Lol, isn’t this going to be the same week AEW does Kenny Omega vs. Jungle Boy? So there’s going to be a lot of “top this” for the wannabe heel champion with the wannabe top manager and a way, way, greener underneath babyface.
Sounds like Bray Wyatt might be in Drew's orbit soon

Watching some of the old Nitro-era WCW stuff I’d forgotten about. It’s crazy how fresh eyes change things. I’ve always been a fan of William Regal, but his ring work as Lord Steven was just so many notches above his WWF/E work for quite a long time there. Regal would eventually get his feet warm, but for a while it didn’t feel like he meshed well in the E.

For some reason just fell in a YouTube hole watching clips of Rusev/Lana Russian gimmick... was so golden. (And the Russian national anthem is a sweet anthem)
They really missed out on giving Swagger the push over him... would have been better than his first loss going to John Cena.

Activision has won its character copyright infringement lawsuit against WWE Hall of Famer Booker T. Huffman.
The professional wrestler was claiming that Call of Duty character David 'Prophet' Wilkes was modelled after G.I. Bro, a character he created and portrayed at the beginning of his career.
However, the jury said that Activision didn't infringe Huffman's copyright.
The lawsuit was focusing on a poster showing G.I. Bro holding a firearm, which Huffman said Activision infringed when creating character art for Prophet (see images below)
https://cdn.gamer-network.net/2021/articles/2021-06-28-10-18/GI_Bro_v_Prophet_copy.jpeg/EG11/resize/646x-1/quality/80/format/jpg
The G.I. Bro poster (left) that Huffman claimed inspired Call of Duty character Prophet (right)
Activision had argued that Huffman did not present sufficient evidence to support his claim, adding that he did "not own the idea of an angry man with scowling look," as the wrestler was claiming that G.I. Bro's facial expression and attitude were unique.
The studio also added that the G.I. Bro poster was not copyrightable because it was modelled after Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson from the neck down.
Huffman filed the lawsuit in 2019. At the time, his lawyer, Micah Dortch, said that there was "no question [Prophet] was copied from G.I. Bro. From the hair, body type and clothing, right down to facial expressions, the similarities are too profound to be an accident."

Lol Sasha Banks has outed herself as an antivaxxer
Apparently that is not necessarily true.... she just shared something from an anti-vax Instagram account about thinking for yourself..... but she doesn't follow the account and could just be ignorant to its meaning and just thought it was something about being unique or whatever.....
So, coming back to this.
https://i.redd.it/wz79fp7it2871.jpg
Yeah....definitely more to it than just "thinking for yourself"
That said it's not exactly surprising that a wrestler who has a reputation for landing on her head every match and works in an industry based on lies and illusions can come to develop these views.

I think loads of wrestlers still believe UFC is a work. If memory serves, Gorilla Monsoon thought the NFL was a work.
Working in an industry that in and of itself is a work, combined with head injuries and the general air of libertarianism around wrestling, particularly at the higher levels.....definitely a recipe for bullshit there to start thinking the world around you is a work. Probably way more Drake Wuertz' in the business than anyone would like to admit, most just aren't outspoken about it.

I just worked out there is some classic WCW Australia stuff on YouTube. I thought at least Gerty might want to know. There appears to be some full episodes and some isolated matches.
For those who don’t know, WCW was the Australian territory that ran in the 60’s and 70’s under Jim Barnett. When it folded, Barnett would take the World Championship Wrestling name to Georgia Championship Wrestling, which would later expand into what most wrestling fans know as WCW now.
They used top American talent. Eventually they’d join the NWA, but they had their own World Title first — the International Wrestling Alliance World Heavyweight Championship — which was held by Killer Kowalski, Gorilla Monsoon, Ray Stevens, Bearcat Wright, Toru Tanaka and King Curtis Iaukea, among others. Most of the video seems to be from the period they recognized the NWA World Champion, with Jack Brisco getting mentioned a lot. Don’t know if the match is on YouTube, but they aired a Jack Brisco vs. Dory Funk, Jr. match on the TV show.

