Another pro wrestler is trying their hand at mixed martial arts.

While appearing on the MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani this afternoon, Jack Swagger (real name Jake Hager) announced that he's signed with Bellator MMA and will be debuting as a heavyweight in 2018. Swagger said he's wanted to do MMA for a long time and had been negotiating with Bellator since the summer, finalizing terms with them over the weekend.

When asked how the news would affect his pro wrestling schedule, Swagger said he wants to continue wrestling in addition to his new career in MMA. Swagger has been working on the independent scene since departing WWE earlier this year.

Swagger noted on an episode of Chael Sonnen's Beyond the Fight podcast in March that he had requested his release from WWE due to a lack of opportunities and being far apart in contract negotiations. He told Sonnen that it would be difficult to decline a good offer to try out MMA if he got one.

Before starting with WWE in 2006, Swagger was a standout amateur wrestler at the University of Oklahoma.

Swagger strikes me as a tough guy. I liked him far more in wrestling than he was objectively good. In retrospect, it kind of seems like he had to hold himself back so he wouldn't accidentally crush anyone, haha. I don't necessarily think he'll be a raging success in MMA, but I do think that Bellator is the place that will set him up for the most success possible.

Looking at the card now, I'm not really "feeling it" for Survivor Series.

The only matches I'm really interested in are Lesnar/Styles and the Tag Team Match.

I can see Raw winning the night 5-2 or 4-3.

WWE Network’s “Bring it to the Table,” which featured moments like JBL shit talking Mauro Ranallo and JBL shit talking Enzo Amore, is apparently “done,” PWInsider is reporting.

The actual set was put into storage and there are no plans for future episodes (currently).

It's weird, because I had thought for sure that Brock had the match with Balor scrapped in July because it's just not believable for Brock to sell to a guy of Balor's size with his style of offense. Then it seemed like it was back on, but now it seems to be off again. Heyman always seems to hype it up, so you wouldn't think it would be Brock. Very confusing.

Don't think over is the problem with Balor, to be honest. I know that's the Meltz report, but I think AJ got big match with Brock and now they want to save the next one for Mania. I think the Rumble will be a Brock Smash event. Balor doesn't fit that.

At TLC Balor beat Styles, the next night he got his shit pushed in by Kane, and lost to Joe last night; although I expect he’ll win the programme when it’s said and done. At Survivor Series AJ had a barn-stormer with Brock and was positioned as a threat.

So, theoretically Brock & Balor > AJ, which would stand to reason that Balor would also be a threat to Brock.

Maybe the whole plan was Beast vs. Demon and they realised they’d need an “out” for the match as they want to keep the belt on Brock but not have “The Demon” lose.

I honestly think they are pretty interesting rosters. Even if you didn't overtly state that there were weight restrictions on the guys, they seem fairly balanced. Even Raw, with its larger guys, still has guys who can really go -- Cesaro, Samoa Joe, Luke Harper, Kevin Owens, Apollo Crews, John Cena, Randy Orton, Roman Reigns, etc. SmackDown is lighter on the star side, but it does have AJ Styles, Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins, Kurt Angle, Jeff Hardy, Chris Jericho (when he's there), The Miz, two of the New Day guys and, I suppose, Dolph Ziggler.

If you wanted, instead of splitting teams like Gallows & Anderson, The Usos and The Hardys, you can send the partners over to the other brand. You could call up Drew McIntyre for Raw, Lars Sullivan to begin squashing people, The Undisputed Era might actually be taken as something resembling a threat on SmackDown, etc.

Eh, it's just a thought.

I never bought into it as much as everybody else. I've never felt Ziggler since he lost the World Heavyweight Title. Even the SS win just felt like it was another guy just being jammed into that picture. They were going to push Roman Reigns and Daniel Bryan was coming back.

Besides, those guys were all buried when The Authority fired them like they didn't matter.

According to the Observer, small possibility Lesnar won't defend the Universal title at next year's Royal Rumble due to lack of credible challengers. At the moment, WWE is against the idea of Strowman-Lesnar II although Meltzer speculated they could lean towards the idea of Joe-Lesnar II as a potential match.

Vince McMahon is reportedly against the idea of having Braun Strowman face Brock Lesnar again at the Royal Rumble in January. For one, the match has already happened and Lesnar won clean. Second, Strowman is being readied for a match against Triple H and isn't going to be losing while Lesnar isn't going to have anyone kick out of his F5 until Roman Reigns does it at WrestleMania.

No matter what is booked, Brock Lesnar is scheduled to be appearing at the Royal Rumble in some capacity but it's possible he may not be defending his title. With Finn Balor seemingly out and Braun Strowman not a realistic possibility, the only wrestlers left are guys like Bray Wyatt, Elias, Jason Jordan - who are actually in worse position than Balor.

Samoa Joe is a possibility and would likely be the best alternative as it could be a singles match for the title.

I do think WWE are aware Roman's heat can be used in certain situations. I'm hoping they'll be smart enough to not have him win the Rumble in Philly, who booed the fuck out of him last time. The match with Lesnar can be set up by other means.

But when push comes to shove I'm certain they'll try to sell Reigns' inevitable win and being the first man to beat Brock and kick out of the F5 in over a year as being this grand conquering hero moment no matter how the crowd reacts.

Yeah, this is always bothers me. Like when someone tries to make the case that Austin was actually a heel because he was an asshole. Um, no, have you heard his pops? He's the biggest babyface of all-time.

I'm not a big WWE apologist, but they know Roman gets booed and they play into it a lot. They know he's a heel. People are coming along to the shows to boo him with hopes that he'll fail. That's exactly what a heel is. Don't let him kissing babies and being positioned against guys that are snarling all the time fool you -- anyone who goes against Roman is a babyface.

Where it gets confusing for people is that they book Roman as the protagonist, and people confuse babyface with protagonist. That being said, Roman is still miscast at this type of heel. He'd be better as a babyface that takes no nonsense, and to do that you'd have to "turn him heel" (to the people who still think he's a face).

The WWE just sucks at telling stories.

People are going to boo that too, because it's still the automatic response. Unless you're going with someone not Cena as the AJ Styles opponent, in which case them eliminating Reigns at the end is going to get such a big pop.

Right now though, I'm kind of hoping that they go with Reigns winning, doing the whole "destiny being fulfilled thing" and then they have Brock beat the piss out of him at Mania. Play with the "chosen one" expectations. Everybody and their dog will think they know the coronation is coming at Mania, so if Brock wins then people are going to lose their shit. Give Reigns a period between WrestleMania and maybe SummerSlam where he has a "bad year" to subvert these expectations people have that "lol Roman wins."

The experiment has not worked the way they'd like. They know this. They can jam it down people's throats and just present that reality, or they can shift everything slightly and give people a story that they're going to be completely lost in.

For some weird reason, I imagined Cena beating Styles at the Rumble for a second year in a row, breaking Flair's record in the process. Batista was in right place at right time and went much further than someone of his skill level should have made it. Batista isn't a terrible wrestler but he is in my view a midcarder who was lucky to get into the business at a time when talent was lacking.
