Roman is easily one of the best wrestlers WWE has had in the main event. His offense is AWESOME and his selling is quality, not that he's HBK or something but for his character he sells very well. It sucks he gets treated the way he does, but it is what it is. He's a great wrestler.

I concur with Fragile X. The Big Dog is a solid worker and worthy of the "locker room leader" moniker. The lad has had some bad luck with respect to his rise to main event status coinciding with the WWE Universe's innate desire to see Daniel Bryan back in the main event picture and possibly with the Heavyweight title around his waist. You can't necessarily blame them since we never got a proper title "reign".

The biggest problem with Roman is and pretty nearly always was WWE booking. Well, except at the very beginning... he was kinda terrible, so it was about 50/50. However, that burden of blame has leveled towards the company over time. Not going to guess a split number, but if they were on a seesaw as a scale, Reigns is very clearly dangling his feet in the air while Vince & co have their asses firmly planted on the ground.

So thirsty to manufacture the next beloved box office draw; to try to create from whole cloth a carbon copy of The Rock, that they essentially forgot *how* to build a wrestler. Most of his own shortcomings, he was able to get through with time, effort, and practice. But trying to hotshot, shoehorn, and force-feed him to the masses, and not even once take the simplest path (turn him heel, let the heel turn run its course, and turn him babyface when the crowd is ready for that redemption story) was an absolute gimmie card that the company just simply left on the table. I constantly maintain that if they just bit the bullet and turned him heel at the beginning instead of dumping all this external marketing/endorsement attention at him and hoping he gets over by osmosis, they would have been able to reap the benefits of having him come full circle and be beloved organically by now.

All they had to do was *admit* he was the hand-picked, corporate champion with "the look" and a rocket up his ass. Even the horribly failed Jinder run could have had potential salvagability to it if they took the training wheels off. And by training wheels, I mean the Singh Brothers. You have a paper champion with nothing but tainted wins, and nobody is going to buy the guy as "the man". While true that heels cheat, they shouldn't *need* to cheat ALL the time in much the same way as the champion shouldn't constantly lose non-title matches. Contrary to what they always say, wins and losses actually do matter. Maybe not in a numerical context like in actual sports, but it can have a bearing on someone's career. Like the "one more match" shtick from Christian would have gotten over better if he weren't the heel of the equation. Or if, say, a guy who's supposed to be a babyface always ends up counting lights. After awhile, who wants to cheer for that loser?

The wrinkle with Daniel Bryan "getting over by losses" was the fact that the crowd knew he was getting screwed both kayfabe and for real. They wouldn't extend that type of logic to turning Roman heel, since it was a pretty poorly kept secret that he was being groomed to be the next top guy. Be it to "swerve" the IWC or out of spite or whatever, they sabotaged their own business to be supposedly smarter than the smarks. Big deal. Now that ship has sailed, and you've firmly cemented the guy as Cena-lite; the guy who's only there so little kids buy action figures, and they even had to go so far as to re-form The Shield temporarily for some damage control.

So, even with the unforeseen setbacks of emergency surgery, injury, mystery sickness, and wellness policy violations, the bigger botch on his career trajectory continues to be how he is handled as a talent.

Poor Samir. I don't really care about the Singh Brothers but it sucks to see anyone get injured, especially with something that usually keeps you out for close to a year like a torn ACL.

Yeah. Apparently when she posts picks that shoe skin and stuff it's because she thinks the lighting is perfect and she sees the slightest imperfections in herself.

Very unfortunate seeing as I'd pay money to eat off of her abs.

She should champion the cause about self-image issues. Kinda like with Sasha and her hairline or AJ Lee and her mental imbalances. And I know by my wording that I seem like I'm making jokes of this, but I'm not. It prob'ly would do good to confront that demon in more ways than just us nerds drooling over her midriff whenever she is comfortable enough to bare it.

Tye Dillinger has entered the Royal Rumble

I actually hope they don't make him #10 again.

Send out some random heel or Curt Hawkins at #10 and then have Dillinger enter at #11 and throw him out for taking "his number".

Or have him enter the Women's rumble at #10 in a wig.

