Fell asleep ridiculously early last night and woke up at 6am. Time to find something in my collection to watch. If I ever lose or break my external hard drive I might kill myself. I'd never be able to replace 10% of it.

Probably going to be around this level or worse for when WWE starts their own weekly NXT UK show. WWE is somewhat weak in the region for tv and WOS barely benefited from the lack of EPL games this weekend.
Won’t NXT UK be on the network though?

Yes although WWE also had plans for it to be on tv as well in the UK based on rumors.
Supposedly they shopped the brand around during the same time ITV kept delaying their own WoS plans. Was also speculated ITV might be interested in a deal with the WWE if they couldn't launch WoS.

If NXT UK is going to be on TV in the UK, I can only imagine it would be on Sky Sports as they're the only channel in the UK that shows WWE Programming.
I can't imagine WWE going somewhere else and risk potentially making Sky unhappy.
I think I’m misinterpretating you’re post about WOS. Are you saying that NXT UK will adversely affect WOS viewership, or that WWE can expect similar ratings?
Emperor Smeat
09-09-2018, 06:27 PM
WWE can expect something similar in ratings. Maybe even worse considering TNA/Impact used to beat RAW for weekly ratings in the UK.
WWE already helped damage WoS by taking away some of the talent ITV originally had set for deals.

Killer Khan and Andre had an awesome feud in 1981. I think it won feud of the year in the Wrestling Observer awards.
People who say "Hogan can't work" have seen too little of his 84-86 run before he became obnoxious and his matches became repetitive. He was having these 9-12 minute sprints where it was balls to the wall pure action. His MSG matches with Muraco in 1985 for example.

lol I was watching Killer Khan v Randy Savage and Khan went to blow the mist in Macho's face, and he ducked. Khan then gets all confused and distracted for some reason, and Macho school boy's him for a 3. Literally no reason to get distracted lol.

Currently watching Jim the Anvil Neidhart vs S.D Jones. Neidhart was with Jimmy Hart at the time, but Bret was still a face.
Just watched Barry O beat Rene Goulet in a real barn burner. Mean Gene Okerlund compared the smell of Rene Goulet 's glove to a Gas Chamber.
Feature match at least is Greg Valentine vs Tito Santana.

Apparently Jerry Lawler is upset WWE doesn't let him be on their shows anymore and blames it on PC culture instead of him being an actual pervert.
Also implied its not fair to have to treat female wrestlers the same as male wrestlers on tv and nor is it fair that his rep as a commentator is associated with the word "puppies."
The latest edition of Dinner With the King with WWE Hall of Famer Jerry Lawler is now online. The show was recorded in Chicago during Starrcast, and featured Lawler speaking to a live crowd. Below are some highlights.
Jerry Lawler on being associated with the word “puppies” in WWE:
The thing with the puppies, I did not coin the phrase. I was not the first one to say the phrase on WWE TV; but, because like you said I am so associated with that word puppies, most people think that way. That is probably the reason I’m not on TV anymore and I mean that seriously because they [WWE] went so politically correct. It’s not necessarily PG because they’re not PG. They’re further south than PG. They’re PC. They’re so politically correct to a fault and especially like they got so right now into – starting with the Revolution – now it’s all about empowering women and that’s a big political correct thing these days and everything, so WWE jumped right on that, so it’s about empowering women. They actually came to us and said, ‘Do not ever say that women are sexy or that they’re good looking or that they’re beautiful. You must treat them exactly like you would a male athlete. You could say that they are powerful, they’re strong, they’re athletic, all this stuff; but, nothing that would be considered sexist at all.
Lawler on slipping in “puppies” during the Raw 25th Anniversary show and Vince McMahon’s reactions:
This is like early on the show and I said, ‘JR [Jim Ross], it’s so nice to be here tonight and we’re gonna go back in time or something and I might even say puppies tonight.’ Immediately I hear [Vince McMahon] in my earphone (grunts), ‘Let’s stay away from that tonight.’ That was the last time it was ever said on there.

No one said he was one of the better things on the show. They said he was "a highlight". A highlight in a show of many highlights. The only was he is "standing out" is in not being a "waste of TV time/we don't care filler" like on RAW.

