Looks like NXT is going to have another TakeOver in February instead of around WrestleMania time. So, I guess they will just have to steal the show from Fast Lane.

Takaaki Watanabe vs. Andy Dalton courtesy of Inspire Pro (Twitter: @InspireProWres)

I wonder if the Bengals are ok with him wrestling

Andy Dalton is great. If he wasn't so short he would be getting way more attention. Saw him vs Vordell last year and it was a great match.

Ignore my rambling I was a bit high when I was at the show.

So many people on the roster, I still see little reason to not expand the Royal Rumble to 40 or even 50 men.... 2-3 normal matches on the card, then 2/3 of the PPV for the Rumble itself....

I'd leave it at 30 men, but there is absolutely no reason that you should not have an awesome card outside the Rumble Match itself, making for an overall great and memorable PPV start to the calendar year.

You have the Rumble, then you obviously have a WWE World Title match, a Divas Title match, a Tag Title match, and either an IC or US Title match (I like the idea of at least one champion defending their belt on the show). Throw it one personal grudge match, and you could have a PPV for the ages.

I know people like the old-school feel of NXT only running shows every quarter, but I really feel like they could be doing one a month and really making the Network worth something.

Some of those are just crazy. And not having HHH on best interview, but having Daniel Bryan in the honourable mentions is the funniest thing I've read all week. Is this list written by the same people who believe Hulk Hogan did nothing for professional wrestling, and single handily killed it with the booking of his own character?

Hey! Yeah, wife is going great, the cancer thing is still lingering too. I booked and paid for my funeral the other day, and picked out my coffin. Since I'm donating my healthy organs when I die, and will be chopped up to bits, I chose one called 'Dexter'

Bet planning a funeral is surreal....

Fuck yes it is. Laying out everything from flower configurations, to music (I have THE best music planned), to food, and more. Thankfully I have someone organised to conduct it, he's registered to do so and is a good friend. His wife did Mikala and mines wedding too. But yeah, it really makes you think about your mortality when you're doing it, but I'd recommend anybody who feels they're strong enough to do the same, to do it. You can really have things how you'd like it by doing so.

Hell, thinking that I have (statistically) lived about half of my life is pretty fucking mind blowing at times. I am somewhat curious about life and death though. I am constantly wondering about "large scale" shit like that because it intrigues me.

I also credit the constant thinking on that subject to my more relaxed attitude than that of previous years. Just have fun as much as possible and cruise through the day. Work has fucked me off lately and before I thought like I do now, I would have probably been fired/arrested for doing some stupid shit.

I will plan mine simply to lessen the burden on my wife and children. My wife is going to be a wreck when my time comes.

I know that feeling. Mikala is going to be wrecked, and Sarah, my ex, won't be much better. So neither of them would have been any good in trying to organise, plus they may have butted heads on a couple of things as there are things I'd like done that only Mikala knew about before I booked it. It may even be live streamed, so Downunder will be given the link to share to everybody when the time comes for those who'd like to watch it.

Gonna leave is convo out of this thread now, we're kinda ruining it haha.

TPWW presents Dirtsheets Rumble - 30 sheets fighting for the right to point to the Sheetmania sign

As noted, WWE Tough Enough will be returning on the USA Network soon. The belief is that the new season will begin airing some time after WrestleMania 31. It's also believed that the show will be filmed in Florida at the WWE Performance Center. Before Tough Enough plans were nixed last summer, the idea was to have all WWE developmental talents on the show but based on the casting call issued this week, pro wrestling experience is not a requirement for the new season. It was noted that this season will have a different format than previous Tough Enough seasons. We do know that the new season will have some live elements to it. There's also no word yet on who the Tough Enough coaches will be. Bill DeMott indicated on Twitter that he will be on the show but that's all we've heard. WWE had planned for Steve Austin to host the Tough Enough show they wanted to film in 2014 but his name has not been attached to this new season yet.

As noted, the next live WWE NXT Takeover special will take place on February 11th. The original plan was to do the next special in March but the recent NXT TV tapings were re-written at the last minute and storylines were sped up to have the special in February.

WWE wants TV personality Maria Menounos to host the 2015 Hall of Fame red carpet arrival in San Jose, according to The Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

Chris Jericho noted on Twitter that Friday's Talk Is Jericho guest will be Lanny Poffo. Poffo will discuss why he's allowing WWE to induct Randy Savage into the Hall of Fame.

While WWE previously announced that Sunday's Royal Rumble Kickoff pre-show would be just 30 minutes, the WWE Network is currently advertising a one-hour pre-show. Speaking of the pre-show, Booker T announced on Twitter that he will have a special interview with Shawn Michaels this Sunday before the Rumble. Also confirmed for the pre-show is The New Day vs. Cesaro, Tyson Kidd and Adam Rose in an elimination match. WWE Network is also advertising a 15 minute Royal Rumble Fallout post-show for 10:45pm EST on Sunday. Like previous pay-per-views, this post-show will likely be nixed if the pay-per-view runs long.

According to The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, word is circulating that Philadelphia will be making a play to host WrestleMania 33 in 2017. The event would be held in Lincoln Financial Field with the Hall of Fame ceremony being next door at the Wells Fargo Center.
Was also in the running for Mania 31 and 32 before losing out to Santa Clara and Dallas.

Former WWE Diva/TNA Knockout Lisa Marie Varon (aka Victoria/Tara in WWE/TNA) was the guest on Jim Ross' latest podcast.

