After 17, WCW was gone, and Austin turned heel. Once Austin turned, it was over. Between WM17, and the invasion, there were some PPV's with great matches. They had a very deep roster. The Angle vs Benoit feud was amazing.
They never built anyone up after Cena except for Roman so this is what they get. They have to rely on guys way past their prime.

Daniel Cormier did a recent interview where he sounded very WWE-friendly. I know the guy is a fan of professional wrestling, but do you think it's only a matter of time until he makes the jump?
Cormier is a big WWE fan, can't ever talk with Ariel without it coming up. I do think there is a possible WWE program after he retires, especially if Cain Valesquez gets involved and especially if he defeats Lesnar at UFC next year. The reason I mentioned Cain is because that has been rumored off and on a few times plus he was at NXT tapings this week, as a fan or backstage I do not know.

I wonder if the WWE would make Velasquez cover up his "Brown Pride" tattoo? I can honestly see Vince wanting to segue into Brock vs. Velasquez and Brock vs. Cormier at WrestleMania events in order to bulk them up. I can see Vince thinking of them as "celebrity involvement" and seeing the perceived success he is having with Ronda Rousey tipping his tastes in that direction.

Speaking of MVP, I still can't believe that WWE bothered to bring him back for Raw 25 just to have him sit in the background in a backstage segment. The Rumble was just days away and he almost certainly would've gotten a really nice reaction as opposed to any number of people in that match where the fans sat on their hands when they entered.

Also, didn't know that WarGames was an annual thing now. Not mad about it.

And I don't think there was a single kickout of a finisher. Crazy concept nowadays.
JR actually pushed the fact that Omega has kicked out of Okada's finisher but Okada hasn't kicked out of Omega's and it wasn't just to build up Okada kicking out of Omega's finisher.

I think Cornette's "he should be ran out of the business" is a bit much. Just because everyone in wrestling has done shit like that (and a large part of why no one really draws). But I think his objective assessment on the guy's skills are right on the money. He's a great athlete who can pull off moves, but is kind of spotty when it comes to telling a story. Haven't seen that 2/3 Falls Match though. Saw the first one between them and thought it was very good/lower-g great. Lots of spots that took me out of the match. I don't remember anything else about the match though, except that Omega didn't hit his finish.
I sincerely preferred Styles and Cena from the same month. So that "six star match" wasn't even the best for its fucking month for me. I think that's WWE fatigue setting in on people and causing them to overrate anything they find slightly enjoyable (Braun Strowman, Alexa Bliss, Elias, a lot of New Japan, etc.). I'm glad people are finding fun, but I don't accept objective arguments that Kenny Omega is the greatest wrestler in the world. Sorry. He got upstaged by CJ Parker at a recent show.

Seems WWE could be facing a similar PR problem that Kenny Omega had to deal with for the CEO X NJPW event. Same sex offender was reported to have been hanging around NXT during the recent TV tapings there.
Unlike with Omega's claims, WWE might be more aware of this guy due to his girlfriend (Amber Nova) currently works for the company.

The thing that makes me love Tony so much is when his podcast came out I quickly realized that he has the most irreverent sense of humor of anyone in the wrestling. He is so quick to make fun of himself. He is honest about when he thinks he was phoning it in as well. What Happened When is by far my favorite podcast, and it's a great way to go back and enjoy WCW with a different much more comical perspective. You'll also find out how much of a fan Tony is of the sport, going back to his youth, which makes his entire career much more meaningful to me. He left with a bad run at the end of WCW but now has this amazing podcast and is doing great work for MLW. Maybe it's my revisionist nostalgia but when I go back and watch 90's WWF/WCW, I'd prefer to listen to Tony any day. JR is so damn angry all the time. Still the best don't get me wrong, but the counter to JR was Tony and he was totally different.

07-20-2018, 03:15 PM
A little thing I've been chewing over in regards to the commentary of Tony Schiavone versus Jim Ross', is that Ross would call shit out when it didn't make sense. He had this "Well, this is going to be bowling shoe ugly" attitude towards matches that didn't work, or angles that didn't make sense. As a result, whether consciously or not, I think fans learnt to "trust" JR. If something sucked, he would let them know, and when something was awesome, the passion was contagious.
It's not that Schiavone can't call or add to things when he needs to. WCW sucked so much that I think beyond simply not caring or being burnt out or whatever, you only have so much cache you can chew through before people stop trusting a word you say. To earn more of that trust from audiences, he would need to point out that most of WCW didn't make sense, and that we were all stupid for not watching the WWF. It turned him into a dishonest used car salesman trying to offload stock from years ago.

Stephanie McMahon is going to make a "historic announcement" on Raw. Rumors suggest it being an all-woman PPV in September/October. In a perfect world, that would get me excited, because it means that you'd need to have depth and stories in your division. What it will likely mean is Alexa Bliss vs. Ronda Rousey in a rematch, Nia Jax vs. Mickie James, Carmella vs. Charlotte, etc.

