I haven't seen either of these guys perform, so I'm keen to see what they can do in the ring.

A part of me feels bad for being the opposite of this. I'm not really "hyped" to see them.

I do hope though that Devitt loses the whole comic book body paint thing. El Generico losing his mask and being renamed as Sami Zayn has made him more appealing to me, and I do look forward to seeing him on the main roster in the future.

I'm not really a fan of "indy guys" bringing their "indy thing" to WWE. :-\

As for Steen, I don't know what it is, but there's something about him I don't like. He reminds me of Rusev though. Just the fact that he only seems to have two facial expressions, judging by his photos. I do think though that Steen could benefit a lot from getting a different look. Right now, he just looks like your stereotypical "neckbeard" wrestling smark. Maybe lose the beard and grow his hair a tiny bit more.

I do hope I'm proved wrong though about these guys, as I actually like it when I'm proved wrong when it comes to the "indy darlings" being signed by WWE.

It's happened with CM Punk, Daniel Bryan and Cesaro.

I had heard all about them during their time in the independent scene, and when they arrived in WWE, I just thought "meh", but they all won me over and now I love all three of them.

I'll just have to wait and see what these guys are like in the ring.

WWE invades the 2014 summer blockbusters

This summer has had no shortage of action and intrigue at the multiplex, but what would happen if WWE took over the biggest blockbusters of 2014? Check out these posters featuring Superstars and Divas starring in this year’s hottest movies, then download and print your favorites!

http://www.wwe.com/f/wysiwyg/image/2014/08/How_To_Train_Your_Beast_642.jpg

In this 3D animated family film, a Viking named Heyman the Verbose must somehow control a fire-breathing beast known as Brock Lesnar in preparation for SummerSlam — an annual festival in the mysterious land of Los Angeles. Can The Beast Incarnate bring honor to his homeland by defeating the charismatic and cunning John Cena?

http://www.wwe.com/f/wysiwyg/image/2014/08/20140820_DaysOfFutureYes_642xvariableV2.jpg

In an apocalyptic world now ruled by the tyrannical Authority, a bearded and sagely Daniel Bryan must venture back in time to the year 2010, where he join forces with his younger (and clean-shaven) self and a group of unlikely allies known as The Nexus to stop The Authority before its rise to power. Can Bryan secure the future of the “Yes!” Movement?

http://www.wwe.com/f/wysiwyg/image/2014/08/20140812_Nemisis2_642xvar.jpg

What happens when an unstable basket case (Dean Ambrose) moves next door to his moneyed mortal enemy (Seth Rollins)? See hijinks ensue as these polar opposites and former friends tear their homes apart in a series of wildly barbaric encounters involving steel chairs, wooden tables and even cinder blocks! There goes the neighborhood!

http://www.wwe.com/f/wysiwyg/image/2014/08/movieposter_malificent_final_article2.jpg

You think you know all there is to know about Stephanie McMahon, but you don’t know the full story. Watch as the fairytale origins of one of WWE’s most iconic villains are reimagined and told from the perspective of The Billionaire Baroness herself. Is she truly as evil as the stories would have us believe?

http://www.wwe.com/f/wysiwyg/image/2014/08/Guardians_642xvariable.jpg

Get “Hooked on a Feeling” with this hilarious space opera starring an intergalactic adventurer (Stardust) and his ragtag group of allies as they protect the cosmos from evil. The legendary Stardust joins a steel-willed warrior (AJ Lee), a tattooed powerhouse (Batista) and the unusual duo of Ballistic Bull and Kroot (El Torito and The Great Khali) as they put aside their differences for the good of the WWE Universe. Be sure to stay through the credits!

The word in the television industry is that Spike TV is getting out of the wrestling business so that likely means that they won’t be starting their own promotion. Apparently, people around Spike TV were saying this as far back as May.

There are key people in TNA that also believe that TNA is not getting renewed. They’re is no set date for cancellation. The impression being given is that TNA has a place to go but it’s not a major place (my guess is that it’s WGN). If that place picks them up in February, for example, then Spike would allow them to stay until February to allow them to make a smooth transition.

The issue with TNA going to a lesser known station is that they would probably take a hit in the ratings and if they are getting paid less than what they make on Spike TV then they would have to do a show on a smaller budget.

I'd assume last week was all the convincing Spike TV needed about TNA and wrestling's future in general for the network. They made way more ad money replaying old Cops episodes than Impact usually generated for Thursdays.