While discussing her time in TNA, Marie told Ross that she once spent $6,000 of her own money to promote a show they were going to do in Chicago and did a lot of promotion for the show without being asked to do. She noted that when she was sent posters for the show, they didn't feature her (a local celebrity) but instead another woman featured on the show.

When she spoke with Dixie Carter about all the things she did to help the company, all Dixie said was, "Yeah, I heard".

Later on, Marie stated that two people from the TNA offices sent an email to the roster telling them to promote another pizza place in the area (Varon owns the Squared Circle restaurant in Chicago) as the best pizza they've ever had.

Varon said that when she found out about it, she blew up and told Bruce Prichard, "The day I quit my job, I am going to punch that c*** in the face", referring to Dixie. Prichard, Varon says, responded, "You'll be doing all of us a favor."

Varon also noted the company was disorganized to the point she once learned she was booked to appear on a PPV when it was announced on Twitter, but had no travel information for the show and hadn't even been informed she was booked.

Other sheet news includes ROH considering dropping their iPPV model due to lower than expected buys recently and them believing the WWE Network lowered the value of PPVs ever since its launch.

I've watched them all, and they're all really good. Unlike the Monday Night Wars stuff that became mostly 60% retread, Rivalries has stayed pretty consistently great.

I really wish they'd do more stuff like that. The Legends roundtable stuff is my jam, and it's really disappointing that they haven't done any new ones since before the Network launched.

The old show on-demand library is great and all, but the original content going to be the best selling point.

One of the most talked about stories within WWE this past week was how Goldust is wrapping up his in-ring career. The talk is that Goldust will begin transitioning from a wrestler back to a full-time agent & producer soon. The change won't happen until after WrestleMania 31, so Goldust still has a few more months left as a full-time wrestler. It's believed the tag team of Goldust and Stardust will start to slowly fade out over the next few months. The idea is that Stardust will be a singles wrestler. There's no word yet if they plan on finally doing the Goldust vs. Stardust match but it's always possible.

The Wrestling Observer’s Wrestler of the Year, and New Japan Pro Wrestling’s Intercontinental champion, Shinsuke “SWAGSUKE” Nakamura has branched out from pro graps to music video domination. He’s teamed up with TEMPURA KIDZ, an adorable collection of Japanese kids. The girls are dressed up like High Energy, while the lone boy is a mini-Shinsuke, except with a mascot head. I think I want to write a series of deliberately terrible angles to see if it would get me the job at WWE.

One being a long running gag where someone lost something, and they're asking where "It" is. They see Cesaro, then just pass him by without even asking. This happens for a couple weeks until he gets mad and grabs someone by the collar, like "why aren't you asking me where 'it' is?"

It leads to the punchline of "We know you don't have 'It.'"

Okay, took a crack at fantasy-booking the Rumble like I did four years ago (http://www.tpwwforums.com/showpost.php?p=3383129&postcount=35).

==========

The introductions are made, and it's time to find out who drew #1...

"I'M HERE TO SHOW THE WORLD! I'M HERE TO SHOW THE WOOOOOOORLD!" #1 is DOLPH ZIGGLER. The former World Champion comes to the ring and warms up awaiting his first opponent. The odds are stacked against the recent re-hire. Suddenly, the lights go out in the arena and music that's completely unknown to most of the WWE Universe begins to play. A spotlight finds the stage where some... creature is making its way onto the ramp. As the music swells, it rises to hits hind quarters and as the lights hit it, we realize that this heavily-made-up man is NXT Superstar FINN BALOR! The smart crowd in Philly eats this up.

The two exchange quick counters and strikes early. No one is able to eliminate anyone until the countdown to #3 leads to the arrival of... DANIEL BRYAN! Cole begins to point out the remarkable coincidence of two of The Authority's biggest detractors entering the Rumble in the first three. More exciting back-and-forth between Ziggler, Balor, and Bryan until #4 is revealed to be LUKE HARPER. Balor charges right at Harper, only to eat a sickening big boot. The big man hits a discus clothesline on Ziggler, but eats a running knee from Bryan. D-Bry stands tall as the buzzer sounds for #5.

And it's BAD NEWS BARRETT. Barrett goes right after Bryan, but takes a series of kicks for his trouble. Once he's down on the mat, a recovered Balor comes off the top rope with a double foot stomp. As he lands, though, Harper grabs him and throws him from the ring. The rookie is the Rumble's first casualty. It's Ziggler and Bryan vs. Harper and Barrett as the countdown hits 0 to introduce #6 ERICK ROWAN. Cole continues to point out the obvious conspiracy while JBL says stuff that makes me want to die. Rowan and Harper go straight after each other and brawl. No one is eliminated before we see #7 RUSEV.

Rusev goes right after Bryan, almost as though he was instructed to by some sort of Authority figure. Ziggler and Barrett, Harper and Rowan, and let's add #8 BRAY WYATT. Wyatt, before he ever enters the ring, reaches up and grabs the top rope, low-bridging his former Family members Harper and Rowan, who tumble to the floor together. Meanwhile, in the ring, Rusev has managed to lay out everyone else in the ring and is standing tall as the countdown reaches 0 once more.