People cutting the chord between Saturday and Monday? Those ratings are from this week.
It’s true that people consume media in different ways. It’s true that people are cutting cable. A lot of that is because there isn’t much that holds their attention on there that they can’t get somewhere else, and they can no longer justify the price. And a lot of it is because the wrestling is too long and not good enough.

Aren't MLW notoriously cheap
There are reports of them paying some guys wonky. Which is never good, don’t get me wrong, but I think the issues all got resolved. They’re basically a grassroots project, so I think what they really need is some network backing to lock some guys into proper deals and make sure they don’t have those issues. With MLW, I feel there’s this very clear barrier they need to cross in terms of getting star power to get the revenue in.
I think the money would need to come from somewhere externally, since MLW don’t really have it themselves. They’ve got partnerships with DAZN, BeIn and Vice, so hopefully between the three, something can crop up there.
It’s better that than doing crazy shit for attention from the people who would follow anyway if it were good and had genuine stars they knew how to follow.
I’d be having convos with Bryan Danielson, Brock Lesnar, Adam Scherr, Tommy End and even guys like Johnny Curtis and Tyler Freeze. It’d be great if they could get CM Punk in to do commentary, but he might upstage the show. Still, you get him to call a few shows before doing a program with Tom Lawlor or something. Sign Mickie James, Tessa Blanchard, Ivelisse (if she can play nice), Marina Shafir, Kiera Hogan and Santana Garrett for a Women’s Division.
Between all that, if you can get the funds for it together, you’ve got something that might feel a bit like pro-wrestling that could half-way get attention between its platforms.
I dunno. Maybe I’m hoping beyond hope.
Mr. Nerfect

It’s between them and Ring of Honor to get serious, in my opinion. I just read an article with a quote from Joe Koff who elaborated on something I’ve heard Cornette talk about: Although it’s not in the weekly Nielsen ratings because it’s broken up though syndication, no one talks about how many people watch Ring of Honor.
In March of this year, Koff was reporting 300k-400k, maybe 500k people for ROH. If Sinclair broke big, went for some names, they could easily nudge that number up. I also don’t see the harm in doing a cable show, using that promote your syndicated content, and using the TV rights from cable to offset your production costs.
Maybe Corgan will find some money and luck? Fuck.

I can't imagine MLW is making "game changing" money from Vice, but you never know. I think that in all likelihood an MLW contract is probably not your sole source of income. But I do think that could change. They are restrictive on what companies you can work for if they have you locked into a contract. I know they've sold out the 2300 arena for the Battle Riot tapings and I wouldn't be surprised if they stop running the smaller ballroom venues for tapings. In my opinion the venue they run in Queens is way too small.
I don't expect MLW to rise up to 500k viewers any time soon but if they are able to get a big WWE release like Tommy End or Braun, you never know. But that seems wishful thinking.
They did sign hyped NXT release EJ Nduka, and he could be a homegrown star for them if all goes well.
I've kinda cornered MLW in the past, they have an ECW spirit to them. I also think the company name is the best name for a Wrestling promotion ever. Court is a great promoter in my opinion and does his best with what he has. It's just that money has left them with some undesirable talents for me at times.
A lot of the MLW shows I have been to lack that one "great match". When ROH was younger every show had at least one amazing match when you'd go to see them live, and I wish MLW had that as well.
ROH in those days was so fucking good. I'm talking the Danielson, Morishima, McGuiness, Joe, Aries, Tyler Black, Chris Hero, Kingston days. I have some amazing memories of the true spectacle of ROH at times. MLW has never given that feeling. They pull of that ECW style "surprise" pop though and put out some great hardcore style matches. Always hoping for more from MLW.

Nothing I disagree with here. Had no clue EJ Nduka had been released. Has a real star look. I get skeptical of companies picking up that sort of talent though, because you have to wonder why WWE let them go in the first place.
I don’t know where the game changing money would come from. DAZN hasn’t been in the best place from reports, but they break bank a lot. Court has been able to sweet talk some pretty amazing things out of people. If he could loosen a bit of cash to get some top guys to do a big thing and get the eyeballs, all their streams benefit.
I spend a couple of morning coffees yesterday fantasy booking ROH with Danielson, Punk and Brock Lesnar involved. Became the #2 promotion instantly. Didn’t really need Brock, but it was gravy. They do have some great assets.