Also probably have no confidence any more for TNA in general since the move to a friendlier Wednesday spot ended up killing a third of their ratings.

Feel like WWE is dropping the ball by not giving Angle a job.

I totally get they're afraid of his past health issues, but he doesn't have to actually compete in the ring. Thought a great way of hyping the Cena/Lesnar rematch would be if Cena brought Angle in as his "coach", since Angle was Brock's greatest opponent. Right now the rematch doesn't make sense. Why is Cena getting it when he just got destroyed. If he faces him again and puts up a fight it wouldn't make sense. Not after getting beaten that bad.

UNLESS, he had insight on all of Brock's weaknesses from the one guy who faced him enough times to know them. i.e. Kurt Angle.

That's really the only way any of this makes sense to me.

The term independent doesn't mean smaller than he wwe...or not the wwe.

It's a US term for small regional companies. Companies with no exclusive contracts with talent. Companies that don't tour.

TNA is not an independent and to a degree neither is roh...and new japan and aaa certainly aren't,

So I was at the local auction today, just checking to see if there were any "gems" going "under the hammer" tomorrow, and I came across a box and these guys were inside.

http://oi57.tinypic.com/16likv4.jpg

The item description on the box says that everything inside it are bubble bath bottles, so I'm assuming these are bubble bath bottles too.

I checked them out and Hulk Hogan is still full of the stuff, whereas Ultimate Warrior was lighter, so I'm assuming his stuff has been used.

Does anyone know if they're rare at all? I would buy them, but they come with the rest of the box, which contains random bubble bath bottles, such as Simba, Goofy, Dennis The Menace (UK), Bart Simpson and so on, and they're expecting the box to go for £20/£30.

I have no idea who would spend that much on bubble bath bottles, unless some of them, like those Hogan and Warrior ones, were a bit rare and collectable.

TNA has received an offer from Discovery Network's VELOCITY channel. It's in 48 million homes and is in HD only.

The biggest issue is the rights fee, which is less than a quarter of what they are currently making at Spike. They'd have to find an additional revenue stream or the deal may not be viable. They are relieved that another suitor has materialized but are disappointed in the offer. They hope this opens the door to other prospective partners contacting them.

No he isn't. You can consider everything else indies if you want, but the rest of us in the real world will consider the Big Japanese and Mexican companies major promotions.

The term independent doesn't mean smaller than he wwe...or not the wwe.

It's a US term for small regional companies. Companies with no exclusive contracts with talent. Companies that don't tour.

TNA is not an independent and to a degree neither is roh...and new japan and aaa certainly aren't,

So Punk, Bryan, Cesaro, Devitt, Steen, etc. are all "indie" guys, but none of the promotions for which they worked are "indie" feds?

Fignuts
08-26-2014, 08:24 AM
Why do you keep listing Devitt as an "indie" guy when we keep telling you he isn't. The term is used for guys who spent the majority of their careers before WWE, touring the nation working for different regional indie companies.

Devitt has worked for NJPW for the majority of his career.

Those other guys are most famous for their runs in ROH, but they worked in tons of other small feds across the country as well. And even though ROH may tow the line between indie and major promotion now, they were still an indie promotion when a lot of those guys worked for them.

Hell many still have day jobs.

Dirtsheets:

In a trivia note from last night's WWE RAW in Anaheim, it was almost one year ago exactly that Triple H uttered the phrase "Best for Business" for the first time, at RAW in Anaheim.

F4Wonline.com has confirmed Monday's report about TNA being offered a spot on Discovery's VELOCITY network, which is available in only HD and less than 50 million homes. TNA moving to VELOCITY was described as a worst case scenario. If they take the deal, TNA would have to cut so far back on production and talent that the TNA as we know it would be no more.

There are several people within WWE who feel that as Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy sees more success, it becomes more likely that we won't see Batista return to WWE as a full-time performer ever again. When Batista left a few months ago, there was a belief that he would be back to continue his storyline once the media and appearances for Guardians was over but some are under the impression that it may not happen. Batista's future with the company was a hot topic backstage at this weekend's WWE live events. There's also the risk of Batista getting injured now that his film career will be taking off. It's almost guaranteed that Batista will receive a lot more offers for movies because of his role in a blockbuster hit like Guardians. Batista is no longer seen as a guy who acts in indie movies and studios will be hesitant to cast him in movies if he's performing in a wrestling ring

Ryback has deleted his tweet about going away for a while. For those that missed it, Ryback wrote the following during RAW last night: "Going away for a while to get some stuff fixed. Have not been myself for quite some time."