"FEED! ME! MORE!" #9 is The Big Guy RYBACK! More conspiracy talk, but it's cut off by Ryback going straight after Rusev. The two brawlers go at it for the full 90 seconds while everybody else rests up. We've hit the 12-minute mark and #10 is... ROMAN REIGNS. Reigns hits the ring and immediately eliminates a charging Barrett. More standard Rumble brawling until it's time for #11, the returning MARK HENRY! Henry goes after Ryback, so apparently he's a heel this time. Henry and Rusev team up to get rid of the Big Guy. The two monsters then toss Ziggler from the ring as well. While he celebrates, Henry is surprised by Rusev, who dumps him to the floor just in time for #12.

And it's R-TRUTH! He slides into the ring, only to be immediately clotheslined to the floor by Rusev. Rusev turns around... right into a spear from Reigns! Reigns gets to his feet and immediately eats the running knee! D-Bry is standing tall. Suddenly, Bray Wyatt, who up to this point hadn't actually entered the ring, grabs Bryan and tries to toss him out. Bryan reverses and sends the psychotic cult leader to the floor instead!

FANDANGO draws lucky #13 and dances his way to the ring. Along the way, he's blasted by a Sister Abigail on the ramp. Wyatt pummels Fandango until he's pulled off by an army of official and ring agents. Fandango never makes it to the ring and is officially declared eliminated from the match. Daniel Bryan, Rusev, and Roman Reigns remain in the ring as GOLDUST enters. Not much happens other than some standard battle royal brawling as we await the half-way point.

#15 is ADRIAN NEVILLE. The former NXT Champion makes his way to the ring. Some quick strikes on Goldust and a Red Arrow later, and the Bizarre One is tossed to the floor. DAMIEN MIZDOW is out at #16, and he eats some kicks from the rookie Neville while Rusev and Reigns brawl and Bryan catches his breath. #17 STARDUST targets Neville immediately to get revenge for his brother's elimination. No eliminations as we await #18.

"ONE OF A KIND!" The Philadelphia crowd erupts as #19 is ROB VAN DAM! RVD hits the ring with some of his trademark offense, kicks and a Rolling Thunder for Mizdow. Mr. Monday Night celebrates as we await the arrival of #19. THE MIZ comes to the ring. He gets in a bit of offense on RVD. RVD gets the advantage, but Mizdow joins in to help. #20 gets another huge ovation as SHEAMUS returns from his recent injury problems. He enters and immediately Brogue Kicks Stardust. Miz charges him, and Sheamus throws him to the floor. He then looks at Mizdow. All action stops as everyone focuses on Mizdow. Mizdow gets a running start and goes to throw himself over as well, only to stop and grab the top rope. "I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" he yells at Miz, who's furious at ringside. It's short-lived, though, as Sheamus throws Mizdow to the floor as well.

#21 is another return as BO DALLAS enters the match. He and Adrian Neville resume their former NXT rivalry, Rusev and Reigns continue to brawl, Bryan and RVD exchange kicks, and Sheamus and Stardust square off. It's Swaggie Time as JACK SWAGGER enters at #22. The match has hit the half-hour mark now as Swagger goes straight for Rusev. Neville manages to eliminate Dallas. #23 is the Lunatic Fringe DEAN AMBROSE! The crowd erupts as Ambrose enters the ring. He quickly throws Stardust to the floor. Rusev manages to eliminate Swagger, then turns his attention to Neville and eliminates him as well. Rusev is surrounded by babyfaces as the countown hits 0, heralding the arrival of #24...

A stream of pyro heads from above the ring and detonates on the entrance ramp. The Philly crowd explodes once more as The Dudley Boyz make it to the ring, table in tow! BUBBA RAY enters the ring and immediately exchanges punches with Rusev. Bryan and Ambrose square off as do Sheamus and Reigns. Ambrose chills in a corner, waiting to pick his spot as we await #25...

"I HEAR VOICES IN MY HEAD..." The crowd erupts once more as RANDY ORTON comes to the ring. RKO out of nowhere on RVD, who he then throws to the floor. RKO out of nowhere on Sheamus, who he eliminates. RKO out of nowhere for Bubba Ray, who he eliminates. The Viper sets his sights on Rusev as we enter the final five of the match.

#26 is JOEY MERCURY, who unfortunately comes across the Dudley Boyz, who 3D him through the ringside table. The crowd pops big one more time for the Dudleyz. They slide Mercury into the ring where he's pounced upon by the anti-Authority group. #27 is JAMIE NOBLE and Cole returns to conspiracy theory mode. He mentions that three men remain, two of whom we know will be members of the Authority. Noble slides into the ring, then immediately back out, dragging Mercury to the floor with him. He yells at the contingent in the ring. #28 is KANE, who joins J&J on the floor. Bryan, Reigns, Ambrose, and Orton try to goad them into entering the ring, but they know what they're doing. #29 is BIG SHOW. Now that the numbers are on their side, Show, Kane, and J&J enter the ring. It's the Authority and Rusev against Bryan, Reigns, Ambrose, and Orton! The ring is as full of bodies as it's been all night as we await the arrival of #30.

SETH ROLLINS "drew" the last spot in the match after losing in the World Title match earlier in the night. Bryan has now been in the match over 40 minutes, Rusev is at about 35, and Reigns has lasted a half hour. Everyone else is pretty fresh. They break off into pairs now: Rollins vs. Ambrose, Kane vs. Reigns, Big Show vs. Bryan, Rusev vs. Orton, and J&J picking and choosing where they want to get involved. Reigns manages to get rid of Kane, but is immediately double-teamed by Mercury and Noble...and sends THEM to the floor!

