I've never listened to the podcast but I follow the guy who hosts it on Twitter and he always seems to have great info/insight like this. If Mixed Match Challenge is a hit it could increase Facebook potentially offering the E a deal for RAW/SD rights as well.
It's cool to hear you follow him. I got through the whole thing, and I really enjoyed it. For people who like to think about the health of the wrestling business, it was good for stimulating the brain a bit.
Basically, digital media is such a slow increase (something like 3%) that they were speculating that it's not even worth catering to on that front, and that they're kind of getting lost in their own buzz. Analysts of the stock and all that basically say that TV is the crunch point. So the Fox news is the biggest thing for them right now, because they'll get to play Fox and USA off each other. Facebook and Amazon are kind of non-entities like that. The WWE have tried to make it sound like Amazon wanted to cover them in India, because they're the #2 sport, but they didn't mention just how big cricket is compared to WWE, haha.

How certain are we about Ronda Rousey wrestling a match at WrestleMania? I had it figured for a lock, but if the two parties haven't come together on money, or they feel like she's not really where they want her to be in order to milk it for what they want, then Ronda being the "Tyson" in a feud between Charlotte and Becky on SmackDown actually makes a lot of sense. I'm still predicting Rousey, but Becky has got to have the third best chance, when you really look at things.

The Sheamus prediction is random as hell.
As for Ronda, I have a feeling she'll be in a match of some sort. But I don't think they'll come to an agreement fast enough for her to be in the Rumble and, frankly, they shouldn't have her in the Rumble. She can appear in the crowd or something but that's it.
The draw should be for her to have her first WWE match at WrestleMania.

I just don't see Bateman in the Royal Rumble. He might be backstage visiting friends or something, but I can't see them whipping up music, giving him a presentation and prepping the announcers just to have Derrick Bateman return for a 15 minute mid-card spot in the Rumble. I could be wrong, but a surprise Rumble entrant should come packed with something. AJ Styles was surreal; Sami Zayn had NXT history with Owens; Bubba Ray Dudley was returning in Philly. What does "Derrick Bateman?! Derrick Bateman is back in the WWE! "The American Classic" Derrick Bateman, Saxton! He's been tearing it up on the independents!" really add to the Rumble?
I remember a time when I was as invested in New Legacy as Hasney. "Sheamoose" was the best thing they ever did for me.

Fair point. I've come back back around to Nakamura winning. I couldn't see it for the longest time, but now I'm just like "fuck it." But argh! I just can't commit to it. 01-17-2018, 05:43 PM
Surely they are not going to go with more of a Roode vs. Ziggler feud? That stunk up the joint. And how does it make sense for Ziggler to come back and try to win the belt he already had but decided he was better than? Like, what did he think was going to happen in the tournament? But why did they put the US Title on Roode in a tournament instead of just having him beat Corbin one-on-one at Clash of Champions? This is some really dodgy storytelling, and you're going to go nuts if you try to analyze it.

With Bobby Roode in the WWE, does James Storm appearing there inherently become more attractive. Or is it "too TNA?" I was just wondering on what Roode could possibly do with the US Title, and a feud with James Storm, my unrealistic faction suggestion aside, is probably the most intriguing thing for me. But would the WWE do it?

Coming up with a "realistic" WM card is really not a fun exercise since I have no doubt Triple H and Shane McMahon will once again have matches.
Triple H vs. Kurt Angle
Shane McMahon vs. Daniel Bryan
Complete waste of Angle's last WM match (though to be fair he can't work anymore), complete waste of Bryan's return to the ring. And two matches that they could easily merge and turn into a tag match but they'll suck up two Mania spots with it instead.

HHH was rather adamant at the last quarterly conference call DBry wouldn't wrestle again in the WWE and implied it would undercut all the work put into the concussion program, which he said is among the best you will find for any athlete in the world.
I kind of want Braun to win the Rumble (as a surprise entrant) and decide to take on AJ or KO/Sami if they win.
Or I want Braun vs. HHH w/ Braun doing the burying this time. I have no interest, at this time, in HHH vs Angle b/c I don't think Angle can 'go' that well. Same concern I have about Taker possibly wrestling again this year (though we'll have a better idea of what shape Taker is in this Monday at RAW 25).

Watching Raw from the beginning on WWE network. Took them 5 episodes to finally realize this Rob Bartlett project was not working and they seemed to started turned the announcing all gimmicky. First they did this weird thing where Savage's mic wasn't working so he stole Bartlett's for the rest of the show. The next week Bartlett dressed as Elvis and did an Elvis impression all night during commentary.
I honestly forgot he even lasted this long.

Cappotelli was great too, but got injured straight after his first main roster call up, then was the only wrestler I know of to benefit from a concussion as they found that brain tumor he had due to a routine scan after a concussion.