WWE Hall of Famer “Superstar” Billy Graham has sensationally revealed on his Facebook page that Doctors have told him his liver has two years left before it fails and he takes his "final bump", The former World Wide Wrestling Federation Champion between 1977–1978 blasted fellow Hall of Famer Abdullah the Butcher for giving him hepatitis C

After A.J. Lee's recent marriage to C.M. Punk, there was a lot of talk backstage about how this might affect her career in WWE. It's said that WWE Chairman Vince McMahon is a huge fan of the two-time Divas Champion and would hate to lose her from the roster. Most people backstage respect A.J. as a performer as well.

The general feeling before she got married to Punk was that A.J. would be the next Diva to have a good five-year reign as one the top faces of the Divas Division. But because of Punk's rocky relationship with WWE management right now, there is said to be some serious doubt about how long A.J. might end up sticking around.

There is some talk going around now that A.J. leaving the company within the next 18 months is a very real possibility.

Also, with those 2 and Austin's twice a week, and Cabana's a lot if the guests are popping up multiple times. This week for example, Austin did an interview with JR that I'm not that interested in because I know that Ross will be banging on about the same stuff he uses his own podcast for.

20 years ago today in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Shane Douglas defeats 2 Cold Scorpio in the finals of a one-night tournament to win the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. The story wasn't what went down with the match or the tournament (which featured the ECW debuts of Chris Benoit, Dean Malenko, and Osamu Nishimura). Post-match, Douglas, at the time the Eastern Championship Wrestling heavyweight champion, ran down the NWA and threw down its world title belt, and declared himself the ECW World Heavyweight Champion. NWA's Dennis Coraluzzo was in attendance at the show and was left in a state of confusion as ECW, which would change its name to Extreme Championship Wrestling in the days following the shocking actions, officially broke away from the NWA. In interviews since then, Paul Heyman admitted that he was one of only three men who knew what would go down that fateful day: himself, Douglas, and ECW commissioner Tod Gordon). In a side note, on the same show, Cactus Jack and Mikey Whipwreck defeated Public Enemy to win the ECW World Tag Team Championship.

There has been talk within WWE for about 6-8 weeks that John Cena is still having problems with his shoulder but is now having more problems with his neck. These are longterm nagging issues that Cena has been dealing with.
It was also said that there are a lot of people within WWE keeping an eye on Cena to see where he will be going forward in regards to acting and not wrestling as much.

There are also people within WWE who say Cena appears to be in pain and they believe Cena has has slowed down physically in the way he moves.

Cena never actually wrestling on Raw and maybe just competing in some quick, not so physically demanding dark matches after the show goes off the air for the crowd would be good for him all around.

Dirtsheets:

From Giantbomb's recent interview with Pat Patterson and overall SummerSlam coverage
..And I asked him what standouts he likes. "Oh, I like the guy who the does the..", and he starts doing motions in the air with his hands......is it Sami Zayn? "Sami Zayn! I love that guy! The stuff he does, it's amazing! Oh my God, he's the best!". And he said he goes to Vince, "Oh, I tell Vince, I tell all the guys and I say, oh the stuff he does and they all go, "Oh no, he just does a bunch of flippy shit".

The status of WWE's stable with Kofi Kingston, Big E and Xavier Woods has been a hot topic among fans this week. The group has been used at recent WWE live events and in dark matches, both as heels and babyfaces.

The members of the group have been told that they will still be used together in the future. WWE officials are trying to figure out how the group will be presented and how they want to move forward with it.

Regarding the network in Canada on Rogers, the reason there are so small archives is because this whole thing was rushed to launch because they have to show improved numbers over the next three months. They hadn’t gotten CRTC approval yet. Rogers is discussing offering the network to other cable systems covering the rest of the country.

At this stage, the working idea for Prince Devitt’s name is Fergal, which is his real first name. Given that WWE wants to own rights to people’s names and give them names they can’t take elsewhere if they leave, I’m guessing that name changes before he hits the main roster.

Solomon Crowe, the former Sami Callihan, has been turned from heel to face in NXT. He dropped the hacker gimmick which HHH hated. He’s now trying to emphasize wrestling skills.

New Japan is seriously looking into doing the 1/4 show at the Tokyo Dome as a regular PPV show in North America. If so, the working idea would be to use high-profile English language announcers.