Another random prediction/premonition: CM Punk returns to the WWE imminently. For a while, him returning would have been spun by audiences as hypocrisy, and when his integrity meant something, a stop off in New Japan or ROH would have made sense. Now that audiences have turned on him anyway, it makes less sense for him to do some "honor work" there. I think he will be back very soon and will get booed out of buildings Vickie Guerrero-style.
My prediction is a program with AJ Styles. Listen for the verbiage associated with AJ Styles to subtly switch over the next few months to go from "longest reigning WWE Champion in SmackDown history" or whatever to something not too far removed from Best in the World.
Mr. Nerfect
09-11-2018, 08:34 PM
If he's not standing out then how can he possibly be a highlight? The very point of highlighting is that something stands out comparatively. If R-Truth is standing out comparatively, then there is a huge problem with the stuff he is overshadowing. There should also be a universe of preferable options before you land on R-Truth anyway.
You know what I've been really enjoying lately? The common cold. It has sucked previous years, but lately it has been a highlight of my year. It just goes to show how awesome everything is when the common cold is one of many highlights of your 2018.

WrestleMania:
* Roman vs. The Rock
* Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels vs. Undertaker
* Ronda vs. Charlotte
* Orton vs. Cena for Cena's 17th title ("never before one-on-one at WrestleMania!")
* AJ vs. Punk
Can't you just imagine Vince frothing over that card? And they'll try to put it on NBC. The whole show won't be on there, but they'll get 4 hours and the other 6 or whatever will be on the Network.

I have found myself doing that before. I would be just about to go to bed then I would remember "Damn, Raw is on tonight" and I would then have to set my box to record it, then I would be able to go to bed.
Recently, I have been questioning why I even bother recording Raw and SmackDown (but mostly Raw).
Last week I pretty much skipped all of Raw because their was nothing on it that managed to catch my interest. I only stopped it to watch The B-Team's match but when Ziggler & McIntyre came out to face them, I just rolled my eyes and hit fast forward because I just knew that Ziggler & McIntyre would win, and they did.
With this week's Raw, I actually skipped all of it. As I was fast forwarding through it, I was keeping an eye out for anything interesting but it was basically just "The Shield Show" featuring squash matches.
• You had Strowman & Co. open the show with The Shield coming out. We then had three men wielding sticks (The Shield) take out around fifteen men (Raw Heels).
• Then we had Nikki Bella vs Ruby Riott in a match that was a foregone conclusion before the match even started.
• After that we had AOP come out with Drake Maverick (who by the way, looks absolutely ridiculous with them) and have a match in under two minutes against two jobbers.
• Triple H then came out to hype up AussieMania.
• The Tag Team Championship Match was around five minutes long and another foregone conclusion before the match even started. Rollins & Ambrose then made an appearance.
• Roode & Gable vs The Ascension was a three minute long squash match because The Ascension.
• Bliss & James vs Rousey & Natalya was really another foregone conclusion but it was a decent length and wasn't really a squash match. I wonder why (I say sarcastically).
• Then we had Elias do what he does and just play a few cords and then get interrupted by someone. On a rare occasion, a match quickly follows. This was one of those rare occasions.
• We then end the show with Reigns standing tall over Strowman.
It's painfully obvious that the end result of this Shield/Strowman & Co. angle is going to be The Shield standing strong with all of Raw's Championships.
Because of that, you're going to get a Tag Team Division that means less than it did before and Strowman looking stupid and like a bitch because he told everyone when he was going to cash in his MitB and he'll be added to the list of Cash-In Losers along with Sandow and Corbin.
Raw's Tag Team Division isn't exactly great but it seemed to be going somewhere with The B-Team actually being shown as working their way up the ranks of the division and The Revival being super hungry for the titles. Before that, Wyatt & Hardy had a decent run and The Bar were actually doing great before the black mark of Strowman & Nicholas happened, just so new titles could be crowned in Saudi Arabia which would please the Saudi's.
With Rollins & Ambrose as Tag Team Champions (and Rollins as IC Champion, who by the way, I actually forgot was IC Champion), I get the feeling that their just going to hold on to them whilst they follow Reigns about trying to make him look good and get people to cheer him.
When you keep digging deeper into what's going on on Raw, you basically find out that everything that is happening is only being done to make Reigns look good, even if he has absolutely nothing to do with certain wrestlers or divisions. The only wrestlers that are safe from anything Reigns related is the Women's Division.
Every single male wrestler's job on Raw is to make Reigns look good.
I find that to be pretty crazy.
It wasn't even anywhere near that bad when Cena was going through is "Super Cena" period. At least back then the Intercontinental Title scene and Tag Team Division, along with the jobbers were all safe being in their own little worlds.