Rusev manages to muscle Orton out of the match, and we've got the requisite Royal Rumble monster staredown as Reigns and Rusev square off. Big Show hits Reigns from behind, knocking him into Rusev's arms. Big Show winds up for a WMD, but Reigns dodges and Big Show punches Rusev and sends him out of the ring! Reigns and Ambrose team up to take Show to the floor and we're down to the final four! It's Daniel Bryan and the former members of The Shield: winner goes to WrestleMania!

Rollins realizes that he's badly outnumbered and slides to the floor. Reigns and Ambrose shrug, shake hands, and begin to fight. Bryan gives chase to Rollins on the floor, who slides back into the ring and eliminates his former Shield mates! Ambrose and Reigns are furious, but we're down to two. Bryan and Rollins exchange strikes, but Rollins is a much fresher man at this point. 45+ minutes for Bryan, less than 5 for Rollins.

Soon, Rollins has Bryan on the ropes, but Bryan grabs hold with everything he's got. He finally manages to kick his way free and knocks Rollins to the mat. He goes up top for the headbutt, but Rollins dodges. He sets up for a Curbstomp, but Bryan dodges, then grabs Rollins from behind and sends him to the floor! Daniel Bryan is going to WrestleMania!

<font color=goldenrod>Great post, Loopy! I can't lie, I'd love it if the Authority all entered near the end including Mercury and Noble being in the match.

<font color=goldenrod>I can see The New Day collectively coming out and getting one entry, they do the usual odds and evens thing to decide who goes in. Kofi enters and the elimination spot can involve Big E saving him.

But yeah, at this point if they don't have an amazing elimination save spot for Kofi it's better than having him come out to just be another guy who throws a few punches and kicks and then gets thrown out.</font>

If Adrian Neville is in the Rumble this year, can easily see him get the signature wacky save spot done instead of Kofi.

Kofi would still get the "skin the cat" moment and close calls but not the big save spot.

Does anyone think Sting will play a role in determining the winner of the RR?

I don't know some kind of psychological game where after all 30 have come into the ring, the counter appears on the titantron, buzzer goes off and he comes to the ring or distracts the heels causing them to get eliminated?

Dean Ambrose interview from: http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/the-squared-circle/20150123_HED_TOO_LONG___PRO_WRESTLING_star_Dean_Ambrose_is_known_for_being.html

Greatness in bold

It was in Philadelphia, logging matches at Combat Zone Wrestling and Dragon Gate USA, that Ambrose (then known as Jon Moxley) got his crazy-man rep. It's also where he got the call to the WWE big leagues.

Tomorrow, Ambrose competes in the WWE Royal Rumble, taking place at the Wells Fargo Center and airing on pay-per-view, where he will be pit against 29 other wrestlers in a winner-take-all battle.

Ambrose shared some fond Philly memories when he spoke recently with Molly Eichel. He also had some fighting words for his opponents. "I'm going to win the god-d--- Royal Rumble in Philadelphia and probably go celebrate at the same dive bar I used to go celebrate at before and be the same son of a bitch I was then as I am now," Ambrose said. "It was also a strip club."

Q What does Philadephia mean to you in terms of your development?

I got a lot of hometowns. Philly is one of those hometowns for me.

That's the scene where I first really made name and built my reputation as a kind of guy who was willing to go to great lengths to win and perform and to have fun. Anytime I come to Philadelphia, it's cool for me.

I used to go to Flyers games and I would think, "This is a big-ass building." I would sit in the stands and imagine what it would be like to wrestle there, and to actually do it is pretty cool.

If I am going to win the Royal Rumble I wouldn't want it to be anywhere else.

Q Any particularly fond memories?

I was living in Philadelphia when I got signed by WWE. I was sitting there one afternoon, I just woke with a headache or something. I got a call from WWE that I thought was a prank, so I blew it off.

Later in the day, I got more phone calls and I realized they were trying to hire me. It was completely out of the blue. I had figured if it was my career destiny to be an indie cult hero, then so be it.

Q How did working the indie circuit in Philly inform the wrestler you are today?

I was working at CZW, and they were infamous for death matches - violent matches that pushed the boundaries for what is safe or smart or in good taste or whether this is good entertainment - and they just took it as far as possible. It was the perfect place I needed at the perfect time.

I was really starting to understand myself as a personality, characterwise, and learning how to be myself. I was really creatively clicking.

I got to the WWE because my reputation for being the craziest son of a bitch walking the planet.

Q Do you have any strategy for the Royal Rumble?

My plan is to wrap myself in barbed wire, like a mummy, because then no one will want to grab me because they'll risk a serious laceration. If you're going to engage in any kind of an altercation with me, I might get hurt but you're not going to walk away unscarred. There are 29 other guys that are going to get stung.

It's foolproof, right? Or I'll handcuff myself to the post. I plan on being there for a long time.

Q How do you train for a Royal Rumble match? They tend to last a long time. You have to have stamina.

I'll take long, long runs and long bike rides. I'm always training for stamina, anyway, because I'm never going to be the biggest guy or the strongest guy.

I train for endurance and agility. I'm not going to throw 27 people over the rope at one time, but I am prepared to be pounded on for 60 minutes or so.

Q Every time I watch you wrestle, I can't help but think that wrestling in jeans must be pretty uncomfortable.

I found a pretty good brand of jeans, called Joe's Jeans, that are light and stretchy. I wear to the building the same thing I wrestle in, and then change later into the exact same outfit.