Naturally there are already Twitter arguments breaking out with people claiming you can't possibly be mad at Jimmy Uso for having an addiction.
I mean obviously he needs help and I hope he gets it. But drunk driving kills roughly 30 in the US per day and injures 300,000 per year. You can absolutely be mad at the guy, especially if you know someone who has been a victim of this behavior.
I can buy that argument for the drinking, but there is no addicition to driving. And that ESPECIALLY applies to someone who can afford a personal driver. I don't even mean uber or a taxi, I mean an actual person he could pay to drive him.

David Starr who was the first wrestler outed during the Speaking Out movement has resurfaced on Twitter after a year, posting about all the rehab he's gone through in the past year etc.
Do I think people are capable of change? Yes. But that doesn't mean you can waltz right back into a having a platform.

Probably still in the top five! Right, AEW fans?
Does USA even look at the average over the three hours, or do they take each hour as its own real estate? Because Showbuzz used to list each hour separately.
Not saying the WWE doesn’t have a problem with declining viewership. They do. But god damn people on the internet are stupid.

If the narrative being spread is that USA sees a 1.4 average as opposed to 1.7 for hour one, 1.5 for hour two, etc. then it’s just bullshit designed to polish the knobs of internet marks.

Who is spreading any narrative about how USA sees the numbers?
You can take your pick. Meltzer, Alvarez and anyone who stands to make a profit of selling a “WWE bad” narrative are probably the best place to start. Meltzer lies through his teeth to make AEW seem more impressive than it is. Never mind that the talk of demos has only popped up to make AEW look good, even though it’s bullshit and everyone knows it.
If you want to sell a newsletter or subscription to your feed or whatever, do whatever you can to make the WWE sound like it’s receding in a way that is going to deathly embarrass its network. Meanwhile, AEW is super cool, way to go.
Then you get impressionable folk like slik and Smeat, who aren’t the best at critical thinking, and it gets regurgitated until it becomes something you actively need to correct.
A recent example of this is when a lot of AEW fanboys thought that Meltzer was reporting the domestic buyrate of Double or Nothing recently. This was because Meltzer deliberately conflates domestic and international buys when comparing it to the domestic buys of other promotions. It’s very easy to lead people astray, and it might just be mildly annoying to some, but when you care about honesty, it can be downright infuriating that there are not more unbiased voices.

This was the only part of those 4 paragraphs that kinda sorta addressed the question. The rest was random unrelated AEW/Meltzer rant #3,452.
So apparently this quote...
“WWE Raw on Monday on the USA Network was watched by 1,472,000 viewers, a new all-time low for the show that debuted in 1993.
18-49 viewership was almost the same as last week, slightly up, and the 3rd lowest on record.”
is an attempt to make it sound like WWE is receding in a way that is going to deathly embarrass the network? Or were you just reaching for a reason to rant about AEW/Meltzer?

Groan, you’re being that walrus guy again. Don’t do that.
Yes, the entire discussion around WWE’s business metrics is designed to spin a marketable narrative. Anyone can see that. You’re just being a stick in the mud to try and turn that into an argument.
Misrepresenting ratings data, changing its context, conflating data, preying on anti-WWE dispositions — it’s all part of the same ball of twine.

You just saw a post stating that Raw got its lowest ratings ever and got triggered because it freaked you out that a bad story about WWE might be looked at as pro-AEW somehow so you had to spin shit. Suddenly the HOURLY ratings are what’s important now.
Again, the overrall rating has ALWAYS been what is used primarily when discussing the ratings. You never complained about it before. If the contextualization of the rating is wrong, then it’s wrong. Doesn’t matter how long people have been wrong for. The overall Raw rating doesn’t likely mean shit to anyone but subscribers of that groupthink.

