On a positive note, I just have to talk about how amazing Chad Gable is at his job. He’s constantly a bright spark of wrestling every week. He’s hilarious. I was watching his stuff on Raw with a huge smile on my face. He’s just casually throwing out tiger suplexes on Raw and taking the best DDT bump in the business.

Every now and then I go through the WWE roster wiki just to find something that totally blows my mind. For a while, it was Sylvain Grenier being an agent with the company. I see he’s gone, but according to Wikipedia, Jason Jordan is now the “Senior Producer” in WWE. I was also surprised to see that Ken Doane is an agent.

Billy Kidman is not listed on their roster page, but I looked him up and saw he was still with the company. Apparently Kidman was released in 2005 before being re-hired in 2007 as a trainer before he became a producer. I have ZERO recollection of him leaving at all. Dwayne Johnson’s real name wasn’t Rocky Maivia. Roman Reigns is not really Roman Reigns. AJ Styles is not really a Styles. Becky isn’t really a Lynch. Charlotte’s first name is Ashley. It’s annoying when people that have been on the air for so long change their name, but in “WWE Kayfabe” that’s just part of their culture, I guess. Like a young lion finally getting some colorful tights.

Yeah it's basically standard Vince. Sometimes seems silly and is silly but he has his reasons.

Only time it'd actually be very stupid is if he changed Cody's name or something, where the dude is established. Also, it'd be great if some of the name changes didn't sound like they were invented in a roleplaying game, but I'm guessing some of it is on the wrestlers for thinking of their new awful names.

Daniel Bryan is a good one. I remember being weirded out by that at first too. At least he started as Daniel Bryan on-air there. But he did call himself Bryan Danielson on NXT once. It was kind of out there that it wasn’t his real name.

I get annoyed when guys drop names, but does anyone really miss Alexander Rusev, Antonio Cesaro or Elias Samson? Miro goes by one name in AEW, Claudio is trying to trademark “CSRO” and Ezekiel is just Ezekiel.

First names with no last surname used to bother me. Now I’m just “whatever.” Sheamus worked. Butch is doing better in WWE than he probably thought he would as a smaller technical guy with an accent.

And it does make sense to have this IP trademarked.

It’s jarring but it’s not without precedent. Like, even if you know Kacy Catanzaro is Kacy Catanzaro, her going by Katana Chase or whatever her name is isn’t her real name. Maybe some fans didn’t think Kacy Catanzaro was her real name either. This is just her ring name.

I wish there was more coherence week-to-week, but people are used to wrestlers using fake names. Awkward is probably the right word for it.

It's really weird that names are changing from NXT to RAW/SD while NXT is still on USA in primetime every week. On one hand, WWE presents the show on equal footing by giving it two hours on TV instead of one hour on their own network. On the other hand, it is now very clear that NXT exists as its own universe because the people you watched on that show are not really the same people you're now going to see on RAW and SD.

Dunno. I guess we as fans have kinda known that for a while, but it's wacky to see the company pretty much confirm it now.

It is not disputable that CM Punk is one of the greatest wrestlers of all time and he has the right to do and say anything he wants because he earnes it. Its fine if you dont like him and don't want to watch his matches, so the best thing would be to sit down, shut up and not watch his matches.

I have to seriously question his decision to sign with NXT/WWE.

He is the same size as Kenta, but older than Kenta was at the time of his signing. What makes Kushida think he will have any kind of success in NXT before getting stuck on 205 Live?

And forget any kind of main roster run. If Shinsuke got buried with everything be brings to the table, I don't see any Japanese wrestler ever getting any kind of success on the main roster.

Apparently WWE were of the belief that he'll be returning to New Japan. Timing-wise, he could theoretically go back for Best of Super Juniors which starts in mid-May. Would he want to go back to doing that when he'd already done all there was to do in BOSJ, I'm not sure.

But really, working anywhere outside of WWE you kinda have the freedom to show up wherever you want within reason so who knows.

I think he still could have found his way to WWE and gotten far on personality and “less is more” wrestling. At that point, who knows how much longer he could have extended his career. Hell in a Cell with Taker still seems like it would have been pretty pivotal to him getting to the next level but after that I’m not so sure he needed to be a bump machine.

I think that’s off the mark. Fans of any TV show want compelling writing and stars. It’s an easy excuse to say that fans were lost to MMA (which many would argue is a completely different market) and because the show is PG.

It’s because they write bad television consistently and have no stars.

People don’t generally watch wrestling for the wrestling. They watch it for the stories and the special moments, which WWE choose to give you once a year.

If anything, they, along with AEW, are making a product specifically for the fans of sweaty shirtless guys grappling, because they don’t offer anything else beyond the wrestling.

It took me a long time to appreciate Bret Hart, but he’s easily one of the greatest of all-time. Way more wrestlers need to look at what he did and how he did, learn what they can, and adapt it.

Do not want to see him as a manager, lol. Special appearances and sometimes backing someone? Sure.

Given all the pieces they had going into Revolution, the smartest main event for Double or Nothing (in my opinion) would have been Adam Page defending against MJF with Bret Hart there to present the belt to the winner as a throwback to their very first show. Punk could have wrestled Jeff Hardy. But alas.

He never rushed a damned thing. No movement was wasted. It all went toward the story of the match. Plus, I'd rather watch Bret do a fucking backbreaker than literally ANYBODY do another tope or top-rope hurricanrana. Reigns ends up winning the match and for the rest of the year, Lesnar tries everything to get rid of Micro Clown who constantly annoys him. Lesnar comes up with different ways to take out Micro Clown including assassination attempts, kidnappings and even injecting Micro Clown with COVID-19, but Micro Clown always comes out unharmed.


Now that's WWE worth watching!

I absolutely love that Micro Crown idea. I like the way it doesn’t make Reigns look bad at all. It takes nut shots to bring him down, and Micro Clown even passes out from trying to hurt him. It gives us a fresh reason for Reigns vs. Brock, with Reigns getting another big win. It also provides context for Brock being a clear babyface, which is going to be hard to maintain without him taking up for someone else.

I wouldn’t have Brock get rid of Micro Clown though. I get him initially trying to get rid of him. Injecting him with COVID-19 is topical. But in the end Brock should learn to love Micro Clown. Having tag matches together would give Brock a level of vulnerability too.

There’s also potential to do something with Reigns doctor too. Was he in on it? Could this be a way to bring Dr. Shelby back? Could the doctor be a wrestler? He can be Dr. Rawsmack and give people the Rawsmack Test as a finish. That is if they pass the mental health evaluation he makes everybody pass before they get in the ring with him.

Cornette has spoken about this in the past. He’s said that if you see the vignettes you’d think you’re looking at one of the biggest stars in the wrestling industry. But when it came to his antics outside the ring, he just couldn’t get them under control. Cornette mentioned a brother “whose name is almost Sean” who would mouth off and constantly get Sean into trouble.

Plus, if you think about it, it’s hard to think of an actually good O’Haire or Jindrak match. They had that athleticism and they make for fun gifs now, but they both were pretty much just there on their best days.

They will ignore the stigma of wrestling, the global appeal of one product over another, and its content rating and how that affects ad rates. It’s Meltzer talk so he always had something for his newsletter on slow news weeks, and was largely used to trash WWE to sell those letters to disgruntled WWE fans — the ones you will find angry online looking to buy content outside WWE’s purview.

He’s carried the narrative into AEW, ignoring that their audience is largely going to age out of the “desirable” 18-49 demo by the time TV contract negotiations are through, and to focus on ways he can twist AEW into being a success when it’s just not as popular as the other product. Period.