Just thinking about Cesaro, someone who I love and have often felt should've gone further than he has before realizing he's actually right where he should be.
I think he's an absolutely world class performer but he's never had that intangible, the innate charisma and likeability that would have made him a truly top star.
One of the problems he has is that his best character work is done when he's a sort of smug, cocky, pretentious foreign star who knows exactly how good he is...but his best in-ring work is done when he's a fiery comeback babyface. So he's either a heel with a toned down style that's sort of boring or he's a face with no personality, so he never gets that top-level crowd reaction
I think he's found his niche in WWE as a tag performer, he's absolutely the best babyface hot tag house-on-fire in the business and when he's a heel, the current style of tag team wrestling helps him get away with being a bit more exciting in the ring. It's really the perfect spot for him.

I do seem to remember him being funny and charismatic when he was in the indies, but I think it really comes down to how WWE portray him, and the fact that he may not have the smoothest of promos at times doesn't help either.
I still hold out hope that he'll one day be a main eventer. Even if it's just one of those "thank you" title runs like Mark Henry or Kane in 2010 or whenever that was.

He did have a really great chance to go to the next level as a star after crowds picked him to be their next Bryan but Vince and WWE squashed any chances of that ever happening.
Happened after Mania 30 when Bryan got hut but instead of WWE capitalizing on the reactions to build a new big star, they became very petty and killed off all the momentum Ceasro built up.

Absolutely since he teased several times about wanting to do some dream matches in the indies before hanging his boots up.
To be fair a bit, Bryan also mentioned a few times that Brie was the reason why he fought as long as he did to get medically cleared in the WWE. Without her, he probably ends up in Neville or Rey Mysterio situation for the long run.

After a quick search on the Superstars page of WWE.com, it seems like Nikki Bella is still advertised as a Smackdown competitor whereas Brie Bella isn't associated with either brands, which means that she's a "free agent". That being said, John Cena is listed as a RAW competitor, although he's advertised as a "free agent". The amount of inconsistency in the company is baffling considering how anal they're about production.

Cena being a free agent this long pretty much makes both GMs look dumb if neither could lock him up to a deal.
Also sort of a sad state of affairs on WWE's end that they couldn't even get to 2 years with the current Brand Split era before needing stars to appear on both brands.
If they want to float the idea of stars being free agents, it needs to be done for the next Superstar Shakeup. Have a few stars test free agency while others get a bidding war storyline done. Would generate a few weeks worth of really interesting tv.

I really love Cesaro -- I think he's brilliant in the ring, and he has the sort of "naturalistic charisma" I really like. It's not extroverted and it's not "innate." He just seems like a cool dude that is very confident and likable in life. That's without knowing the guy, of course. But that's not the charisma that gets you places in WWE.
They say they tried with him. I thought putting RVD into his program with Jack Swagger was a mistake. Just ride Cesaro's crowds reactions and let Cesaro outclass his former partner. I always thought Sheamus would have been a good opponent in Chicago (which is what they did), because Sheamus was a babyface (Cesaro was still a heel, just one with appeal to smart crowds) and you could have had Cesaro outclass him to a great pop. I was not really in on breaking up The Shield, so I think Money in the Bank should have gone to him.
What happened was that the Triple Threat distracted from Cesaro, they had to put Sheamus over Cesaro because he won the US Title inexplicably, and Seth was getting MITB. So Cesaro, this apparent world class competitor, lost a lot of steam from the booking too. It didn't help that Heyman was clearly getting notes that changed the directions of his promos from "Cesaro is going to be the guy" to "Cesaro is going to be a guy" to "Brock Lesnar, Brock Lesnar, Brock Lesnar." Ass.
So while there are clearly flaws with Cesaro's personality game, I don't think the booking helped him. They don't book to cover up weaknesses in WWE, and they don't book to fostered strengths either. As a result he has ended up valuable, but not someone that is easy to get enthused about.
Of course, he will probably get a push in about 5 years randomly and after everyone has totally believed there was any chance of it happening.