Fan v Noid is the feud that we’ve all been waiting for years.
Memories...
Used to love the shit out of Funaki.
Can’t wait for Funaki’s Hall of Fame induction.
Funaki-san! Loved that guy.
Armageddon was traditonally a very shit PPV. Besides the spectacle of the 2000 Hell in a Cell, I think the highlight was Funaki’s “Armageddon your Cruiserweight Title” line in 2004.
Pimp Funaki would be a damn good manager gimmick.
I miss Funaki. :(
Used to love fucking Funaki. Going to be so happy when he goes into the WWE Hall of Fame.
I really want Funaki to be included in a WWE video game and be super-powered for some reason.
Funaki-san! Loved that guy.
Was going to post about how much I loved Funaki. To be fair, I think he chose to leave the WWE due to neck problems. And he recently was used to help climatize Hideo Itami and even appeared on television.
Love that Cena does Funaki's Rising Sun.
Funaki-san! Loved that guy.
I remember back when CM Punk was doing The Straight-Edge Society, I would have marked out for Funaki joining the stable, shaving his head, with Punk pointing out that he's one of the most dangerous men on the WWE roster, but no one takes him seriously...until now. Start dressing him in black and focusing on submission-style wrestling.
While Sakamoto was on the WWE roster, I had also hoped that the WWE would give Funaki a call to come in as the manager/trainer of Yoshi Tatsu & Sakamoto, who would become a heel team. I'd just settle for a random NXT appearance here or there.
I was actually this close (assume I am holding my fingers apart slightly) to suggesting Funaki return as Sin Cara's mouthpiece.
Funaki worked TNA's latest PPVs tapings. This feels bigger than it should be. Loved Funaki. He had a good gig as the cute act and enhancement dude, but it's a shame he never got to show quite what he could do. Would have loved to have seen a bitter heel Funaki at one point during the brand-split era.
Funaki-san! Loved that guy.
I like Funaki more than most. The guy has above average mic skills, and when you think about his character (I mean really think about his character), it's pretty fucking credible. I do think he deserves a World Title run just for his tenure with the company.
I miss Funaki. :(
Hey, I'd take a tug from Funaki.
On to Kung Fu Naki:
I like that the WWE are doing something with him. I like that by simply implying he has gone and gotten martial arts training, he has rounded out his game enough to be a player in the WWE. What I do not like is, again, that it took them so fucking long to work out that a) Funaki is talented, and b) He is Asian and has a name that could be connected in pun-form to "kung fu," which they could inaccurately link with images of the Japanese and gi's. It's a light-hearted gimmick, though, which is a field Funaki can own and become world champion someday.
Another position of this is it gets Funaki away from his old image. Look, aestetics in wrestling are often understated. Not so much size and muscle definition, but things like the attire a guy wears, and his entrance. Funaki, for the longest time, has had the same theme music, and has worn the same colour scheme: blue and white. It was refreshing just to see Funaki with red wristbands. It may not seem like much, but by losing the "SmackDown!" tights, and the same old colour patterns and theme music, the image Funaki puts in the minds of fans can itself change more easily over time.
And hey, a push is a push. He should start using the Superkick as a finisher again, though. He used it briefly during his run as Cruiserweight Champion, in what I assume is homage to Shawn Michaels (he's apparently a big HBK fan, going as far as to move to San Antonio, Texas). The Sweet Chin Ongaku making its return with the martial artist gimmick could work out really well.
Funaki-san! Loved that guy.
I miss Funaki. :(

After enjoying Mania, the follow up Raw and SmackDown failed to hold my interest and I've been out ever since. I'll probably try again and watch the first SmackDown and Raw with fans and MITB. If for no reason other than the novelty of seeing everyone's reaction to walking out in front of a crowd again. Whether they can hold me longer than a week again remains to be seen, given their booking track record probably not but I'll give them a go just because having fans makes any show feel refreshing.
Would really suck if the south's unwillingness to get vaccinated leads to variants serious enough to require another shutdown and wrestling grinds to a halt again. I can't handle any more pandemic wrestling.

