I've got a feeling that if The Rock does come back and wrestle at WrestleMania 35 (which I am dubious about) to work with Roman Reigns (which I am also dubious about), then Triple H will wrestle Shawn Michaels on the show. There's no way Triple H is not going to be featured on a WrestleMania card that could potentially spike Network numbers. If he just works a filler match against a guy like Seth Rollins, he won't be able to take credit for being a part of that spike, so he'll be working with a huge name so he can be grouped in with The Rock when they announce the numbers going up. "We had The Rock vs. Roman Reigns, Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels, Ronda Rousey, John Cena, etc."

It'll be either Michaels or they'll cave and give Big Dave that call.

I would be very excited if the WWE were to accommodate Batista's request to work a program with Hunter. It is quite baffling that they haven't made any efforts to latch onto his Hollywood success.

Toss Cedric Alexander to the growing pile of celebs and athletes who didn't bother to scrub their social media accounts and now have their past postings come back to haunt them.

In Cedric's case, seems his backlash is over rape jokes on Twitter from several years ago. Could be more but those were what got publicly outed.

I met Dreamer at a signing years ago (Edge was the "headliner") and he seemed super disinterested. I know people who have had good experiences with him though, so I'm thinking I caught him on a rough day.

Also John Morrison was way bigger than I thought he'd be haha

I hope in the future the main roster of #WWE is booked more like NXT.

Brand new main-event scene every two years or so. Out with the old and in with the new. Mindset you need to have the same people main-eventing for a decade is outdated & toxic IMO.

slik
08-01-2018, 10:26 AM
It's just like a soap-opera. A lot of characters come and go. Some, even main-event/major ones, only have 2-3 years worth of story to tell. Some might have a decade plus.

Bray is a perfect example - 2-3 years worth of good story & could have released him after that. WWE instead just hires and stockpiles people. A smaller, constantly cycled out roster would keep things fresh all the time. And you can always bring some people back, if needed, for another run down the line.

That's kinda why I've been really enjoying SmackDown. Some are showcased more than others but not everyone gets featured every week, not even AJ.

Basically, yeah

WWE fans have shown they are more loyal to the #brand than individual wrestlers...keep the show 'fresh' constantly.

Exactly.

Even with it's smaller roster, you don't see everyone all the time. The Bar is a great example too. RAW, minus Ronda/Brock, trots out every big name it has every week but seems like they have nothing for them to do most of the time.

You can keep people on houseshows w/o having them on TV each week unless you need them. Just like any good tv show, let the story/creative be the base for the show.

WWE these days seems 'petrified' to release people b/c they are randomly paranoid about some other organization gaining a microcosm of popularity compared to WWE -- And let's be realistic, even if ROH or NJPW or IMPACT or whomever suddenly got a national TV deal on cable that was better than what they have now, said organization wouldn't come close to WWE's grasp of the market/name value, they'd just be bigger than they were before.

slik
08-01-2018, 11:06 AM

Not AJ, AJ would be the definition of a cornerstone.

But someone like Shinsuke I'd book as a character in the main-event scene fora solid 3 years or so and then look honestly if he was needed after that.

It's sad that we're even talking about a 2 year shelf lives for guys. Hotshotting really ruined wrestling. I still feel like there's a way you can build up your midcard as more of a focus so you don't have to overexpose your top acts without sacrificing the product though.

The Broken/Woken stuff just never took off in WWE for a variety of reasons...took ages to get started with it because of the legal issues, WWE not really understanding the character beyond "Matt Hardy laughs funny", etc. Plus his team with Bray doesn't seem to be particularly interesting. I'm not really sure they'd be able to salvage interest in the gimmick at this point.

But no matter how it was executed, he still got to do the gimmick in WWE which from all indications was one of his goals when he re-signed. He also got a nostalgia run with his brother which saw him get one of the biggest pops in recent memory and is the very definition of a "WrestleMania moment" the company always harps on about. He's about to turn 44 and has two young kids at home, hardly would be a surprise if he's decided to call it a career after SummerSlam.