Just watched Bret Hart vs. 1-2-3 Kid from Raw sometime in 1994. I don't know if I've ever seen this match, sadly. Sean Waltman was so good. I'm officially a Bret fan now. When I had 15-year-old boy syndrome, I don't think I got him, but his faces when he calmly kicks out of near falls in that match are brilliant. Love JR on the call. Great story. Kid got great shine at the start, Bret made him look amazing. The restarting of the match because Bret is a such a babyface and it kicking up gear, with Kid going to the well with moves that have already worked too many times. Great finish -- both guys looked great.

Sometimes I love wrestling.

Just going through the SummerSlam Ladder Matches to see which is my favorite today. HBK vs. Razor was so good. Michaels looks good in blue. Weird that he never really used it more during any of his singles stints. HBK seemed to have trouble getting the belt down and has that hissy fit at the end. Classic Michaels.

Now onto HHH vs. Rock from 1998. It's crazy how much more charismatic than HHH Rock is. I forgot about the yellow ladder, haha. I wish the WWE still had colored ladders. As a kid, I loved little details like that. I also used to love how Ladder Matches would start off as a match and then break into using the ladders for spots, etc.

The current US Title design is coming up on 15 years. I think that has to be the longest continuous run for a WWF/E title belt in history? Maybe you can count the versions of the WWF Tag Team Titles that didn't really change until 2002.

The current US Title design is coming up on 15 years. I think that has to be the longest continuous run for a WWF/E title belt in history? Maybe you can count the versions of the WWF Tag Team Titles that didn't really change until 2002.

I wish they updated the design. Make it look as regal as the United Kingdom Championship. No pun intended.

Found a really interesting tidbit from this week's Observer Newsletter. It involved the history of RAW as part of Meltzer's report on RAW 25th anniversary show.

Apparently the reason RAW went to 2 hours was due to USA Network having no confidence it could compete as an hour show against Nitro especially during its taped era. The reason RAW has an over-run was simply to give the show extra help at beating Nitro.

RAW itself was also originally planned to be canceled in 1998 but USA Network changed their minds because of the huge success of Stone Cold Steve Austin.

After losing in the ratings for several straight months to Nitro, the USA Network, to counter, expanded Raw to two hours and also gave them the overrun which has remained part of the show to this day. Until recent years, the overrun was a great television idea because the wrestling audience would stay past 11 p.m., since the main event was usually in progress, keeping viewers tuned to the network, plus people tuning in for the 11 p.m. show would see the end of Raw with its final match and angle, potentially creating new fans. The overrun until recent years was always, for those reasons, the most-watched part of the show. But now, with the three hour show and viewers tuning out in the third hour, while some of those reasons still exist, it also adds to the length of a show that is already too long.

Raw moved to two hours in February, 1997. In 1998, the decision was made by Barry Diller to cancel Monday Night Raw and Tuesday Night Fights, a boxing show.

But suddenly, WWF caught fire with Steve Austin off the Mike Tyson and Vince McMahon angles, and ratings skyrocketed, not only saving the show, but making it the hottest show on cable television.

Another interesting tidbit about RAW from this week's Newsletter involved Vince unwittingly playing a huge role in UFC's spike in popularity.

It both doomed RAW's future on Spike TV and WWE getting screwed with their talks with USA Network.

Ratings fell during this period. Perhaps the most monumental thing came in late 2004. Spike toyed with the idea of putting on a show called The Ultimate Fighter at 11:05 p.m. Monday nights, after Raw. The show was a last-ditch effort by Lorenzo Fertitta. UFC, with no television and no station wanting to risk the idea of live fights, was losing money and Fertitta was considering folding the company, or selling it. In fact, at one point, it was up for sale but when Dana White was only able to get a low number for it, Fertitta decided to keep it alive and take a risk on essentially putting together a reality show and buying time on Spike, which showed interest in the idea ...

Spike went to Vince McMahon, because the feeling was that UFC was close enough to pro wrestling that it could be seen as a rival promotion. McMahon okayed Ultimate Fighter airing after Raw, and Ultimate Fighter maintained a huge percentage of Raw’s 18-34 demos and the show became an immediate hit.

In 2005, with McMahon trying to get a better deal by negotiating Spike and USA, which wanted the show back, against each other, Spike was having so much success with UFC that they publicly announced they were canceling Raw.