It dawned on me that wrestling trunks are outdated. Like, Pat O'Connor had to the wear them in the '40s, but now we're running around the building, we're going through tables, we're getting hit by tables. Anything can happen in a WWE match today. People are coming in from the back and attacking someone in their underwear.

Imagine you are in a bar and you get into an altercation and you are like, "OK, let's take this outside. Take off your pants. Let's go."

Today's dirtsheets presented by Mr. "Never Was Eliminated" Curtis Axel demanding the right to point at the Mania sign

Regarding Daniel Bryan possibly being put into a three-way at WrestleMania 31 due to the heat from fans over his Royal Rumble elimination last night, F4WOnline reports that word from backstage at the Rumble is that will not be happening.

Word coming out of the Rumble is that Vince feels putting Bryan into another three-way would be a repeat and that they would be "going to the well" too many times.

WWE officials expected the backlash over Bryan's elimination but were surprised at the level of it. Due to the atmosphere in the building before the Rumble match even began, officials panicked early in the show and moved some things around.

We received a fan report from reader Barjinder Parhar that said a group of fans blocked the back parking lot at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia after last night's pay-per-view and wouldn't let some of the wrestlers exit. It was noted that fans were upset over Roman Reigns winning and Reigns was spotted leaving around 12:15am EST. Fans were described as "livid" outside of the arena. Barjinder noted that The Usos were very angry and one of them got out of their car and "went off" on a group of fans. The same group chanted "When ya'll say MOVE we say NO."

While Bubba Ray Dudley made his return to WWE in last night's 30-man Royal Rumble main event, his partner Devon was not backstage.

Bubba's return last night was said to be a one-shot deal but WWE officials are open to bringing him back and it was noted that his status could change. Mysteriously many tables were left broken in the backstage area.

As noted, Randy Orton was in the Northeast last night but did not make his return, despite being advertised, at the WWE Royal Rumble pay-per-view. Orton was actually backstage, oiled up and dressed to wrestle and ready to go but his return being delayed again was said to be a storyline decision.

Former NWA Champion Adam Pearce revealed on Twitter that he has been hired by WWE. Pearce has worked as an agent and trainer several times for NXT in the past year. He tweeted:

Adam Pearce @ScrapDaddyAP
Dreams become reality through hard work. Hard work don't do itself. #halflife3please

As noted last night, the WWE Network cancellation page crashed last night after the Royal Rumble. The phrase "#CancelWWENetwork" was also the number one trend on Twitter at one point last night, and it is still trending. Time.com has an article here about the "Cancel WWE Network" movement.

Even with the #CancelWWENetwork campaign, Vince McMahon is “dead set” on sticking to Roman Reigns vs Brock Lesnar.

While the #CancelWWENetwork hashtag was trending last night and most of today, WWE sources indicate that while there were some customers who canceled their subscriptions due to the Royal Rumble, it wasn't such a large amount that WWE considers it a significant number internally.

There's a feeling within WWE that much of the buzz is just fans voicing their anger over how the Rumble pay-per-view played out, specifically Daniel Bryan's elimination and the 30-man main event.

Sources also indicated that while there were some issues with buffering during the WWE Network stream of the Rumble, there was no outage on WWE's side and the issues were not widespread. There may have been a more localized problem causing issues that had nothing to do with WWE's end.
In terms of stock backlash, WWE's stock only dropped by around 4 cents at today's closure. Started off around 20-30 cents higher than Friday's end but lost all of that plus the extra 4 cents.

Also, loved all of his work with Tyson Kidd over the years.

Also, loved him when he first debuted as part of The Nexus... remember thinking he looked very "sinister" when he would perch on the top rope and look around "menacingly" for 30 seconds before actually hitting the 450 splash.

http://www.pwinsider.com/article/91160/original-ecw-booker-twa-star-larry-winters-passes-away.html?p=1

http://www.onlineworldofwrestling.com/pictures/l/larrywinters/01.jpg

Larry Winters, a Philadelphia-area independent wrestling standout for Joel Goodhart's Tri-State Wrestling Alliance and Tod Gordon's ECW passed away earlier today. We don't have full details but the word that has made the rounds is that he suffered a heart attack.

Winters was best known in the Philadelphia area as a regular for the TWA, but prior to that, did wrestle in enhancement roles on TV for Verne Gagne's AWA, Puerto Rico's WWC and Jim Crockett Promotions. In the late 1980s into the 1990s, however, the rise of what would eventually become the independent scene truly began. With WWF going national and the territories dying out one by one, that opened up a vacuum for promoters to start running smaller towns and even smaller venues in larger areas.

In the Northeast, one of the primary promotions of that era was the National Wrestling Federation, which featured Winters feuding with D.C. Drake over the NWF championship as one of the cornerstones of the promotion. While the WWF began focusing on caricature characters and appealing to families, the NWF pushed violence with all sorts of brawls, dog collar matches and cage matches. The promotion ran on a regular basis in the New Jersey-Pennsylvania area and even had local TV but was pretty much funded by "sold shows" where the venue or organization buys the show outright and then makes money on how much they get at the door. Over time, those backers and opportunities began to dry up and with that came the end of the NWF.

It was not, however, the end of Winters vs. Drake.

By 1990, Joel Goodhart formed and ran the Tri-State Wrestling Alliance, which ran the Philly market regularly based off the power of Goodhart's radio show and became one of the first promotions trying specifically to market to the hardcore, die-hard, insider wrestling fans, that gave Winters his first real "home" promotion.