4-5 years might be a better sweet spot considering that was Stone Cold's length as a quality character and the Attitude Era in general.

Biggest flaw with a 2-3 year model plan is a lot less room for error on constantly pumping out quality stars or characters due to the shorter time frame and smaller roster. Even with a few mainstays as anchors, you still are going to risk hitting a really bad downturn after a while. Not even NXT was immune to this.

#1-norm-fan
08-01-2018, 03:37 PM
As far as Slik's strategy, I don't think you'd need to release guys after 2-3 years. If they worked, got over and then started to get stale, you could just transition them into a part time role in the hopes of creating that Lesnar part timer aura. It too hard to find stars to just throw them out after a couple years.

Also, fake injury angles to give guys time off, keep them fresh character-wise and stretch out storylines are underused in wrestling.

Emperor Smeat
08-01-2018, 04:11 PM
Even with the great idea of a rotation type system to keep storylines and stars fresh, feels like it would just fall apart unless major changes were also done to Creative and WWE's mindset.

Right now everything pretty much revolves around Vince's mood and their desire to only have 1 big star and the brand be the main focus while everyone else is irrelevant.

slik
08-01-2018, 04:43 PM
I know a lot of large cast series, like telenovelas and soaps rotate characters out. Someone gets a big story/feud for 6 months and then disappears in the background for a few months afterwards.

Would Roman feel as 'forced' if he was in the main-event only half the time and maybe the other half the time a smaller storyline/feud and house show rasslin?

#1-norm-fan
08-01-2018, 04:54 PM
He wouldn't. I actually don't think Reigns himself is bad. But at the same time, to Smeat's point, there would still be issues even if he were phased out once in a while. Like those brutal scripted promos and bad booking. Without those being addressed, it's a moot point.

I'm sure he would get a different "feel" if that was the case but I don't think it would happen unless they were able to get Cena to "fill in" for that time. But then again maybe the heat would follow him right back upon his return. I think they've gotten themselves into a trap where if they don't have "the guy" they can't sell more than 4,000 tickets anywhere. You gotta have "they guy" to bring in the casual type fans. As much as we wanted to see more Hogan, it always forced people to pay to see him on PPV or on tour. I think it's smart to actually book your top babyface that way instead of the heel (Lesnar). When has it every been special to see Roman, he's there every week. It would be so easy for Cole to promote Roman as "training for his upcoming match" or working with Make a Wish, or filming a TV show or movie... whatever they want to say to make it look like he's a big star. In that case you have to push the IC title as the "workers title" so that it's defended on a somewhat regular basis on TV so that people get their title match fix. I miss those days of the strong IC draw. Guys like Razor and Bret in particular were such great babyface "almost" top guys. I miss that.

Maybe if WWE was a lot better at long term planning and writing. That's pretty much a key difference between WWE's Creative and soap operas or telenovelas. WWE shows very little respect to both long term stuff and continuity which is why you get Sasha vs Bayley becoming a mess of a feud.

Then you have stuff like Reigns where they already tried to push him to the side a bit or give him smaller stuff to do but never bother to fix the real issues with his character or his booking.

Great point @ Jordan X -- and IIRC a lot of times the HBKs, Razors, Bret Harts carried house shows back in that day too...If Seth82 ever lurks and sees this he could probably verify that.

I am also wondering where Dean will go when he comes back -- but he's a guy like Seth Rollins and Balor and Elias you can load the house shows with and they all come across as big enough stars to draw.

Strong IC draws are very few and far between. Nobody drew in the Bret/Shawn/Razor IC era. The IC title used to headline the B Shows for the most part.

Cycling talent makes a lot of sense. Especially in an era where everything is so cold. But that used to be the way things worked. You'd keep talent when they worked really well, but if they got stale, you could refresh things by sending them on their way so they could come back fresh or go somewhere else and help that place out. It doesn't mean you have to cap acts that are over and doing a great job. But you could get rid of the people that have been around for ages and just don't mean anything anymore.

Or, you know, actually give people you're not using time off or permission to work elsewhere.