This gave WWE very little leverage and while USA paid WWF the $28 million that Spike was paying them, USA no longer allowed WWF to sell the advertising time like they had on Raw since its inception. So the attempt to play the two off backfired when McMahon needed USA and they knew it and he got a far worse deal.

I was listening to Busted Open at work this morning and they're asking for what the outcome of the Rumble will be. Seems way too obvious it'll be a SD guy since Roman can't win in Philly but he has to be #1 contender vs Brock so he wins a #1 contender chamber match created to fill the void by Miz demanding to be traded so he doesn't face Brock. Miz and Bryans history would make it hard for me to think Mix would just get his wish to be traded back to SD so there's gotta be something to happen for him to get the shot. In lieu of him wrestling Bobby Roode at Fast lane I can only see it being Miz vs Bryan for the title shot. Which he loses since history of Rumble winners putting their shot on the line isn't good

Then what happens?
I'd say Daniel Bryan wins so he gets another title match at WM. Bryan vs Styles would probably break the internet.

What would you like to bet?
I don't see any other logical choice for a winner that isn't blatantly obvious. Miz winning would be shocking I think because it would seem to set up Brock vs Miz but that match can't happen so you still get Roman vs Brock.

How do you mean? it isn't resurfacing in the news I believe.

The Daily Beast recently wrote an article revealing some details about why he never got charged. Deadspin's David Bixenspan‏ brought some public attention to this report on Twitter.

In a way it sort of undermines Vince's "purity" requirements for XFL players since as the league's only owner, he has his own shady and questionable past. Also wouldn't be surprised if Deadspin is working on their own report about the salon incident and Vince's history with sexual harassment allegations.

So they JUST now announced Reigns is in the rumble instead of promoting it on TV leading up to the show?

I always figured they'd just have a SD guy win it since they usually have the secondary title guy win for "shock value" anyway. But the fact that they went out of their way to downplay Reigns even being in the match makes me wonder...

That's pretty much what I do for any non-televised show I go to. Even if it's a good match I'll at least try to get myself into a favorable spot to get out of there quickly.

Like when I saw a Cody/Rey main event in a baseball stadium last summer. Once I sensed the match was winding down I got up and stood right near the corridor. The second the match ended, I made a beeline for the exit. Since Cody went over I also figured it'd buy me a few extra minutes since Rey was bound to get some heat back post-match to "send the crowd home happy".

Last year had Joey Janella Vs. Daniel Bryan has introduced a new "Top 10" concept for SmackDown. The gimmick is that it will be voted on by the talent. There's interest to be mined there, don't get me wrong -- it could definitely help the perception of certain talent. That being said, so could good booking. The question will be whether or not this lasts longer than TNA's ranking systems, or their TV Title being defended every week.

Mr. Nerfect
01-30-2018, 02:29 PM
Sheamus & Cesaro have named the Raw Tag Team Titles "Larry & Peaches." Because apparently them already having a name...you know, being "titles" isn't inherent enough.

Evil Vito
01-30-2018, 02:39 PM
Sheamus' recent matches have been kinda hard to watch knowing that he's now got spinal stenosis. They're clearly trying to protect him and avoid him taking too many back bumps, but I think he's pretty clearly working on borrowed time at this point.

A shame(ful thing) really. I haven't always been his biggest fan but he can definitely go in the ring and still looks to be in great shape physically at 40. I think he'd have quite a bit more in the tank if not for the stenosis.

Mr. Nerfect
01-30-2018, 02:43 PM
It's a shame when people don't get to end things on their own terms, but sometimes you've got to make that call and move into other things. I'm sure he could be a corner-man or even an announcer (I should probably regret saying that). But he's done movies and such before too. He could be more valuable outside the ring than in it.

Mr. Nerfect
01-30-2018, 02:45 PM
Cesaro could make things work with a different partner. I've enjoyed all his teams. I'm sure there is someone in NXT that could use a call up, or someone who could use a fresh coat of paint. Or you can just use Cesaro in the IC Title scene. He'd make a great wrestling heel in that position.

Evil Vito
01-30-2018, 02:49 PM
Yeah I'd agree with that. I could see him moving to production or an ambassador type role, too. There will be stuff for him to do and he's probably going to be a lifer with the company.