Winters vs. Drake migrated to TWA with all sorts of stipulation bouts including stretcher matches and dog collar matches. TWA was built around having four quarterly super-shows at the PA Convention Center with all sorts of names, from Abdullah the Butcher to Owen Hart to Steve Williams and so forth, that would appeal to hardcore, blue-collar wrestling fans on top in dream matches and regular storylines using the locals underneath, often mixed in with more nationally known names to give them a bit of a rub.

At the same time, Winters was also the trainer at Goodhart's wrestling school, training the likes of future ECW icon The Sandman and perennial ECW lower card favorite Don E. Allen.

Winters and Johnny Hotbody would go on to win the TWA Tag Team championships but by end of 1991, the TWA would announce that it was closing with promoter Goodhart disappearing into the night and fans left waiting out in the cold for a show scheduled to be headlined by Buddy Rogers vs. Buddy Landell. It would have been Rogers' final bout, but never came to be. The TWA was gone.

In it's place came the original ECW in it's earliest permutation, Eastern Championship Wrestling. Founder Tod Gordon, who had been a backer at times for Goodhart and a long-time wrestling fan, decided following a meeting with Winters and future ECW ring announcer Bob Artese that they would launch a new company out of the ashes of Tri-State, even using the same championship belts (now repainted).

Winters was tapped as the first booker of the company, but wouldn't last long in the role. At the time, ECW was a little gritter then your average indy promotion but still only ran on a semi-regular basis, bringing in names like Davey Boy Smith, Ivan Koloff, Jimmy Snuka and even Terry Taylor to provide some name value and substance to the average fan while the remnants of the TWA roster provided the glue and the majority of the action.

While Winters was the first booker, he wouldn't last long in the role. Gordon, upset with angle booked by Winters that led to JT Smith being painted white by Winters and Johnny Hotbody, removed Winters from the position. The approved angle was that Smith's partner D.C. Drake was supposed to be painted black as well. The black paint somehow never came into play and Gordon, with heavy ties to the Philadelphia chapter of the Variety Club charity, was done with Winters as a booker, upset with the obvious racial overtones.

Winters was replaced by Gordon himself before Eddie Gilbert was brought in when the company debuted on Sportschannel Philadelphia. In time, Gilbert too, was replaced by Paul Heyman.

Winters remained with the company as a wrestler and appeared on many ECW cards in the early 1990s, often teaming with Hotbody, including a run with the ECW Tag Team championships. Hotbody evenutally turned on Winters and the two faced off at the first major ECW supercard in the ECW Arena, the Super Summer Sizzler Spectacular. His influence and placement on the cards, however, slowly slide downward.

Over time, however, as Paul Heyman began bringing in his own crew of fresher, younger talents and found the right mix and vibe for what would eventually become Extreme Championship Wrestling, the old TWA guard were gone, one by one. Winters, like Tony Stetson, Johnny Hotbody and others, were replaced by Taz, Sabu, Tommy Dreamer and others. In the end, only JT Smith and The Sandman remained before Sandman was last man standing. The Goodhart era had laid the foundation and now the Heyman era was building the house. Nothing lasts forever, especially in pro wrestling.

Winters quietly faded away, although in the early 2000s, began making some appearances on the Philadelphia indy scene again for groups like the now-defunct Pro Wrestling Unplugged, billed as "The Living Legend", in part to play off of matches with Larry Zbsyzko in the AWA and Zbyszko using the same nickname, but also as a show of respect for Winters' part in the earliest era of independent Philly wrestling.

When several TWA reunion shows were booked in New Jersey, Winters was among the roster that returned, defeating former TWA regular Jimmy Jannetty. Johnny Hotbody was in his corner. The TWA shows eventually ran their course and once again, Winters quietly disappeared from the business.

In some ways, Winters' legacy will have been training The Sandman, who went on to become the most famous TWA roster member of all time, evolving into a legitimate draw and star in ECW as well as having runs in WCW and WWE. But, there was a time where fans in the Northeast knew that brawls and blood meant D.C. Drake vs. Larry Winters was on the card, and those matches weren't going to let them down - and that too, should be the legacy Winters is remembered for in the business.

From the Observer about some possible changes and plans for Mania:

Lesnar vs. Reigns and HHH vs. Sting are the only locked in stone matches for Mania, but Cena vs. Rusev was planned, and the heavy Wyatt protection leads one to believe Undertaker is coming back. Also planned was Orton vs. Rollins, so Bryan was not even figured into the top five matches on the show. We were flat out told there was no chance of Bryan being added and making it a three-way, because Vince McMahon felt that already was done last year. Bryan and Ziggler set up a match on Twitter, and that wasn’t fooling around, but the actual plan, so that’s the top six right there. That lets them be happy because they’ll have a shot at having the best match on the show if they don’t have their time sliced. Throw in the Battle Royal, a Divas match and you may get a tag title or something else but that’s pretty much the top of the card.

Observer also had a report on how the WWE is still stubbornly refusing to see Bryan's status as anything huge or mega-star worthy. Also the recent 1 million sub numbers for the Network includes those who cancelled and February being a free month is to inflate the numbers for the official report in early February.

Exclusive: Another Legend To Join The 2015 WWE Hall Of Fame

Former AWA star Ray Stevens, the long-time tag team partner of Pat Patterson, is scheduled to be inducted into the 2015 WWE Hall of Fame.