Regarding the portrayal of Cena on Raw this week, that was all written and put together by Vince McMahon. McMahon felt that after the one-sided match (which they never should have done in hindsight, since the follow-up was so lame and it was rendered as if it might as well have never happened), that the Cena fans would lose faith in him unless he made an immediate statement.

Raw's original plans were supposed to be this according to the Observer:
The original plan for Monday's WWE RAW was for Big Show and Mark Henry to face Erick Rowan and Luke Harper, which was actually taped for SmackDown.

The plan was for Bray Wyatt to attack Big Show after the match and lay him out with Sister Abigail, as a way to show how dangerous Wyatt still is. The idea was to come out of RAW with momentum for Wyatt.

There were a number of other changes. The package with Lesnar and Heyman that they played was originally earmarked for the 9/1 show, not the 8/25 show.

Also, Rusev vs. Swagger was not on the original Raw script as the plan was to put Cesaro vs. Swagger for the U.S title shot, which Cesaro would win, with the same Dallas follow-up.

Reason for the Cena change and probably why Cena will never turn heel later got explained by the Observer.
With Bryan and Punk gone, Cena’s merchandise was recently and may still be outselling the entire rest of the roster combined. Heel turns kill merch sales, not to mention ticket sales to kids, which make up a strong percentage of the WWE audience and the Cena shows this year were doing more than $60,000 above the non-Cena shows in ticket sales (and shows without Cena are doing well below the usual levels for house shows in the cities they have been in while Cena shows have not). There is always the chance that Cena will get hotter as a ticket seller with a heel turn. Historically, with the exception of Hogan (whose merch sales were dead when he made the turn), modern era top babyface turns didn’t work unless you have the hotter babyface on the rise (like Austin was with Bret Hart when they did the double turn) ...

If Bryan, or Reigns, or someone, is at the point as champion where they are outdrawing Cena and selling at close to the same level, you could consider a turn, but even then, you still have the issues where Make-a-Wish and other corporate partners who bank on Cena as a spokesperson or face would get upset. But today, with no Punk, no Bryan, and Reigns months from being ready, any suggestion of turning him today is up there with the ill-fated Austin turn ...

When the new characters are at the point they are carrying the ball, and Reigns may already be on track getting there, you absolutely could consider a Cena turn from a wrestling standpoint. But perhaps Make-a-Wish changes the game and it won’t happen even when the storyline time down the line could be right.

So I'm watching Smackdown right now and am I the only one who thinks dropping Swagger's feud with Rusev for a feud with Bo Dallas was completely stupid? I mean they had a great thing going and then WWE just killed it all for a feud that won't lead anywhere. If the dirt sheets are to be believed (or Boleived) then Bo isn't getting a push from this and Swagger would benefit far more from a Rusev feud.

Lock Jaw
08-29-2014, 09:46 PM
I'm hoping it is just a little detour... continue to keep Rusev strong... keep Swagger away from him for a bit... then maybe Zeb returns and they kick it off again and Swagger finally gets his win.

#1-norm-fan
08-29-2014, 10:42 PM
I'm guessing the plan isn't for Swagger to be the one to beat Rusev. If that's the case, the feud had to end. Rusev has beaten him at two straight PPVs in ways that kept both guys looking strong. No need to keep the feud going so Rusev can just keep beating him.

I may be wrong, but I think it's possibly bad timing as opposed to bad booking on this one. Kind of in the same vein of Vinne Mac being exploded, then "some guy" died for real, so they dropped that shit short. Didn't they kick the angle off, and then all the shit went down in Ferguson, MO? If that's the case, I'd be willing to give them the benefit of the doubt for erring on the side of good taste/skipping potentially damning PR here. I'm just not sure how close the two things happened because I generally try to stay away from the news, so I could totally be wrong.

I'm not sure who the best female workers in the world are at the moment, but if the WWE signed two joshi to contracts -- one who is more cutesy and marketable and another who is more of your heel bruiser type -- they would be so beneficial to the division. Even if the heel girl ends up as a trainer in NXT, or working as a heel down there for your Becky Lynch/Alexa Bliss type to eventually overcome.

20 Most Popular Wrestlers Of 2014 (According To Google Metrics)

http://cdn3.whatculture.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/google-wwe.jpg

Google metrics can tell us a lot about WWE’s business. By deciphering which wrestlers are searched for most, you get a pretty good idea of who WWE’s most captivating characters are. If people are interested enough to google a wrestler, chances are they’re interested enough to tune into Raw to see them. WWE should be building their business around the following men and women as much as possible. It isn’t just about popularity, whether you’re loved or hated in WWE, as long as people are talking about you is all that matters.