I’m pretty sure this is the element of Memphis that is most maligned. Also, given that Freddy’s mask is on the line, they clearly aren’t trying to pass this off as the real Freddy. Is the work and psychology a bit shoddy? Sure. But today you’ll get wrestling promotions actually trying to pass someone off as a space alien or a witch.
And that was way more entertaining than AEW. And hey, the crowd there loved it. Isn’t that the metric by which we’re supposed to grade now?

Yes. Unironically. Because more people are cheering for Freddy in this studio than cheer for the average Flippy McHighspot in any arena. It's easy and difficult at the same time.
It's easy because, physically, you aren't killing yourself working shtick like this. A couple of soft bumps and that's it. A guy you want to see win vs a guy you want to see lose, it's not rocket science.
It's difficult because, in order to have a match like this, people have to give a shit about you. People don't care about you, they're gonna shit all over it. But if they care, you don't have to do much of anything to get the crowd behind you.

Supposedly WWE recently put out an internal mandate that Daniel Bryan is to be excluded from any future projects, such as the upcoming video game etc. Feels like a bit of a non-story given he's no longer under contract and it's pretty normal to cut released talent out of those things, but he's also been gone for two months and maybe they assumed he would've inked a new deal by now.
I'm still not holding my breath on him going anywhere but back to WWE whenever he decides to return to wrestling. But he's probably just enjoying his time off and getting to be a dad. Wouldn't be shocked if we don't see him resurface anywhere for a long while yet.

There could be a thesis written on how wrestlers enter the Rumble and it’s relative benefits. Sprinting seems to be the worst option but so many do it. I like what Akeem has done here with the “getting my schtick in” plus a light jog.
“Getting my shtick in” is undeniably the best. See: Bushwacker Luke. Remembered to this day. Sprinting only works for forgettable jobbers and Titus O’Neil.
https://64.media.tumblr.com/11b823d46764951f3659c2d05dcca89a/tumblr_nzkbg37JQM1srbyoyo1_400.gif
I especially love it when a guy enters a Rumble with such a shtick that it stops the match dead because his shtick is more important.
The best one was Ernest "The Cat" Miller with the whole James Brown-esque entrance complete with hype man Lamont. There's "getting your schtick in", and then there was that work of art, where Taz was trying to get JR to sing the song with him on commentary.
... unfortunatly, the segment doesn't appear to be on YouTube anymore [I was going to post it here]. Even worse, the places that have the song up refer to it as him using "Brodus Clay's theme" like The Cat didn't precede the guy by a few years.

This makes me sad where it should be exciting as fuck.
Let me elaborate: a number of years ago, while these two were toiling in the undercard, they kept having these amazing yet throwaway classic matches that they honestly had zero right to have. I distinctly remember calling them "each other's Flair and Steamboat". They weren't even feuding. It was legit good shit with no impersonation of Vince in saying that. Absolutely magical stuff. With proper build to present both Dolph and Kofi as actual fucking stars, this could have been a holy shit, WrestleMania level main event match in-the-making.
Instead, I'm just reminded about how the company has dropped the ball on them both, each in different ways... and those matches took place I believe between the time Dolph got that bullshit 90 minute world title reign, and before Randy Orton called Kofi "stupid".
They both deserved better, and this would have been that treatment bearing fruit. Instead, folks won't care nearly as much as they could have if these guys were historically handled better.

Lol Im pretty sure Destor is part of the “blame the fans” crowd based on past conversations. He’d be a good person to grill about that logic.
If WWE listened to fans, indie darlings like Kyle O'Reilly and Cesaro would be multi time champions. There's a reason they do not heed the masses.

AEW "listens to the fans" and that's why their numbers are stagnant. They cater to their fans.
Fucking Zack Ryder would be 5x world champ if the WWE did that.

WWE does listen to fans. They just half-ass it. And that’s why their numbers are falling. Kofi Kingston is a former world champion.
I’d respect them more if they just committed to saying “Fuck the hardcores. We’re focusing on mainstream appeal.”
Instead they try to appeal to everyone at any given time and it ends up appealing to no one.

I'd rather sit through 10 Triple H reigns of terror.