Remember last time how the brand split stopped having any rules or reason? It's that again.
The thing with this shit is that people who are genuinely engaged with the product are probably going to ask this sort of question. "Is Nikki a Raw girl or a SmackDown girl?" Because on the surface, they actually believe the brands matter, because that is what they were told. So there are probably a bunch of earnest people out there genuinely confused as to what the fuck is going on and having that engagement challenged. It's bad television filled with continuity errors and loose ends that never go explained. They actively make this hard for anyone who honestly wants to give them a go.
It might seem like a little thing, but shit like that matters. When you make rules, you need to follow them, or at least know how to break them. WWE does none of this. And they expect to win a fucking Emmy?

205 Live got bumped again from its time slot on the WWE Network.
Similar to last time, the new season of Mixed Match Challenge is taking 205 Live's regular spot but unlike last time, new episodes of 205 Live will now air before NXT on Wednesdays.
Being rumored this might also be a permanent change and not just lasting till the end of MMC season 2.
how are they going to do it live if they are going to do it wed, they need to take the live out of it and tape it like they do main event.
If it’s not going live they should record it before SmackDown to warm the crowd up, rather than having a burned out crowd post SDL

I finally got around to doing my now usual "Sunday Thing" of watching Raw & SmackDown from 2002.
I was supposed to be watching Judgement Day 2002 today but I didn't have time to watch Raw & SmackDown last Sunday so I watched them today instead and will watch Judgement Day on Saturday so I can be all caught up for next Sunday.
There wasn't really much to point out or say about the two shows other than they were quite enjoyable.
I noticed a big difference in the episode of Raw I watched where Booker T was announced at the new member of The nWo and what Raw is like now, in that in the episode of Raw I watched, the audience was always being given a reason to stay and watch, be it title defenses, appearances from big names or the main one, who the new member of The nWo would be.
All the way through the show the audience were being teased with this reveal of who it could be and through the work of some good promos, that you could tell came straight from the minds of the wrestlers themselves, the audience at home were always being told to stay and watch the show.
Now, the audience get nothing like this and the WWE's reason nearly every week to watch Raw these days is basically them saying "Hey guys, Roman Reigns is on the show tonight and he's going to beat up all the bad guys, sometimes all at once!".
Raw doesn't even have regular title defenses/changes like they used to from around 2002.
Anyway, before this evolves into a post I would usually reply to Noid with, the usual bullet points of random thoughts:
Raw:
• I'm actually quite surprised that Shawn Stasiak had the amount of TV appearances that he did. I've always remembered him being in the WWE and I've always actually kinda liked him, but I can't really remember him appearing on Raw the amount of times he actually did.
This episode of Raw even show fans with Stasiak signs. Something that actually made me say "wow" to myself, as I couldn't remember seeing any Stasiak signs when I first watched Raw around that time as a kid.
I liked his little crazy quirks he used to do, like his twitching/face pulling that he was doing during his backstage segment with Eddie Guerrero where Guerrero asked him if he's on drugs. It's the little things like that that I didn't really pick up on as a kid. I remember how he use to talk and I always liked that but it's the little things like the twitching/face pulling that really helped and added to the gimmick.
• This Raw was the debut of the "A Day In The Life Of Tommy Dreamer" vignettes and those are vignettes I remember extremely vividly.
I loved them and I still do.
• It's probably because I was a kid at the time but I didn't realise how good Steven Richards looked back then. He looked to be in great shape and it's probably the best I've seen him look.
• Finally from Raw, here's a random SpongeBob sighting from the show.
https://i.postimg.cc/1tzhCzNz/rickbob_flairpants.png
SmackDown:
• Some random French-Canadian midget came bursting out of a cupboard brandishing a camera, only to tell Stacy Keibler that he was "here with Panasonic's new e-Wear AV Recorder". He kept emphasising the letter "E" and appeared and then disappeared yelling "EEEEEEEEEEEEE!" so I'm assuming he was a character from Panasonic's adverts for the device and that was his catchphrase or whatever?
https://i.postimg.cc/Vv3xkBZS/midge.png
That was obviously edited out when it was broadcast over here in the UK because it's an advertisement but I didn't know that something like that actually existed, so this was the first time I had ever seen it and I just watched it in complete bemusement.
• There was an almost ten minutes of constant cheering for Hogan as he stood in the ring, which when it ended, Hogan called the crowd "awesome" and I think that if that happened today, the crowd would have broken out into a five minute "We Are Awesome" chant.
• Finally, a sign during Rico's entrance that is one of many wrestling signs showing bad grammar:
https://i.postimg.cc/MZV29gnV/image.png
(Just like last time, it's the difference between "Your" and "You're" that these sign makers seem to have a problem with)

Either WWE is really that lazy in the art or PR department to not notice it or whoever did it knew management wasn't going to catch it.
Last time WWE had a questionable poster, it took them a while to catch on and edit it. That was with Great Balls of Fire and the jokes of the logo resembling a wiener and set of balls.
TNA had a really shoddy poster for Lockdown one year where they did a terrible job getting rid of a cage render and don't think it was ever fixed.