The following list was originally included in the Wrestling Observer and reveals the key stars based on google data. The numbers compare 2014 with all of 2013, based on daily average (the first seven months of 2014 would therefore weigh evenly with the year 2013), with a percentage increase or decrease. The list originally included boxing and UFC stars, but for purposes of our pro wrestling focus, we’ll only list the WWE stars. One thing that can be said about the overall data, is that WWE has massively overtaken UFC in terms of interest. The Observer reports that “WWE, which was dueling evenly with UFC in 2010, is now far ahead, going from 72 percent ahead last year to 150 percent ahead this year.”

In fairness to the UFC, they’ve been terribly unlucky with major injuries and drug suspensions this year. The unpredictable nature of their industry has hurt their ability to present compelling narratives, in turn hurting people’s interest in the product.

The WWE will be very pleased with the following data. Key conclusions can be made on their most popular new star, the increased popularity of their divas, the biggest name amongst their legends and of course who really is the most popular current active superstar.

20. Brie Bella, 184.2% Increase From 2013

http://cdn3.whatculture.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/brie-bella-portrait.jpg

Brie Bella didn’t even rank on this list a year ago, which means her popularity shoots up 184.2%.

The reason for Brie being more interesting this year was down to several factors. She continues to be a major star on Total Divas, in addition to weekly appearances on Raw and Smackdown. She also got married to Daniel Bryan and started featuring alongside him in storylines. Her association with Bryan and the Yes Movement elevated her own popularity.

An even bigger factor in Brie’s google rise was her feud with Stephanie McMahon. A key WWE narrative for months on end, it made Brie a veritable main event act at SummerSlam. WWE did well to utilise Brie’s popularity in that angle, in addition to making her even more popular as a sympathetic babyface. All of this generated more google interest.

Plus, Brie’s hot. Pretty girls are and always will be a draw for pro wrestling fans. It isn’t surprising to see her getting googled regularly.

19. Ric Flair, 5.7% Increase From 2013

http://cdn3.whatculture.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/ric-flair-dancing.jpg

Nature Boy Ric Flair was ranked 28th on the overall boxing / UFC / WWE list last year and remains in 28th this year. He does however have a 5.7% increase in google activity, which will be down to his increased appearances over 2014. You also have to factor in things such as the WWE Network, which now allow for more exposure of WWE Legends. Plus, he’s the 16 time World Champion and one of the most loved wrestling characters ever. Appeal like that never goes away, Naitch is and alway will be someone we have interest in.

18. Big Show, -12.7% Decrease From 2013

http://cdn3.whatculture.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/big-show-brock-lesnar.jpg

Big Show is still in the top searched for wrestlers, but his overall interest is way, way down.

A 12.7% decrease in searches reflects his lack of activity this year. With the exception of being destroyed by Brock Lesnar at Royal Rumble and being tossed over the top rope by Cesaro at WrestleMania, Big Show has done almost nothing.

Contrast that to a year ago where he was regularly featured in high profile situations. He even started 2013 as Champion and finished it in main event title bouts against Randy Orton. Those storylines were loathsome, including a disastrous Survivor Series buyrate, but it did allow Big Show to stay a searched for subject.

This year the company just haven’t used the Giant as much, resulting in his decline on google.

17. Eva Marie, 127.3% Increase From 2013

http://cdn3.whatculture.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/eva-marie-sexy.jpg

A massive increase in popularity for the red headed diva. She did just about rank last year, but this year finds her much higher in google’s most popular superstars. Part of that will be down to her increased appearances on Raw and Smackdown, although the bulk of her popularity will be down to Total Divas. She’s a key character on the show, involved in some of this year’s most interesting storylines.

However, Eva Marie’s biggest appeal has to be her looks. People want to search for hot women, a lot of Eva Marie’s searches are no doubt for images!

16. Stephanie McMahon, 79.1% Increase From 2013

http://cdn3.whatculture.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/stephanie-raw.png

Stephanie McMahon has became far more of a tv presence in the last year. As the heel authority figure, she’s oftentimes delivered the promo of the night. This eventually resulted in a return to the ring, with Stephanie beating Brie Bella in a main event match at SummerSlam.

Given her weekly increase in tv time and delivery of astounding angles, Steph getting searched more isn’t surprising. More often than not she’s been a main character, key to the ‘Yes Movement’ storyline in the run up to WrestleMania 30.

Additionally, Stephanie remains a good looking woman. Fans are inevitably going to search for her just to trawl through google images.