He will be inducted by Patterson, who for years has lobbied for Stevens inclusion in the WWE Hall of Fame. The timing and location seemed ideal this year given Stevens' long-time connection to the greater San Francisco area. For several years Stevens was a major star for Roy Shire as well as the AWA. WWE is expected to make the official announcement in February.

Gonna throw some armchair booking here:

- HHH's announcement is that the WWE title will be defended twice at Mania, with the guaranteed match of Lesnar vs. Reigns. The other match will be the winner of Reigns/Lesnar vs the winner of Fast Lane's Elimination Chamber (Ambrose/Bryan/Kane/Show/Ziggler/Wyatt).

-Bryan and Ziggler finish up the chamber with Bryan getting the win.

-At Mania, Lesnar vs Reigns opens the show, and Lesnar rips through Reigns, almost an exact replica of Cena/Lesnar from Summerslam.

-Heyman builds up that Brock barely broke a sweat and he'll have no problem steam rolling Bryan in the main event.

-Bryan vs the Authority's newest muscle Sheamus was booked by HHH as a "tune-up" match for Bryan to soften him up.

-Bryan upsets Lesnar to win the Championship.

-Next night on RAW, Reigns comes out and admits he was "in over his head" and wasn't ready to be "the man", as he even needed help from The Rock to win the Rumble. He says Mania was a huge wakeup call that he needs to improve, and that one day he will be a champion the fans can be proud of.

-This builds huge sympathy for Reigns and makes his "rise to the top" angle very intriguing because it's very reality-based. Whatta story it would be if Reigns did indeed win over the audience from improving and won the big one at WM32 after getting embarrassed at WM31

I think Lesnar's "broken rib" is definitely going to be an important factor when it comes to the storytelling of the match, especially since the spear targets the rib. His broken rib will be his Achilles heel.

Dirtsheets:

Negotiations between Rey Mysterio and WWE are said to be almost done and Rey could have his official release from the company soon. We should be hearing about Rey's post-WWE plans in the next few months. Apparently Rey has been working on putting together signing appearances as a number of promoters are reportedly waiting to make announcements. It's also expected that Rey will wrestle for Lucha Underground.

There's a lot of speculation that Bray Wyatt was talking about The Undertaker during his promo on last night's WWE SmackDown, seen above. Wyatt mentioned that he fears nothing, living or dead. He also said after what he does next, it will be hard for the WWE Universe to ever smile again. At last word, WWE officials were still not sure on The Undertaker's status for WrestleMania 31 but with the Royal Rumble over, they likely got an answer and it appears they are moving forward with the feud.

It was said this week by a WWE source that no matter how hard the fans rally for Daniel Bryan and no matter how much he gets over, top WWE officials are not going to see him as a top guy that can be the face of the company. Before the news came out this week that WWE was planning on doing Bryan vs. Dolph Ziggler at WrestleMania 31, there was a feeling among many that officials would not give in like they did last year and Bryan wouldn't be getting pushed to the WrestleMania main event again.

The Bunny may be gone from WWE as there were plans at one point for a Bunny vs. Adam Rose exchange at the Rumble but that never happened.

The 2015 WWE Royal Rumble pay-per-view drew an advanced sellout with just under 14,000 fans in attendance. As noted, WWE announced on TV that 17,164 fans were in attendance

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Professional wrestling star Mick Foley was ejected from the Wing Bowl eating contest Friday after stuffing uneaten chicken wings into a fanny pack.

People following the event on social media dubbed Foley's attempt at boosting his wing total "inflate gate," a play on the Super Bowl-bound New England Patriots' deflated football controversy.

Chicago's Patrick Bertoletti won with a Wing Bowl record 444 wings in 26 minutes. He edged out 2014 champion Molly Schuyler, of Bellevue, Nebraska, who eclipsed her record 363-wing mark with 440 wings.

The fan-favorite Foley, who's known in the ring as Mankind, said after his ouster that he didn't want to overstuff himself and get sick, like other competitors.

"I didn't want that to be my legacy," said Foley. "So I stretched the rules. I thought people would appreciate that, right here in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania!"

Wing Bowl started in 1993 as a way for Philadelphia's long-suffering sports fans to blow off steam before the Super Bowl.

About 20,000 people gathered at the Wells Fargo Arena — home of the Philadelphia 76ers and Philadelphia Flyers — to drink beer and watch scantily clad women serve competitors wings.
Been a running gag for Foley's stand up comedy gig since he's been busted at least 1-2 times before at other competitions.

If Daniel Bryan faces Dolph Ziggler at Wrestlemania, they could potentially have match of the night. Problem is, I can't see WWE giving them a chance to upstage Triple H and Sting, Undertaker and Bray Wyatt, Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar, and whatever match John Cena is in. So they'll likely only get five minutes, or even stupid Wrestlemania squash match, which seems to be a tradition these days.

My guess is we will get this match at fastlane with Sheamus costing Bryan the match giving us Sheamus/Bryan at WM and Ziggler gets a rematch with Barrett because "Fuck you all" that's why...

Emperor Smeat

Either that or maybe another merging of the titles (US & IC).

When Cena won the Big Gold belt, the original plan was for him to boost that title's status and Smackdown itself. Whole plan lasted 2-3 weeks before the WWE stopped caring and instead moved towards a merging feud.