I'm gonna guess that Sheamus will hang on for one more Mania. I imagine he and Cesaro dropping the belts there or maybe the night after to a debuting team (AOP?) and after that Sheamus ends his in-ring career while Cesaro goes for a solo run on SmackDown.

Mr. Nerfect
01-30-2018, 02:50 PM
Guys have worked with spinal stenosis for years. He might be pushing through.

Evil Vito
01-30-2018, 02:56 PM
He's already been working with it for over six months. Doesn't mean he can't keep going for a bit but I think WWE are more conscientious about injuries now than they were even a few years ago. You can already see it in his recent matches that they're trying to protect him.

Mr. Nerfect
01-30-2018, 02:58 PM

I'm not even sure Ohno himself wants to go on the main roster, tbh. From the sounds of things he's basically an extra trainer/mentor figure for the younger people in NXT and can help teach them different styles of wrestling.

He's got job security in a role like that. On the main roster I'd expect he'd be cut fairly quickly.

I was going to suggest Ohno, and have them do The Kings, but I’m not sure they have a place/want to find a place for him on the main roster.

Ohno today is very different from Chris Hero back then. The dynamic wouldn't feel the same. A name that keeps popping into my head is Dolph Ziggler. He's never really been in a tag team ever, unless you count The Spirit Squad. A part of me thinks he might be poison, but some guys are just better in a team, and Dolph might be one of those guys and no one has really put it all together.

Mr. Nerfect
01-30-2018, 06:15 PM
Another guy, and people might hate this, because they don't like the guy, is Mojo Rawley. Working with Cesaro might help him get better in the ring, and being with Mojo might mean that Cesaro gets pushed. In that mode, Cesaro and Elias could also be beneficial to both. I'm pretty sure Jinder Mahal is a lost cause in terms of getting better, but they're obviously going to keep him around, so there's that. Curt Hawkins popped into my head because it would be a "funny" team where Cesaro does all the work and wins all their matches for them. Ha-ha, right?

Cesaro and Samoa Joe as a team of destroyers would be ideal, but it seems kind of limiting for Joe, sadly.

Anybody Thrilla
01-30-2018, 06:19 PM

Mr. Nerfect
01-30-2018, 06:20 PM

Evil Vito
01-30-2018, 07:01 PM
Cesaro's contract was set to expire at the end of 2016, he was pretty vocally upset with how he was being used, and his work with Sheamus intrigued him enough to get him to re-up.

I think keeping him in a team is the way to go, as much as I love him as a solo guy.

Mr. Nerfect
01-30-2018, 07:03 PM
He's one guy I'd love to see in New Japan, should they ever do a talent exchange for some reason. Just a few tours there to be the wrestling machine. Would help refresh the fans' perspective on him a bit.

Suzuki-gun as a heel faction running wild in NXT is a wet dream of mine. Even if it was just a version like Suzuki, Smith, Archer, ZSJ, Michinoku and Kanemaru. Suzuki as NXT Champion, Smith & Archer as Tag Champs, Kanemaru as Cruiserweight Champ and ZSJ as UK Champ. Michinoku is there because "Hey! It's Taka Michinoku!" NXT Championship goes from Almas to Black at WrestleMania, to Suzuki, to Gargano.

Why didn't she get herself booked for the Royal Rumble? In kayfabe? That would be her best way of getting to Mania, surely? And why did she have an entrance all cued up when Stephanie McMahon had no clue she worked for the company?

WWE is so dumb sometimes.

Fignuts

Maybe in kayfabe she feels shes not quite ready and wants to train more to make the transition, but she wanted the womens division know shes coming for them at mania?

As for your second question, the answer is "because wrestling".

How did Triple H not know sting was coming despite having a new entrance theme and titantron prepared.

If Vince is the boss, why doesn't he just not book austin and let his contract run out, if he hates him so much.

Just wrestling things.

I hate that lack of logic. You can get away with it when it's hot (Austin vs. McMahon started off logical until Russo got more power), but it's something that sucks the wind out when you're watching as a fan and it doesn't make sense.

I don't know, I just think its low hanging fruit as surpise appearances have been a part of wrestling forever and have never made much sense when held under microscope.

Not saying the segment was perfect. Rhonda's stiff as a board pointing was awkward to say the least, but she'll get coaching on that kind of stuff.