15. Nikki Bella, 130.3% Increase From 2013

http://cdn3.whatculture.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/nikki-enter.jpg

Another woman who probably had male fans trawling through google images is Nikki Bella. It’s pretty remarkable that she’s so much higher than Brie, seeing as they both look the same and Brie’s probably had more screen time.

Still, what Nikki does have going for her is bigger boobs. Let’s face it, that’s probably made the difference. Nikki got her boob job back in 2012 and it instantly made her the hottest Bella. Call it superficial, but that’s the reality of it. Bigger boobed girls draw more interest in wrestling – hence why so many divas get boob jobs.

Nikki is also the girlfriend of John Cena. Fans have enjoyed (or suffered, depending on your point of view) the drama of John and Nikki’s relationship on Total Divas. It undoubtedly led to more Nikki Bella searches on google.

14. Roman Reigns, 394.1% Increase From 2013

http://cdn3.whatculture.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/roman-reigns-promo.jpg

The most substantial increase of WWE related google traffic is for Roman Reigns. He didn’t feature on last year’s list when part of The Shield, but this year he has been pushed strongly as a solo star, leading to a 394.1% rise in searches.

This data will be reassuring to WWE, acting as confirmation that they’ve pushed Reigns correctly. They’ve legitimately made him a top level star and fans clearly have a ton of interest in him. That bodes well for the next stage of Reigns’ push, which will culminate in him becoming WWE Champion at WrestleMania 31 we presume.

What could also be a factor in Reigns popularity is his broad appeal. The guys want to be him, and the girls want to be with him. He’s got quite the popularity with WWE’s female audience, so there’s probably some image searches going on which boosts his ranking.

13. Randy Orton, -12.0% Decrease From 2013

http://cdn3.whatculture.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/ORTON-MAD.png

Randy Orton’s decrease of 12% might be a worry to the star and the WWE.

The thing is, Orton has actually been far more featured in the first eight months of 2014 than he was in 2013. He had four months at the start of the year as WWE Champion. Even after losing the belt in the main event of WrestleMania, he still remained a heavily featured headliner in matches with Roman Reigns and The Shield.

It’s ironic then that searches for him have actually dropped. It looks like a case of familiarity breeds contempt. Newer stars like Reigns got pushed on TV and their google rank went up, but with an older star like Orton, his push has only subdued searches. The message to WWE is that we’ve seen enough and got bored of Orton.

12. Sting, 347.6% Increase From 2013

http://cdn3.whatculture.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/sting-wwe2k15.jpg

Sting has done very little in 2014, yet still ended up the twelfth most popular wrestler in the google metrics.

This can be attributed to his long-running WWE contract negotiations. He’s reportedly been close to signing with the company since WrestleMania 30, so people are obviously checking the internet daily in hope of developments.

The one thing that Sting did do this year is lend his name to WWE 2K15. When he appeared in the teaser trailer for the game, wrestling fans got very excited. That will have sent searches up and helped create a general interest in the Sting character.

Just a year ago, the WCW Icon was stranded in TNA. That helps explain why his increase is up so much, people just don’t care about the TNA brand. When you start mentioning Sting in relation to WWE though, suddenly he becomes a point of interest.

11. AJ Lee, 32.1% Increase From 2013

http://cdn3.whatculture.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/aj-lee-wwe-title.jpg

AJ Lee’s google metrics continue to increase. She spent most of 2014 as Diva’s Champion and is regularly in featured spots on TV and pay per views. Even when she did take some time off, from April to June, Lee still made headlines when she got married to CM Punk. Her relationship with the exiled wrestler has helped to boost AJ’s own profile, with people most likely searching out details of her private life with Punk.

You then also have her looks playing into it. She represents the alternative choice, a different kind of sexiness to Eva Maire or Nikki Bella. Many wrestling fans like that alternative appeal and the fact that AJ represents the one true wrestling diva in the company right now.

10. Stone Cold Steve Austin, 35.5% Increase From 2013

http://cdn3.whatculture.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/stone-cold-steve-austin-hulk-hogan.jpg

Proving the appeal of legends in WWE, Steve Austin is the first of eight wrestlers in the top ten who either don’t wrestle or only wrestle part time.

That should be a slightly worrying sign for WWE, it’s indicative of the company problem in creating new stars. Stone Cold Steve Austin hasn’t wrestled since 2003, yet eleven years later he’s still one of their most searched stars.