Funny how someone could concievably have 8 months worth of stuff, then be off TV doing nothing and still have to follow the company around. I mean, when was the last time Zack Ryder even had a match? The only people who get time to freshen up/rest up is, ironically, someone who is either seriously injured or pregnant.

And I've made my feelings known about the "WWE instead just hires and stockpiles people" part... I believe they do it just so that person with buzz isn't attracting the buzz elsewhere. I first noticed it with CM Punk. He was getting all this attention in the indies for his matches everywhere with Colt. WWE hired him and sent him to developmental, and had no idea what to do with him and were ready to release him... after essentially wasting a bunch of time and effort because he made a name for himself outside of the machine. It's only gotten worse over time, especially with rise of NJPW worldwide, and the resurgance of wrestling in the UK.

You now have a glut of actual talent in NXT. You have an entire division nobody thinks about in 205 Live full of talented motherfuckers vying for the "This Flippy Shit Is All Vince Thinks You Are" purple belt. You have them trying to expand this "Women's rEvolution" to sign a ton of ladies from all around he world... just to have Sasha vs. Bayley become the female Cena vs. Orton. And even when it looks like they might try to build new stars, they either pull hotshot bullshit like with Roman or Jinder or they cut the nuts off of anyone gaining traction. Watch the B Team fizzle out in a few months because WWE will be done with them. Won't even be AoP they get fed to, because both of those teams will fuck off to oblivion when War <s>Machine</s> Raiders show up on the main roster (or Street Profits, if they blow the load of Hanson and Rowe meeting Harper and Rowan in short order).

Raw begins with braun strowman and dolph ziggler. Angle tries to play a happy person but he's no one tonight. Kurt makes roman into angle and says that all the compliments. Paul throws sunil at summerslam and says that only reason was doing what smells him lesnar. Braun asks if anyone is in charge and says he refuses the universal title and is ready for brock whenever he wants to face ziggler and alexa lashley.
finn is in the ringside to face off bayley and says he is going to break his arm. Everyone attacks the crowd boos hard but he's faced every move and throws the match

backstage roman interview with elias and mcintyre. He says that it won a match since rumble but lays it out to be able to beat up hardy to strip lesnar of the first ever universal title.
ember moon and the revival lay into the ring. Seth sarcastically congratulates the revival. Corbin can't stop walking backstage. ruby says she's going to put stephanie and throws out seth. the revival takes on kevin owens who blocks out punch. Angle interfere match until summerslam.
triple h is interviewed backstage and says he is going to call stephanie to tell her that rousey doesn't have his hair and says she's banned.

mickie james is facing tyler breeze and won in throwaway match
the b team with another chance and tells them that they are two people with the same title and tells roode and titus graves that jojo is still there. roode and graves hits him with the shatter machine and won
raw superstars come out next week and tries to get him to cancel elias. He threatens nothing and leaves. elias strikes up a match and tries to get traded to summerslam. the crowd is interviewed backstage with apollo.

The ring has dash wilder against strowman but admits he doesn't have any title. paul heyman rushes out with another title and says that only rules are going to be enforced. Ziggler holds the title once again and flattens corbin. He threatens angle.

universal champion sasha says he's going to find sunil and tells interview that she deserves a long title after last week. Drew mcintyre challenges sasha and says she's about to be deleted.

Source is sketchy but rumor going around online teases WWE is likely ending the brand split next year in order to keep FOX happy. Supposedly WWE is worried FOX might back out of the tv deal early if ratings keep sliding downwards or have a lot lower patience level for Smackdown's struggles.

According to sources, there is some backstage speculation that WWE may once again be ending their brand split in 2019 in order to keep their new deal with FOX. WWE officials are reportedly concerned that FOX could back out of the deal due to ratings.

As previously reported here on eWrestlingNews.com, WWE and FOX agreed to a five-year deal back in May that is worth $1.025 billion for SmackDown! to air live on the FOX Network beginning in October 2019. WWE officials, including Vince McMahon, are reportedly worried that FOX could back out of a long-term deal due to the ratings for SmackDown! Live. If this were to happen, WWE would more than likely panic and end the brand split.