According to Tommy Dreamer, WWE is still in a pissed and petty mood due to All In's success.
He found out first hand after holding a show at a recent Keystone ComicCon event. Problem for him was WWE either didn't know or forgot about it and threatened convention officials they were going to pull all their talent from the convention if Dreamer was allowed to hold his show.
They didn't go through with the threat and Dreamer mentioned the card for his event was nothing special nor did it have anything to do with WWE's presence at the convention. They pretty much tried to shut him down due to seeing the indies now as a direct threat out of an irrational fear.

Based on recent reports from the Observer and Post Wrestling, seems WWE has no clue on what direction they want to go for the Becky-Charlotte feud.
According to Meltzer and Pollock, WWE is now back on the idea of Becky being a full blown heel and Charlotte as the face star for the feud. Dropped whatever plans they had to make both tweeners in this feud and possibly going forward.

What makes it more baffling is that they then don't see how this is a detriment, and just complain about the complainers instead of... you know... addressing the complaints.
And the cherry on that shit cake is that "fuck you people who want good storytelling and character development" attitude flies in the face of the company that tries to tout themselves as being all about said storytelling and development because they're a television drama instead of a wrestling show.
You can't bitch about wanting to build stars to go to Hollywood, then bitch more when they actually go. You can't say wins and losses don't matter, and then either have someone win all the fucking time (Cena) even when it makes no sense, job someone to oblivion but still expect them to stay over, or try to push the 50/50 thing to where nobody is better than anyone else and you end up with an entire roster of midcarders.
You can't call yourself the thing you're actively rebelling against.

I mentioned elsewhere that I watched TakeOver, and noted the "Call Me Up Vince" on Patrick Clark's tights. I feel kinda bad that I *don't* want that to happen, and it isn't because he doesn't deserve to be on the main stage. He has been in developmental for a looooong time, and has finally found his way and landed in his groove. He's gone from "who's this clown?" to "goddamn, he's pretty impressive" in his time there. But, if he came up to the main roster now, he'll be just another face in the crowd by Christmas... and even a short time ago, I would have added the caveat about how the only way this would be untrue is if Vince made a project out of him, but he made one of of Kevin Steen, and look where that went.

Viceland released the entire list of titles for their upcoming wrestling documentaries looking at the dark side of wrestling.
According to the Observer, Viceland originally planned to make 10 documentaries but cut the list down to six instead. Among those cut was a documentary planned on Chris Benoit's career and life.
Viceland will be debuting a wrestling documentary series titled “The Dark Side of the Ring” some time this fall, which will cover “controversial” topics from the world of wrestling.
There will be six documentaries and they’ll be about the following topics, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter:
– Bruiser Brody
– Randy Savage & Elizabeth
– The Montreal Screwjob
– The Von Erichs
– Fabulous Moolah
– Gino Hernandez
... The series will be narrated by Mick Foley.

I'd rather have had one on Benoit than covering Montreal for the bazillionth time

Fucking hell. Viceland isn't available in Canada anymore. They had a series focusing on wrestling subcultures that I posted about a while back and it was fantastic.

Only real interesting topic left that has been barely touched in depth is the tragic impact the Screwjob caused for Owen Hart's life. Pretty much set everything in motion leading to his death less than 2 years later.
Out of the Hart Foundation, he was the only one to not jump ship to WCW but not out of loyalty to Vince. He wasn't financial strong enough to break his WWF contract unlike Bret and don't think WCW were interested or ever gave him a reasonable offer to leave.
Then you have the completely avoidable circumstances that led to both his Blue Blazer gimmick and tragic death at Over the Edge 1999. WWE being petty over his refusal for an infidelity storyline and his plea to not do the dangerous stunt from the rafters cost Owen his life in the end.

I am mad that I missed Brutus "The Barber" and Mickey Gall. A Cameo from either of them would have ended up being my best friend's Christmas Present.