Jinder at least made some kind of sense from a marketing standpoint. Not saying I agree with it, but I at least understood what they were going for.

You would have a much tougher time making me get behind say, Curtis Axel. What demographic would he appeal to as champion.

For the record, I think Jinder would have been great as an old territories champion, which is why I didnt completely scoff at him and gave him a chance, but as wwe champion in the current era, he never completely won me over.

Screw demographics, Curtis Axel for Universal Champion.

Mr. Nerfect
01-31-2018, 08:44 PM
Jinder is, in my opinion, way too awful to ever be believable as a champion in any era. He just doesn't know how to make his shit look good, and he's been doing this for like 15 years now. It makes sense from a marketing perspective if you don't mind telling a market that you think they are stupid or don't have taste. An absolutely awful decision, and you could tell it was awful before they did it -- because no one has ever cared about Jinder Mahal.

At least two people care about Curtis Axel. And he's better in the ring. There have been moments in his career where he has not been a complete jobber too. Axel wins the IC title from Miz, defends it against Bray Wyatt and other people they are done with, then Axelmania runs wild at the Royal Rumble in Phoenix. Like a firebird, Axel's career has resurrected and risen to new heights. Brock is his friend and would drop the belt to him. Heyman would sell him. He could be IC Champion for over a year, theoretically, by this point. I'd take it over Jinder, that's all I'm saying. Axel would be more over with India.

Mr. Nerfect
01-31-2018, 08:45 PM
And drop the name Curtis Axel. Have him decide he is ready to embrace his family name. Joe Hennig as IC Champion, 2019 Royal Rumble Winner and Universal Champion. Yeah, that's the meal ticket.

I thought he was done after RybAxel. They teased him in NXT and that's when Axelmania got ironically over. Now he's doing The Miz stuff and has a vague purpose. I think he's got one life left when this run ends. And it's been a pretty good career for him -- 8 years on the main roster thus far.

Mr. Nerfect
01-31-2018, 09:36 PM
Did some research into Axel's developmental career. Harmless trivia, really. But it reminded me that Brett DiBiase was in the business for a while. He retired because of knee problems and then became a referee before being released and then doing more wrestling and disappearing. Mike DiBiase was also a wrestler, but retired in 2008 and got into a shoot-out with police in 2014. Ted DiBiase, Jr. got further, but also left the business before long. Weird how those kids turned out.

I have never understood the hype for axel. He comes off generic in every aspect to me, and the only time he was over was when he dressed up like the biggest star in the history of thd business. Which isn't really getting over as much as it is riding the coat tails of someone elses legacy.

Mr. Nerfect
01-31-2018, 10:02 PM
I don't know if there's ever really been any hype for him. I think he's always just been regarded as a solid, if unspectacular hand.

He's shown flashes of greatness here and there like his run in NXT and teaming up with Ryback but WWE never bothered to put any real effort in him. Had a high profile IC title match one time against Triple H that didn't help him at all because of all the focus during and after the match was on Triple H.

Supposedly Axel's biggest benefit is him being really great as a trainer and WWE's top choice to workout with part-timers. Not sure if he works with Lesnar but he helped Goldberg and either The Rock or Batista for their returns. Might have also been Taker's WWE trainer in recent years.

Rookies from NXT Season One employed:
Daniel Bryan
David Otunga

Rookies from NXT Season Two employed:
Bray Wyatt
Curtis Axel
Percy Watson
Titus O'Neil

Rookies from NXT Season Three employed:
Naomi

Rookies from NXT Season Four employed:

EC3
Fandango

All things considered I'm shocked there are still this many around - although if you wanted to you could cross out Percy Watson and EC3 since they were both gone for ages.

Wonder who will stick around longest. Naomi is the youngest having only turned 30 in November, but I have to think eventually she'll leave the business once she and Jimmy Uso decide to start a family.

Bray's the second youngest, turns 31 in a few months. Probably a safe bet to be the last one actively competing in WWE of the group - even if they do absolutely nothing with his character they always like to keep around a token weirdo.

Axel and Titus are two guys I never thought would last this long but I think both have a good chance at landing jobs post in-ring career. Axel as a trainer and Titus as either a manager or ambassador.

That's a pretty neat thing to be able to claim.