It should be noted that the exact details of the FOX-WWE contract are unknown and it’s said that FOX likely couldn’t back out of a deal worth that much so easily. The worst case scenario is that WWE SmackDown! Live would be moved to FS1 if it can’t compete live on Friday night’s.

Rumor might be related to the recent Observer Newsletter that mentioned FOX is already struggling a bit trying to fill in the gaps from UFC's programming without having WWE produce even more content than they already are. Same for FOX already preparing to spend a ton more money just on their cross-promotional plans for Smackdown.

I really don't understand why Carmella is anywhere close to a title. She is literally the same character as Alexa Bliss, but worse in every way.

Its been speculated for a long while its likely due to two reasons.

The first being she fits Vince's ideal image for a female star. She's blonde, has a model type body, and no real wrestling experience prior to WWE.

The other being the rumor Vince actually wanted Ellsworth to be the first ever MitB winner as some sort of twisted gag. Since he couldn't get that done, Mella with the MitB case was the next best option. Its also why they had to redo the first MitB match because of the backlash they got when Ellsworth grabbed the case to help Mella win.

I feel the same way. Alexa has improved significantly since she won the Smackdown Women's title for the first title. She feels quite credible and worthy of her program with Ronda Rousey. On the other hand, Carmella gaining pinball victories over both Asuka and Charlotte seems a bit excessive.

Its all about shifting pressure and weight away from the feet or else you'd crush a few ribs if you went full force into someone.

Balor does it by bending his knees and shift his body away to absorb most of the impact.

If the other person isn't prone but hoisting themselves on the rope, they help out by shifting their balance to spread out and lessen the impact.

Oh, wait..... Never mind..... it is Shayna..... thought it was a dude and was confused as to who it was and what title he was holding.....

I couldn't tell, either. Especially with the big "U" all over her face. I initally thought it was that Kona dude, and was wondering what the fuck belt he had, as it didn't look like the UK title. I thought they made up another NXT midcard championship and completely dismissed the Women's division given this implication.

lol I think he had Tough Enough burned into his brain, because they make everyone do everything. Everyone has to learn how to bump and feed, everyone knows how to do top rope moves, etc even if they're never gonna need to do that stuff in an actual match.

Morgan was so early in his career at the time he was on SmackDown that I think his instincts from training took over.

According to Post Wrestling's John Pollock, Ronda's main event on RAW managed to cause a spike in ratings but because it was too short and the bump itself was small, it didn't really affect RAW in the end.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">I was informed by someone with access to the quarter-hour breakdowns for Raw that the show as a whole did a 2.2 and the overrun segment feat. And before you play the "but he's older now" card that doesn't mean much at all. Back when he left wwe around 2004 one of the reasons he cited was not being able to do his workouts as much as he wanted to, and it showed as over the course of his first run he also went from very "ripped" at the start to noticeably less at the end. And just because you're older doesn't automatically mean you can't maintain a shape. He barely even appears on tv anymore so what's his reason for getting aesthetically out of shape?

Even looking at his shoulders they're far less defined and far more rounded, he has a gut that hangs over his shorts, yet apparently that's not "fat".

As for the lazy part, have you watched any of his fucking matches since he returned? 99% of them consist of 2 suplex variations and an f5 and thats it, if that's not lazy i don't know what is considering he's capable of much more and has just been phoning it in since his return.

Is that your newly found phrase for the day "keyboard warrior"? Might want to get with the times as the rest of the net overused it over a decade ago but it's seemingly your new discovery.

It's not even a matter of having high standards, if he was putting on good matches i doubt anyone would care, but has he? Even the crowd finally got pissed off with this "suplex city" shit as its painfully obvious he can't be bothered to do anything else yet Vince as deluded as he is for some reason is still throwing money at him.

Personally i hope this "run" is his last as his matches are good as a cure for insomnia and not much else.