Also, like most people, I also thought that Sasha & Bayley will be the first to win them. That was my first thought when I saw the image.
If they don't win them, then I can assure you that the first team to win them will be either Becky & Naomi or Becky & Charlotte.

According to Alexa Bliss, the reason why her in-ring skills and match quality haven't improved since getting called up is pretty much due to being a champion is her only source for heel heat and her laziness for bumping for others.
Its pretty much why nobody comes out looking good in a feud with her in the end since everything revolves on her needing to be in title matches and getting the last laugh instead of helping make others look good in the ring.
Bliss recently spoke to Cheap Seats podcast about whether it bothers her that she doesn't get more credit for the work she does in the ring. She said her character doesn't allow her to do extravagant spots to pop the crowd. Her job is to make people hate her and that's what she does. Bliss explained how she uses her moveset to establish herself as more of a heatseeker in as many levels as possible. Things could always change if she becomes a babyface, but that's not her job at the moment.
"I don't, but here's the thing, I'm a bad guy. Who likes a bad guy that does a lot of flashy things? You know what I mean? It is my job to be hated, so if that means coming in when the opportunity is right and cashing in on other people's misfortunes in the ring that is what I am going to do.
"Now, when I become a good guy, are people going to see a brand new skill set from me? Absolutely. Right now, my job isn't to wow the crowd with my in-ring ability, my job is to be hated, which is what I love to do. My job is to be hated because people get that much madder when I win a title because they talk about me not being able to wrestle in the ring---I can, but I am choosing not to, and the fact that when I win and they are getting angry that only means that I am doing my job that much more."

They'd be the only team that makes sense to become the inaugural champions. They get the tag belts, have tremendous success and then their feud boils over when either they get put into a triple threat for the RAW Women's Championship or one bests the other in a #1 contender's match and one ultimately turns on the other, either to win the belt and "screw" the other out of it or out of jealousy because their partner won it.

I dunno -- I'd say things have been going down for a while since then. WWE probably hasn't had a good overall year since 2005, and that was mainly the WrestleMania season I am thinking of. Things would turn grim by the end of the year. I quite liked 2008 for the company, but that might be me cherry-picking stuff I liked to get me through.
I'm really struggling to think of the last truly good year in wrestling. Is it too selective to suggest 2013? Daniel Bryan was killing it in six-man tags against The Shield. SummerSlam 2013 was Cena vs. Bryan and Punk vs. Brock. WrestleMania drew money because you had The Rock there, even though the card felt disjointed. Maybe it's hard to call it a successful year, per se, but there was a lot of good I'd kill for now.

Matt Riddle to WWE... very good pick. I was hoping that Matt would’ve been the ace for ROH because aside from The Bucks and Cody that promotion is full of guys I just don’t care to see. I would’ve loved to see him get a spot in NJPW but his drug failures make that a no go. Wherever he went that isn’t WWE he could’ve been a major lead player. Not saying he can’t be that in WWE but there is always a risk that they will turn a diamond back into coal.
If you don’t know Matt, he is a combination of RVD/Kerry Von Erich and add in a shooter element to tie it all together.

Speaking of the women's division, what's the story with rousey? They seem to be using her in tv match terms incredibly sparingly to say the least. Do they not think she's ready for being put in matches on a consistent basis, or is her (rumoured 1 year contract) like Lesnar's and she only has x amount of appearance dates?
Emperor Smeat
07-23-2018, 07:15 PM
A mix of them not wanting to rush her in-ring work and lying from the start about her being a full time wrestler.
She's both their biggest mainstream star right now and a big reason why their new tv deals were massive. Last thing WWE wants is to piss off NBC and/or FOX before the new tv deals start by giving her the same star attrition booking almost everyone else gets on the main roster.

NXT filters into main roster WWE. I find it hard to invest in their television when I know the end-game and it's becoming a trope cycle. Impact Wrestling is TNA. I saw a clip out of curiosity recently -- Eddie Edwards and Sami Callihan were fighting over a score. ROH has felt very cold to me lately. Nothing against them, but nothing really for them either. Lucha Underground is ridiculous. I haven't watched MLW yet. New Japan are people I am actively rooting for, but I'm worried about taking that big dive, because I've disliked things I've seen, and that might be my last bridge to modern wrestling. If at least one woman wrestles on the card as an official participant in a match, then that ppv is excluded from this list. I'm even going to be generous and count it if a match was on Heat or the preshow.

Impact Wrestling is TNA. I saw a clip out of curiosity recently -- Eddie Edwards and Sami Callihan were fighting over a score.
Impact Wrestling is not TNA. Don Callis and Scott D'Amore have done a great job turning the company around. Slammiversary proved that and TNA is dead, this is iMPACT!