Kofi's ascension wasn't entirely organic. Fans weren't clamoring for a Kofi Kingston title run until he was chosen to replace Ali in the elimination chamber match. The push began in February and culminated in April when he won the belt. It's not even in the same league as that of Daniel Bryan's rise. There was no sustained uproar after Kingston lost the title to Brock. The fans like to pretend that they care. It was merely a business decision for an obvious reason. Just like the smackdown women's championship match at this year's Wrestlemania event.
I think this is pretty true, no wrestling fan wants WWE to put on a bad show and it's generally frustrating they've been so all over the place for the last decade.

Welcome to about 5 years ago. Fans say that and they want to see themselves as honest, but the truth is they have really fucked up ideas about what works and doesn’t work. They still have markish responses to the product that they think they are smarter than, and they react as contrarians to a lot of shit.
It doesn’t absolve WWE if their more egregious shit. They’re largely responsible for this climate, where voices that just want to enjoy wrestling are drowned out by people who think that their opinions are good or developed enough to warrant being heard. They ran off normal fans. But fans are not these unbiased arbiters of quality either. They will choose Zack Ryder over John Cena like it’s a good idea. They will lie about how over something is or isn’t. They want a product for their obsessive ego. You kind of have to move past that fan and the people in that circle who empower these really zonkers dispositions.

Former WWE Million Dollar Champion Virgil was on today’s episode of The Wrestling Inc. Daily (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-wrestling-inc-daily/id1494954271). WWE recently celebrated the 25th anniversary (https://www.wrestlinginc.com/news/2021/07/wwe-announces-nwo-week-programming/) of the nWo, and Virgil explained to Wrestling Inc. Managing Editor Nick Hausman his role in the iconic faction.
“I think I made Hulk Hogan’s whole career,” Virgil expressed. “Ted Turner and I put together the nWo. I got paid all day. I was like a moving reindeer. It was Too Sweet Meatsauce week. Olive Garden gave me a special order with Eric Bischoff because they love me that much. They put out a restraining order on Eric Bischoff because he followed me to Olive Garden. I guess he wanted a bunch more meatsauce or something. He’s obsessed with me because I’m the Meatsauce King.”
Virgil continued, “I was the original member coming in. It was Hulk, Scott Hall, Kevin Nash, Ted DiBiase, myself and X-Pac.”
Before joining WCW, Virgil spent nearly a decade in the WWF. He revealed a move that a future WWE Hall of Famer would be known for throughout their career.
“I kicked Alex Wright’s ass in a dance off in a parking garage, and I put my foot up in his ass,” Virgil recalled. “He was talking s**t like he could out dance me. I had the dance off, and I shoved my foot up his ass. I invented the dance called the Spinaroonee. Disco Inferno had a spin off. He spun on the ground like a donkey, and then I spanked his ass.”
Virgil then went on to talk about his new mobile game “Meatsauce Madness”. Discussing what fans can expect from the game.
“I’m the prototype. I played it for hours,” Virgil said. “I went into a food coma playing. I went to Olive Garden playing it.
Fans can expect all of it when you guzzle the beef. I think you might have been guzzling some beef. Look at you. [Virgil does a horse impression]. I guzzled so much I got garlic nipples. I’m a unicorn. All the game is my favorite part, from the platform to the end. I love it all.”
it's a real game Meatsauce Madness (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/meatsauce-madness-the-game/id1575299716?mt=8&ign-mpt=uo%3D4)

There's still loads of tickets for the MSG SmackDown, which is actually being billed as a "SuperShow" with Raw.
I would normally laugh at the Garden not being an instant sellout but just looking at the obscene prices it's not particularly surprising.

People can make all the excuses they want but any wrestling show outdrawing WWE in any demo on any night of the week is a testament to how badly WWE has sat on the ball and butchered their monopoly on the business. They should be so far ahead that this shouldn’t even be a discussion.
People who say AEW viewers are a niche audience whose only fans are the nerdiest of wrestling nerds are exactly right... And that’s why WWE should be embarrassed. They won a war and then took 20 years off and it’s showing.