I'd argue Lesnar's flabby look is a lot more related to him being off the roids or on a smaller cycle than in the past. Combine that with him being less motivated and active as a wrestler and his flabbiness becomes more apparent. Same reasons why his stamina in matches has gotten worse in recent times.

Triple H had a similar flabby look every time he went off the roids to have kids.

Joe has ALWAYS been that way though. I don't recall him ever really looking any different, at least not in the last 10+ years. Plus Joe can put on good matches, when was the last good lesnar match? You just have to look at that abortion of a mania match with Reigns and it tells you all you need to know. Lesnar has went from ripped and putting on good matches, to "fat" and phoning matches in. Coincidence? Doubt it.

Listening to the Matt Morgan one right now. Pretty great so far. I 100% agree with Cornette on Morgan: he should have been a headlining star. I've been a huge fan of his since he debuted. I don't get what happened

The Justin Credible one is basically Justin fucked up on something, putting himself down and rambling. I had to shut it off.

I love hearing Cornette's response to an emailer criticizing Morgan and not getting what Cornette saw in him because he looked like a boring goof on television all the time. Corny was like "Of course he did! WWE and TNA fucked it up so bad!"

I mean, Cornette was under no obligation to love the guy. He could have seen the criticisms everyone else did, or disapproved of him because he came from Tough Enough. But he made a difference to the bottom line and won over Jim Cornette.

It really is bizarre. Like, even if you fell on the side that he isn't very good -- the guy should have gotten way more chances just based on his size and that he came from Tough Enough, given that they wanted to push the show so much. Even if he was awful (which I don't think anyone would objectively say he was), why wouldn't he get more shots? Why wouldn't they bring him back for a Royal Rumble spot to stand above everyone else and then get tossed out by the Braun Strowman of the time or whatever? He looked cool as shit putting Big Show through the table with the F5.

Vince has a history of needing to change guys when they come up. Cornette thought Cena was going to be a Ric Flair-style heel, so he's got to be the blue-chip babyface. Orton was going to be a babyface; let's push him as a cocky heel. Rico was going to be the all-American babyface, well, say hello to your gay stylist. Doug Basham, The Damaja, Rob Conway and Nick Dinsmore -- four staples of your mid-card? Nah, say hello to twin gimps, a "French sympathizer" and your mentally challenged person. Very few guys actually came up from OVW as is. I think the only ones were MNM, thinking about it. I wonder if the need to change Morgan was something too overpowering for Vince, and Morgan was only going to work within a certain context?

The stuttering thing was just fucking stupid though. Why would you purposely give anyone a gimmick designed to give them such a laughable weakness? It'd be like giving someone a narcoleptic gimmick. It kind of symbolizes all the things I legitimately hate about the WWF/E, lol. They will actively go out of their way to make things bad sometimes. Why?

I'll start on that podcast though. Thanks for the recommendation. :y:

I have memories of thinking A-Train was the worst guy on the roster. I dreaded seeing him each and every time.

I'm guessing it was just me being a workrate smark not thinking that big dudes who can brawl could possibly be good wrestlers.

I think you had it right on A-Train. I desperately wanted Giant Bernard to come back and be good, but Tensai fucking sucked, just like Albert and Prince Albert fucking sucked. The common denominator is Matt Bloom.

If Angle could move, I'd be into Brock vs. Angle. I could still get into the "story." Triple H and Stephanie force Angle to march to his death. It'd be a good "last match" for Angle. In theory. If Angle can't move his neck or his legs, then...yeah.

Lesnar is currently rumored to be interesting in working for both WWE and UFC once his current WWE contract expires.

Joe Peisich said on Barn Burner Radio’s Fired Up podcast that Lesnar had a very interesting meeting with Mr. McMahon last week before Raw.

“I’ll break some news. Brock Lesnar last week had a meeting with Vince and the higher ups with WWE and he has told them that he wants to work with both.”

“He wants to work with WWE and UFC. I don’t know how that’s going to happen, but if Brock does not lose the title at SummerSlam you could see him working for both WWE and UFC. Like I said, I don’t know how that works but he wants to work for both.”