I remember they randomly brought Johnny Jeter back for some huge 30-man battle royal they had on Raw in late 2006. He had been off-screen since the Spirit Squad ended and I figured they'd brought him back to do something with Kenny Dykstra, the only Squad member to stay on the main roster.
Instead he was never seen on the main roster again. Puzzling considering how good he was.

Hmm, I think MNM was better, just because Nitro & Cappotelli would have reeked of "Tough Enough." And Mercury put together a lot of the MNM stuff and kind of led Nitro in the early days. He was a big part of putting the package together. Nitro and Cappotelli would have been two great raw talents without any polish.

He worked as Jayden Jeter at house shows. Cornette has spoken about him before, and has alluded to Jeter's passion for the business being stamped out by WWE. I'm not sure how personalized that information is (Cornette is honest and on the money usually, but when he likes guys, he often places the blame on the company first -- like with the Eugene gimmick), but he seems to have had a good relationship with Jeter. I didn't realize this, but Jeter actually won the OVW Heavyweight Title way back in 2003.

Unfortunately, that has been a recurring trend in recent years with a bunch of people that got cut by the WWE.
Wade Barrett does a bit of wrestling related stuff on the side but he's pretty much done as an active wrestler and several former women wrestlers admitted their time in the WWE killed their desire to continue in the industry. Then you have others like Swagger who still wrestles but also admitted about how much passion he lost because of the WWE.

Oh, there's an entire lost generation of wrestlers who were stamped out by the WWE and shitty gimmicks in the 21st century. I get mocked for liking a lot of the first wave OVW wrestlers, but they should have been more than gimps, the mentally challenged, French sympathizers (what the fuck does that even mean?), male strippers, stutterers, stylists and cheerleaders.

To be fair, Rico as a stylist was great and given that he was 40 when he was called up his ceiling was never going to be particularly high. As it is he got a decent amount of screen time in his two and a half years on the roster and totally killed it in the role he was given.
Emperor Smeat
01-20-2018, 08:40 PM
Even though their gimmicks were doomed to fail almost from the start, Eugene and Scotty Goldman (Colt Cabana) probably would have been a lot more successful if they arrived in the WWE a few years later.
Cabana's style of comedy as a wrestler would have fit a lot better in the PG era while Eugene could have been molded into a potential huge star and hero for disabled children.

It was entertaining, and so were moments of The Spirit Squad. And Nick Dinsmore was never going to be pushed as a wrestler, so adjusting and playing the mentally challenged boy prolonged his main roster tenure too. It's just a shame that it was like that. Why not use Rico as a serious babyface and try to do something like WCW did with DDP or WWE is currently doing with AJ Styles? Not to say that it would have worked on either of those levels, but I doubt you would assert that he had to be a silly act while he was there either. Daniel Bryan could have been great as "Bryan the IT Guy" too. It's just fortunate we didn't get that.

Eugene wouldn't work today. It would be seen as insensitive and tasteless (rightfully so). It was, ugh, a "necessary evil" (what does that say about the WWE?) in 2004 or whenever he came up, because a real rassler gimmick wouldn't have worked. It's a shame they didn't turn him on the ECW show in 2006 and have him "shoot" on how WWE made him play a "retard," when he's really one of the best technical wrestlers in the world today. Could have been a fun act on that rebooted show (had they insisted on doing it).
Dinsmore, coming along today, probably would have been tearing it up in the indies as a "wrestling genius," had some good stuff going for him in ROH, EVOLVE and New Japan -- stretching out guys like Zack Sabre, Jr. Then NXT would have signed him to be a player/coach for a while and see if the smarks ate him up. Then he'd either get a push towards the NXT Title or moved to the main roster and then either forgotten about on SmackDown or slum it on Raw like any of the indy guys are currently doing.

While not completely wrestling related, find it really interesting and puzzled how Rock's recent film (Jumaji) not only crushed Cena's recent film (Ferdinand) but also made almost $1 billion in theaters.
Need to check the math but believe Jumaji also out-earned all of Cena's films combined as well.

No way does Jumanji look better than Ferdinand. One looks like a harmless kids film and the other looks like a big, sloppy pile of remake. But you're right about The Rock being bigger in Hollywood. I wouldn't look too much into this like it's wrestlers drawing houses though. People are dumb enough to go and see Jumanji when it's released around nothing else.

I was thinking of matches they could do for Triple H that would genuinely get me interested in him being at WrestleMania. About the only thing I can think of is Luke Harper randomly attacking Triple H and making him bleed. The angle is, I guess, that Harper is a loose madman and Triple H, horrible babyface though he is, hobbles through life with random Harper attacks.