I kind of feel like it is about time for Cody Rhodes to break out. I've enjoyed his work for a long time, and was never as down on him as some were during his "CAWdy" years, but I think his "Undashing" character was when he proved he could be something more. He became a great Intercontinental Champion and then became a more conventional heel, before having an awesome face run which turned into an awesome stint with Goldust as a tag team, before they randomly lost the Tag Titles to the New Age Outlaws (presumably to make room for The Usos), got a bit lost in the shuffle, Cody got his make-over, and now they are heels.

When the split happens, or Goldust decides to retire or what have you, I think Cody might finally get the "shot" people have spoken about over the years. The timing has always felt off, but I think 2015 could be a great year for him.

Man, a feud between Cody and Bray Wyatt could lead to some very interesting promo work.

I just caught WWE:24. Granted, it didn't pull back the curtains as much as i would have wanted it to, but it did have it's moments. One in particular stood out for me. Warrior said something to the point of, "WWE is different from other places of work. It has heart."

I know the montages, and dare say, the entire series was produced to make me feel nostalgic, for me to relive moments i've invested in. But i truly think that WWE, as a company, does have heart. It's given me something to care about. Moments to cherish. Things to talk about. To bond over. To help friendships blossom, to help break the ice. I guess that's why i'll always be a fan.

Thanks, WWE.

I really hope Cody gets a good main event run some day. He's had such a history in the WWE and has really developed so much, so naturally.

One of the great things about Cody's history is how each change came about so fluidly and was so well written that it was just completely natural. He's managed to pull each persona off, and has been able to connect with the audience. He has a great look, is great in the ring and great on the mic. I really see no reason why he can't some day shed the Stardust persona and move on to better things:

According to the Observer, the possible reason why Byran vs Ziggler might happen at Mania is because Bryan pushed for that match.

Vince supposedly wanted Sheamus-Bryan instead since it didn't happen last year and likely to fix the "18 seconds" fiasco that was meant to benefit Sheamus a lot more.

Lock Jaw
02-01-2015, 07:39 PM
So are one of them turning heel, or will they fight "just because"?

Daniel Bryan vs heel Sheamus would be the better "story", and the two always have good matches.

Don't want to see Ziggler turn heel.

Been speculation for a while about Sheamus turning heel and what Big Show did at Survivor Series and joining the Authority was meant for Sheamus before he got hurt.

Similar to Reigns, Sheamus could have used those months he's been out for developing a good Mania feud. Now he's more likely to just be another name for the Mania battle royale.

Ziggler is likely just going to be a face for his match against Bryan unless the WWE are really that dumb and try to turn Bryan heel. At least that's the way Ziggler has been teasing the possible matchup on Twitter.

I've given TNA varying amounts of attention over the years. They've never managed to keep me hooked however. I generally follow, but there was a period last year where I wouldn't have been able to tell you Lashley had won the World Title, or that Bobby Roode had won it off him.

Really don't like the idea of Joe being aligned with anyone. He should really just be an ass kicking machine. Low Ki is a guy that I think works better as a plucky babyface too. I'd be fine with MVP and Kenny King as heels aligned together -- MVP can go after the World Title and King over the X-Division Title.

Article on a Roman Reigns interview. (http://www.sportsworldnews.com/articles/28976/20150202/roman-reigns-booed-royal-rumble-winner-discusses-getting-a-ton-of-criticism-and-dealing-with-it-video.htm) Classic lines in bold.

30-man Rumble Match winner Roman Reigns was booed heavily at the Royal Rumble as he went on to win from the 19th draw, but just getting a reaction from the crowd is fine with him.

Reigns spoke with Sam Roberts on his podcast and talked about getting a lot of love and hate from different people and being okay with it.

"I see all my criticism. I'm in a position now where I get a ton of love, which is great, and a ton of criticism, which is great," Reigns told Roberts. "As long as people are talking about me, that's all that matters to me. The people who are critiquing and bashing me, they're making me more relevant. I would think if you didn't want me around, just don't talk about me. But, they make it even more overwhelming. Noise is noise. That's the thing."
He continued: "I'm all about being opinionated and speaking up for what you like, which is what we have now with social media. I don't believe in like CM Punk 'I'm the voice of the voiceless.' That's crap. People are talking and being heard all over the world. You put something on the Internet and people will read it - whether you're a famous celebrity or Joe Schmo. I read all these stuff, but people have to consider that I'm not writing or don't go out there and create the whole show. I'm a performer. I go out there and perform to the best of my abilities."

Despite the WWE Universe being behind stars such as Daniel Bryan, Dean Ambrose and Dolph Ziggler, the WWE is pushing Reigns into the main event of WrestleMania 31 against Brock Lesnar.

Reigns discussed the WWE being behind him as he prepares to wrestle for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship on March 29 at Levi's Stadium in California.

"It's one of those situations where obviously the company does what the company does and the fans do what they do," he said. "And that's what's so great. So, the fans have to realize as opinionated as you want it, the company is the same way. The company is going to do what they want to do, fans are going to do what they want to do, and hopefully at the end of the day I'm just the guy getting rich."

Lastly, Reigns discussed his critics and the legacy he wants to leave behind in his career.

"The majority of critics are people who have no clue what they're talking about, been in a wrestling ring, been a public speaker, and wouldn't even lock up with me. They would have no clue what to do. So, for them to critique or ever say anything about any performer is asinine and just blows my mind."

He added: "My goal is hopefully make everyone happy and be satisfied with the product that I've created. People don't realize is I created a product - a Superman punch - and taken a spear and made it my own. There's a lot of things that I've done that I've created, so there's a lot of opinions that I have that I'm not going to budge on."