The increase in his searches this years should be attributed to his radio podcast and WrestleMania 30 appearance. The podcast in particular has been great for Austin’s profile, giving him weekly exposure to talk about whatever interests him. He’s had some brilliant interviews with current WWE stars on the show, which in turn has meant that Austin regularly made the headlines. Add to this the epic ‘holy trinity’ angle at the start of Mania 30 and you’ll see that 2014 has been Austin’s hottest year in some time.

9. Daniel Bryan, 109.6% Increase From 2013

http://cdn3.whatculture.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/daniel-bryan-wwe-raw.jpg

This year has been bittersweet for Daniel Bryan. It started with him getting snubbed at the Royal Rumble, which ironically propelled him into even stronger popularity. From there WWE gave him the push that everybody dreams of, the journey to WrestleMania 30′s title match, where he won the world heavyweight title to close the show.

Just a month later though and Bryan was having to take time off for a neck injury, which continues to keep him off television. It was a cruel twist of fate on a man who had only just hit his career peak. The Bryan era was over before it ever really got going.

The increase in searches will be due to his title push. He was the biggest active name in wrestling from January to April and was also starring on Total Divas. Even now, with Bryan out injured, fans will still be googling daily to get updates on his condition.

8. Triple H, -14.6% Decrease From 2013

http://cdn3.whatculture.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/Triple-h.jpg

Triple H remains one of WWE’s top ten searched for wrestlers, but he’s also 14.6% down on his popularity from last year. This decrease comes despite Hunter’s character being featured far more, with weekly appearances now pretty much a given. You might have thought that would’ve resulted in more Triple H searches, but obviously not. Maybe that suggests an apathy to The Game’s heel Authority figure act.

Still, he remains one of WWE’s most famous acts of the last decade. That level of historic appeal, combined with his current actions, ensures he’ll remain one of the most googled WWE names.

You also need to account in Hunter’s increased work as a WWE corporate executive. Whether it is an on-screen or off-screen story, there’s usually some Hunter related news bouncing around the internet these days.

7. Brock Lesnar, 58.0% Increase From 2013

http://cdn3.whatculture.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/brock-lesnar-wwe-champ.jpg

Brock Lesnar’s increase in searches is undoubtedly down to his conquering of the streak. When he pinned The Undertaker at WrestleMania 30, ending the 21 year streak, none of us could quite believe it. Right away the internet exploded with searches to try and make sense of what had happened. The name Brock Lesnar was on all of our minds.

Lesnar has continued this momentum by going on to challenge for the WWE Title at SummerSlam, so a rise of 58% on last year’s google metrics isn’t surprising. He didn’t really do much of note last year, just an average feud with Triple H and one great match against CM Punk. This year has been the opposite, with the streak victory being the biggest result of the century.

You’re always going to have Lesnar as one of the top searched names on this list. It isn’t just that he’s got WWE appeal, he’s also a UFC legend and somewhat of a mainstream profile. Lots of people will be searching him out.

6. Batista, 85.1% Increase From 2013

http://cdn3.whatculture.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/batista-guar.jpg

Dave Batista was one of WWE’s biggest stars from 2005 to 2010. That stardom has endured, even last year when he wasn’t with WWE, he was still featured 29th on this list (which also incorporated the boxing and UFC stars). That’s exactly why WWE brought him back in January of this year, his continued name value and fame were seen as a boost for the WWE brand.

It didn’t quite work out that way. Batista was quickly criticised by the fans, who bemoaned his undeserved victory in January’s Royal Rumble. Still, fans may not have been talking about him in a good way, but they were at least talking about him. His eventual heel turn and main event run to WrestleMania 30 ensured his google searches went up.

Then came Guardians Of The Galaxy. Batista left WWE in June to promote his role in the blockbuster film, which will account for even more searches of his name.

He’s now both a credibile mainstream star as well as a WWE superstar. That should keep him near the top of WWE related searches for some time to come.

5. Hulk Hogan, 69.0% Increase From 2013

http://cdn3.whatculture.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/hulk-hogan-uk-return.jpg

Can you believe that Hulk Hogan was on TNA television this time last year? It seems a lifetime ago!

As a WWE superstar, The Hulkster has witnessed his google searches going up 69%. That speaks measures of the difference in perception between TNA and WWE. When Hogan was with TNA, less people cared. Now that he’s back with the McMahon empire, fans care again, his name is far more googled.

Hogan’s biggest role since returning to WWE was hosting WrestleMania 30. There’s also been Raw appearances and the usual media rounds, all of which made Hogan way more interesting this year compared to 2013.