So this has probably been talked about before but surprisingly CM Punks 'pipe bomb' speech is number 2 on the Raw 100 top moments.
At the end of this speech he says he has a personal story about Vince, now I've read online that this was just a cue for backstage to know he had finished but this has been disputed.

Washing away the day of bad wrestling with some classic stuff. This time I've gone a bit more modern: Steve Austin vs. Kurt Angle from SummerSlam 2001. I was a new wrestling fan when I first saw it, and I didn't appreciate the ring work perhaps as much as I should. I've always liked Angle, but the face/heel dynamics of this felt weird and like it played with credibility dynamics, and the Invasion angle, even to fresh eyes, was clearly a mess.
That being said, I've heard such good things about this match. I figured I should really revisit it, and I thought I must have sometime over my younger years. I think the one I've seen more of is Unforgiven, where Angle wins the belt, because I don't remember Angle's gear. This should be good.

Austin's so good on the mic as a heel, but there is this undercurrent underneath everything that is just goofy. Austin feeling like Vince wants to replace him with Angle is perfect egocentric star shit. "A hug used to mean something" -- not so much.
The stare-down between Angle and Austin in the aisle to start the match is epic. Austin going into full bad-ass mode is just what this needed to sell Angle as a guy who can fight him. He's worth the skin off the back of the knuckles. JR's commentary is prime too. When Angle takes Austin down and starts pummeling him, JR simply states "Angle is trying to kick Austin's ass." That's some classic Mid-South choosing of terminology to position Angle in the viewers' minds as something to get behind.
Something I've noticed watching Bret Hart recently is how good he is at calling back to action earlier in the match. If the heel pulls him by the hair, he'll get that heel by the hair later in the match. Against Mr. Perfect at SummerSlam '91 is a great example of that. So is the Cage Match with Owen. I like how Austin chains together three suplexes, but then gets upped by Angle who rolls a billion Germans.
The Stunner out of nowhere is...an interesting touch. Modern eyes make it seem like just another spot where someone hits their finishing move randomly. From memory, the intention here seemed to be to make Angle look like a resilient son of a bitch for kicking out. His shoulder getting up just in time makes for a great near fall.
Austin hitting his second Stunner is bringing back memories, haha. Austin goes for the kill, and I remember as a kid thinking "C'mon, Kurt." Ha at Austin telling Earl Hebner to put Angle back in the ring. Angle's selling off the posting is great.
Oh, shit, that's right -- he goes into the post A LOT. Austin's heat in this match is vicious. Lots of cool spots and counters. Angle dragging Austin back into the ring is a thing of beauty. Austin looks good surviving as he does, and Angle takes so much punishment and keeps on fighting.
Great ending. The referees take better bumps than the guys today.

Roman is easily one of the best wrestlers WWE has had in the main event. His offense is AWESOME and his selling is quality, not that he's HBK or something but for his character he sells very well. It sucks he gets treated the way he does, but it is what it is. He's a great wrestler.
I concur with Fragile X. The Big Dog is a solid worker and worthy of the "locker room leader" moniker. The lad has had some bad luck with respect to his rise to main event status coinciding with the WWE Universe's innate desire to see Daniel Bryan back in the main event picture and possibly with the Heavyweight title around his waist. You can't necessarily blame them since we never got a proper title "reign".

It's weird because this year they've not even announced half the field yet but everyone that's been announced has "declared their entry."

Dave has said that he thinks the Network subscriber numbers are low, because the WWE is offering three months to lapsed subscribers for $1.99. That this is coming around the Royal Rumble and WrestleMania, where interests will naturally be piqued, is what as Meltzer speculating.
Frankly, I'm glad. I canceled by sub last year when Jinder Mahal won the WWE Title. When you tell me that nothing in your history matters like that, I am going to follow suit. I wasn't watching the PPVs anyway, because they couldn't grip me. Easiest decision to cut back on. The WWE wants 8+ hours a week out of me (Raw, SmackDown, NXT, 205 Live and Main Event) on weeks when they don't run PPVs. If you're going to ask for that sort of investment from me, you better be worth the money I could have made working. And to then ask for more money on top of that? Heading into the Royal Rumble, I am not enthused. I'm anticipating a show with a cold Royal Rumble Winner (either Roman Reigns again or Shinsuke Nakamura, who my fandom has been beat out of). I also know I am getting two Royal Rumbles in an era where the Rumble has not been a very good match. I'm seeing a Handicap Match for the WWE Title with two mid-carders challenging, and a Universal Title match with a green lug that looks like someone fused Eugene and Kurrgan and Kane in 2018. Triple H still wrestles and usually wins.
I hope more and more people decide to stop paying $300 to see Billy Gunn beat up fresh talent and pay $9.99 to see more episodic content in a show that they tell you doesn't matter.