4. The Undertaker, 56.3% Increase From 2013

http://cdn3.whatculture.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/the-undertaker-21-1.jpg

The Undertaker’s increased searches are definitely down to his streak loss at WrestleMania 30. It wasn’t just a big wrestling story, it actually morphed into a mainstream media story. Even the BBC news covered the fact that Undertaker had lost for the first time ever at wrestling’s biggest showcase. Everyone was looking up ‘The Undertaker’ to get the gossip over what went down.

It isn’t just controversy that makes Undertaker a search term though, it’s also the fact that he’s one of the most iconic performers ever. Fans are constantly looking him up, trying to figure out when he’ll next return or discussing his greatest moments. His legend will endure for many years to come.

3. CM Punk, 96.2% Increase From 2013

http://cdn3.whatculture.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/2014-cm-punk.jpg

The man who internet fans simply can’t get enough. The name ‘CM Punk’ has became a google and social media sensation in 2014, shooting up 96.2% in google metrics.

The reason? It has all been down to the mystery around his January exit. Punk quit the WWE, with neither side offering any comment on their dispute. That instantly sent google into overdrive, as fans immediately started googling Punk’s name in hope of getting answers on the matter.

Even now, the mystery endures, so a mere mention of Punk’s name still gets the internet wrestling community excited. That continues to send the google metrics up and up. The rule should be ‘out of sight, out of mind’, but it has ended up being absence makes the interest grow stronger!

The Wrestling Observer reports that Punk’s google numbers blow away anything he ever did when actually on television, and Punk interest even surpassed John Cena during mid July when the Money In The Bank PPV emanated from Chicago.

Whether Punk and WWE like it or not, this story (or should that be non-story?) looks set to roll and roll.

2. John Cena, -3.3% Decrease From 2013

http://cdn3.whatculture.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/john-cena-15-time-world-champion.jpg

John Cena’s google popularity dips slightly, but neither he or WWE will be worried.

The 3.3% drop can be explained by his lack of a WrestleMania main event this year. Last time around he was in one of the biggest matches of all time, Rock Vs Cena 2. That alone probably accounted for his extra searches last year.

Regardless, John is still WWE’s most googled full time wrestler. Whether it’s fans loving him or fans hating him, everyone wants to talk about him. He remains popular mostly because WWE push him hard, including making him champion in June at Money In The Bank. However, his searches also stem from the fact that he’s a legend in his own right now. Whether he was pushed or not, he’d easily be in the top ten. He’s so embedded in the WWE franchise that they’re almost one of the same.

Additionally, Cena has mainstream appeal. He’s a celebrity in a way that Daniel Bryan could never achieve. This level of interest is always going to keep him firmly entrenched at the top of WWE.

1. The Rock, -2.0% Decrease From 2013

http://cdn3.whatculture.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/hercules-dwayne-the-rock-johnson.jpg

Just like his WrestleMania 29 opponent, The Rock finds a slight dip in popularity. Again, we’d attribute it to not featuring in WWE’s WrestleMania main event. Instead, the only WWE involvement we’ve seen from The Rock this year, was his surprise appearance alongside Hulk Hogan and Steve Austin during Mania 30′s opening segment.

However, The Rock is still WWE’s most googled name. Only Floyd Mayweather can claim to have more searches in the overall UFC / WWE / Boxing google metrics.

Still, what we must consider, is that The Rock also has a string of blockbuster movies that will also be rocketing his brand up the popularity scale. People will be searching him out based more on his performance in Hercules than any real WWE connotations. So really, you could argue that John Cena should be considered WWE’s biggest name on google.

In conclusion, what we can say about google’s WWE metrics, is that the company needs to create new stars. Cena has been around forever and other names in the top ten are at best part-timers. Daniel Bryan has made a dent, but even if he had stayed fit, he probably had reached his plateau.

The signs are encouraging for Roman Reigns who is 394.1% up on last year. He has to be WWE’s one big hope for a bold new vision in 2015.

I actually agree with this to a huge extent. Good observation.

– WWE NXT Diva Sasha Banks recently debuted a new theme song. The song is titled “Sky’s The Limit” and is done by the band CFO$. You can download is now via iTunes.

I haven't heard any of this song, but I'm going to go ahead and throw out a few guesses. 1) Bad EDM/Dubstep beats. 2) Downgrade from last theme. 3) It's a 30 second loop.

Can anyone braver than I am confirm?
